I rather think, that he's working on the anime right now and want to start his new manga asap. No info about spin off so far and Mashima said in the interview, that he already draw everything he planned in the main story, so I'm rather not expecting it.

Well spin offs can be used to to tie up loose ends and Mashima can have someone else do the spin offs. In other words most of the main of the story was planned out like the though not all of the main story was planned out since there was times Mashima made stuff up on the spot.
