Anime Hunter X Hunter Anime- Fall 2011

I been lurking here for quite a while now,and the recent discussion about manga ,1999 series and the 2011 series caught my interest.

Whenever there is any sort of book is adapted to a movie ,the fans who read the book will definitely compared it with the movie.If is doesn't live up to the expectation or too much changes were make by the director,there is going to be a lot of complain about it.One example I can think of is Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland,the movie and the book was totally different and the changes he made weren't exactly good.I find the movie to be boring,the actress herself didn't portray the character well. Likewise,when manga is adapted to an anime,there is definitely going to be comparison with both and changes will usually be make so that the anime won't just become "a moving ,coloured version of the manga". A lot of anime like Ouran High school host club,Alice Academy,Law of Ueki,Black cat and Air Gear were different from the manga.The sequence of event were change at some part and filler were added.But the changes resulted in some of them to be more interesting than the manga itself.So minor changes isn't exactly bad.

I read the manga,watch the whole of 1999 series and started watching the 2011 version recently from episode 15 or 16.(I didn't really like the hunter exam arc a lot,so I only started at the later stage of the exam) The art wise, both of the adaptation had their up and downs.In terms of the colours,the 2011 version is more brighter(I like that aspect a lot),but the character design wasn't exactly good (Gon look like a 6 years old instead of a 12 years old and his hair looks really tall) and the colour choice isn't very fitting at some point.(I didn't like the colour of Illumi clothing)As for the 1999 version,the colour was more dull (wasn't really appealing to some)but it fitted quite well for the yorknew arc.But the choice of lighting was good at some part of the event,particularly the part when Hanzo pointed the knife at Gon and his eye have a glow to it,which I think the 1999 version did better than the 2011 series.The character design were better,Gon look much like his actual age and I like the colour choices used for the characters.Illumi looks better in the 1999 versions.So,IMO,art wise, 1999 version is better compared to the 2011 version. I don't really bother comparing to the manga art.When I bought the manga, I remember thinking how terrible the art was at the beginning.So both anime did a better job than the manga in terms of art.

As for the pace of the story and the sequence of the event, the 2011 version did a better job than the 1999 version.The 1999 version was too draggy,my sister gave up watching it because of that.A lot of people also gave up watching before the hunter exam arc was even over due to the slow moving pace.(I can't blame them either because the first 30 episode wasn't really great). The fillers weren't exactly bad. I quite enjoy it.The 2011 version have a faster pace and I'm liking it a lot better.But it still drag on at some part.As for the sequence of events, some changes were made and added in the 1999 version, they added a lot of stuff that weren't in the manga and it wasn't that bad but the change in Gon's mom to be Mito sister was a really bad move.It didn't make much sense for her not to appear in the flashback when Mito was telling Gon about Ging.The flashback only show Ging and Mito which is odd.And if Togashi decided to mention Gon's mother in the manga, and the 1999 version had continued ,there will be a problem.Also,it was stated that Gon stayed with his mother and Ging never visited until she died.So,how did Ging brought Gon to Greed Island?That is a plothole.As for 2011 version,only notable changes were Kaito not being presence in the first episode but i don't blame them for cutting it out because in the manga,he reappear after like 180+ chapters.Most people would have forgotten him by then.So, I'm okay with it.But i think he has to be mentioned in episode 21 or else it will be hard to explain where Gon got Ging's hunter license from.

As for the heated debate over the censorship,I pretty much forgotten how much was censored in the 1999 version.But when I saw a post in another forum that show the difference with how the censorship was handled in both adaptation, the 2011 version surprisingly didn't censor that much compared to the 1999 version.Except for the Killua ripping out the heart part.Only that part bug me.So, 2011 wins.

Now,to the voice of the characters,both are quite good.But I don't like Illumi's voice in the 2011 version.The 1999 version was better.

As for the opening and closing theme,both are good.But the choice of background music is a lot better in the 1999 version.The 2011 version didn't really have the appropriate background music at some point.

In conclusion ,both of the adaptation have their up and downs.Instead of comparing both,I will just enjoy watching the 2011 versions for now.And rewatch the 1999 version once I find the remote the the dvd player... Hopely it will reach the chimera ant arc.

Ha, I remember when I was a lurker and joined this forum due to this thread (though I wasn't exactly happy at the time due to everyone bashing the new sereis but oh well, I'm glad both series are getting proper props)

Since my quote reply feature dosn't work on my computer, I'll say it here: I disagree on Gon's design, more specificly his hair. I personally found it a bit of gripe that his hair was so short in the old series, and I never acctually thought he looked exactly like his age so I can't really say I agree too much about your quote saying he looks six, I mean, I always thought he looked a little younger than his age.

As for me, I stated before and I'll state it again, I enjoy the new series, and I'm pretty sure the old one is good too(I've only seen a few eps, but like in your post Akia, I gave up and read the manga because of how slow it was moving, and I was trying to catch up during the manga anyway XD) I could watch the old series and get into these debates about old and new, but I wanna look at it through diffrent eyes, to see how well these folk at madhouse are gonna adapt this manga to TV(hey with the bleach anime ending this march maybe HxH will get its timeslot? XD JK) Sofar Its doing a good job but it definetly has its ups and downs(no kurapika WTF face) but I can't deny they are doing a good job, I mean, yeah killua didn't crush his heart back then, but I still think that was a very nicely executed scene to deal with the fact that they couldn't show the heart. hell it could have been worse, but now I'm rambling.

Well, sucks that HxH's not comming this week, maybe now I can catch up on some other animes Ive been watching...

Illumi's new voice is a lot more better than his old voice IMO, I couldn't understand the reason why they chose a woman to voice him in the old series, I mean he's old enough to be voiced by a man!! It's just like making Gon's VA voice Leorio!!!

I also prefer Gon's, as well as the other main characters' designs in the 2011 anime. Not to say that the 1999 designs were bad (I actually prefer the colour used for clothes in that series), but I disliked the way Gon's hair looked. I mean it was a little short and kind of weird looking.

I'm really not that upset when the violence and gore is toned down. I wouldn't mind it being uncensored but I also don't mind it being censored. At least characters die and don't end up in the shadow realm

On the design, I enjoy the 2011 series design a lot more. I first watched the 1999 series before reading the manga many years later, so when I started reading the first chapters or so, I hated the manga's design, thought they sucked. Turns out I only thought that because it was different, before I finished the first volume I was already liking it even more than 1999 series design.

I would make a really long text comparing both, but I can't bring myself to do it right now, so I'll make a TL;DR version for myself

I love 1999's series, but manga and 2011 series are much better in almost everything, except for music (can't really say which one is better this early, and the manga sadly doesn't have any music :P)

To be frank i never really focused on either of the series designs, I noticed the differences but i didn't care much on which i thought was better. Now since it came to mind, i think Killua's and Hisoka's design impressed me the most. I can't really explain but there something about them that i like. Gon's skinny legs seem to annoy me sometimes, but overall i like the 2011 designs.

As for the comparisons, the 1999 series delivered in some aspects and completely failed in others.The slow pacing is one big part that can make it or break it for some people, i would say the younger audience wouldn't appreciate it that much since there is a lot of things that go on. The friendship aspect and some of the characterization was done good but like i said previously on the threads some of it was done wrong.It's a good series none the less. I honestly just want the 2011 series to catch up to where the older series left off so i can truly determine which was done better. I'm probably gonna be biased towards the 2011 series since the story is being done right but we'll never know until the later arcs come into play.

Anyway, about what you say...That runs true for movies. When a long series is out, complaining about fidelity is essential since it's based on it. To understand my point, please refer to Soul Eater.

17 years old? A 17 years old person looks almost like an adult, and the Gon of the old anime clearly didn't.

I think that in both animes he looks like a 12 years old. But 2011 design is more like the manga, and is more expresive, so I find it better.

It was my belief that anime guys had a strange thing with youth and they draw them either too young or either too developed.

Let me be more clear...

But here He looks a bit younger

And it has those kind of differences all along the series. I was unable to determinate the age by the design, actually.

@thatguy3331-Everyone has different opinion on how the design looks.I personally feel his hair is too tall.Nevertheless,I do respect your opinion on it.That is my first impression I got when I saw the design.I was slightly exaggerating about him looking like 6 but he does look younger than 12.But then again,drawing the character to look their age is always tricky.There is really no right or wrong way to drawing them out.Just like in real life, 2 person of a same age won't have the same size or height.One might look younger than the other.My 15 years old cousin looks 3 years older than his actual age.Particularly when it comes to preteen or teenagers,it is even harder to draw them to look their age.There is the factors of puberty to consider ,as some reach faster than the other and they will look even more matured and older than their actual age.I won't say that the 1999 design Gon is the ideal 12 years old look and size.But that version look more closer to his actual age than the 2011 version.
If I were you,I'll just stick to the 2011 version for now.The 1999 version became a bit faster after the hunter exam arc.Ignoring my initial biased towards the 2011 version of HxH,I do agree with you about madhouse doing a good enough job.

@Beans- Yes,his old voice did sound like a girl.But I don't really know why I like the old one better.Maybe it suits the ominous feel you get from Illumi.The new one didn't really give me that feel.

@CrudeCross- The choice of colour for the clothing in the 2011 version is the one thing I really can't stand.I think Illumi clothing look better in the 1999 version.
The censorship is okay for the 2011 version.so,no comments on that.

@Uriel-Thanks.Like I say earlier in my reply to thatguy331,getting an character age to look their age is a bit tricky.But for the 1999 version of Gon to look like he is 16 -17,maybe it's a bit too far off. I did saw your latest post with the pic of gon.And yes, sometimes he does look older due to the way he was drawn.That is the animator fault.

I say BOTH versions look like Gon is 12 years old. Nippon is an 'older' 12 and Madhouse is a 'younger' 12. Twelve is a pretty tricky age since not everyone grows at the same rate.

Also is Gon even supposed to be 12 right now in the Madhouse version?
Because doesn't he start off as a level in the manga?

Also he could always grow throughout the series.

Anyway,does anyone know when the new season of HxH will start?
