Music was wonderful in this episode. I think all the music placements fit the scenes, and I really like the background music in the beginning. Very nice episode this week. Shizuku was adorable, and the Dark Sonata pictures were mesmerizingly, well, dark. I loved it.

It's interesting that Kurapika said he wears contacts so no one would notice his eyes. I know it was stated in the manga, but I always assumed he only wore contacts during (or starting from) Yorkshin. I guess he was actually wearing them all this time since the beginning, at least in the anime. Meh, details. On a side note, I can't help imagining Celty (from DRRR!!) whenever Kurapika speaks, since they have the same VA and all.

I thought they were going to change the design for Huncyclopedia this week, since we're in Yorkshin now. But I guess not. Maybe when a new OP comes rolling in?

They cut out Gon and Killua's competition all together. I am disappoint. :(

That was way better than I had ever hoped. I loved how Gon vs. Shizuku was animated--I suppose that it is the prelude to the Phantom Troupe's true power.

But I love how the realm of adults is being represented by Madhouse. That short segment of Hisoka staring at Chrollo was so strangely and overtly sexual. I loved the little dark sound effect played atop "Dirge from the dark side."

And Kurapika's conversation with Melody (I just noticed that "Melody" may be an alias due to how often she uses the word in her sentences; Viz's choice to translate "Senritsu" makes sense). The music and direction were fantastic. It was sort of strange and dark, but wonderful. I hope Madhouse continues to build upon Togashi's atmosphere for the arc.

why did they delay it... I was so excited for nothing this week... even only a peek...

and Kurapika in the anime says brown.... they had brown eyes...

I always think the grey effect on his eyes are due to contact lenses...

Because his eyes are brown in the manga, I think.

He wears contact lenses only for York Shin. His eyes are really grey in 2o11 version, otherwise we could not see the scarlet eyes in episode 9 =)

He wear contact lenses since episode 39. Before his eyes looked grey/brown, now they look blue.

A rather enjoyable episode this week, though I second the disappointment of some around here regarding the omission of Gon and Killua's dispute who was present in the manga, and since I'm at it, Leorio's bargain was to brief and I hoped to have it at least equal to how it is in the manga. Of course, those things are not exactly overly important, but the need to cut minor parts of the manga in order to make the show fit it's time constraints, while at the same time including fillers, is one of the things that keep me from enjoy any anime adaptations to it's fullest. It bugs me for real. :/
On the other hand, Daltzorne briefing and Kurapika-Senritsu dialogs where really nicely made, and the cliffhanger is starting to get close to the Togashi level that we see in the manga, which is quite the bonus in my book. =]

That's what's bugging me, actually. The way the he says it (in the subtitles at least) makes me think he has been wearing contacts since the beginning. But that shouldn't be possible because his red eyes were really red and bright when he fought Majitani. The color became dull recently, and we assumed it was because of the contact lenses (or Kurapika restraining himself - or both, even). The difference in brightness suggests that he only wore contacts during Yorkshin.

So... why are his eyes grey before Yorkshin? Or does he just not have brown eyes since birth? ... Special snowflake much? Lol, I kid, I kid. Mostly.

Or maybe I'm just color blind, because I have never seen his eyes brown in the anime. Not once.

They have been always brown.

It's just a grayish brown. Also it depends of the lighting.

Maybe Kurapika has a genetic mutation that gives him grey eyes instead of brown. Or he's a special snowflake. But yeah, this minor change kinda irks me.

It's one thing to omit something because of time constraints. But it's another to omit something and then include fillers in it. Do we need to see the extra conversations between the Nostrade bodyguards? If the fillers are included to help the anime watchers understand the plot better, I'm fine with it. But I feel like some of them are included to stretch out the episodes. The pacing of the series isn't bad, though I was getting anxious there for a moment waiting to see the Ryodan.

Maybe the scene was omitted due to censorship reasons. Who knows? Maybe they can't show a 13 year old with a gambling problem. But in that case, they could've had Killua do something else. But, I think that would've been a worse substitution. So if it had to come down to those two options, I'd rather see that scene taken out. It's not central to the plot or anything.

But, I hope they took it out for time constraint over censorship.

I will be even more disappointed if the lucky dice scenes are taken out in GI.

I'm glad they at least showed a little bit of Leorio's haggling skills. If they take out, or dumb down, the arm wrestling scene, I will be extremely disappoint.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the episode. Madhouse is doing a really good job on the animation quality, flow, and OST, even if they're taking out and adding in extra stuff.

It says OUR eyes are normally brown, not that His eyes are brown. End of story.

And what filler? Everything that was shown today was exactly like in the manga, but in different order.

@Uriel
Hisoka one for example, as it added nothing story wise.

@kindredxiuxiu
It seems we think alike, though I'm problably the one more bugged by those things as I have quite the dislike of animes in general. But as I said, the episode was enjoyable.

We should define what's the concept of filler.Filler episodes are entries in a generally continuous serial that are unrelated to the main plot, don't significantly alter the relations between the characters, and generally serve only to take up space.

This time, it's related to the main plot, adds a lot to the relationship between Hisoka and Kuroro and why He doesn't fight with him and even if takes a bit of space is only to allow the next chapter to be paced a little more fitting.

So it's not a filler properly said, it's just one scene added. Filler is Canary, Filler is the gate without each character opening the doors.

One day I WILL make you give me money for doing this week after week... you have my word!!

-EPISODE 42-

Manga: First part of chapter 71, chapter 72, final scene in chapter 76, chapter 73
Nippon's Adaptation: Second half of episode 50, episode 51, episode 52, part of episode 54.

Episode starts with an introduction about the auctions and market. What has been said came from the first page of chapter 71. And apparently, the competition is absent from here. Nippon's adaptation has kept it along with the results, but Killua's gambling got altered. In the manga based on his description, he probably went to a hoarse race. We see in Nippon's adaptation episode 50 how it went. Killua went to a casino and Gon stuck to online auction sites.

-panel 1-
-Gon: "Let's look around."

-Panel 2-
-Killua: "If only Muumuu Dance hadn't tripped in the final turn. At 12-1, I would've been rolling in dough!"

-panel 3-
-Gon: "Gambling is never the answer."
-Killua: "You shut up!" - "Placing an empty can on the street would yield a better return than you!!"
-Gon: "A win is a win!"
-Gons' box: [5.42 million -> J5,434,997]
-Killua's box: [5.42 million -> 286 million -> 0]

-panel 4-
-Gon: "But now I have a better knack for negotiation, and got lots of inside stories!"
-Killua: "Most people get ripped off just when they think they've gotten the hang of it."

-panel 5-
-Gon: "Anyway, I won!" - "You'll have to do one thing I say."
-Killua: "Yeah, yeah."

BTW... check out the name list and tell me what's funny about it...

In Nippon's adaptation Gon asks Killua to buy him a new phone since he was the winner. In the manga and Madhouse's adaptation it was Killua who pointed out that Gon needs a phone since all hunters should have one.

-Killua: "And why don't you have a cell?" - "All hunters need one!!"
-Gon: "Oh yeah."

Madhouse once again gives us modern day designs with the phones here. But most importantly, the beetle phone is here. Oh, and Leoreo is back as well! The phone's description is as it is, with the except of not mentioning watching and recording TV. Nippon's adaptation also included Killua mispronouncing Leoreo's name joke.

-Leoreo: "Get this Beetle-07. A tad weighty and costly, but..." - "... it works around the world." - "translates 200 languages." - "Watch and record TV."

The haggling part got skipped over.

-panel 1-
-Leoreo: "Hey, how much for two?" - "400k?! No way, I say 80k."
-Merchant: "Forget it then."
-Leoreo: "Hm?"
-Merchant: "How about 95k?
-Leoreo: "102k tops!!"
-Merchant: "C'mon, help a poor kid out!!"
-Leoreo: "500 more!!

-panel 2-
-Killua: "Geez. Now he's haggling in units of ten."
-Gon: "There's a crowd watching us."

And here as well he didn't mention how much he payed for his phone.

-Leoreo: "Haggling is par for the course! I could do far better when I'm on a roll. - "I payed J80,029 for mine!" - "The real deal starts when the guy asks you to leave.

Victory!

Leoreo's knowledge, or should I say ignorance about nen got extended a bit with a part from chapter 76. In Nippon's adaption, this scene is in episode 54.

-panel 1-
-Leoreo: "So..." - "you guys learned nen, right?"

-panel 2-
-Killua: "We sure did."
-Gon: "You're going to learn after applying to school, right?"

-panel 3-
-Leoreo: "No." - "I've learned it already."

-Gon: "Leoreo..." - "That's called Ten, and..."
-Leoreo: "What?!" - "There's more?!"
-Killua: "Figured as much."

Then comes this scene from chapter 72. Introducing the game to leoreo is filler.

Windows or Mac?

I'm pretty sure someone will make this a real site...!

The search part got interrupted by Miluki's struggle from chapter 72. The part about NPC going through walls was omitted. In Nippon's adaptation this scene is in episode 50.

-Miluki: "I traced the whole program!!" - "Why won't any events trigger?!" - "NPCs walk through walls!" - "But I didn't make any mistakes!!"

Nippon's adaptation shows us the inside of Miluki's balloon.

Back to the gang, and the HxH universe got its own Wikipedia as well!

Now back to the guards. Their power walk is missing here too. Dalzollene assigns their positions normaly in Madhouse's adaptation. In Nippon's adaptation he did not assign their positions.

In Nippon's adaptation, while Leoreo and Gon looking up ways to gain money, Killua for some reason says this...

Update: In Viz's translation Killua says "Like a meet market?". A quick search told me a meet market s a place where one looks for sex partners. *

Thanks to kindredxiuxiu for the note

Leoreo then gets back at Killua's earlier joke.

Leoreo's "mike" in the manga and Nippon's adaptation was a piece of wood. In Madhouse's adaptation is a paper roll.

Don't lie... you paused at this scene for ten minutes!

What do you mean I'm the only one who did that?!!

Nen clutch.

In Nippon's adaptation the table got crushed a bit.

While leaving, Shizuku has picked-pocket the bystanders. That did not happen in Madhouse's adaptation.

How sweet! It's Papa Franklin :3

MUST - CRUSH - PUNY - HEAD

Oh sweet God! I really REALLY want to know Shizuku's back story! How did a cutie like her end up with those thugs?!

Brief Phantom Troupe filler in both versions

Nippon's episode 52 started with this filler scene

An added dialogue between Kurapika and Senritsu in Madhouse's adaptation.

Nippon's adaptation did not feature an eerie background when talking about Kurapika's heart beat.

Since they've changed Kurapika's eye color, Nippon's adaptation made all the Kurta's blue eyed instead of brown.

-Kurapika: "Our eyes are usually brown, but turn red when agitated." - "I wear black contacts to escape detection.

The destruction background did not appear in either adaptations when taking about Kurapika's goals.

Darkness Sonata between the versions.

Senritsu's disfigured arm was shadowed like the manga, but Kurapika did not look as disturbed as the manga. Nippon's adaptation did not show the arm.

Senritsu asked Kurapika if he'd like to see an old picture of her. This question was omitted in Madhouse's adaptation.

-Senritsu: "One movement was enough to do this to me." - "Want to see an old picture of me?"

This scene was not shown in Nippon's adaptation.

I prefered Viz's take on this line.

-Senritsu: "I chose this job because I hoped one devil would know another."

Episode ends with this filler scene.

7.5/10

So it's not a filler properly said, it's just one scene added. Filler is Canary, Filler is the gate without each character opening the doors.
Opening the gate is not called "filler". It's called "Altered Scene". It was present in the manga, but done in a different way. Filler is having a scene that's 100% original and not present in the original source material.

In Nippon's adaptation, while Leoreo and Gon looking up ways to gain money, Killua for some reason says this...

This was in the manga too. Except Killua didn't have a dorky, lecherous look on his face.

Apologies if this is a poorly translated scan. I don't have raws.

Again, thanks for doing these comparisons for us!

------

Madhouse's detail never ceases to amaze me, especially the faces on the dolls. And the overall scenery.

Viz's translation of that remark was "Like a meet market?".

*Quick search*

A meet market is a place where one looks for sex partners

I guess I didn't catch on to that. Will add that note.

Now that I've got my comparison and other things out of the way in four forums, I want to discuss two important matters. First in production-wise and the second story-wise.

-First Matter:
Am I the only one who thinks things started to get backwards between the two studios? In the past we've praised Madhouse's adaptation for being the closest and most faithful to the manga. But as of Whale Island arc, it feels Madhouse's quality is getting off track by making unnecessary scene alterations, deleting scenes and lines and adding a lot of filler scenes, and that's started to get on my nerves! If this goes on, the quality of this arc will get lower and it'll make Nippon's adaptation the closest to the manga in a complete contrast to how it was at the beginning.

-Second matter:
How do you think Leoreo learned nen? As seen, he only knows one practice. Did he try to learn it on his own or by a teacher? If he learned by a teacher, then he got himself a bad one if he didn't teach him everything! That, or he went the slow way. Cause as we all know, there are two methods to learn nen: The first is the quick way which is opening the vents by another nen user like what Wing did to the boys, and the other way is the slow way the same as Zushi who took months till he reached his current level that we saw in Heave's Arena arc.

Thanks! That actually makes more sense than him saying "That sounds a little erotic". Since I didn't catch the reference. But uh, I'd imagine Killua would find something that doesn't involve "binding" to be more erotic, given his background and all.

Though I don't understand why his mind would've went to "meet market" either. But I prefer that translation over the other one.

I understand MH's reasoning for expanding on the Flesh Collector's Mansion parts in anticipation for the appearance of the GR. And I think they're deciding to focus a little more on Kurapika's story at the moment over Gon, Killua and Leorio's situations. I hope that after the three get more involved with the GR situation over Greed Island, MH will get back on track.

As someone who's read the manga before, these last few episodes have been painfully slow for me, because of the extra scenes, expansions, and alterations MH has made lately. If I was an anime-only watcher I wouldn't have been as impatient, since these aren't bad fillers or expansions by any means. I'm just falling into that mode where there are upcoming scenes that I really want to see animated, and I don't want to wait another few weeks or so to watch them.

This is a really good question. I think Leorio went the slow way. He's not in any rush like Kurapika/Gon/Killua were in learning nen. He probably sought out a teacher and is going at a leisurely pace while also studying for school. It's possible that Leorio got a bad teacher, but also possible that he got a bad teacher and doesn't care too much. I mean, Leorio isn't the type who wants to get physically stronger... he got his hunter's license, and his current goal is now to become a doctor with the funds, allocated by the hunter's license and all its perks, he builds up.
