Holyland v10 - Help reading a kanji

I can't make out a kanji in one of the pages, and I can't figure out what it might be from context either. Can anyone give me a hand?

Holyland, vol 10, pg 24, panel 3, lower right bubble.

, but they're the same kanji (according to unicode).

客doesn't really make sense to me, how would you translate it?

ehm, correct me if i'm wrong.

お客 [Okyaku]

He's refering to a guest/visitor/customer. So in short, that panel should be:

B1) "Hey hey, hurry up Allen."

B2) "The customers are waiting." [masu points out that they're still waiting]

Problem is, almost any kanji can appear in manga :/ Of course there are some that are generally more common, which can be found on the Jouyou kanji list. There were 1945 kanji on the list initially, but last year this number increased to 2136 (196 new kanji, some deletions). Most of the lists online are the 1945 one.

Depending on the genre of manga you read, you will probably also come across any number of weird kanji that you'll never see in your Japanese class or any kanji lists available on the net. The good thing about manga is that there is usually furigana so you can check a dictionary pretty easily Alternatively you can check out this dictionary site that has a kanji search using kanji radicals. Very useful for when there is no furigana and you have no idea how the kanji is used/read

Saladesu gave a good explanation. It's a good idea to have an elementary school level knowledge of kanji at least.

I'm sorry to say, AnarchyComicsInc, that there's no kanji exempt from manga. In seinen/josei, they expect the readers to have already learnt kanji from their last year of high school so there will be complex vocabulary in those series. There will be no furigana to seinen/josei series as well. It will be easier to read shounen/shoujo with its furigana and simpler vocabulary.

However, the good thing about kanji is that you can understand them... without being able to read them. If you know the bushu, you can have a general idea of what's being said.

Someone please help me read the 4th kanji. I realize it's practically unreadable, but I'm hoping maybe with years of experience, by the overall feel, maybe someone can guess. What I have so far is 武蔵多？川

Hello, and thanks for coming!

I'm working on my first translation and I've come across a person who uses advanced kanji like crazy! At one point the guy thinks to himself:

また反射だけの
卑屈な謝罪や
礼言いやがったら
鬱陶しいな…

Which looks like it's half gibberish to me! As far as I know, what he's thinking is something like a huffy/stuck up way of saying "jeez, this guy is so unthankful/pathetic" but that's just my guess...


And later on another character thinks to himself:

ここここここ
ここで死んだら
アッシュに
殺される

Which is really confusing to me. I know he's referring to a character named Asch, and there's a lot about death in there... So is he saying he's worried that Asch is going to kill him or something?

I think the "mata" here is to connect from the previous sentence.

I- I- I- I- I- If I die here, I'll get killed by Ash

Note that the "korosu" here is being used in the passive form The sentence kinda doesn't make sense (if I die, I get killed...?) but maybe it makes more sense in the context of the manga

You really know your stuff! Lol, when I read the first guy's line I was like, "So that kanji is for pottery... wait, what??"　

I gotta say I love how you first translated it directly and then rearranged it after that, it's so much easier to understand now! I definitely need to work on being able to recognize the order of Japanese! >.<

And, I think the translations are perfect!
Even though the whole Asch killing him after he's dead thing sounds weird at first, in the context of the manga the guy's worried because he still hasn't completed the task Asch gave him, so I think he's just being overly dramatic by saying that...

Personally, 反射的に　instead of 反射だけの would make the sentence sound more natural.

2nd part of 殺される (get killed)　is not about killing.

"If I die here, Asch will kill me." means "If I die here, Asch will get mad at me."

I have to admit I was using Google translate for that line and (as expected) now that I see how it's actually pronounced it was totally wrong in a bunch of places. >.<
Basically, what I've tweaked it around to now is this:

And thanks for clearing up the second guy's line! In context, either way works, but if that's what it literally means I'll go with that!

(1) I was not paying attention to that DISLIKE part before. Would it be "いやがったら?" by an chance? If so, that is not it.

Standard form for "礼言いやがったら" is　"礼を言ったら"
"言いやがったら" is just a rough way of saying "言ったら."

If s/he thanks (me/us e.t.c.)
If s/he shows gratitude

(2) I would just translate as is: "If I die here, Asch will kill me." You don't need to change the translation to "get mad at ..."

Now that you mention it, that's obviously what it means!
The guy who is speaking has always been peeved about how pathetic the guy he's talking about is. And since in the scene he accidentally scared the guy, I think he's basically thinking, "man I hate how wussy this dude is..."
