Yeah, the cover is by Asada-sensei. The tribute manga is a 4-page parody, titled Shiritsu Hachinosu Gakuen (Private Beehive School), by Kotarou (コタロー).

Also, dunno if this is old news, but vol.4 of Tegami Bachi will be released on 5/2.

by the title would it be possible its by the gag manga dude who does shiritsu poseidon gakuen or whatever its called that lives in WSJ?

and i don't think the TOC would mean anything this early on if they did do a rating system, as the anthology is still really fresh.

one a side note, what would any of you consider the staple series of Jump SQ for you (excl. the MJ castoffs of course)

Well I don't know for me perse, since I haven't read all of the series yet. But I'd bet that Shiki, Tista, Luck Stealer, and Tales of Innocence may be among the favorites. We'll have to see the tank sales after their initials volumes go on sale.

It was a series of light novels before it became a manga so I doubt that's the case.
actually it's kind of interesting to see how many of the JSQ series are tie-ins to other media.
Shiki = light novel
Tales of Innocence = video game
Kure-nai = light novels
Dragonaut = anime

I'm not that sure about what is a staple series . . . but if talking about what are the series that are probably amongs the favorites, I think it should be Embalming, Tegami Bachi and maybe Tista, Shiki or Kure-nai.

Though I like Tales of Innocence the second out of all the JSQ series and it becomes a lot more popular than other Tales series manga (most of them are unnoticed. RAW are very hard to find, since I think only two others out of six others are serialized in magazines, and it's not the magazine that draw that much attention among manga community anyway. Others just got the tankanbons, I think =_="), I still don't think that it is among the most popular for some reason I can't explain. @_@"

Have to say though, I'm quite surprised that it is the first the only one JSQ series (I think) right now that got translate into Thai, despite of the fact I can named only about 10 Thai manga community that is still providing online manga translations into Thai, mostly only of popular series >_<")

And I did noticed that many of manga in JSQ are tied to some other media as well. (add Rosario & Vampire II in though most of the ties, like anime and games, are from the first season >_<") . . . just curious now, who actually follow the other media as well as the manga? I did ask this before in ToI thread, no one answered (assuming that not very many in here actually played ToI @_@ ). But I'm curious about other ones as well. ^_^"

A staple series would be something like what One Piece/Bleach/Naruto are to WSJ. I guess a more accurate term would be... anchor series? (like in shopping malls, there are "anchor" tenants like Sears and Macy's. Basically they're the stores that draw the majority of shoppers, just like OneBleato draw the majority of JUMP readers.)

In that sense, I believe Embalming is definitely intended to be a JSQ anchor series from the start, as were most of the Monthly Jump imports (Claymore, Tegami, Rosario especially). As for those that began in JSQ, Shiki and Kure-nai bring their novel fan base and ToI brings in the game fans. Dragonaut brings... GONZO fans? Add to those Tista and Luck Stealer and they've got a pretty strong base of anchors.

and by tie-ins to media I meant the series that are based on sources other than manga. Rosario doesn't count because it was running as a manga before the anime (that's also why I didn't include Claymore in that list), but the Dragonaut manga is made as an offshoot of GONZO's anime project.

For the next issue (July, on sale 6/4), there will be a new series starting, Binbougami ga! (貧乏神が!) by Sukeno Yoshiaki (助野嘉昭). One shots will feature an extra chapter of Yuusha (serialised in WSJ), a one-shot by Nishi Yoshiyuki (mangaka of Muhyo to Rouji that was serialised in WSJ). Series with center colour pages are Tista, Embalming and Matsuri.

somehow i don't see this TOC as rankings, considering how Matsuri has pulled off a fairly good colour count.

gotta say, embalming as a whole isn't that pleasing a series in Jump SQ really... shame

Yeah, I don't know if we should believe that the SQ ToC works the same way a WSJ one does. Ranking series in popularity is nearly impossible for monthly magazines, since they only get feedback from readers every month, instead of every week.
