🙏 Impressive work Sanse & other purebloods.

We can do further adjustments to some roles and rules depending on post-game feedbacks, though it all should work well.

MAFIA GAME 2.6 PATCH NOTES: GOODBYE MY LOVER, GOOD BYE MY ASS(ASSIN)

General Game Change:

Day abilities cannot be used in the last hour of the day phase.

Role Mechanic Change:

-Innocent Child can't be assigned any non-townie secondary roles.

(Interactions are still all the same as before, but it should be remarked that Mafia Pirate CAN steal this role and Mentor CAN recruit the Innocent Child).

-When Apprentice dies, all it shows is "Apprentice" regardless if the player learnt a role or not. The same applies for the Insane Apprentice, unless it learns a non-townie role, in that case it shows the name of its new role.

-Mafia Apprentice's name is now Mafia Rookie.

-Mentor and Mentee can start the game together.

-Super Masons can start the game together.

-When a Super Mason joins the Masons, their secondary role changes to Recruited Super Mason.

-The passing of a Hot Potato cannot be blocked.

-Aditionally, Necromancer, Hot Potato and Super Mason were added to the main rules and removed from the "Roles Being Tested".

New roles:

Police Officer (Townie): Each Day Phase the Police Officer can pick 3 people to protect from day killing actions. If one of them got targeted by such, the kill fails and the Police Officer loses one of these protections (he's notified accordingly at the end of the day phase), leaving him with one less for following day phases. The Police Officer must send all his picks at once and he's not allowed to change these during the day.

Psychiatrist (Townie) The Psychiatrist investigates one person per night phase to see if the player has a Secondary Role. They get a "Your target has a secondary role" if that is the case, and a "Your target does not have a secondary role" if it's not. The Psychiatrist does not find out the allegiance of the target.

Troublemaker (Townie) Can once per game message the host during the Night phase to make the next Day phase lynch be the top 2 voted people instead of regular 1 top voted person. Every player has 2 votes but cannot vote the same player twice. The Host announces this event at the start of the Day.

Thanks every council member including the newest members, @SonOfDaws and @desin24

MAFIA GAME 2.6.1 PATCH NOTES: NOT SO HOT-FIX

The following has been added to the main rules:

New infraction

Following the basic forum rules and the Fun Forum guideline:

-Players are not allowed to insult nor bash each other, this will not be tolerated and will be punished.

The infraction will follow the standard host approach for minor violations of: firstly, a warning -> a penalty if the problem persists -> three penalties -> finally, a hostkill.

We won't ban players retroactively, this new violation will apply from Game 88 onwards.
New Infraction:

-You are expected to play to your win condition(s). Intentionally undermining your team or joining a game with the sole intent to troll is not allowed. ("Bad" or "alternative" plays, however, are allowed, if you sincerely believe in their merit.) Remember that while you are playing for fun, others take the game seriously. Please do not play against your win condition or play in a manner that is deliberately harmful to your side, regardless of how small your chances are.

This infraction will follow the host's judgment or, if needed a second opinion, the Council's. It's recommended that the hosts don't do anything with the infractor during the game and only do so once the game is over.

Rule Change:

From:

-You are not allowed to post any screenshots, PMs or anything similar that can reveal your role, or the role of others, neither fake host PMs. If you do, you will be hostkilled and banned from future games (Hall of Shame).

To:

-You are not allowed to quote or screenshot PMs relating to the game, this includes quoting your Host, your role PM, or any private communication with other players. (You may, however, paraphrase in a way that leaves room for reasonable doubt). If you do, you will be hostkilled and banned from future games (Hall of Shame). Fake screenshots and quotes will be treated the same as genuine ones.

Role Mechanic Change:

-Lovers are not allowed to openly reveal names of Mafias at any point with the intention to ruin the game.

"Roles being tested" are now simply "New Roles" and have been added to the Main Rules.

Allow Noble to use its full potential.

The people voting last min, and you take away that power from noble.

  • Added the change of Bomb Defuser and Mafia Bomb Defuser to the role list. In short, it used to just target 1 time and regardless if you hit a Bomb or not role cannot be used anymore. Now it can target every night until you hit a Bomb, then Bomb is defused and player is told by host "You defused a Bomb-type role". Much stronger and more usable than before.

MAFIA GAME 2.9.9.9 PATCH NOTES: WOW NEW TEXT

  • The role list has been remastered: roles are reordered and the role text itself has been updated. Hopefully, it is less wordy now. Some slight changes were made to certain roles, especially mafia and TP role roles, so please check those out.
  • Similarly, the rule list has been remastered: information is now grouped slightly differently and hopefully more legible for beginning players who have no idea how the game is played.
  • Both the role list as well as the rule information that generally goes in the top header of the opening post will be in effect starting with game 116

MAFIA GAME 3.0. PATCH NOTES: PATCHYCEPHALOSAURUS

The following changes will apply to game 127 and onwards

  • The interaction thread has been updated to match the new roles and rules

  • The post-counter is the indicator determining the amount of posts a player has. Auto-merges are not considered separate posts, but one larger post. Therefore, to avoid penalties, a player must always improve their post-counter count by at least 3 (unless stated otherwise) by the end of every day phase.

  • The Investigator has been moved to the role cemetery. Hopefully, Janitor is now more playable, allowing team comps to seriously consider using this role without fearing Investigator being in the game.

  • All roles with meaningfully altered role text have been marked by a ❗ Please check out the list to gain a full understanding. All changes will be discussed below in the way they are ordered in the role list.

  • The Police Officer now targets their 3 beneficiaries at night. They are still informed at the end of the Day Phase if any of their protections were used. This is to prevent any time scramble or role queue shenanigans that would mess with the flow of the game.
  • The Bulletproof Townie text now simply states that the player cannot be killed at night by any means, but does die to suicidal deaths (such as Hot Potato). This is largely a clarifying bit of errata.
  • The Healthy Townie now negates any effect that would prevent them from voting. Previously, the text erroneously stated that only Sickly was negated, now any effect (including NVD) are neutralized by the role.
  • The Prosecutor's text now clearly states the order in which actions are processed (Prosecutor kill first, lynch second) and helpfully clarifies that the second-most voted player dies next should the top-voted player be killed by the Prosecutor.
  • The Avenger, once their conditions were met, used to target a player to kill on the first night, who would then die the second night (a conditional town Poisoner, if you will). This was unnecessarily clunky; the role has now been altered so the Avenger can use a simple priority 3 kill during the next night. This way there's less space between the marked target dying and the avenger's vengeance.
  • Bomb and Mafia Bomb both now clearly state they will die on any killing action, not just night actions.
  • Hot Potato now clearly states that passing is optional and dying to Hot Potato counts as a suicidal death.
  • Bomb Defuser and Mafia Bomb Defuser have some errata changes, but the roles remain unchanged.
  • Mason, Mafia Mason and Mason Recruiter now all three include the potentiality of already starting out with a Mason in their team (or starting in a Mason team, if they are a Mason).
  • Furthermore, Mason Recruiter now helpfully states that the recruited player learns of the full Mason team upon recruitment.

  • The Traitor text now helpfully states that the secondary role disappears upon successful recruitment. Also in case it was missed previously, the Traitor now suicides in the phase following their last teammate's death.
  • Mafia Doctor text now states that any player can be protected like a real Doctor could. Previously, the text erroneously stated that Mafia Doctor could only target mafia members.
  • Mafia Poisoner now cannot be negated by the Doctor. Like with Janitor, Poisoner hopefully is now more playable, allowing teams to seriously consider the merit of a delayed kill.

  • Serial Killer text specifies the list they receive features roles as seen by the players (not as seen by the host). This is largely a clarifying bit of errata.
  • Santa text now specifies that Santa cannot gift themselves, nor can the gifts involve an effect that targets themselves (e.g., Santa can't gift someone the inability to vote for Santa).

  • Thank you council members for labouring to make these changes happen 🙏

MAFIA GAME 3.1 PATCH NOTES: CONSTITUTIONAL UPDATE

The following changes will apply to game 134 and onwards

  • The rules thread has been updated. We recommend you glance over it once you have a chance. We will discuss important changes and/or updates here. Rest assured, there are not many major changes.
  • We aimed to update the rules to include our conventions and traditions - that is to say, unwritten rules - in our ruleset, so that it is easier to refer to and point out mistakes.

  • The minimum postcount per day has been bumped from 3 to 5.
  • We have removed the max 100 post cap. Not only has this probably never been a big issue, if this kind of post count was achieved through spamming, that is still, of course, punishable.
  • We added a clause that states Hosts may end days earlier if enough (locked) votes have been placed on a Player to guarantee their death.
  • We added some colour to the workings of DeadPad

  • Quite important, we have now formally stepped away from the penalty vote system. For some time, we have been trialling it, but we are now moving to make it official.
    • Penalty votes, in theory, work to deter bad behaviour by putting pressure on the transgressing party. More votes make them more likely to die and therefore less likely to win, which is undesirable to them.
    • However, in practice, this does not work out that way. First, the transgressor might break a rule, but if they were not already suspicious, it is unlikely they would actually be voted out intentionally by the town. At most, the non-town players capitalise on rulebreakers, putting themselves in a vulnerable position. Therefore, rather than punishing said Player, it effectively punishes their whole faction. In the late game, this can and has been game-deciding.
    • In certain cases, this can put Hosts in a tough position: punishing a Player through penalty votes can adjourn an otherwise better or more popular lynch, or extend the game into another Night, escalating the effective damage done through this measure
    • Furthermore, a Player racking up significant amounts of penalty votes might already be less interested in good faith gameplay, making the penalty votes even less effective as a measure to punish bad behaviour
  • Instead of penalty votes, we punish Players now through violations. Violations are granted to the transgressing party for the same reason as penalty votes. After a warning, if appropriate, the Host decides if they should issue a violation.
  • Three violations result in an HK. Two violations require the Player to affirm that they will behave and play well. It is up to the Host's discretion to escalate violations as they see fit.
  • The main advantage of this system is that the game is not interrupted by a single player's misbehaviour. Additionally, the Host no longer needs to weigh game state versus transgression, for a Player's misbehaviour no longer directly influences tactics by the other side.
  • The updated rules provide something of a framework to determine how many violations are appropriate.

  • We added a section called "reporting" that provides the Players with a voice to address the game atmosphere. Essentially, if you think some behaviour is out of place or inappropriate, you can address the Host, who may take these signals to address bad behaviour by a specific player.
  • We added a section that outlines Host Kill and Substitution. Substitution was already an unspoken part of the game, but we have now added specific rules that state the Host should not list the Sub to the public player list, nor should they be invited to the DeadPad (even if it is spoiler-free, impressions from other players may still offer them an advantage). Subs do not inherit the violations of the Player they replaced.

  • Finally, not unimportantly, we have enshrined the Host themselves in the rules as well. The Host, of course, is the centrepiece of any game: their actions and decisions before, during and after the game influence the game experience more than any Player could. We have outlined the skills, duties and qualifications to host in the final section of the ruleset.
  • We have added rules that concern sign-ups as well: not only must they be done publicly, but a Host may be given reason to refuse certain players from playing if there are fair and reasonable grounds for this. One of these could be a portion of the player base objecting to their participation, based on past gameplay.
  • Lastly, we have formalised the Main Host/Co-Host system a bit. Unspoken rules that never did crystallise now have some shape to them
    • A main-host-list was created based on people who have hosted (either recently, or a lot) and are considered experienced enough to run a game by themselves, without help, and can reasonably be expected to handle all parts of the game
    • If you were not on this list, but feel like you should be, you can contact @Copy Panda to request your addition to the list
    • To become a main host, you must first co-host with an existing main host.
    • After the game ends, the main host must post a review of the co-host’s contribution in the game thread. This review should explain how the main host prepared them, what responsibilities the co-host handled, what they did well, and any areas needing improvement. The Council will use this review when deciding whether to add the co-host to the main host list.
    • This means that before we consider adding the co-host, we expect the main host to post a fair and comprehensive review that, too, will be reviewed for accuracy.
  • Thank you, council members, for spending your precious time on this 🙏
