@ barba

Um, well I have not heard of that? >.>
I doubt it, the country does not have other industries developed nor international relations that well, but I am willing to look into it.

@ Matt

I would but that process is even harder here., plus it's a hard choice. The again everything is closed off here for now, from the rest of the world, it's harder getting things and doing things.

As for which manga I would buy if I had the chance, probably start a library, like I did with books, collect them, buy them weekly or monthly if that is the case, since it will be my first time buying them, I don't know hard choice to pick something, probably some newer volumes of Berserk, the art would be wonderful to view!

I do not know if seinen manga can be like this, although probably not the genre to mix with seinens, but are there any manga that bring together mythical creatures, myths and stuff and old fairy tales from children books? Probably something like characters are drawn in Berserk, medieval style I guess.

I think I've encountered some like that... I just can't remember... one-shots, maybe.

Anyways its not a far-fetched idea since a lot of contemporary literary works, not manga, do use children's stories a lot and twist them into gruesome or scary tellings. So if it happens with western literature, how much more in manga where the japanese tend to be more... er... adventurous? :p

That is the problem that I would have with such a manga being shounen, it would focus on adventure and fights and stuff that myths actually are not, that is why a manga with a story and combination of fairy tales and myth would fall under seinen, it does not need to be scary or violent I suppose, even though myths tend to be like that.

But indeed today many use that and cartoon in the western world are a manifestation of children stories and real life most of the time, in Japan they have a different tradition but I think such manga can be found. :)

Well, Ryuguden is loosely based on the tale of Urashima Taro.

Um yes so I started it.^^

Really had to stop after chapter 15 though, I really enjoyed the first volume a lot, and the series would have been good just doing the first one, this second one started off good but something about it bothered, where is the Ryuguden thread here so we can discuss?

Oh snap. >_<

So yeah discussion here in spoiler tags unless someone wants to start it ok?
So I really liked the fish guy as being just a normal villain not evolving too much, plus Ani not falling in love was a good deal until in volume 2 he did, it would have been good if only Bo had the love thing with the fish girl and it should have developed form there. But Ani is an easier target with his love for the fish guy. And the whole story about the past was rather unsuited in the middle of things, perhaps it could have been done later. So yeah I will try and finish it these days out of curiosity but volume one was indeed epic and interesting, the pace and stuff in the second was what got me off.

Well, I loved pretty much all of it. Especially the explanation about the past etc.
Also it's been more than 5 years since I read it, so it's kind of hard to delve into details for myself. I think I'm gonna reread it though.

I do hope you realize you are able to start threads about any series you want to discuss. There's no need to wait for a mod to start it. In fact, I would encourage you to do so. :)

I've been reading (and using as a translating exercise) Hakuba no Oujisama (Prince on a White Horse). It's a 10-volume manga by Yukizo Saku, who also wrote Self; a manga about masturbation which was partly scanlated some time ago by some guy/group called c_k. Anyway it's pretty good so far; the angle and tone is pretty mature. It focuses on two high school teachers, one newly appointed male teacher called Kotaro Ozu (25) who has to learn the ropes from an older female teacher (Takako Hara, 32). Ozu isn't interested in younger women, and Hara is insecure about being single at her age.

I've got to say, I'm kind of excited with some of the licensing announcements today. Yen Press licensed Thermae Romae and Mori Kaoru's short story collection 'Anything and Something'. Also, Dark Horse licensed Hiroaki Samura's short story collection 'Emerald and Other Stories'. The latter two I especially can't wait for. Money is kind of tight and I can't afford to follow long series anymore. These single volume books are exactly what I am looking for manga licensing companies to acquire.

Anyone know a good tragedy/drama like manga? I mean really classical tragedy stuff, though a tragedy that involves some modern plots can do as well, thanks. :)

Tragedy in the Sophocles sense of the word? Nothing really comes to mind, except maybe Griffith in Berserk.

Yeah, Aristotelian like, though anything that has a tragic connotation to it, something to get you thinking as well. So a more modern plot would do as I said, of course if the manga is more epic the better, a tragic quest or along those lines. It is really hard to find a character done that way though, even manga.

Not sure if this is the right place for me to be asking, but couldn't find any recommendation thread.

As I was reading through the "most disturbing seinen titles" thread, the author Kago Shintaro was mentioned. I don't know any of his work, but since he was mentioned in that thread, I'm kind of curious now. So I was hoping that someone could recommend one or several manga by him, that I should definitely read???

Kago's manga are not for everyone, more people than not find him highly offensive. If you are interested I recommend starting with Abstraction, a one shot mentioned in the disturbing titles thread. If you enjoy Abstraction try Dance Kremlin Palace. While his manga can be very offensive, Kago has an amazing sense of humor. There is some great, black humor in his manga, particularly Dance Kremlin Palace. I need to read his latest title, Anamorphis, which I have downloaded, but have not had the chance to read.

Shamo is another good one, always glad to see more fans. Hopefully volume 27 is scanlated soon.
