Well.... there are 2 reasons: one is a fanfiction theory. (but very HIGHLY plausible) the other I will explain a bit further.
The first reason is a fanfiction theory I believe to be VERY plausible; Minato had time-traveled to the future from his present using an advanced Hiraishin he invented by accident. Thanks to his time-traveling, he found out what he did and what will happen several years ahead of his time. Then, using that information/knowledge, he prepared several things for the Kyuubi attack. And he also found about Madara as well. This was after he traveled to a time-line where the Ninja war had ended.
Minato (according to the story) had wanted to do something to help Naruto. Therefore, he traveled to different points in the future to get more details about the events that would happen. When he arrived during the Kyuudaime's rule, he found the big Jackpot he was looking for. He found out (or may have just gotten a general idea) about him sealing himself and Kushina inside Naruto. Not only that, he also found about Madara attacking Konoha by ripping Kyuubi out of Kushina and about him waging the 4th Shinobi War. Therefore, he provided countermeasures for the events that were about to transpire.
Think about it, how could've Minato known that Naruto would go so far as 8TK?? not only that, if he chose to appear at 4TK, it wouldn't have been right. Why?? Because it wasn't the point where he needed his father's help to get through his Emo state. That was merely because of pure rage. When he turned to 8TK, he wasn't filled with rage, he was also filled with doubt and so much pain unlike he's felt before. Minato chose the 8TK state because it was the right moment for him to enter. Not only that, how COULD he have known Naruto would later on try to control Kyuubi. Konoha obviously didn't have the training facility that Kumo had. Which means, there's a high chance Naruto would fail. If you ask me, it's as if Minato knew KB would become one of his masters and teach him about Bijuu control. What's even more crazy; the Rasengan.
It may have been a bit of a coincidence, but if I think about it, Bijuu Rasengan may have been something Minato intended not only for Kushina, but also for Naruto. Proof; RM. How could he have managed to get the idea for making a Bijuu Rasengan for Jinchuurikis?? In fact, Rikudou Mode seems to be the requirement for Bijuu Rasengan. And I don't think Kushina's Bjuu mode was RM at all.
Next is Minato's actions during that night. Minato concluded that the masked man is Madara. Just how did he come to a conclusion like that?? it could've been anyone really. Minato asked the masked man's identity but I think it was merely to get a reaction out of him and try to read his body if he's lying or not. The reason is simple. He already knew he was Madara but he was merely trying to confirm it that night.
Next is him sacrificing himself when Kushina told him to live instead. This is what really tipped me off to make me believe in the theory. Minato is a smart man, he knows that messing the time-line so drastically would be wrong, it's the same as playing god. But Minato is definitely someone who doesn't intend to do so. He merely wants to try to find a way to alter the timeline while not creating such a huge impact on it. I think, if I had to describe it, Minato wanted his "impact" to be nothing more than a drop of water falling to the ground. That's what I think he planned to do. Minato believed that changing the time-line so drastically would be wrong. It would create a parallel universe. So, Minato decided to tweak the timeline a bit, without having major changes occur. In short, what I'm trying to say is that Minato already knew that his alternate self had already sealed Kyuubi in Naruto. And he couldn't change it because it would be very wrong. Therefore, Minato decided to use Shiki Fuujin because it had to happen that way. Otherwise, his plan could be ruined.
What plan, you may ask?? This:
There's been the rumor going around that RM will release the ET zombies from Kabuto. It's because of Naruto's Yang energy that's leaking out from RM.
I think it's partly true, though. It won't release the ET zombies but it will release Minato from ET. I think Minato may have designed that RM is to react to Minato's chakra so that it can resurrect him. Hell, he may have even planned for it to react to Kushina's chakra as well.
Minato wants to be resurrected at a time where it won't cause a lot of commotion. Well, this is it.
According to the theory, Minato intends to be resurrected at a time where his return won't cause a commotion.
You may ask: if Minato could time-travel, why didn't he go back in time to kill Madara?? the answer is: he can't. He'd create a parallel universe. Who knows what would happen???
The best plan that Minato can do in that circumstance is to literally do exactly as he did. Set small little things that don't change the main time line too drastically, but do affect and help Naruto as he grows, and ensure that when the time's right he and possibly Kushina can return.
Now next is the non-fanfiction theory. Minato sealed Kyuubi in Naruto for the reasons he's stated in the manga, he wanted to prevent a war so he had to turn his son into a Jinchuuriki. Plus, he knew it would be needed to fight Madara. Minato had to use Shiki Fuujin because you'd need a number of people to balance the Bijuu's chakra in order to seal it. I'd say a normal Bijuu sealing would need a lot of preparation time. The fastest way to seal something on the scale of a Bijuu is to call on the Shinigami.

Well, that's it for my thoughts. Boy, that was the longest post I've ever made.

About Naruto, this quote helps explain what Naruto is trying to do:
This is what Naruto is trying to do. He's trying to get Sasuke see the error of his ways, but after that, he could really care less about what happens to Sasuke after that. He knows Sasuke's sins are already that heavy, that there's no way to weasel him out of his punishment. So he is actually accepting that fact. Too bad the only one who can see what Naruto's trying to do is Jiraiya and he's gone now. Although Bee and Shikamaru might be able to.Jiraiya argued while they fought, knowing he'd not change Orochimaru's mind, just trying to get him to understand his mindset and why he thought his was better.
Well, that's it for my thoughts. Boy, that was the longest post I've ever made.

Seeing minato manage to beat Madara the way he did is still better than the way Pain was beaten by Naruto .
