Been a looooong time since a post on this thread. I saw an amazing post about language formality and Rachel on Reddit and wanted to share.


Basically the author is saying that Rachel uses formal language to gain advantage in relationships rather than make real relationships. This is something we don’t see in a translated work, so we lose that dimension a little. Pretty cool analysis IMO.

That is really interesting.

I'm not sure if I completely believe that we can read into the way she speaks to quite that degree. Mainly because SIU putting that much thought and effort into every moment of her narrative voice would be pretty ridiculous. So I have to suspect it's not quite as deliberate as that. But it's interesting to know about that formal language thing and I do agree with most of the core points.

That sort of makes sense though I kinda get the impression a lot of it has been lost in translation. It's good to keep in mind though, it gives us insight into how rachel could be thinking when making her schemes.
