I wasn't too sure about that. Luffy and the other strawhats were perfectly ok with her wanting to be or claiming to be oden. Momo and the scabbards were uncomfortable with it but seem to also just not say anything after yamato helped defeat kaido. So I have no idea of what oda is doing here.
That’s because they hadn’t seen the worst of it. If Yamato started doing things like a suicidal pact to get boiled, what would they say then?

I found this on the wiki:

" Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary (Card #0377), In the online revision of Lucci's card, the wording is changed from "Also learned Haki recently," to "Also strengthened his Six Powers-related Haki". "

While I've always believes a number of "special" martial arts techniques like cutting anything and rokushiki are haki adjacent at least there's never been a clear cut explanation of the manga regarding this. Anyone knows what the card actually says?

It would be a little bit of a retcon, but Haki wasn’t really a fleshed out thing back then and it would make sense for those techniques to be Haki based, and now that Haki is basically the best power in the world it would be kind of dumb if cp9, the supposedly strongest cp until Oda came up with cp0, didn’t know how to use Haki.

Like someone was presumably training them in the martial arts styles, surely they’d also be training them to use the one thing that is the only surefire way to defeat devil fruit users with crazy abilities.

My guess is that haki itself is not really a retcon but how it functions has been reworked a number of times. I can't look at shank's interaction with the sea king and not think oda had at least an idea of conqueror haki back then.

When thinking about this sort of thing I always end up going to how zoro learning to cut metal (or to not cut) against daz bones. As in, it's impossible for that skill to not be haki related. The idea that it isn't is just absurd. But obviously zoro at the time was not coating his blade in armor haki. Something which scopper told zoro sort of stuck with me... He told zoro that haki needs awareness. I think that as one grows stronger the body sort of slowly gains awareness of it. And with sufficient awareness you eventually become capable of each color but before that there's stuff you can tap into. Like cutting metal or sensing intent or danger. As in, those are stepping stones to actual awareness.

To add to that, by that logic rokushiki would seem to be almost designed to awaken haki in practitioners.

I feel like Zoro was using Haki against Daz Bones, but Oda just hadn’t really figured out what Haki was (and kind of still hasn’t to this day) yet.

It’s obvious that Haki was always planned to be a thing, the Shanks vs Sea King thing is proof of that and if you watch the Live Action, which Oda is super involved in, they make it super clear for manga readers that Shanks used Haki there.

Telling what is and isn’t Haki for pretimeskip stuff just gets a bit complicated, because Oda hadn’t decided to make it easier for us by just adding black for all Haki attacks. I remember Garp smacking Luffy around at least once or twice and Luffy being confused about why it hurt even though he’s rubber. (Doing my very best to not go into a rant about why Garp utterly failed when training Luffy as a kid by not telling him anything about Haki, even though he knows it’s literally the most important skill anyone can have.)

To me the marineford and hardening stuff is simply oda lying to readers to not give away this basic plot element. It's not an issue of him at that point in the story not having settled on what haki was going to be like, he simply lied to the audience. Probably to not have to explain haki further at a time where the narrative was packed.

I think its like how we can chalk Zoro's Ashura up to a prototype of CoC it manifesting haki/will.

Oda being wishy washy with how Haki works allows him to chalk anything up to haki now

I wonder if the anime remake will add in Haki signifiers for the pretimeskip stuff.

Given the setting I wouldn't be surprised if asura was also related to haki. Though at this point I'm pretty sure that most people would disregard the possibility that oda planned this(while I do think certain things are haki related I am not sure of how I'd feel about an azura reveal myself).

Meh SBS this go round if that's everything. Just some Gram Polo hype and the French actor catching some strays for no reason.

43? Rocks seemed much older for some reason.
Well that's probably because he isn't attractive guy. Look at Reuven for example, at barely 21 he looked like 40 something man. And all of that because he had "unfortunate face structure".

???

I liked all the other stuff, it was a pretty typical SBS. Especially the insight into the ridiculous line from Pell about "there's only five abilities that can fly". A writer demanding limitations of himself within the dialogue is hilarious when you consider Shiki's devil fruit was made without his input. The creative frustration he must've felt when given that news lmao

Agreed. I really loved Oda's way of addressing the issue.

The Shamrock question however felt like a wasted one. I mean technically identical twins could have successive birthdays if they are born around midnight, but that's it, lol.

That's fair. The line is ridiculous in hindsight, but I felt that we all (as readers) already used the same logic that Oda did in assuming that Pell didn't know what the hell he was talking about in universe and things just change in scope for a long term series out of universe. So I didn't really consider that reveal all that interesting.

that one really felt like Oda bestowing upon himself the rare opportunity to dunk on his fandom so I didn't mind it

it's an interesting example of a relatively fresh-faced writer using narrative conventions that his older self would kinda scoff at. idk i guess i just care more about the process than most fans do?

having a character speak authoritatively about a "rule" in the magic system of the world is a silly strategy for a self-imposed limitation like the flying ability thing and seeing the author acknowledge that directly is cool as hell imo

The final part of the SBS was still missing
Didn't know Franky's new VA is half German.
