I like Luffy alot more in the live action, I feel like they made him too much of an idiot in the manga/anime.

I didn't get the same vibe from the Live action, he seems to be a lot more thoughtful, self aware and well spoken.

Turning that exactly same Luffy from the pages of the manga to screen wouldn't have been good. It works in the comic realm, but on screen in more real world he would have come across a total lunatic or even sociopathic.

Reading your opinions later.

My gf and are on the last episode, so the climax will come soon.

So far the pros:

Zoros, Namis, Garps, Usopps and Buggys Actors. Really dig them.

The settings and costumes are just great.

Swordfightingaction looks badass.

Some storyelements that were cut down work really good. (Cpt. Kuro)

Neg.:

Nojiko(god damn that was a downgrade and not because she is black)., The size of Garp, Morgan and co., Some important dramapieces felt not really dramatic. (Mihawk...as much as it pains me), Shanks actor also doesnt work for me.
And the fishmen look horrendous.

In general: I enjoy it. Maybe my bar for netflix is so low, that this show feels good but it has enough of the real one piece that i feel satisfied.

Especially i enjoy finding the eastereggs. Be it the bountyposter for Cavendish or binks sake playing in the background.

I feel like they brought him to a more realistic level here. Some of Luffy's personality quirks are unrealistic even by manga standards. I also feel like there's a very, very, very microscopically small gap in the maturity level of kid-Luffy and current-Luffy.

Yes. In contrast to the LA.
Yeah I agree, although Oda is able to make Luffy enjoyable I am quite tired of the over powered Idiot trope(in all types of shounen). I personally think that OP would still be enjoyable if Manga Luffy was like LA Luffy. Perhaps it's just recency bias...

(Episode 1: Romance Dawn - 7.5/10
Episode 2: The Man in the Straw Hat - 8/10
Episode 3: Tell No Tales - 6.5/10
Episode 4: The Pirates Are Coming - 7/10
Episode 5: Eat at Baratie - 8/10)

Episode 6: The Chef and the Chore Boy - 7.5/10

I think the main thing the series suffers from is not quite having time to establish characters and really build up to those hard-hitting emotional climaxes. The show moves so quickly most of the time and doesn't really give you time to get invested enough for those moments to pay off the way they have the potential for.
That said, Sanji and Zeff's arc was the one I *felt* the most so far, much thanks to their backstory being one continuous narrative instead of spliced in here and there, but even there the set-up for him joining the crew and saying farewell felt pretty abrupt (though the actual farewell scene was definitely the closest I've gotten to tearing up).

The Garp/Koby storyline is still the least interesting one to me... I'd have liked them to take some of that screen time and put it elsewhere if I'm being honest. It's not bad, definitely has its moments, but it just feels... a little repetitive. Especially Koby feels like he just exists to look anxious and worried in every scene, and Garp to just be obstinate and grumpy. They have slight moments of character progression but imo not enough to warrant taking this much screen time from the main storyline.

Arlong is better and more intimidating than I thought he'd be for sure. Really liked the vibe and dialogue in this first proper scene we got of him.

It's been a feeling kind of from the start but Luffy really doesn't feel very... strong, in this show. There's not much of a sense of "Luffy is here so everything is going to be okay". He very much feels like just a guy who happens to have DF powers. It's something I've had to adjust to but in the end, it's not Luffy's physical strength that wins people over; not in the manga, and not here. So it's not really a bad thing. This episode showed this version of Luffy's emotional character growth which was a highlight, different from manga Luffy but I think works very well here.

Overall a good episode, despite my little criticisms. Also a special mention to Sanji's child actor, great performance!

My theory is that Oda did it as a way to get around having to reveal stuff to us readers. News travels around the OP world, and stuff like the current Shichibukai, Yonko would all be known by the wide public. He designed Luffy to "not care" about any of that so that he has time to develop the characters a bit before he decides what he wants there. He extends this to Chopper, too (remember when Chopper cut up the newspaper thus making it so we couldn't get news?)

It's an odd writing style since it omits widely known information from the reader, explicitly (tells you the information exists, but doesn't present it). "There are Seven Shichibukai who are government sanctioned pirates. They are extremely powerful and likely to be problematic in your quest."
Luffy response: "Oh, cool." *picks nose*

I feel like the LA is setting itself up to avoid some of that at least.

I found it interesting that Luffy actually listened to his crew's backstories, I recall in the manga he didn't stay to listen to Nami's backstory.

Surprisingly he is one of the veteran actor at his age with 29 acting credits. Pretty wild too including Cocaine Bear. I think his biggest role is still being the lead in the multi season Sweet Tooth.

On your Luffy being strong. I feel like this is a deliberate action. To keep up with the powerscaling pace of the anime will blow the budget out of the water. For ep 1 and 2, there is a scene of Luffy and the sea king that is missing on purpose. To say that this sea king is still a threat in this world. It also make some of the "stronger" characters still menacing with the available tools that they have like said Mihawk, Garp, and others. I think all characters are weaker than their manga counterpart with the exception of Nami. And Luffy will remain way weaker than his counter part for many seasons to come. Until Enies Lobby. I am looking at G5 in the current anime episode and I am like how are they even gonna do that in the live action. Chances are they won't. And or change it something easier. Even with Avenger End Game level of budget. They probably can't be as good.

I mentioned a scene latter in the map room in which Nami said a dialogues I didn't like. The live action don't trust their audiences as much and still do a lot of hand holding. And it does play to this version of Luffy. This version of Luffy's guts instance is not as strong as the manga Luffy. Nor is his understanding of the situation. And especially his emotional iq is less than that of Luffy. Removing scenes like he got Koby to punch him for example.

"One Piece Attacked By Woke Media For Not Being Political" is a youtube title. The rage merchant is at it again. It is funny too for the anti woke crowd to said this when it their fellow members that attack the crew early on for comment on twitters via. I see some of those vids are remove now. Especially they thought the show gonna fail. They did this to Shang Chi movie as well. They threw everything at the wall, sometimes they right about a movie suck, sometimes they wrong. But the problem is that they don't wait until the thing come out. They made very strong, very passionate opinions out of their *** months before something came out.

If you look up pictures in comparison. The arlong in the tv show is actually larger than the one in the trailer. They fixed it in post.

Yeah if you're gonna make the world, characters and overall tone more realistic, then obviously the strength of the characters needs to be more grounded as well, so I'm fine with the strength thing. Really sets apart someone like Mihawk, as you say, and allows for a bigger "climb" for our crew. I don't mind it. It's just interesting to have a One Piece where it Luffy's got two guys on his crew who it feels like are better fighters than he is.

I feel like a part of the reason is also because it's evidently hard for them to translate Luffy's fighting style into LA, probably need more work on the CGI for his abilities, ideally they should adapt a more brawly fighting style. In a lot of the scenes you can see Iniaki standing still waiting for an opportunity to strike, where as Zoro's and Sanji's fighting style is a lot more sequenced.

So finished the last episode. As good as the swordfights are (kuina vs. zoro was impressive), i dont like the washed down versions of luffys fights.

Also god damn. If they let Alvida be fat and still have the alabasterfruit i will lose my shit.(probably was to saving wages for actress, just imagine Gal Gadot as hot alvida)

Today is still young but boy if this keep up they just smashed their last record and be number one in 86 countries. This meant One Piece movies could do much better with American audiences now. I am seeing Demonslayer level of good since Film Red didn't do as good in the USA.

It isn't the end of the world, not something you should lose your shit over. Next season have Tashigi, Ms Valentine, Robin, Vivi, Ms doublefinger. Just so many characters. Alvida probably gonna appeared for like 1 episode next season. Not that big of a deal.

Edit: Logistically maybe a good move, no need to cast a new actress. It gonna attract the political crowd one way or another, but this is the lesser of two evils. Less distraction talk from the show. Also for new audience, more of a continuity. Since the whole Buggy's side story got remove. Alvida already lost her mystery component. Some already comment that they like recurring villains and that villains are not completely kill off (lol little do they know Oda had the opposite problem).

I don't see a world where I could lose my shit over anything concerning (manga/anime) Alvida. :lmao Honestly what the actress brought to the table was better than the character ever was in the original imo, so I wouldn't mind if she got to keep the role.

But I would also not be surprised nor disappointed if she doesn't reappear in the story at all. Just let her be the one-off first opponent I always wished she'd have stayed in the manga.

Can we consider the live action a success?
Yes, by the metric that it brought on new fans. I suspect many will be carry over for the manga/anime, that they never otherwise. Some will be Live action only. Which will justify this show existence. People are like why making something that will always be inferior. This is why. It is a gateway to some since the anime's style and length will gatekeep many. While other folks will now be a Live Action fans.

Reminded me of the four era of star wars (original, prequel, sequel, Disney plus). The prequel had so many detractors. And the sequel like the prequel was first very warmly recepted. Then it turned sour. But when kids grew up and enjoy them. Kids love prequel. And by the time of the sequel, people are now defending the prequel. Same with the sequel, the kids who grew up watching them will remembered fondly.

Manga fans before like to occasionally jabbed at anime only fans. And now we will have a certain portion that is Live Action only. Our black sheep of the family.

Dont give in guys. Netflix has had some shows with a great first season which got people hooked and then it fell of a cliff, because they were sure they couldnt get off the show. Witcher as example has just become more and more awful as the show did go on. (Ragnarok too, not record of ragnarok)

Alvida may seem a big deal now, but its the little things they start with and sooner or later it becomes a shitshow like cowboy bepop.

They have a good thing going right now, but dont give them the benefit of the doubt, when they are ever changing more sourcematerial.

The consenus from people who were hyping it up, is that it lives up to the hype.

It's being appreciated by people of all ages, who have never heard of One Piece before in their life. Pre-existing fans can now talk about One Piece with their elderly parents.

Tons of new people are picking up the manga and anime thanks to the new show.

And it's broken the record for countries it went #1 in, over Stranger Things and Wednesday.

It's even won over a LOT of the people who hated on it and were adamantly opposed to the idea beforehand. Like this butthead:

Oh feck no. Here I've been a strong opposer to the Cowboy Bebop live-action for as long as I can remember (since that's my #1 work of entertainment all categories). Still, compared to live-action One Piece, Cowboy Bebop seems like a great idea. That's how terrible I feel about this project. At least they could pull off something like a Cowboy Bebop-y vibe in live action. One Piece seems impossible. Like kkck said, these characters and settings, all the gags, everything works simply because of the cartoon aspect. And One Piece without its humor, given the "serious" treatment and, even worse, americanizing it... the thought makes me shudder.
I'd say that's a success in pretty much every sense.
