From what I’ve read, at least, they’ll be going for actors of the real-world nationalities/ethnicities Oda said he sees the characters as based on their appearance. I.e

Monkey D. Luffy: Brazilian Roronoa Zoro: Japanese Nami: Swedish Usopp: African Sanji: French

Tony Tony Chopper: Canadian Nico Robin: Russian Franky: American Brook: Austrian

I personally find inclusivity great in most cases and when it aligns with the wishes/vision of the original author then I really don’t see the problem.

If they do it like that. Sure do it. But i dont want a Robin with african descent, just because she had darker skin at one time. Or a japanese Usopp who wears a wig all the time. And i dont trust netflix with that at all.

They already butchered Triss on the witcherseries, so i reallyyyyy dont trust them. Especially with Robin.

For Zoro, i would love to see Daisuke Tsuji play him.. he was the voice and motion capture artist behind Jin Sakai's english version in Ghost of Tsushima.. furthermore, the japanese voice actor for Jin Sakai was the same person who voice's zoro in the anime... he would be fitting, but unfortunately hes 40.. they'll look for someone in their 20s...

I think in Robin's case, i wouldn't mind anyone play her. In fact, i really dont see Russians fit in, but the eyes have to be right, can't imagine south asian, middle eastern or african people there... but its more important they can pull off Robin's dark humor and her voice than skin...

I think diversity is importnat in a series like OP specially when you consider that every character in OP looks distinct or atleast have distinct background... Heck, let them play with their own accents as well..

Triss actress was ok to me, but i am not that invested in witcher so perhaps my opinion doesn't matter..

Dang, I honestly had no idea that oda had specific nationalities in mind when thinking of the main cast. Though luffy being brazilian and ussop being african is downright confusing. Nami being swedish is weird as well, though not as much as the others.

I think he was just asked in an SBS something along the lines of "If the Straw Hats where from the real world, which countries would they be from?" and he answered that, but I don't think he wanted them to look like any particular ethnicity when he designed their looks.

I still don't get how this boggles peoples minds. The simple fact that Luffy is boy from an island that has coconut trees and jungle and tigers implicates that when turned into life-action, it is highly likely he is something other than caucasian or japanese. The designs of One Piece characters are very varying and really out there, and even the weirdest of weirdos have their places in their societies - though some of them don't. Racism is one of the themes of OP, especially when it regards to fishmen. All that in mind, it only makes sense the casting is diverse and inclusive.

Ludi Lin has been rumored to be on their radar as Zoro. Best known as the Black Ranger in the 2017 Power Rangers reboot film, and Liu Kang in this years Mortal Kombat film. Seems like a potential match to me. He is bit older, early 30s, but people who play high schoolers in fiction almost always are closer to 30 than 20. Lin is canadian-chinese though, and I do hope they'd find someone of japanese heritage to play the samurai role.

Hah, I don't know her name but already thought earlier that the Stranger Things scoop lady could be a good fit. Now I googled and what did I find

Yeah, I like that. Year ago the rumor mill was all about Emily Rudd. I haven't seen any work by her, but looks-wise would work.

I heard Jamie Lee Curits is a fan of Chopper, so perhaps she should play Dr Kureha...

And i would love to see Mark Hamill play something, even if its a minor role like Gol D Roger..

Age-wise Mill is would be spot on, but I don't know. Might be just that I generally hated that film.

Curtis would be perfect Kureha! But I doubt Chopper coming in season 1. Probably ends at Arlong Park or Logue Town.

I'd also love Hamil, but can't think of a suitable role. I think he is a bit old for Roger.

You can see bits of "Zoro" training for his role in Kenshin here. I think he is gonna nail the action very least.

Also apparently he is the son of legendary Sonny Chiba, who passed last summer.

i like all of them... Luffy was always gonna be hard to pick cos no-one has a smile like him in real-life... but the kid looks promising

The only one that doesn't initially look like his counterpart is Sanji's actor. I'm actually surprised but I think visually they've got Luffy's actor right. All this is without seeing them in make up or acting, and I'm STILL skeptical about the whole thing but I'm trying to not be negative before seeing a finished product.

I think the buzzcut is a bit confusing on Sanjj. Google image search gave this older photo of the actor - make that blonde and it pretty good fit.

Casting is honestly looking alright. Don't know much about these people so can't say acting wise how they'll do but just the energy out of that little announcement clip felt... alright.

Still not any hopes for this being very good, but I'm glad the cast all seem excited about it.

At this point I'm more concerned about the art direction rather than the casting. I don't think that logo looks very good.
