I must be missing the arguement here.

Naruto focuses on Team 7.
One Piece focuses on Strawhats.

Extension:
Naruto focuses on Kohona
One Piece focuses on Pirates

There is nothing wrong with the focus of Naruto. It introduces a large world in which the main characters belong to a faction, and thus their friends, rivals and family also belong to the same faction. One Piece is similar if you break it down enough as I did above.

Naruto and One Piece may appear to have different "settings", however they are similar in many respects which is actually why they are successful. I am a major One Piece fan, and I won't say Naruto is even in my personal top 3, but it's easily in my top 10 and still has a very solid storyline.

The difference between Naruto and One Piece is target. One Piece is a manga of varied tones (from very light to midly dark) that mixes in various genres and themes which appeals to all ages. Naruto is a manga of fewer tones (from a ever so slightly light to very dark) which uses less themes and genres and appeals to a more targetted audience (albeit "large" audience).

They are both good, not equally obviously since I'm talking about it here in the One Piece forum. Just don't make me compare things to Bleach which doesn't even rate in my top 20 anymore....I haven't read more than 30 manga series yet either...
I got what you're saying...
Naruto is for sure a manga better than Bleach... but it stays far behind in my top.. (I've only read 6 manga's and Naruto is the 2nd worst (bleach is the 1st)

But now to the point:
Well saying that One Piece focuses on Pirates and Naruto focuses on Konoha looks like a Naruto fanboy argument (I know you aren't one:D)
Cause One Piece has as its main focus the SH, just like Naruto has the team 7 (right??)!
And has secondary focus, THE PIRATE WORLD.. Naruto to be on the same level of ... "Complexity" (bad spelled and not the exact word) should have as the secondary focus the Ninja World.. but Kishimoto only goves us 5 ninjas of the other countrys and 100 (hyperbole) of Konoha..
The other villages don't have doujutsos...

One Piece is Bigger it shows every thing as a thing.. and we will understand the OP world more than we understand ours in the end of the manga..
In Naruto we know nothing about the other villages.. we have 3 maps at moast.. we just knew of the exsistance of the Damyoh in the latest chapters... and instead of show us the present.. Kishimoto just shows us the past..

He made something like:
Plot---Past
Battles---present...

And that shows some incapacity of plot managing.. but kishi isn't half bad.. Oda is just too good...

(I just wanted to answer.. but I didn't want to drag this discussion :()

I think the major difference is kishi attempts to grow team 7 seperately but at the same time try to convey they are still a team, meanwhile each character has such a deep story the entire manga could be just about them. And oda is more masterful because he mixes deep story, great characters, comedy, drama, etc all into one great story just right.

I think it comes down to experience, Oda learned from the guy who wrote rurouni kenshin as a second, Kishi is still working on his first manga.

I think whatever kishi does next has the possibility to be even better.

I also wish manga artist's would do like D&D novels and write storys from each others settings, kishi writing a story in the one piece universe would be awesome, and vice versa for oda.

That is actually a really good question! If we go by his history, he is a nakama-killer, so that is a strike against him. I suppose in certain situations he would save his nakama... if only because he still needs them. If the situation was too difficult or if the nakama annoyed him too much, he'd probably say, 'tough luck'.
I disagree, BB never thought of the people in WB's crew as nakama. It was just useful to pretend to be in his crew while looking for his devil fruit. the people he is currently traveling with are his actual nakama. I don't think he is really that bad. So he caught Ace, so what? Ace was a pirate, he new the risks he was taking by becoming one. do you think that say Hawkeyes is evil? He catches pirates (well probably kills them) to. My impression of BB is a positive one so far, I think he is a decent dude.

1 - On chapter ZERO Shiryu was Impel Down boss (Magellan was vice)
2 - Shiki feet was clearly cut by a sword
ps: Besides Croc still has his weapon I DONT THINK marines allow Shiki to have any kind of sword/knife while in jail.

Did Shiryu help Shiki to escape?

BB "decent? BB will do anything and whatever it takes to achieve
his goals even as far as murdering Thatch.( pressumably if thatch was killed that is)What makes you think he trust his "nakama"...let alone Shiryu the homicidal maniac..They're just a bunch of pyschos..They just follow him cuz they know he's stronger than them and that they share simillar "philosophies" and ideals like bb

naruto is completely different from one piece
For one piece, the story is complex and there are so many mysteries left in the story
the story isn't even close to halfway over as the strawhat pirates didn't really make it to the new world yet

For naruto...almost every mystery that was present from the start has been basically revealed...kishi is simply making up new story lines so he can continue the series

its pretty obvious which manga has been better planned...Kishi didn't think naruto would be a long lasting manga therefore he made the story more compact with huge plot lines in the beginning to attract readers, but as the story progress's kishi has to make up new random storylines (bullshit) to continue the story.

Every decent author knows that he should leave mysterious background info and random facts to keep the reader guessing/debating...how the author plans the storyline and how he uses the mysteries in the story shows how skillful an artist/author is
Kishi simply didn't plan out naruto well enough compared to how Oda planned one piece

I mean, Kishi still planned the madara and akatski thing at the beginning. This sows some planning power in my sense. Maybe Oda just has the ability and the format, to draw the story out in a much longer way. But overall I share your pessimism, I would just add Bleach in there too(Guess this is a non-topic, srry).

its all personal preference. both stories are great, which takes tremendous amount of prep time. of course one piece is a bit more action packed at the moment. this the great battle that oda has been building up too. the 4th great ninja war is upon us, so im sure this where kishi will shine. no one can say that the pain invasion arc wasnt great.

dbz had a worst storyline than all the big 3, but nothing can compare to the 1st time a saw goku go super saiyan the 1st time. i still get goosebumps, and im anadult know.

like a said its all personall preference. we should all just sit back, buckle up, and enjoy this great ride these authors take us on. its off to work now:p

No, I mean, planning wise some exceed others. This doesn't change when all the 3 mangas are evenly great or great in an uncomparable way. The argument I make is that planning ability equals not grateness. I think the planning ability is possbile to measure from the past perspectives and from authors interviews. So you just have to compare the number of the plannings at the beginning ór something. I guess to compare the impact of a planning and it's major role for the whole series is more difficult, because those statements are value-laden.

if you want to measure it from interviews Oda sucks at planning, simply because he already stated a few times he's "halfway through" with the story and he can hardly keep any of his expected ending times, because he probably adds a pannel here and another one there and then the chapter is filled before he notices and the result is... arcs like water 7 and thriller bark, which are longer than he originally 'planned' but nonetheless a good read

Oda liek stated before by Akainu Oda sucks at planning and therefore a great writer because he keeps writting and so he writes more then he expected and its just exciting because he starts with something and he just keeps going on and on

Kishi is problably more structured and stuff because he planned the whole story yet Oda didn't he just planned the end and the +- story not any details and how luffy is going to do that stuff he just draws and see whats coming from his imagination
Naruto is more structured and there fore less exciting and kishi probably already planned day one the whole details and storyline Oda didn't and now Kishi has problems too keep on going Oda doesn't because he is just a genius that lets his spirit write

Or is it the opposite that the manga has a relevance in the movie? I hope I understand you correctly here, but usopp met the beetle guy in the manga and after that the revelation in the movie was made? Mm, or was the hat shown already before the cover story? I mean I do not understand how the movie can have influence on the manga concerning Usopp's hat. Please do elaborate.

went even as far as murdering Thatch? Hah! Only the straw hat pirates don't actually kill anyone pretty much every other pirate crew kills, murders, and plunders. Like i pointed out before Hawkeyes has killed hundreds of people simply because it's his job. They are pirates! Killing people is part of the the job description. I mean even shanks kills people and I doubt you think he's to bad.

the movie can have influence on the manga because Oda himself is working on it. So it is a valid part of the story, or at least that is what I have been told

In this I have no doubts, but I mean if the beetle hat in the movie can have any implications for the manga?

I don't think so, the Identity of Dadan's not revealed yet, first, because I don't think that Garp will give Ace to a "random" pirate of Roger ... and second, because of this ...
I did not pay much attention to that. But that's right, in these panels there is Dadan running after Ace and that says to Garp : " Oh, Garp-san ! When did you come home ? "
But I don't understand how you can say with this page that Dadan cannot be that guy : at this time Roger's crew had already disbanded for more than a year (that doesn't mean I think he is Dadan).

Come on just look at his face, do you think he's the man to raise a baby or two kids :p

well, I said that because of the Relation Marine-Pirates (I know ... this is an exceptional case but Garp and that guy is so unlikely IMO, because if Garp wanted to trust Ace to someone from the Jolly Pirates, the first one in the list would be Rayleigh, and since the WG knows that the Jolly Roger Pirates are alive and free, I think if they do find a kid living with one of them they would suspect, and will use whatever means necessary to catch him and incriminate him)
Just my Opinion :amuse

The way I figure it, Garp would pick someone who is or was a Marine since he wanted Ace and Luffy to be marines. The person would be experienced and trusted by Garp, but they would have to have a lot of time on their hands to do the job. In other words not actively serving on a marine base or ship. Maybe even retired.

I also seem to remember a picture of Dadan where his face was hidden from some time ago. Can't remember when it was though. He was wearing a suit.

Kind of like these guys.
