I don't see how a Giant is an animal. It's just a different kind of human but definitely not animal.

There is probably a giant zoan since there was a human zoan.

But I don't count them as different, they're just bigger in size, their anatomy is the same. Where would you categorise Whitebeard for example ? A tiny giant or a huge human ?

They are a different race. Giants are giants, they aren't overgrown men. They have thier own island and their own culture.
But if it would make you feel better - human fruit, model giant.

Don't forget the Minotaurus fiasco in ID. In early pic's he looks like a menacing creature in the shadows... and then we saw what he really looked like in the light.

Cover arc story.

Funnily enough it doesn't bother me at all. I like a bit of unexplained mystery in my story. If Oda explains that, I'd also want him to explain how dinosaurs lived on an island still, how Sea Kings came to be, how did someone build Impel Down to reach all the way to the bottom of the ocean and keep it in the calm belt.

There are just some things that will never be explained. Still too early to truly say whether or not Oda will never explain that thing, especially since we've gotten no cover arcs concerning the Thriller Bark arc yet and the SH's are still in the first half of the grand line. But that said, I believe the probability that it will remain a mystery is high.

Kind of Oda's tribute to the Bermuda Triangle's continued mystery.

1: that was explained in the manga http://www.mangafox.com/manga/one_piece/v14/c115/17.html each Island is almost completely isolated from any other so they develop independently.

2: Kinda implied that evolution in and near the Grand line in wacked cause of the climate.

3: that just takes a little imagination
