No D is the taboo/hidden name, or so I understood. Given the reaction of Rocinante, it's the D that should be hidden.
Are you sure? Most translations I've read make this distinction between hidden and taboo except there's a mistranslation somewhere?

I don't see why Water would be taboo when D is the problem here. Also in this chapter he refers to his hidden name. It's prolly not that important anyway, the fact is both names had to be hidden for some reason.
I remember a translation saying that it was his mother's name. The naming for Law seems to be like the one most Spanish and Latin countries have, with the name of both parents featured. In this case, Water is his mother's family name, and Law is his father's name. Also this mirrors the whole theme of Law since Trafalgar is the name of a cape in Spain. The name comes from the Arabic Taraf al Gharb, literally "The west cape" which happens to describe the position of the cape, North West of Gibraltar. And you prolly noticed by now, but Water Law is close to Waterloo, so both his names are based on battles.
There might not be much to it, could be that his mother is like Scarlet or something, and they had to conceal their name.

I see where you're coming from, it's just the manga itself states Water for some reason is a Taboo name which is what I find to be odd. The D family name being an initial implies it's the first letter of this family's name and then we have the Ancient Kingdom's name which isn't allowed to be uttered as seen when the Oharan scholar was killed for attempting to mention it. I'm assuming the D initial and the Ancient Kingdom are possibly the same thing.

I've also gone back to check and noticed from past chapters that the Marines didn't know that Monkey D. Luffy (as published on his wanted poster), Garp and Dragon were related; this must mean the "Monkey D." part of Garp's and Dragon's names is kept secret as are other D initial barers from those who aren't of the upper echelon within the Navy/Marines.

If Law has a Taboo name as well as a hidden name, then I wonder if other Ds bare Taboo names too; if not, then Law is pretty special within the D lineage.

The taboo might not be common to all the Ds.We even had a D inside the Marines (Jaguar D Saul) and neither his family name nor his initial were hidden. I just think that some of the Marines are not very bright, and correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the Monkey D in Dragon not mentionned beforehand? He was known as Kakumei Dragon(Revolutionary Dragon). It was until Garp specifically told Luffy that his father's name in Monkey D Dragon that everyone made the connection between Garp,Dragon and Luffy. They simply lacked that information about Dragon's name, and who can blame either of them for distancing themselves from each other? Garp was still a Marine after all, and Dragon is openly opposing the WG, so it wouldn't look good for Garp that his son became a revolutionary. And the RA are known for discarding their past, and family as seen with Gaburu.
More importantly it's not like there's only one line of Monkeys, what if Garp had a brother or something? And in rl some family last names can be common, but they aren't directly related to each other. The D and more importantly the fact that there is a clan of D suggests they're all related one way or another. I agree that given the context of the Ds being God's natural enemy, they might be related to the Ancient Kingdom. As for Water which again is his mother's name which may or may not be a D, it can be taboo for different reasons, that might not be related to the D. In fact he was about to explain why his family hid that name, but he was interrupted by Baby 5 and Buffalo so we didn't get the full story.
There's a chance it might become relevant in the future.

When it comes to naming taboo, it's something that existed in China, but also Japan, and these days it has more to do with the Emperor himself. I could see something like that applying here, and yes it could just be Law who has a taboo name. In which case it's not related to the D clan and the Ancient Kingdom, but his own family on his mother's side most likely.

Fair point there, and I agree with the Taboo naming as rare. Regarding the Monkey D. family, it does seem they tried to keep it as disclosed for as long as possible, but Luffy being reckless and ignorant blew that cover.

Smoker himself never drew the link between Luffy and Dragon until Marineford and he only attributed this to his act of saving Luffy, and didn't even draw the link by name. Sengoku seemed to be sly too, he referred to Ace's biological dad as "Gold" when he of all people would know it's "Gol D.". Also, no one drew links between Luffy and Garp or Garp and Dragon at Marineford and only Sengoku understood why Luffy could have taken Garp down, so in a sense it's still pretty much a secret in as much as it can be.

The only thing I'm not too confident on is Jaguar D., we don't know if he just went by Saul, but he claimed any research towards the Void Century so I'd assume not many people knew his family name, but I can't say so with certainty. Shame we can't have 2 chapters per week, so much information needed, lol.

The water in his name might be an exclusive name for Flevance and since Flevance people are hunted...
Good point. Since he even mention generations, that's what it seems to be pointing at.

I actually am interested in seeing the history of certain Marine soldiers like the fleet admiral/s, admirals, and some vice admirals. Especially the ones that are strict and believe in supreme justice like Akainu and this guy. What made them like that? What did they see that made them merciless? Just what horrors did Fujitora experience to make him do what he did to himself? What happened to Aokiji and how was he saved by Garp, and why does he believe in his kind of justice, where he spared Robin on more than one occasion?

Now I'm Interested too . It'd be cool if Oda would draw a small "special" Marine chapter of One Piece explaining what turn these marines/World Government agents into strict , cold blooded , absolute justice hound dogs . Could it just be the way they grew up or could it be something more "sinister" ? Either way noway in hell they should be killing their underlings like their lives means nothing less then wingless flies .

Would "small" be enough to cover what led them to believe in what they do and their experience?

Well, there's some hints, we know Zephyr used to be an instructor and he's pretty hardcore too but Aokiji/Kizaru used to be his students and yet they didn't turn like him

I guess personal experiences + Zephyr's teachings

Well I mean one page for each Marine would be considered small . Especially if it's only like 7-8 Marines being covered in the special chapter .

Second promotional poster for the One Piece Kabuki theater. The illustration is of course done by Oda.

The first poster featured the SHs.

This makes me really want to see Oda do a manga in the Edo period for example.:D

That wouldn't be enough, tbh. Given the likes of Fujitora and Aokiji, I'd expect to see at least half a chapter per.
