I've just checked the Japanese raw of the chapter 780. Law surely literally said "Go lick the ass of all of the citizens".
It's not an ordinary Japanese expression, but I don't think it's a figurative use either?
Dofla's crimes deserves such a punishment as he licks the ass of all citizens. It was Law's utmost expression to insult Doflamingo.

Yeah, great :zomg , but you know, I have nothing to do with Mangastream, I'm not their spokesperson, I'm just defending my view about literal translation. ;)

Oh don't waste your time stating me "this" and "this", you know.... I'm a translator, and linguistics was my subject area, so ... :)
I respect everyone's work even if I disagree, but I know very well what's wrong in many translations (including mine).
Because I'm too lazy (gomen :p ) and because of my broken English, I'll spare you my long and boring explanations, but unstead I'm quoting someone else to clarify and sum-up what I meant earlier regarding context, polysemy, implicit and rephrasing in T-language, & so on. :

So, Where does it go Wrong?

Essentially, it's going wrong with enthusiast manga translators not translating from Japanese to English. Allow me to explain.
It is relatively easy to translate words. If we don't know how to translate certain words, we rely on dictionaries or native speakers to help us find alternative meanings that we might use in order to translate them within the setting of a sentence, and we'll typically end up with a coherent sentence.
But the story in a manga isn't composed of individual sentences. No running text is. Instead, it consists of sentences linked by what is known as discourse, and translating is about preserving discourse. You cannot translate any other way without doing a bad job at translating.
"Discourse" is the collection of underlying thoughts and intentions that motivated someome to write a text in the first place. Discourse is what makes a collection of sentences feel like "a text", instead of loose sentences. Put concisely, discourse is what an author "wanted to say", rather than what the words that he or she used say. Crucially, it is the presence or absence of identifiable discourse that determines whether or not a translator did a good job, or simply isn't a translator.
And here we hit a snag.

So Where do Translations go Wrong?
Actually, in many places. There are a number of things that a translator has to keep in mind, and try to avoid at all cost:

  • Idiomatic constructions should not be translated literally
  • Sentences should not be translated "per bubble", since the bubbles work for how Japanese sentences are chopped up, not how English sentences are chopped up.
  • Words that are already entailed by translated words in a sentence should be left out.
  • Verb mood, tense and even polarity may need to be changed to express the same grammatical construction.

Japanese and English are two different languages. This sounds elementary, but all too often people do not seem to realise this when they translate every word in a Japanese sentence and consider the translation done, even though this leaves the English translation with too many words; a sentence such as "even if by doing so we succeed, it will become difficult" is not an unsual sentence in a translated manga, even if it's not an English sentence at all.
This might sound weird to some people. Even if you don't read Edited Mangas at all, you might be wondering how that statement could be true - after all, it uses English words, and you can figure out what it means.

However -- and this is a big however -- proper English does not need "figuring out". Real, natural English sentences are understood exactly because they are natural language. They don't have to be figured out before you know what they mean, because the way the words are arranged immediately reveals how you should interpret them. Arranging them differently, because the original phrase was not in English, just makes for unnatural and potentially highly convoluted sentences; the entire book "Everything is Illuminated" by Jonathan Safran Foer (2002) used the idea of writing out a non-English speaker's thoughts and sayings using English words and it was a mind-splitting pain to read.
What's in it for Me?
I can understand you may read this and wondered why it would be worth to analyse every sentence in this way, when the meaning is sort of there in the original sentence, but the point is not that you - as a reader - can figure it out, the point concerns translators - my problem is with translators who don't bother to learn how to translate. A proper translator learns to think about translations by analysing what he or she produces:
Is what I translated English, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?

  • [*]Did I put in words that are already entailed by others, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?

[*] Did I leave off words that are required by idiomatic expressions, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?

[*] Are my words in the right order, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?

[*] Should I use a pronoun, or should I use actual nouns for contextual omissions, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?

[*] Am I using verb mood, tense and polarity correctly in English, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?

[*] Does this sentence link up to the previous sentence, or are they unconnected, if I ignore what the Japanese line reads?
[...]
In Conclusion
Translation is an art. You can do it just for fun, or you can do it to make a living, but either do it right or don't do it for an audience.

Also, for more accurate translations, you can always check those posted here in the forum by independent translators. Just go to the translators' section, you can filter the list of translators by manga. By here: https://mangahelpers.com/translators/ :^_^

In case you're interested, Cnet has translated that conversation between Law and Doflamingo in these terms:

Flashback!Law: Anything...?! If you truly mean that, this does sound like a fine idea. / Worthwhile for both of us... / *pant* // ......All right... You’ve got yourself a deal......!! / *pant*
Flashback!Doflamingo: !!
Flashback!Trebol: Behhehheh!! He’s a pragmatic one, nyehhh~~~!!! // Is Dofi going to get his eternal life~~~?!
Flashback!Law: Bring Cora-san back to life, right here and now......!! / Then go and lick the boots of every citizen of this kingdom.
Flashback!Doflamingo: !!!

Can we stop with this talk about translations? The fact is there isn't only one group who translates One Piece, and if Mangastream isn't good enough for some then there's plenty of other sources we can read from. There's batoto, Aohige's summaries, cnet translation etc. I encourage everyone to check out other sources that we might not always post on the site because they come much later than mangapanda's or Mangastream's.Also if anyone feels like complaining about the quality of these releases they're more than free to do it on their site, we do not in any way represent them.

Sooooo since there is not too much to talk about right now, i have to ask:

Has anyone here have checked out my Rokushiki Robin project before? I tried to avoid asking this in this thread because i thought this isn't the right place to do so but i'm very curious at the moment.

I did a while back out of curiosity. I like Robin, her DF is one of the most interesting ones in the manga, if she could use rokushiki or haki she would easily be one of the top fighters in the SHs crew. Sadly Oda hasn't given her a chance to shine for god knows how many chapters, I was hoping she could fight an executive or just an officer on her own, but nope. It seems Oda doesn't want the girls to fight seriously, so I'm kinda afraid that BM will turn out to be a disappointment. Maybe that's why he decided to have Kidd and co take her out, possibly off panel.

Yeah, that's how i feel about her powers as well, plus now that Trebol is revealed to be a parmercia user, i think that would have made her fight with a very interesting one if Oda had given her a damn chance but that's gonna happen now. :(

Anyway, i'm glad that you liked the project. I remember a couple of years ago when i had plenty of people talk come visit the thread dedicated to the project and chat to me about it since the topic of the rokushiki + Hana hana fruit concept was quite a hot topic back then but now it's been pretty quiet in that thread now and days. Boy do i wish could revive those times. :(

But hey, as long as there are still people here who like the project, i'm happy! ^_^

Now as for haki, do you know how awesome it would be if she used ojos fleur with at least a decent level of CoO haki? I'd say it would almost be like how Enel was able to use CoO haki with his lighting logia powers to cover all of Skypiea. :)

You know out of the SHs she could be the one who benefits the most from awakening to Haki. Maybe not Armament Haki, but definitely the Observation one. In this arc we saw Usopp awaken to it, so maybe something similar could happen with the rest of the SHs. Tbh my biggest problem with this arc is the fact that the SHs are scattered, and some of them didn't get to face the villains. Robin's role ended up being to protect Rebecca. But then again after seeing how poorly the executives performed, I would say that they are below the SHs, they're not that big of a threat and Robin could have easily taken out Diamante for example.
Now for the next arcs I'd like to see her play a bigger role, same for Franky. Usopp could definitely be more effective now that he has Haki, so I hope we could see the rest of the SHs develop their abilities as well.

That's a bit old though. It was done when naruto ended which was late last year. Not only that naruto is sitting there, the 'O' in one piece symbol is Konoha's headband symbol, Nami's dress is patterned with Akatsuki symbol among other naruto related things. It was like a send-off.

Kishimoto also put a OP-related symbol in his final chapter.

Now serious, we know from the Den Den Mushi he used to communicate with Disco that he does not have bulging eyes. =P

Another theory is that Doflamingo was born blind from the left eye, since his crossed Jolly Roger looks like a face with an eyepatch. His father hide it from the other Tenryuubito because gods don't have such medical conditions.

I think it was mentioned that Doffy's got the same 1000 yard stare as Law when he was younger.
The glasses and his smiling, light-hearted demeanor might just serve as a fascade for the otherwise broken man beneath it. I wudn't put all that much emphasis on his glasses tho, I don't think he's got anything particular to hide (aka this ain't Naruto).

I think this one is the best I found so far. For some reason I always pictured Doflamingo having eyes/a look similar to Zoro.

Yeah, I don't think DD's eye has any power hidden in them. Maybe it got injured when people attacked when he was young because he is a celestial dragon.

If everyone is bored and have a smartphone why don't you play the one piece game? One piece treasure cruise. Best way to waste time until the chapter comes out.

Not expecting DD to have anything special in his eyes. It's either he is just used to wearing them or has a scar or abnormality that he doesn't want to show or maybe the reason is something silly and tenryubito related like those on SA using air bubbles so they don't breathe the air others do.

Or maybe just for fashion... We've got plenty of characters who wear shades all the time, don't get the obssession with DD's eyes tbh

Hogback, Mr 5, Brannew, Vergo, Kuma etc

Or it could be a pair of rinnegans.

Would be a nice counter to G4 :derp

Somewhat back on-topic; I realized the other day that we haven't seen Sanji & Co. since chapter 730, 12/03/2013.
That's a really long time.

Do you think the same could happen to any other SH in the near future? Could you imagine going a year or more without any of the SHs currently in Dressrosa?

I doubt he'd separate them like this again (and I mean all the SHs not anyone in particular). It's possible they might be forced to split up at some point, maybe if they have to attack a large crew or stronghold and decide one group goes from the front while the other comes in from the back or something but it'd wouldn't be something this long or too far away from each other and it'd be highly unlikely any one would be off-screen for this long again imo.

Next Chapter

Hi, I've heard the next chapter will be a double. Is this true? and will there be a delay in posting due to it's length? Thanks.
