So this must be the announcement, a new special featuring Sabo. Looks like it takes place in Dressrosa, before he reunited with Luffy .

Can someone explain me just what is that enormous BB crew's guy? Is he some kind of giant or more like Oz?? He doesn't really look like neither of them.

San Juan Wolf is a giant, a different one than we've been introduced to in the series but a giant all the same. Hopefully we'll get to know more about his heritage. It may be that he's just an anomaly even among giants. As Saul once said, there are more types of giants than those of Elbaf, so far the different giants we've met are the regular sized giants ( Elbaf giants, Saul, Marine HQ Giant Squad, etc), abnormally large demon looking giants ( Oars, Little Oars Jr), aaaand then there's Wolf.

Sabo's "death" was ambiguous enough to leave the possibility of him coming back, and if we think about it his reapperance was foreshadowed with the three cups back Ace's and WB's graves. So no it's not a retcon, a few lines in a data book aren't reliable, because it was most likely written by someone else other than Oda, an assistant most likely. It's virtually impossible that Oda wrote all those data books, and anything OP related really.He only oversees it, just like with the movies, and they're not canon either.
And as far as the canon is concerned, it should be always the manga,and things that are said by Oda himself in the SBS which is included in the volumes, not even the anime, because they're known for adding stuff. And in the manga it was not clear whether he was dead or not.That's why everytime a character remotely ressembling Sabo appeared, people would jump and say it's him.

I don't think Crocodile used awakening, when Doflamingo changed his surroundings to string it wasn't a technique; was just a passive effect of his powers and he didn't make contact with the ground or touch buildings to transform them.

Crocodile on the other hand had to make with the ground and use the technique "Ground Death" which is similar to Aokiji's "Ice Age" which requires contact or projection. Aokiji does what Doflamingo did with his awakening when he froze Doflamingo at Punk Hazard, the effect of his powers spread in an instant and froze everything within the perimeter like with Doflamingo's awakening.

Ace and Akainu also pull this feat at Marineford without invoking techniques.

Crocodile is actually the first who mentions the awakening, he's the one who recognized the ID guards as such. Ground death dries everything in contact with the ground, trees, even buildings, turning them into sand, which is something that is similar to what happened with DD in this chapter. Also there's one major difference between DD and Crocodile(2 actually but I'll come back to that) is that DD is a paramecia and Croc is a logia.
The Paramecia are always seen as weaker than the logia, due to the fact they can't dematerialize, but what if their awakening is stronger? It would be a good way to counter the inherent limits to their type, while the logias can still dematerialize. The second difference,and the most notable one, is that DD seems to be a better user than Crocodile, although the latter is also a good user who has mastered his fruit to the point that he can dematerialize at will. So it could just be that DD is more experienced overall, with the awakening.
I'm pretty sure the effects of the awakening are different, between the paramecias, logias, and Zoans. We don't have a lot of evidence right now to conclude anything really, but going back some things looked fishy, like Ground death, Aokiji's abilities etc.

Not worth a new thread I think, but I reread the beginning of the Marineford arc.
Could it be, after finding out the truth about the ancient history and realising that he has not much time left, that Roger intentionally searched for a female D. to bear his child?
Maybe so that the Haki is stronger or sth like that?

Nah, Gol didn't seem to be the type to force his children into something. He forced his child onto Garp, who surely would try to stop him from following into his father foot steps.

A nice article that deals with the issue of catching up to OP's story, which can be quite difficult.
Personally I watched the anime and read the manga simoultaneously in order to catch up, and I don't regret picking up OP again after watching the first season of the anime a long time ago

It's a nice guide to those who are trying to catch up with the series, particularly the anime and to be more focused on the story relating to the manga.

I like both manga and anime versions and I watch every episodes. Even if I miss many weeks of them, I would go back to where I have stopped and continue from there. It takes quite some time to get back but I guess one has to set priority among many others (manga and anime alike) and One Piece is always on the top list for me.
