But Frankys father was? Or Choppers or Luffys or Aces or Sabos? The only good father in the series was Newgate and he had an adopted family.
Fathers s an ongoing theme in One Piece, rather parenting is, much of the characters have some past with mothers or fathers, royalty is a big thing as well, so genealogy plays a big part in One Piece.

The only "black sheep" in the Donquixote family is Doffy...

This may be slightly off-topic, but does anyone else follow Area D?
I'm only asking because I've just caught up with the recent chapters uploaded today (about 8), and it's weird how it seems to be channeling One Piece, like:

- this new main character acting way too similar to Luffy (in my opinion)

- a guy that can now "harden" his skin, etc.

Thought it was kind of weird and out of place, but eh, maybe it's to be expected considering the story and its mythos, if you could even call it that.

Oh...
Also Shingeki No Kyojin:

Anyone else see the similarities or is it just me :facepalm?
For anyone who's followed this series since the beginning, it just felt - again, to me - like a sudden rush to profit on stuff that have big fan bases, such as OP and SnK, and maybe lure them with it.

Again, not looking to start a "conversation" with this, just asking if you see said similarities I mentioned, and whether or not it bothers you.

if this is the wrong place for this, sorry, feel free to remove it :derp
also, I decided against putting up the pics because this is a OP thread, and also it's not like I want people to think I'm just publicizing another series on here x). On that note, I'm also not advertising for any website in particular, the one I linked is the one I usually use on a daily basis, so fear not, doubt not my intentions!

Might be the case, especially in that panel that is reminiscent of SnK.
In the past there were cases of manga authors plagiarizing other titles, like one that plagiarized Slam Dunk, up to copying the panels. And in OP's case the most famous instance is Fairy tail
Although in Shanks and Gildarts' case it could be that both titles copied from each other. Gildarts was inspired by Shanks originally but later on when Shanks appears at Marineford his hair is slicked back (but not entirely) like Gildarts. It could be a homage of some sort.
I don't read Fairy tail so I don't know when those characters appeared with this ressemblance to OP characters, but I think it happened after for most cases.

So, authors should avoid making clothes with feathers, leopard man and showing characters with snakes so that they can't be called as copying from others ?
Protip : Oda copied Kishi when it comes to Hancock, since you know there's Orochimaru who likes snakes too

No but when it is so obvious, up to the same stances it can be a problem. Plus we're just pointing out these ressemblances, not accusing anyone, for all we know it could be an homage, which some authors welcome. For example when Naruto ended both Kishi and Oda did an homage to one another.
No need to get on the defensive.

No there isn't a shitload of series about rubbermen :XD But I get what you're saying. If we consider it even titles like Berserk has the main two characters' appearance "copied" from Fist of the North Star, and Rose of Versailles. It's even done as a tribute, so even if there are copies, the motivation can be good sometimes.
Dunno about Area D but it could just be that the author is a fan of OP and SnK, and this was his way of showing it.

I guess it could be that, but from what I had seen previously it seems like a drastic change.
Oh and by the way, I knew I had seen something else in those chapters that made me think of OP, and I had to see your Fairy Tail/OP comparison to remember; this girl right here, a "warden" of some sort, totally reminded me of Magellan (he was horned and such, now look at her teeth):

Zehahaha, as ladylola said, it's not about the approach, but more or less on how it's done. To me, it didn't feel like a tribute or anything of the sort, more like an author trying to capitalize on something that he knows that works. I don't know, those last chapters in particular seemed really heavy on OP, SnK imagery, and even zombies.

It's as if the author is trying to elevate his work as much as possible. Maybe he's aiming for an anime adaptation or something? Bah, just wanted to share and rant a bit :).

Well this is not really something that should be discussed here, just know that some authors(most actually) can get inspired in many ways of other titles they've read in their childhood. The case can be made for some of the most successful authors like Toriyama, without DB there prolly won't be any OP, or any title that might have been inspired by it. And in a way it's a continuity, each successful title spawns other titles that are inspired by it one way or another that in turn become successful. The themes can be repetitive as well, because the market is kinda saturated and imagination has its limits. So reusing some elements from other titles is bound to happen, and some obvious things like Luffy's smile can be seen as a little reference to the series, and it's not necessarily to try to capitalize on things, sometimes it can just be a tribute to the series.

Oh, it just like Metallica who inspired Slayer and Slayer who inspired Metallica while both of them — and other bands at this time — were inspired by Iron Maiden, Venom and Punk Hardcore style. Both bands are great, I don't see the problem. In fact, I see the problem, the fans, who try to know which band is better than the other. It's saddening.

Hiro Mashima has always assumed that he was inspired by One Piece for Fairy Tail. His winks are pretty big and gross, like he just draw the same characters as Oda. That being said, I understand why people bitch about him when I see that.

In the Area D case, the problem is that Shingeki no Kyojin and One Piece are very popular and are still serialized, thus too recent.

Tokyo Ghoul is inspired by Parasite, but nobody bitched about that. And T1000 from Terminator 2 is inspired by Parasite, nobody bitched about that neither.
Cobra and Hokuto no Ken inspired Berserk, Claymore, and other stuff. The list is long.

But Oda plagiarized Pokémon for Chopper and other Zoan. Nobody spit on Oda for that...

the fact that they both have one arm seals the fucking deal, at least try to differentiate a little a

[edit]holy crap i was right, but yeah, they look EXACTLY the same, and some of the character designs are dead on similar, NOOOOOWWWWWW, is there a bounty thread that i can get crazy on?

Re: One Piece Chapter 792 Discussion / 793 Prediction

You are thinking of it too narrowly buddy. Fujitora is very smart. For one, Fujitoras hands were a bit tied because of DDs connections to the heavenly dragons. DD basically has them and the WG by the balls and probably had a contingency plan in place for if the WG made a move against him to silence him. The contingency would reveal to the world everything the WG and dragons have been trying to keep secret. It made him virtually untouchable by the WG.

And what someone said on the last page or 2, Fujitora has a plan to abolish the warlord system. This has all been part of his plan. He needed everything DD has been doing to be released to the world. But first he needed DD to be defeated otherwise CP0 will just step in and change it. He couldn't do it himself or allow the marines to do it because that would be like saying there isn't anything wrong with the system and nothing would change. He couldn't let another warlord do it because the warlord system would be working. He couldn't let the RA do it because that would be admitting that the RA was better than the WG. He needed someone strong enough to do it. Choices were limited.

Now he has said to the world that the Warlord system isn't working and that the WG was wrong in being so blind. Now he has paved the way for change to happen. Whether or not it does would be another question.[...]

Thank you.
I don't see how some fail to see/understand this, and claim that Fujitora was totally useless and garbage along the arc.

I saw some posts mentioning Green Bull, and the likelihood of Fujitora being known in Wano Country. I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with this already, but allow me to share some thoughts on where the story should be taking us.

First of all, I think it's very possible that Fujitora comes from Wano, or at least he's known to some folks there. His appearance - and the actor that inspired him, as with previous admirals - is based on Shintaro Katsu, known for his role in multiple films as Zatoichi, the blind swordsman.

So that's one thing.

Also, we can all agree that there's a subplot going on involving Momonosuke, right? Starting with his DF, the Doflamingo hallucination that he had, and the interest that Doflamingo - and also, very likely, Kaido - has in him, problably something related to a bigger plot involving the Smiles and Kaido's army. Right?

With that in mind, if you've read about Green Bull/Ryokugyu you've surely come across this particular bit:

Fujitora and Ryokugyu's animal aliases (tiger and bull respectively) are the representations of the northeastern quarter where the ogre that Momotarō must kill lives.
- from the OP Wikia

If you take a quick a the article "Momotaro" article on Wiki, I think we can safely assume that Momonosuke represents this boy, and the "ogre" that he has to kill must be Kaido.
Another particularly interesting bit is this one (about the story):

[...]Years later, Momotarō left his parents to fight a band of marauding oni (demons or ogres) on a distant island. En route, Momotarō met and befriended a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant, who agreed to help him in his quest.
And as we know, those animals correspond to the nicknames of Akainu, Kizaru and Kuzan.

So where do we go from here?

Well, we also know this:

This drawing was included in volume 70 and depicts Mifune Toshiro, probably the most renown Japanese actor. His collaborations with Kurosawa Akira are his most famous movies, including Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo The Hidden Fortress and The Bad Sleep Well, except the Samurai Trilogy. Considering that all the Admirals´appearance and, to a certain extent, their personality is based on famous actors in their most popular role, this drawing is somewhat interesting. It is also peculiar that Oda drew Mifune with horns and now introduced a character named Ryokugyuu (Green Bull).
Another interesting fact is that there is a movie in the Zatoichi series called "Zatoichi meets Yojimbo" in which both Shintaro Katsu (Zatoichi) and Mifune (Yojimbo) play side by side. In the movie, Zatoichi is hired by a rich merchant while Yojimbo is hired by the son of said merchant. Considering that Fujitora and Ryokugyuu were both conscripted by the Marines, it could be a parallel, at least somewhat. Furthermore, one of the gang leaders Yojimbo tricks in the 1961 movie is called Ushitora, which consists of ox/bull and tiger.

If we're to take into account all these themes and possible connections, I think it's very likely that the story could head into that territory, with Zou serving maybe as a transitional, smaller arc, before Wano Country.

I know this stuff is quite old, but does anyone think the story could go that route? I for one like to be surprised and would like if things didn't take such an "obvious" turn:P.

Thanks for sharing.
Indeed the Admirals and their nicknames are inspired from Momotaro's story, and Momo is present in both his name and Momonosuke's, which btw means Peach (Momotaro is literally Peach boy).
He encounters a dog, a monkey and a pheasant that he befriends. And later on he has to face a Tiger and a Bull.
And concerning the appearances of the Admirals, they're all based on Japanese actors. In fact the actor that served as inspiration for Akainu recently died.

So it's not far fetched to think it would be the case for Ryokugyu.

D: Alot of this stuff has been discussed before, but it's good to have a refresher for those who haven't seen it.

There is another special and interesting thing to mention, but I'll let the SBS handle the explaination.

You know how there was a question in SBS Volume 75 about the admiral candidates?? Well I just figured out the reason behind your final choice of the "Ox" and the "Tiger" so here it is...

Hitsujisaru [未申 (坤) - literally "Sheep Monkey"] → Momotaro

Ushitora [丑寅 (艮) - literally "Ox Tiger"] → Kimon [鬼門 - literally "Demon Gate"] → Oni [鬼] (Tiger loincloth, Ox horn)

And the "Oni" in this case would be representing the pirates.

Could the two new admirals "Ryokugyu" and "Fujitora" possibly have been created with the concept that, despite them being people of the Marines, deep down inside they are both Admirals who secretly harbor ill feelings towards the World Government (going against the WG → kind of like pirates?) as can be seen with Fujitora's wish to completely abolish the "Shichibukai" system set up by the World Government? P.N. Tosaka Kouhai

(Translator's Note: The epithets of the first three admirals [Kizaru- literally Yellow Monkey, Akainu- literally Red Dog, and Aokiji- Literally Blue Pheasant] come from the Japanese Legend of Momotaro, where Momotaro befriends a Monkey, Dog, and Pheasant on his journey to defeat an evil Oni in a distant island. This tale is actually based off of Onmyodo [derived from the more commonly known Feng-Shui, a traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology, in which the Ox and the Tiger, aka Ushitora, are the two zodiacs positioned in the Northeastern direction of the Onmyodo diagram and considered to be evil or unlucky. In Momotaro, the Tiger and Ox are represented by the evil Oni.)

O: What? Me, becoming restless? (cold sweat) W-w-what are you talking about? Of course not.

Uhhh, well that was one heck of a complicated theory written on this piece of paper. If you want to, go ahead and try to process it. I haven't said a single thing about whether this theory is correct of incorrect, okay! (cold sweat) Just saying. I j-just happened to throw this postcard in, so that I could show my fans the kinds of questions I've been getting and s-stuff

Lol so that kinda confirms it. So far it seems that Fujitora is more like Aokiji who left the Marines, prolly because he didn't agree with Akainu's vision. The fight between them in PH wasn't just a fight to know who will become Fleet Admiral, it's also an ideological fight between a more lenient justice (Aokiji) and Absolute justice (Akainu obviously). It's worth noting that Sengoku supported Aokiji and not Akainu, which means that his didn't support Akainu's absolute justice or not entirely.
In Fujitora's case he seems to be more like Aokiji, but based on his interaction with Akainu they might be on the same page when it comes to the Shichibukai at least.
So even if it turned out that Ryokugyu ended up being on the side of absolute justice, there's at least Fujitora who seems to be willing to make some changes in the Marines.Actually I wouldn't mind if he supported absolute justice, to balance things a bit between him and Fujitora.
The draft is also a mystery, the only thing that seems to be sure is that both Fujitora and Ryokugyu are supposed to be monsters in terms of power, and this also echoes the Momotaro story where there's supposed to be Onis.
So far the side that wants to see change in the Marines is made of individuals like Fujitora, Smoker, Tashigi, Coby and maybe possibly even Ryokugyu. Akainu in the end might just want to get rid of the Shichibukai because deep down they're still pirates, that and they're not exactly cooperative.

Concerning the SBS it should be noted that Oda tone is often humourous, for example when he was asked why Sanji's eyebrows are curled, and some people don't see that and they take his word to the letter. It might be the case here.

His tone is often humorous, but he usually sprinkles hints about the main story in the SBS along with the jokes. Like, there was a question about what would happen when a human eats a Human Human fruit, and Oda answered that they become "enlightened". And, sure enough, we were introduced to Sengoku who ate a Human Human fruit and literally became a Buddah.

I see but the explanation with Sanji's eyebrows was so goofy, and yet it inspired this
It might be the case, but maybe it's just something quirky about the character, so people should try to differentiate when he's clearly joking and when he's not.

Eh, that person took Oda's answer a bit too seriously, lol. I find it strange they didn't include Diable Jambe in that theory, but I digress.

I understand what you are saying. I just think there is most likely some truth in the theory. From what I've seen though, Oda's joke answers are generally straight forward, but with this one, he goes out of his way to not confirm or de-confirm it.

Yeah that's what I was saying :XD
Well there's a few instances where the fans think of things that Oda himself hasn't thought about or give explanations that could be so accurate like one in the more recent SBS(can't currently remember what it was about).
But yeah there might be some hints here and there. Personally I see the SBS as a way to learn some information about the characters that Oda might not always have the time to explain in the manga, for example that Sugar and Monet are in fact sisters.
