Well that's mostly up to individual opinion. DD surely would have had more stamina but Luffy likely also would have had more time with Gear 4. It would be a question of if Luffy could defeat him in the time Gear 4 remains active which we really have no way of knowing.
That was my entire point, yes. I mean, there is no denying that DD was superior without Luffy using G4, so all it would come down to would be whether Luffy´s Haki runs out first or DD´s stamina but it´s not that important anyway. I just wanted to express that at this point of time, Oda has managed to introduce a new fighting style for Luffy that lets him take on the real big players in the OP world, assuming of course DD is one as well, without making Luffy already too strong at this point.

A thought occured to me yesterday, and I figured I could ask on here to see if someone has an answer to this, or something close to it.

The SHs were separated for 2 years. Does this mean they spent more time apart than together?

And, is there a way to know - roughly - how long:

- Luffy was alone with Zoro until Nami joined;
- Luffy/Zoro/Nami were together until Usopp joined;
- [...]
- SHs were together until Brook joined?

I think I've made it understandable x:

I know it's not exactly relevant, but I'd like to know if there's even an answer to this :P

The wikia says that the SHs appears in the world 2 years ago. We don't have a clear idea of how much time they spend sailing before they got separated, but I could be wrong.
http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/World_Timeline
And if we look at the ages of the characters they're only two years older than when they appeared. My estimation is that the SHs spend less than a year before they got separated.
So either way it is like you said, they spend more time alone than with each other.

Thanks, milady :)

I know it's not really relevant, and fortunately Oda doesn't have to rely on plot-devices that consist in referencing stuff that happened in the past, but I figured it could be interesting to know those numbers. Of course, it's not as if time holds any importance to Luffy - or the others, really - but still. For example, I liked that one bit where Franky, Robin and Chopper come to learn about Laboon; it's a normal moment (although it makes me teary-eyed every time), but it doesn't make the rest of the crew look "inadequate" for not being there at the time.

I guess in the end we're not given a very precise timeline because what matters is the present, the now, and how really strong the SHs bond is.

If I ever decide to re-read the manga from the start I'll be sure to pay attention to some of those things, maybe count all the instances they're shown sleeping x).

I would really recommend rereading it, and as quickly as possible would be better, since you see so many things that do not catch your eye the first time and you see things from a different perspective. Like i said in the other thread before, OP is really meant to be read arc-wise, the only exception might be East Blue saga since the arcs are pretty short but then again, you might even see the entire East Blue as one whole arc since it basically serves as a prelude to the actual story.

No problem :).
Yeah it would be great if Oda answered all those questions, maybe there's something about that in the SBS. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if it was only a few months, after all most of the fights/events take place in one day. And we don't have a clear idea about the distance between the numerous islands and how big the OP world is in general.
About the SH bond it's pretty strong, and even though we saw some of the characters join after key events like meeting Laboon, you can feel that the SHs trust each other, if not outright care for each other. In fact their whole relationship is based on trust, that they would all be able to care of themselves, even the weakest ones. They're not always on each others backs during fights etc. They also trust that Luffy will succeed in taking out the bad guy.
I highly recommand rereads, even if it's not the whole manga. Rereading some arcs, or just reading one arc in one go, is simply better than reading individual chapters every week. Personally I enjoyed the arcs that aren't that popular because I read them in one go.

Until the duel between Luffy and Usopp, you can actually guess how much time between each arc passed based on the depiction of the moon. It starts in the Kuro arc and reaches till chapter 334:

During the early chapters, it was possible to use the moon to create an estimated time span for Luffy's adventures, presuming the One Piece world's time span is equal to that of Earth's. In some cases, the phase of the moon even gave the chapter its title. Over time, however, this idea seemed to have been retired, and it is no longer possible to use the moon as a time scale.

Chapter 28 - waxing crescent (moon stage noted in chapter's title)
Chapter 95 - first quarter
Chapter 107 - waxing gibbous
Chapter 152 - full moon (moon stage noted in chapter's title)
Chapter 160 - waning gibbous (still nearly full)
Chapter 162 - waning gibbous
Chapter 213 - waning gibbous (heading onto half-moon)
Chapter 232 - half moon
Chapter 253 - half moon
Chapter 334 - half moon (heading to last quarter)

Well, we know from luffy's flashback that each of the brothers was supposed to set out to piracy on their 17th birthday. Which means the manga probably started on luffy's birthday. And oda said that luffy was 17 years old by the time he started training with rayleigh. Or oda said that was his last adventure as a 17 year old. Which means that the first part indeed happened in less than a year.

I've just found this article about how much is left for OP's ending: http://www.japantoday.com/category/entertainment/view/is-one-piece-end-in-sight-editor-reveals-final-arc-is-mapped-out

What do you think?
Yeah, i already know about this and i can only say, math is not their strength, neither the editor´s nor japantoday´s.
I can only advice you not to take it too seriously, these estimations have been coming up for several years now and they change everytime. At chapter 600, it was 50%, at the end of PH it was 60% iirc (which is at least somewhat consistent with the estimation before) and now it is supposed to be 80%?
I mean if Oda were the kind of guy who would rush the manga to finish earlier, i would say ok, but the guy just made the longest arc ever in OP with nearly 100 chapters. And right now, we still have all 4 Yonkou in play, a confirmed Vegapunk arc, at least a visit to Elbaf, the final fight before One Piece against the BB Pirates, a huge war after finding the One Piece and these are all things that are already sure to appear.

Agreed, and it will always be Oda's decision, unless OP does so bad in the ratings that he's forced to rush the ending. Which is not the case, if we just look at the latest manga rankings. To me Oda and a lot of authors, even if they had an idea or estimation about the ending and how to get there, would still have to come up with the details along the way. Because of that the story and the universe continues to expand, just look at this arc. Now all of a sudden there's so many characters from various factions, and you can bet they will have a role to play. We could also add the seventh shichibukai to that list, Flower country since Zoro showed some interest in it, and god knows how many other islands they will visit before they reach Raftel. So 70-80% is prolly not accurate.

Oda admitted he has always been dragging out the manga. Initially it was meant to end in five years (about 250 chapters), then he said that the manga was half-way done in Water Seven arc (so the manga would last a total of 700 chapters), but claimed the same thing again before the time-skip (so a total of 1,200 chapters). At least the later one makes sense since the first half of Grand Line is finished. :-_-

Apparently Oda has so many ideas, that he often doesn't have enough time to incorporate all of them. Unlike other authors who are clearly out of ideas, and yet continue to drag their work because the publisher asks them to, in order to milk the series, Oda has so many ideas that he can't really include them all, or the manga would never end.
Besides I don't understand why people are so eager to see it end. It's not like the author is too old, or bad at what he does. And frankly when we see how Naruto fans for example simply are forced to look for other mangas to follow because the author decided to put an end to his series, I think it's way better to have OP around for a little longer. Because currently only a few shonen titles are worth reading, so between that and seeing the series end now, I'd rather it continued another 10 years.

Hm, I wouldn't even trust Oda's own predictions. Though I think that the story gets harder to draw out the farther it advances (since after beating the first Yonkou, how many worthy enemies will still be around for Luffy apart from the other 3?), it still feels like a long way until the end.
It's good to know that there will still be something left to read, even years in the future. :D

I cant imagine the end of one piece. For me its like the end of the world LOL. But the "pre new world story arcs" where 6 story arcs with a total of 16 years of publication. And now the new world saga it have been for almost 5 years with 2 story arcs. So we have 10 more years of one piece :). Maybe less perhaps 8 i dont know.

Some apparently there is a countdown to the reunion on the official channel...

http://avex.jp/onepiece/

Read it here:
http://mangapanda.info/one-piece-official-site-teases-announcement-with-timer-silhouettes/
Thanks for sharing these.
This is peculiar. Is it me or are some of the silhouettes not really matching those of the SHs? In particular the bottom row, on the left? The one with the hat looks like Mihawk's.
This might not have something with the manga, since it's on the site for the anime.
