Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

LOL at people saying Mihawk is YC1 and/or Admiral level at most... What are you even thinking, gosh?!

People who say "everything in the story points at Mihawk being weaker than Yonkos/Admirals". Same. That's so untrue.

But I won't bother elaborating. People don't want to listen.
On the OP threads these past few years there seems to be a number of people who for whatever reason hate Zoro, so by default they will hate Mihawk, they will refuse to accept the fact Mihawk is the WSS and will come up with ridiculous statements to help them sleep better at night.

Anyway i also hate the fact Oda introduced such a wonderful character whose sole purpose in the story is just a place holder for someone like Zoro :no

Shanks is stronger than Mihawk AND Kaido is stronger than Mihawk. No topic being changed, they don't conflict at all.
I think Shanks is stronger than both. Just my feeling, he's the strongest individual Yonko, although BB will defeat him.

Why is admiral level a bad thing? The admirals are basically at Yonko level, are they not? Akainu is treated as someone on the same level at the very least. So I'm struggling with why you consider that laughable. How high up should he be placed lol????

For now, I'd say between Yonkou Commander and Yonkou. He can beat commanders, but likely not the Emperors or Admirals apart from Fuji and Kizaru, probably.
I think Fujitora is slept on majorly. Dude can bring meteors down!

Right now Jinbe, in the near future Zoro. Jinbe likely doesn't have much more growth, whereas Zoro and Sanji, both 21 years old, are growing every arc and are probably not far away from him already. But I still think there's a gap right now.

When did Admiral level become a bad thing?

You know for a FACT that Mihawk hasn't done a single thing to put him at Yonko level, or even Admiral. But based on hype , he definitely is.

Nothing bad about being around admiral level. Especially if it's one of the stronger admirals. Cuz admirals are obviously not all equally powerful.

But people tend to say it like there's absolutely no way someone like Mihawk could be on that level. Like it's the last thing Oda would ever want to confirm.

I would put admirals/yonkou (current gen) in this order:

- Kaido
- Big Mom
- Akainu (I believe he got stronger now after 2 year timeskip)
- Shanks/BB
- Kizaru/Aokiji
- Fujitora

Where Mihawk would be above Shanks and BB. Later down the line BB will get stronger than Mihawk, obviously. But all in all the gap between each place isn't that big.

Stronger swordsmen and especially the world's strongest swordsman can easily adjust their energy/haki/swordsmanship depending on the person they're fighting.

Mihawk vs Daz Bones — first slash was stopped by Daz Bones. Next moment he is cut by Mihawk.

Mihawk vs WB. The slash was interrupted by Jozu. Who has a DF power that makes one's flesh like diamond, so it is ESPECIALLY hard to cut.

To say that Mihawk is definitely below Mihawk because of the fact is weird. Applying the very same logic would we say Mihawk isn't admiral level or above because he was briefly stopped by Daz Bones?

Or would we say Fujitora isn't as strong as he is because of how Zoro pushed him back?

Being admiral level at most doesn't sound as cool as being a confident admiral level, wouldn't you agree?

Never once used a single named attack. Casually (ca-su-a-lly) cut huge walls of ice. The only person alive (that we know of) to wield a black blade that he himself turned black. Was never injured.

That's so YC1 level, yeah. Like every other YC1 level character can pull off these feats, yeah, sure.

I think you people are blind to the fact that Oda just can't reveal everything at once. Why on Earth would he go out of his way to please your impatience and show you the full spectre of Mihawk's power? There's time for that.

What amazing skills did Shanks show for you people to say he is exactly this strong?

Shanks clashed with WB. Stopped Akainu for a brief moment there. Ok, so going by feats alone he must be around pre-timeskip Akainu level? At most lol.

Yeah, I can't in any way put Mihawk above 2 Yonko. I just can't see it. They dueled equally until they stopped because of Shanks lost arm. Then years later Shanks became a Yonko powerful enough to clash with WB on his own ship, while Mihawk felt that he had to attack him from very far.

I think Admiral and Yonko mean something for strength. I don't think Mihawk is far below that, but I can't in any way see him being as strong as any Yonko. Just doesn't make logical sense.

Just doesn't make logical sense.
It's illogical because you can't see it? Well, I can see it. So... Is it more logical for you now?

In my opinion it makes the most sense. Rayleigh who could hold his own against an admiral while clearly past his prime could probably defeat one in his prime.

Drawing parallels between Roger's crew and Luffy's crew. The latter one is bound to surpass the former one by the end of the series (any shonen manga logic).

So automatically it puts Zoro on admiral level AT LEAST (EoS). Mihawk is Zoro's end game goal. So logically speaking, shouldn't he be at least on admiral level for Zoro to surpass prime Rayleigh?

Yeah, and the rabbits were strong enough that Luffy didn't risk fighting them. Weren't they overwhelmed by the sheer amount of huge rabbits? Kureha also dispatched a badly injured Sanji, who doesn't fight women. She was actually shocked at how quickly Sanji got up and the energy he and Luffy had.
Luffy had to protect Nami...

I don't think even Luffy or Zoro could have gotten past Pearl's shields, but Sanji was doing well enough. Luffy was able to deal damage because back of Pearl's head isn't protected, and his face was pushed into his shield.

Gin with his weapons, I believe, as opposed to Sanji and his legs. All I get from this is that Sanji had a problem fighting head-to-head using his legs while Gin had an advantage thanks to his weapon, and Luffy accidentally got Pearl from behind and above, where Pearl isn't protected.
Start of Series Luffy defeats a Sea King with one punch. Certainly he could crush that shield.

Also gotta look other factors too, which you implied, like when did they join Croc and become part of the shichibukai?
His organization was secret, so his member's bounties were not frozen.

Swordsmen are generally stronger than hand-to-hand fighters, and Daz could turn his body into blades. And I dunno, but he can keep up with Zoro well enough that they became rivals and were fairly equal.
There is not a single moment where Sanji performs equal to Zoro.

eh, Zoro learned new moves, not necessarily powering up. I still don't see how that doesn't make them similar or equal, or how we went into comparing Zoro and Sanji. This is not a discussion I want to go into again.
Of course new moves are a power-up. What else?

Robin can make more arms and hands to grab Luffy and stop him from stretching. Luffy beating Crocodile doesn't mean he'd beat Robin as well, it doesn't work like that. On the ship to Alabasta, he was powerless against Robin. And to be fair, Luffy beat Crocodile only because of Robin saving him the first time he got wrecked.
We have Robin vs Yama an arc later, same arc where Luffy perfoms equal with Viper and beats Enel. Robin can't have done that.

How so? I don't remember seeing how Pell survived.
It's common sense. Pell doesn't have Haki.

No, it had basis in the manga, if I recall correctly, during the Alabasta arc. The three took on a monster and took it down effortlessly, and the manga often shows them fighting monsters together and taking them down or surviving easily.
Yeah it is just that scene. At that time, they were the top 3 of the crew. Still doesn't make them equals.

Funnily enough, it was Sanji that came out of the slave auction and kicked few Marines, and it was him who got greeted by Luffy. I don't know why Sanji isn't part of the Worst Generation, but he's proven to belong there.
He hasn't. If he would Oda would have done so. He didn't.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

It's no surprise that Kureha was that strong. The same thing almost happened to Zoro too, as he challanged Crocus in Twin Cape.
And I am not denying that. It's more about Sanji's performance throughout the arcsthat just doesn't make him top tier.

Gin was the strongest non-captain in East Blue saga. Proof of it is that he got a bounty higher than any of Arlong officers. He probably would give Luffy trouble too.
Luffy could defeat anyone sans Arlong and Smoker low-diff in East Blue.

Bentham's bounty is lower than expected because of his ability to disguise himself. He is without a doubt stronger tan Zala.
Unlikely. Zala was disguised, too.

On top of that, Bentham's ultimate move is a regular move for Zala. Clearly it is Zala > Bentham.

Bentham was put in level 3 of Impel Down, which usually requires a minimum bounty of 50,000,000, meaning his real treat is at least that high.
Mr. 3 was also put there....

But there's no need to compare their bounties, since we actually got the chance to see Bentham and Daz Bones fighting, and it doesn't seem the difference between them was that high.
That was hardly a serious fight. Bentham can't even scratch Bones who is made of Iron Blades.

However, there was still a difference between Daz Bones and Bentham, since he was higher ranked. That's why Sanji had far less trouble against Bentham, while Zoro almost died fighting his opponent.
The difference has to be absurd.

Loosing a sword and getting it replaced doesn't count as a power-up.
If the new sword is better, of course it does? The new swords in Logue Town for example were highlighted as much sharper, also non-meito swords can be broken.

The CP9 can make their bodies as hard as steel, meaning that by the time of Ennies Lobby arc, Sanji would have no trouble in hurting Daz Bones' body.
No. As hard as steel is more of a figure than anything.

Shanks isn't a man going around trying to best all Swordsmen and improve his swordsmanship. He is a guy trying to be the strongest pirate, which is harder than being the strongest swordsman (even Mihawk said that!). We know he fights with a sword, so does BM. WB fought with a blade as well. They are all stronger than Mihawk. He is more talented with his sword, although even that could very well be a reflection of Shanks not seeking that title out (they were dueling evenly until they stopped. Shanks grew strong enough after that to be one of the 4 most feared pirates in the world).

You guys view WSS as the "best title". Oda has made it pretty clear however that the title of strongest goes to the Yonko. The WG fears them and their crews. They wouldn't send scrubs to capture Shanks.

"Doesn't SOUND as cool?" That your issue? That seems like a YOU issue. Not an issue where we place Mihawk. As far as I can see no one is belittling Mihawk's strength whether they place him YC1 or Admiral. You problem is that we rightfully don't place him at Yonko level and that's an issue for you, not the character.

Power levels are subjective when not knowing the full scale of a characters ability. It's merely our interpretation of Mihawks ability that places him where we do. Don't take it so personally. If Mihawk walked up to says Kaido and sliced him in half, not a single person would be questioning his power level. But your saying we should put him at the highest tier simply because he cut a large amount of ice? Zoro cut a large piece of rock and we all know he isn't Yonko level.

What amazing skills did Shanks show for you people to say he is exactly this strong?

Shanks clashed with WB. Stopped Akainu for a brief moment there. Ok, so going by feats alone he must be around pre-timeskip Akainu level? At most lol.
Its convenient you forget that Shanks also clashed with Whitebeard so if you want to twist our words, "going by feats" Shanks is Whitebeard level since they were even.

Shanks also " skirmished" with Kaido which insinuates an actual physical altercation.

So Shanks clash with the WSC. Clashe with the WSM, and the strongest Admiral... Mihawk cut ice and got stalled by 2 Yonko Commander.

And your mad at us because we don't place Mihawk higher? Re-evaluate your thought process.

Until Mihawk shows feats of him stopping an admiral level then Shanks > Akainu> Mihawk.
Also I don't think Akainu has gotten any stronger than 2 years ago. At this age, they don't really happen to get stronger unless they are like BB who has 2 insanely strong DF.
Stop putting Akainu over Shanks, when it is so clear in the manga that Akainu was to afraid to fight Shanks. Who else has been able to stop Akainu's magma fist besides Shanks or WB?

First off, don't know about you personally, lady, but some people here tend to believe admirals aren't that different from yonkou power level wise.

Me having an issue with you putting Mihawk on YC1 level doesn't have anything to do with my personal feelings. I used to think that Mihawk is way below yonko back in the day. If you have an open mind and consider facts, context, narrative and overall One Piece logic, you would come to conclusion that there's absolutely no fkn way Mihawk could be at YC1. To even assume that is such an insult to common sense...

Oden cut Kaido. Oden. Who was super strong sure. But remind me who has achieved the black blade? Oh right, that was Mihawk! So out of two who has the better ability to cut?

Doesn't change much as I don't agree with that logic to begin with.

Daz Bones deflected Mihawk's slash once. Does it put him on Mihawk's level?

Zoro pushed Fujitora back. Does it make Fujitora less of an admiral level?

As for Zoro cutting a huge stone statue... Do I need to remind you exactly how much effort it took Zoro to pull off that feat? Not only he used help from Orlumbus but there was also prep time + massive amounts of haki involved. Not to mention it was probably one of the strongest named attacks in Zoro's arsenal.

Now compare that to absolutely no effort whatsoever in unintentionally cutting a huge wall of ice from a distance.

I don't think there is much difference between Admiral and Yonko either and have an extensive history of commenting to prove that so when I say I think Mihawk is at most Admiral level and you get offended because I don't say Mihawk is Admiral level "Confidently" that is your OWN insecurity about where he is being placed.

And its clear your not trying to understand why I place Mihawk where I do. Mihawk doesn't have feats to back up where you place him.

Its funny you use facts, context and narrative to rank Mihawk but facts, context, and narrative all point to Shanks having the better feats and thus above Mihawk.... but you don't wanna accept that.

NO FEAT mihawk has is even equal to clashing with Whitebeard or Akainu, let alone using those feats to say he is above Shanks.

Right. Look at how casually Shanks stopped Akainu. Look at how confidently he strode, alone, onto WB's ship and clashed with him...and contrast that to Mihawk "testing" the distance between himself and WB by trying to slash him from a few hundred feet away.

Mihawk must be strong, there is no doubt about that. But to say he can defeat a single Yonko is just stretching everything the story has told us about power and how the OP world works. Look at how much the WG had to stack the deck to defeat a single Yonko.

I think the Schibukai were all YC level-ish. Some are likely Admiral level. I don't see any able to actually defeat a single Yonko. It just warps the power structure Oda very patiently explained.

And if our stance is so wrong, why try so hard to convince us otherwise? Just sit back and enjoy us being so wrong because eventually your going to get to brag about being right and that Mihawk is indeed a Yonko or Yonko+ character lol.

I would gladly take the L personally. I am often dubbed a Mihawk hater by 3 or 4 forum member on here solely because I put Shanks above him when in fact my entire history on this forum shows I am anything but. Just because I place Mihawk below Shanks DOES NOT mean I consider Mihawk weak, that is just narrow minded thinking.

I couldn't imagine being so petty that I'd hate on a fictional character like certain forum members. Who honestly spends or wastes their time hating Mihawk, Zoro, Sanji, Big Mom or any of the other popularly hated characters

And if our stance is so wrong, why try so hard to convince us otherwise? Just sit back and enjoy us being so wrong because eventually your going to get to brag about being right and that Mihawk is indeed a Yonko or Yonko+ character lol.
It's crazy that some are putting him above the Yonko...like what???? I mean, we all see through the transparent reason (it's approaching end game, they want a certain character to be strongest in OP...therefore Mihawk has to be the current strongest.), but it still amazes me. "titles matter...but not Yonko...that isn't important".
