Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

Personally, I think Asura and it's variants are similar to the Santoryu Ogi series of techniques Zoro has and uses as his finishers. Despite it having it's own designation, he's never fought in it for an extended period of time to really call it a mode.

Now, King of Hell? Definitely a mode. It boosts his OG techniques to another level, as modes usually do, and he can fight in it for an extended period. Asura should also fall under that umbrella as, we can assume, most of Zoro's previous Asura's weren't utilizing CoC. The one against Kaido is the one we know for sure was "King of Hell" boosted as he put everything into the attack like he was going to die. This goes into Zoro's later realization that, in order to master Enma, he had to keep putting everything he had into the swords, even if he were to die. Thus, "King of Hell".
I think it's quite the opposite.

What even is "king of hell" ?
That is simply Zoro using advanced conqueror's haki, isn't it (or was there something else that was going on there)? Just like how Luffy using advanced conqueror's isn't a mode, this isn't a mode too IMO

Asura however triples his head and limbs (apparently), seems like he can fight in that form for a short duration as well. He also seemingly have techniques within asura too. IMO this is more fitting of a "mode".
But yes, unless he can maintain this form for at least a minute or so, it would be debatable whether it is a "mode" or a "finisher"
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Now with Gear 5, it's kinda hard to say how much of a power up it is. Yes I know Luffy managed to defeat Kaido with Gear 5 somehow? But His attacks were not that effective unlike Gear 4 ACoC, but that's not the point right now. Now after Onigashima Idk how the power levels between the Monster Trio are. I think Gear 2 Luffy with ACoC could high diff a YC2, idk a YC1 yet... Since I don't think Luffy even in Gear 5 is at the same strength Kaido was in taking down YC1s in one hit.
G2 with advanced conqueror's was giving Kaido some trouble.

It would smoke a YC2 and high-extreme diff a YC1

I'm not sure if I'm going to explain my thought process on this clearly, but I'll give it a go.

I think "King of Hell" is a mode, but I don't expect it to remain a mode basically. Given what's been implied during the King fight, Zoro is on a timer when using it since it saps his stamina due to Enma. It's not something he can keep up continuously at the moment, much like Gear 2 Pre Time Skip.

However, I don't view Gear 2 as a form anymore as Luffy has basically integrated it into his normal repertoire since the start of the time-skip, to the point where he doesn't even call it out anymore or take the pose to transform. Post Time Skip Gear 2 = Base Luffy to me. So I see King of Hell eventually becoming Base Zoro sometime in the future. Luffy has always been something of a haki prodigy who had already decently mastered basic CoC. He didn't need an external source to get things moving for him because as soon as he understood what Kaido was doing, he was able to replicate it. It's possible that his application does take some stamina, but it wasn't made a plot point as Zoro's use of it was.

I think that's not different from Luffy stretching his arm before throwing a Pistol.

The only way to differentiate what is a technique or a mode/form is the narrative... and to me the narrative dictates that Azura or Diable Jamble are just finisher moves.
I think it's reasonable to compare azura to something like luffy's gears rather than a mere technique. Through azura zoro gets an entirely new, and presumably more powerful, fighting style. And with that however many either new or improved techniques. Diable jambe in turn has been mastered enough that sanji uses it casually and arbitrarily in his base mode. It's a tad different now from how it was handled in part 1. I suppose it's technically a mode though in practice closer to how luffy uses gear 2 and 3.

Technically Zoro threw multiple attacks against Kaido in Asura form- at least 3 based on the panel.

And could an ininjured Zoro maintain Asura longer ? Maybe.

I think DJ is definitely a form now, Sanji can maintain it for a prolonged period of time.

What is subjective about Kaido having an outright superior portrayal to BM?
You agree Luffy always gets the strongest. Kaido has additional portrayals such as 1v1 bet on Kaido, being referred to as the strongest creature/pirate and so on.
I would generally not focus too much on feats. But Kaido also has future sight, something BM doesn't have. This would also contribute to tipping the scales,

What is subjective is the gap between them, I can agree on that.
Point being, we can disagree on the numbers. I may say it's Kaido 100 and BM 95, you may disagree with the numbers, that's perfectly fine. But what is undeniable is Kaido having both superior feats and superior portrayal. It would be one thing if it was just superior feats but same portrayal, but that isn't the case here really.
To start I just want to say I do think Kaido is stronger than BM for pretty much the same reasons you do. My reply to you is more a self reflection on how at least the way I came to that conclusion is more subjective than I originally cared to admit.

I don't think the portrayals themselves are subjective but the interpretation of the portrayal to determine power level relative to someone in the same tier is subjective. For example you referenced the 1v1 bet on Kaido, Kaido strongest creature etc but it's not clear how these titles translate to a power level. Heck we had so many debates on what Strongest Creature means and how it compares to Strongest Man in this thread. BM has several things said about her that are meant to hype her and someone can make the claim that she has the edge over Kaido due to those portrayals. We can disagree with that person but the actual substance of our arguments wouldn't have any more weight.

As for feats, unfortunately they aren't very consistent in OP and they don't provide enough info to make the call when two people are close. I think we can both agree feats make it easy to put people into their tiers. But like you said its pretty subjective once you get to people in the same tiers since it's very difficult to use feats to determine who is stronger.

Yep, that's all I am saying. "Average" Yonko > "Average" admiral

The numbers themselves are subjective, it's fine to have disagreements there. Me saying 100 vs 95 is just my way of saying Yonkos will win, but it's an extreme diff

Yeah, I also believe that we will be seeing stronger hidden powerhouses in WG.
Imu is a sure thing.
I think Gorosei are also above admirals. One of them apparently has a supreme grade sword, and everyone who have them are at least Yonko tier (Roger, WB, Shanks, Mihawk). Plus, I don't think admirals and the entire marine/WG organization can be held together by Gorosei if they were some fodder figureheads. Their scars also suggest they are battle hardened veterans, probably fought back even 800 years ago and defeated the ancient kingdom,
Yeah I think I'm pretty much on the same page with you on this one. Will be interesting to see an Admiral go all out before we get to anyone of stronger level on the WG side.

This is something I struggle with a lot myself as well. If you have seen my rankings, Akainu's position is something I always struggle with, sometimes I put him alongside Kaido, sometimes I put him below BM. I myself flipflop on Akainu, though currently I am of the opinion that Akainu is moreso comparable to Kaido.

What isn't subjective here is that WB (off the meds) >= Akainu.
That was clearly the intent from Oda (to show an extreme diff fight where WB also gets KO'd in the end), as well as the straight up conclusive feats.

We will really have to see Akainu going all out, before being completely judging where both Akainu as well as WB (on meds as well as off meds) really stand.

If Akainu turns out to be an absolute boss, that will also elevate WB as well.
Yes, both WB in meds as well as WB off the meds.

It is very much possible that WB off the meds was stronger than BM.
There is something people miss out about WB. It wasn't that other Yonkos were comparable to him. It was that he let them share his era, and he could've become the king any time he wished to.
I sited this example because it's one that comes up a lot but I don't think the core issue has to do with any particular characters. Honestly this is an inherent problem of creating power levels/taxonomic structures with the characters. Situations in the story are more complicated than our categorizations/buckets so we end up getting weird contradictions that seem wrong. In reality conflicting yet seemingly coherent thoughts are perfectly okay e.g. "I feel happy and I feel sad." I know some people would say wait that doesn't make sense, those are contradictions etc but I think contradictions are a part of it all. That is to say, I WB not on meds can be stronger than Akainu but still be weaker than Big Mom who we think is weaker than Akainu lol

To address these..........Let's talk about WB here.

Point 1:
Prime WB = Roger. Both are clearly at a different level from "Yonkos", considering both had Yonko level right hand men - in prime Rayleigh and Oden.

WB was most likely in his prime, when the concept of "Yonko" was introduced.
He was also stated to be very well capable of being PK if he chose to, multiple times in the series really. Also was considered the defacto PK, called king of the sea, strongest pirate.

Old WB (in meds) was also unanimously considered the strongest pirate and strongest man. The king of the seas.
He had conqueror's haki on par with Shanks', who is now confirmed the strongest conqueror's haki user alive, on a different level from both Kaido and BM. Old WB (in meds) also had "always on" (advanced) observation haki which allowed him to no diff a younger Ace (who was at least Jinbe tier back then) in his sleep.

Considering these, would it really an issue if old WB (in meds) is indeed considerably stronger than BM?
It wouldn't even cause any narrative issues, because WB never contested for any land and was minding his own business really.

Point 2:
Are the crews even comparable? How does WB's crew compare with Kaido's or BM's crew?

WB pirates in their peak had:
- Marco
- Ace
- Jozu
- Vista
- Thatch
- Blackbeard
- 10 other commanders implied to be at least Tobiroppo tiers
- many veteran allied captains.

Marco outright has considerable portrayal over King and Katakuri. Fought with Kizaru, matched an attack from angry Akainu. He is hyped in data books as someone who can give a challenge to admirals, which is portrayal. While we know what happened to King (full health or not, it's a bad look to get no diff'd)....
Marco also fought BM for almost the same duration Scabbards combined fought Kaido, and came out of the fight without any major injuries. After spending stamina on BM, he again spent stamina on healing up the entire floor. And then fought King + Queen for quite a considerable duration of time. And it wasn't even really like he was a punching bag relying on his DF heals, in fact he was the one mostly shown to be on the offense in what little of the offscreen fight we saw.

Jozu. Injured an admiral (though off guard). Tanked attack from Mihawk. I say he is definitely above Queen, and is in YC2 tier

Ace. Matched an attack from Aokiji. The novel also suggest he is incredibly strong, capable of fighting a non serious WB (in meds) for hours. Borderline YC1 tier IMO

Vista. Fought equally with a non serious Mihawk. Even if he's non serious, Mihawk is Mihawk, and Vista earned his praise. You aren't doing this if you aren't really strong. He's likely borderline YC1 tier

Thatch. He was portrayed to be at least stronger than a younger Ace, who stalemated Jinbe. YC3 tier at minimum.

Blackbeard (pre fruit). Strong enough to scar Shanks. Probably some commander level.

10 lower commanders.
While we don't know where they all exactly stand, they are at minimum Tobiroppo level. We saw this with Izo.
Izo defeated one of the two CP0 agents in a 1v2, each of them being strong enough to mid diff Drake, arguably the strongest Tobiroppo.

WB also had notable allied captains, who are respected veterans. Such as Whitey Bay, Oars Jr and Sqaurdo.

Considering all these......................is anyone gonna seriously argue that Kaido's or BM's crew is even remotely comparable to WB's?
WB crew blow them out the water!! It's not even close.
These are some good points. I think the first one makes more sense for our context since we were more discussing 1v1s, and not taking crews into consideration. These are all good ways to help us think through the contradictions for sure but also introduce their own potential problems to the power level dynamics.

There is nothing wrong with point 1, old WB (on meds) being stronger than BM. However, what this misses is that it was old WB (not on meds) that defeated Akainu in high diff way. However, old WB (not on meds) couldn't use CoC, had heart attacks, couldn't use CoO to not get stabbed by Squardo etc. These would make one think that BM is stronger than old WB (not on meds) since she can use CoC, can't actually get stabbed by someone like Squardo due to her durability, doesn't struggle with heart attacks etc. What does that leave us to conclude about BM vs Marineford Akainu? I'd say she should be able to defeat him in 1v1 at least high diff. However, that would mean that Marineford Akainu (who we all think is above average admiral) is weaker than BM (who we think is average to below average Yonko).

I think we can both agree feats make it easy to put people into their tiers. But like you said its pretty subjective once you get to people in the same tiers since it's very difficult to use feats to determine who is stronger.
Is it really all that subjective though?

What is subjective of "1v1 always bet on Kaido" ?

I understand the conflict with whole "strongest creature" argument. Because there are people, including myself, who has thought that "creature" = "all species except humans". Which means, the title refers to basically other species - fishmen, oni, giant etc.
Same for "strongest man". Man here IMO refers to "humans" as a whole. Not all males in all species.

Now here is where the part without conflict comes in. "Strongest pirate" is a title without any room for interpretation at all. It simply means the strongest amongst those who are pirates. There are only two people who have held that title - WB and Kaido.
Kaido has also been referred to as the "strongest pirate". This was a title previously held by WB, which then got held by Kaido post TS.
Is there anything subjective about "strongest pirate"? Where is the confusion?

Lastly, lets even assume that Kaido and BM are relative in pure stats, even though the actual feats suggest otherwise (because we both agree that there is some wiggle room when it comes to feats).
But, having future sight when stats are relative, is simply better than not having them. Even if they are equal in every other stat, future sight makes the difference. Future sight isn't simply something we can throw into the bucket of wiggle room.

My next argument would be. Is there ANTYHING Big Mom has over Kaido? Anything??

Yeah I think I'm pretty much on the same page with you on this one. Will be interesting to see an Admiral go all out before we get to anyone of stronger level on the WG side.
Yeah, I would agree with that.
I doubt Oda has the time to have them all go all out. But, especially one of the OG three at least should go all out.

That is to say, I WB not on meds can be stronger than Akainu but still be weaker than Big Mom who we think is weaker than Akainu lol
Ehh, I suppose we just have to disagree on that lol.

If Akainu comes out to be an absolute boss in the next arc, that elevates old WB (out of meds) as well IMO. It would simply mean that old WB (in meds) and peak WB especially, were absolute monsters.

These are some good points. I think the first one makes more sense for our context since we were more discussing 1v1s, and not taking crews into consideration. These are all good ways to help us think through the contradictions for sure but also introduce their own potential problems to the power level dynamics.
I mentioned and compared the crews, because "crews" are a part of what makes a pirate a "Yonko". There can be incredibly strong pirates like Mihawk and potentially Aokiji, that will never become Yonko because they won't have crews.

Crews are also part of the discussion when it comes to comparing Yonkos.
There is an enormous gulf between WB's crew and the crew of Kaido/BM. Even more than the gap between even peak WB and Kaido/BM.

My point was simply to disprove the commonly held notion that Yonkos are in some kind of balance. Kinda.....but not really. Because two of the four OG Yonkos (namely WB and Shanks) simply had no plans for expansion or world domination.

It is a perception vs reality scenario. Especially as far as the casual OP world is concerned.
Perception: People thought WB was "closest to PK, closest to OP". Reality: he could've become all that whenever he wished to, but simply had no intention of doing so.
Perception: there is a balance between the four Yonkos that maintain peace. Reality: two out of the four Yonkos are chill dudes who won't bite unless unreasonably provoked.

I completely get what you are saying.
As of now, I have no counter to this. If you ask me right now who is stronger, old WB (out of meds) or BM? I will say BM for sure.

I will say however that, even without conqueror's haki, Yonkos are still absolute monsters. WB still had the strongest paramecia fruit, which he mastered and was probably awakened (because WB can transfer the tremors to his blade and such, instead of just using it from his body)

Would BM get stabbed by Squardo? Absolutely not, it wouldn't even scratch her.
But, does BM have as much attack power as even old WB (out of meds) ? I highly doubt it.

Ultimately. My point would be that where old WB (out of meds) stand, is dependent on how strong Akainu turns out to be. Because there is one thing which absolutely is NOT subjective: old WB (out of meds) >= Akainu.
Wherever Akainu lands, old WB (out of meds) land right on top of it. Wouldn't this be the most obvious and logical interpretation? Unless of course Akainu is explicitly stated to have got stronger in the last two years (my default position is that Akainu is same level pre TS and post TS, because he is in his 50s and has peaked based on every pattern we have seen in the series so far)

Yet they still like to mention Big Mom & Kaido fought for 12hours…LMFAO & They are relative to each other….Ppl just lack the comprehension that Kaido is still stronger simply by the context of the manga.

Yep.
Even for that "12 hour" fight, the context simply is that they were having a brawl with pretty much no intent to actually go lethal. It was their way of greeting each other when meeting after so long.

Best we can get from that is that their physical strength and haki are relative, but that's about it.

Agree to disagree on Law/Kid vs BM round 2.
Yeah there is a big distinction on Luffy vs Kaido compared to Law/kid vs BM.

I don't think this arc made any sense in power ups. Oda focused too much on the extra million characters than on the original ones that needed the attention. For example, Usopp, Franky, Robin, Brook, were all backgrounded until the their Flying 6 fights and even then it made no sense. People like Carrot and Yamato for SHPs but to me that distracts form the original Strawhats and we don't get to see them shine properly. Hell its been 2-3 chapters and we still don't know the bounties for the rest of the crew.

There is no hype for them to be Yonko level. It would not make sense at all. The WG has 6 Yonko Level characters plus 3-6 admiral levels who are close to Yonkos, but yet they fear and allow the Yonko to exercise their control over the seas. NAH.

A lot of people in this forum like to run their imagination wild. Nice that you @ NO ONE IN PARTICULAR, feel that Kuro may be Yonko level with no back up evidence but please do not post it on thread. Keep some stuff to yourself unless you have concrete evidence that may support it. IF not then anybody can just make absurd claims.

The Redforce Podcast is a YouTube thing and they joke about people who think Im is strong. It's just a joke.

I don't have an opinion about Im strong enough to stand by. He's a complete mystery to me.

Who else would Buggy need in his Cross Guild to beat the Strawhats in a straight up brawl?

Who would you like to see increase Buggy's offensive power?
Probably Wevil and Boa.

Im, Gorosei, Weevil and Dragon should be excluded from any power rankings at the moment. Dragon and Weevil I can understand but Im or the Gorosei, no. Either you are trolling or plain dumb to rank those two, when we have seen NOTHING of power that indicates they are strong much less Yonko level.
Just because they are the highest level of WG doesn't necessarily mean they powerful.

Wasn't Weevil flat out stated to be as strong as a young Whitebeard?

Let’s rank the fodder. Anyone can think of levels or tiers to the different fodder lv characters…

What's the strongest character that constitutes a fodder to you?

You don't have to be either to assume that Imu and Gorosei are strong.
Assuming they are high tier would be headcanon? Absolutely. But there are certainly hints/narratives in the story which justifies that thought process.

I will still agree with you that Imu and Gorosei shouldn't be included in rankings. Or if they are, put them in hon mentions, or straight up acknowledge that it's headcanon based on hype, like @LaGOAT did.

Some narrative reasons in support for Imu and Gorosei being incredibly strong:
- Imu is the ruler of the WG. Gorosei bows to him. You think he will be all that, and turn out to be some fodder? Why would Gorosie bow to him, and recognize his absolute superiority?

- Gorosei are the rulers of the WG and marines, as far as everyone else is concerned. Because Imu is a secret.
The fleet admiral, admirals, CP0, Kong etc. All of these power houses bow to Gorosei. Some of them even hot heads and strong willed people like Akainu and Sengoku.
Do you think they would do that to some fodder figure heads? CP9 laughed at the figure head Spandam, they had zero respect for him. But listened to him only because of the people guaranteeing his authority.
At the end of the day, authority and order/control comes from some form of power. Who gives authority to Gorosei themselves? Who is the guaranteer of the power behind the Gorosei? There is nobody above the Gorosei. Hence, narratively speaking, they must command some power themselves.

- Speculation about one of the Gorosei carrying Kitketsu I
If that is indeed what he is carrying, the narrative implication is quite powerful. Only people to have wielded supreme grade swords yet in the series are at least Yonko level - Roger, Whitebeard, Mihawk, Shanks (?)
You may say - "he might have just bought it with money or something". Well, that is one way to look at it, cause he has money. But, supreme grade swords would eventually just kill off their owner if they turn out to be some fodder.

- Imu and Goroseri seemingly don't age!!
Gorosei looked literally the same 20+ years ago during Ohara incident, as they look now.
It is very likely that they have been alive for 800+ years, and were the main fighters of the alliance which took down the great kingdom. Unlike the regular trash fodder you see amongst Tenryubito, Gorosei all look very battle hardened and have scars. Indicating combat experience.
