Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

No one is saying he is weak because he couldn't one shot Vista. What I'm saying is that Vista is an elite swordsman said to have the swordskill that rival or may even surpass Mihawk's.

This hypes up Vista, not downplays Mihawk

Swordplay is simply another form of fighting in the One Piece world and both Mihawk and Vista are at the pinnacle of that form of combat
Where was that said?

Where was that said?

One Piece Visual Dictionary:

"Vista has the skills to compete with Mihawk, one of the most famous swordsmen in the world. He wasn't afraid to confront him despite knowing Mihawk was the strongest."

However that's not new, and something similar had already been revealed in another databook.

One Piece Blue Deep:

"Vista showed his swordsmanship which is equal or superior to Mihawk's in this fight."

Compliments of @Fox666

And before the excuses flow in, Oda is credited with authoring One Piece Deep Blue

Throughout the entirety of Wano, the land of the strongest Samurai, and the birthplace of one of the 5 strongest men Kaido has ever faced the most important sword skill they demonstrated was Haki.

  1. Hyogoro taught Luffy their native skill, Ryuo, which he used to fight and defeat Kaido
  2. Oden taught the Scabbards Haki (via flashback) which they used to pierce Kaido’s scales to his surprise.
  3. Enma “taught” Zoro Haki manipulation

The only “sword skill” learned was Kinemom’s fox fire style which was so important that it was off-screened and to this day have zero explanation for the mechanics of how Zoro learned it.

Of course it wasn't mentioned in the manga at all, not surprised. But neither entry indicates Vista would win, which does further imply that Mihawk is the strongest swordsman. Also I lost the point of what we're talking about. As far as I know, I saw somewhere where it was implied that Mihawk might be overhyped, I disagreed with that and was told that no one said Mihawk was weak, and now we're talking about how Vista isn't weak at all (which makes sense since Mihawk recognized him).

What do you mean it wasn't mentioned in the manga. He literally fought Mihawk to a stand still. We all saw that with our own eyes.

Oda literally just reiterated what we all saw, further confirming Vista's swordsmanship is equal to Mihawk's.

Mihawk stans are trying to push the narrative that because people are saying Vista's swordsmanship is equal to Mihawk then that means we are downplaying Mihawk.

It's all cope

Hopefully that helps you lol

Until I see Mihawk blocking a Yonko or Admiral's attack or taking down a $3B in one shot, can I put him among Shanks.
But so far his best feat has been clashing with Vista.

Take away his title and Mihawk is not near Shanks level from the on screen manga feats. Nobody can claim otherwise.

Mihawk like Shanks has been tagging along and never got his character development. How is he even important to the story at all with so little involvement? Seems like Oda is desperate to tight up loose ends.

But that was off-screened, and we don't know how long the fight was for and how much effort Mihawk put in, if he was playing around. or at least, I remember Vista blocking a strike meant for Luffy, and the exchange where Vista was honored Mihawk knew his name, and Mihawk saying it's because Vista is that good.

Stans don't think properly anyway.

Eh, I just think Mihawk is overrated, and that he's likely being overhyped not by his own fans, but by Zoro fans to make Zoro look better than he is for when he beats Mihawk.

So yeah, Vista showed swordsmanship equal to a suppressed Mihawk.

Guys, don't take powerlevels in One Piece so seriously

There's also some powercreep involved since Marineford arc

I think the gap between an Yonko and their commanders was not so big, so Mihawk stalling with Vista was plausible

Now you have to assume that Mihawk can one-shot any pirate lesser than an Yonko

To me the Titles help hype the characters and makes it clear we can expect a lot out of them. Where they start to lose literal meaning is when using the Title as a feat since they are relatively vague. For example would you say that Luffy is now the World's Strongest Creature? Technically he is a Creature of some sort and is the closest individual to have beaten the previous WSC title holder in a fight. Or do you think the title WSC is now gone? Same with WB. Technically from MF War, Akainu delivered the fatal injury to WB (despite what BB & crew did WB was a dead man walking after his last bout with Akainu). Would you argue Akainu should have title of Worlds Strongest Man?

If in order to arrive at a conclusion for the above questions you need to use feats from the actual characters, put context into fights they have been in, etc then the argument is no longer based on Titles. It is back to normal power scaling question of is A stronger than B using the feats we have seen or expect based on narrative. The titles are cool and all but we actually don't have our debates using them since they aren't real substance in of themselves.
Regarding Kaido.
"Creature" here IMO refers to anyone other than man, i.e human. So oni, ogre, fishman etc. Luffy is a human and doesn't count, but anyway Kaido is still stronger IMO

Regarding Whitebeard, the narrative in Marineford was simply that he was no longer WSM.
- Crocodile: the man I lost to can't be this weak
- Marco: he has gotten weak (flashback to him removing the meds some days ago), he would've dodged any such sneak attacks in the past
- Whitebeard: they call me a monster, but I am just a man. I cannot be strongest forever, if I can help a young pirate achieve his destiny, isn't that enough?

There is simply no WSM anymore after WB. Because its more debatable. While with (healthy) Whitebeard, the answer was pretty clear and hence he was WSM.

The title here matters, because if Mihawk isn't WSS, then Zoro should be chasing after someone else (in this case Shanks). It's pretty simple really.
This is why official materials say he is WSS in both title and ACTUALITY.
My point simply is that, until feats prove otherwise the default should be to go based on portrayal/statements.

Let me ask you this. Would Zoro not in ACTUALITY become the WSS after defeating Mihawk? Or will there still be some secret swordsmen who are actually stronger than Zoro and EoS Zoro will be a fraud too?

The point of the above examples is that it forced you to do standard power scaling assessment of comparing A to B. You could not use the title WSS as a blanket win. And without the blanket win of WSS you have to rely solely on narrative expectation of Mihawk is top tier to make your case against Yamato. So when dealing with characters that are for sure not "swordsman" all you've done is subsituted WSS with Top Tier title. You said Mihawk is Top Tier, Yamato is not Top Tier so Mihawk > Yamato.
You didn't force me to acknowledge anything that I didn't know or acknowledge before.
Comparing swordsmen to WSS is logical, comparing non-swordsmen to WSS needs more context for obvious reason

Top tier is a fanmade term, but we understand that's the ballpark where Yonko, admirals and other strongest in the world reside. Mihawk vs Yamato isn't debatable for the same reason Rocks or Dragon vs Yamato isn't ddebatable.
One only need to read the story properly to conclude this

But technically if going by WSS title, since Coby is not a swordsman the corollary must be true. And when using feats to make your case for Mihawk being stronger than Coby all you are left with his hype since 0 feats have been shown for Mihawk since Marineford!
Man......I just don't know what to say here.
It's like we're thinking on completely different wavelength here

Let me make it clear:
- for swordsmen comparison, it's easy and we can use WSS
- for non swordsmen comparison, we need more context, like their overall level

It isn't that is someone isn't a swordsman, corollary must be true. NOBODY thinks like that.
It's more of, if someone isn't a swordsman, then WSS can't be used by default and we need to use the context. Just like how if someone isn't a man (I presume it means human here as is common in literature), that just means for non humans comparison to (healthy) Whitebeard we need to use context since we can't default to title of WSM.

This is the part I only semi agree with. The unbiased view is that Shanks fans need to wait and cannot conclude how Shanks stacks against Mihawk. The unbiased view is that Mihawk fans need to wait and cannot conclude how Mihawk stacks against Shanks. The title/portrayal places Mihawk in this top tier but without feats cannot be used to conclude much else.
Unbiased view is also that the title and narrative holds SOME MEANING, and by default we have to accept them until proven otherwise.

Like I said, at the end of the day it's upto what you value.
- if your position is that ONLY feats matter, then obviously yeah. I for such people, I would say keep the same energy for others like Rocks, Garp, Dragon etc too.
- if your position is that narrative and statements are to be taken by default until disproven by manga (my position), then you default to the title.

But Kaido isn't trained in the way of the blade nor does he honor it he's by all means a barbarian can we truly call him a swordsman?

Are swordsman for you guys anyone that wields a blade? So Say Luffy could use a blade in a fight and win would that then just qualify him to be a swordsman?

Me personally I feel that one needs to have the same dedication as the likes of Mihawk, Vista and Zoro in order to be truly classified as a swordsman, but hey ho it all falls down to personal interpretation.
If Kaido sticks to his base/hybrid mode, and stick to using a sword while not using blast breath and so on. Then yes, that particular Kaido would be a swordsman.

Yes, if Luffy sticks to using a sword in a fight, that would be Luffy a swordsman in that particular fight.

No. This is the classic reduction of swordsmanship to like 3 dudes in the entire series I'm talking about.
If you fight with sword without using some ability that clearly falls outside of swordsmanship, then you're a swordsman. Roger, Rayleigh, Oden and Shanks are all swordsmen, they just fight with swords and have no DF.
I don't understand not calling them swordsmen. Roger valued his sword so much that he named his son after it. All we've seen Rayleigh fight is with his sword (except for training purposes for Luffy). Everything Shanks has done in the series so far is with his sword. Oden valued his swords so much that it was his only inheritance to his children

Mihawk clashing with Vista is something that fans have to ignore.

We always knew that Mihawk's powerlevel would be plotholish.

It's not different from Crocodile you know the rest.
At some level, I do understand this. Even aside from agendas and all.

Because the OG admirals getting stalled by WB commanders were their biggest source of downplay FOR A DECADE.
But now we know that they are clear and solid top tiers. The logical thing to do here is to assume WB commanders (the main ones) were a cut above the Kaido/BM commanders, and that the admirals/Mihawk weren't going all out during their fight in MF (admirals cause they need to worry about collateral damage, Mihawk cause he couldn't give a fuck)

They ignore it because its an inconvenience for them and makes their beloved Mihawk look weaker than he should be. Mihawk vs Vista isn't the same as Crocodile vs Mihawk.

I can see Mihawk being Admiral level
I don't ignore anything lol. I just think it's pointless responding to you, since all you care about are feats with no value on narrative or statements. We're simply going in circles at this point.
We all know who will look bad once Mihawk start getting actual feats :) . Actually no, maybe you don't, I do think you actually believe what you say. For what it's worth, you don't come off as someone agenda driven at least to me

Eh, I just think Mihawk is overrated, and that he's likely being overhyped not by his own fans, but by Zoro fans to make Zoro look better than he is for when he beats Mihawk.
Maybe. But if we are calling out agenda, it's also Shanks fans and Zoro haters that downplay Mihawk too :)

Regardless, I would argue that the unbiased view is to go by what is reiterated in manga and official materials multiple times over years - that Mihawk is indeed WSS, that there is no secret WSS in the shadows until proven otherwise in the manga

My Mihawk vs Vista stance is not a power level discussion and overall my point was this:

Where swordsmanship is concerned, Mihawk and Vista are equals or near equals.

In overall power level, Mihawk is far and away stronger.

Which is why my stance is that Swordsmanship 🚫 Overall power level

If you deny this, you are simply biased (my opinion)

Regarding Kaido.
"Creature" here IMO refers to anyone other than man, i.e human. So oni, ogre, fishman etc. Luffy is a human and doesn't count, but anyway Kaido is still stronger IMO
If what a Creature is can be an opinion that already tells me the title WSC can't be used literally since its already an open discussion on who/what qualifies. This to me already opens a can of worms for the WSS debate since it's clear many people have differing definitions of Swordman on this forum. This to me further weakens trying to have title as the foundation of a power level discussion between relative peers.

At the heart of it my argument is that a persons power level is a complex combination of multiple things in which titles/narratives play a part but are not the most important (IMO). I believe the most important aspect of power level is actual feats. Title/narrative do have meaning hence why I place Mihawk as a top tier fighter sitting alongside the Yonko purely on title/narrative. If I were power scaling Mihawk based on feats he is at best a YC so I am not ignoring the title completely. My problem is taking the title/narrative further to try to conclude anything about how Mihawk scales against his peer group of top tiers i.e. the other Yonko. That is what I disagree with in your argument.

I agree that WB was weaker than he used to be and lost in a 1v1 to Akainu. Akainu is a man and he defeated the previous title holder. As long as "man" exists in the OP world the title will always exist. If all characters that can fight died you can still have title WSM held by someone who we'd today consider a fodder. That's the thing with these titles, they are all RELATIVE and not true standards that we can use to compare characters over time.

Like I said above titles matter but not to the extent you are taking them. The core flaw of these titles when taken too literally is that they are vague. I think we all can agree that we all don't agree on terms such as "Swordman", "Creature", and "Man". The fact that even a small pool of readers on this forum already can't agree on these terms makes the titles not a great tool for power scaling debates since we will just be talking past each other.

Some people define "swordman" to mean anyone who uses a sword (regardless of their skill using the sword). By this definition Luffy at one point was a swordman since he has very unskillfully attempted to fight with swords in the past. Others use a more expansive definition of "swordman" and will count anyone who uses a blade whether that is a sword, their own body, or a variation weapon that is bladed (heck we can have a whole debate on what counts as a sword too). Others use a more restrictive definition of "swordman" that doesn't count the use of haki as a factor etc. Both you and I have been on this forum long enough to remember the pages of debate on what "Creature" means and lord we all know Yamato opened the what is a "Man" can of worms too. If the meaning of the titles is so openly being debated whenever any one of them comes up that to me is evidence that they are poor tools for power scaling debates.

Now focusing on just you and me, I think we actually agree on more than we disagree. To me Swordsmanship is a skill, art, profession, culture, & ethos. For me to consider someone a Swordman they truly have to live the full life of a Swordman. I do think Shanks is a Swordman from what we have seen. I do think Kaku is a Swordman. I don't think WB was a Swordman even though he used a bladed weapon that is part of the 12 Great Blades. I also don't think characters like King are swordmen since they are more versatile fighters who just happen to use swords at times. This to me is similar to how I wouldn't consider every person who uses a gun (which is almost all fodder) marksmen.

So my answer YES if Zoro defeats Mihawk (assume Mihawk hasn't lost to any other swordman beforehand) then Zoro will become WSS. As far as the fraud concept that is up to Oda but I'd hope he wouldn't go there.

One only need to read the story properly to conclude this
My point here is to force you to debate power level with something more substantive than just an ephemeral title that people can't even agree on definition of. You split the world into two buckets with the one title but technically we have several official titles/positions in OP that are not mutually exclusive either. There are Swordman & non Swordman, there are Creatures and Not Creatures, there are Man and Not Man, there are Yonko and not Yonko (yes Yonko is a title). To me trying to create a sensible matrix of power level using just these titles wouldn't move any power level debates forward.

And yes top tier is fan made term that is equally as nebulous as the manga made titles. The core here is that the definitions are not clear cut in either case and a person can substitute one for the other and not be saying anything of substance to the A vs B debate. That's why we have so many people here already disagreeing on this Mihawk v Shanks thing since the title is not a clear enough definition.

That is literally what the corollary being true means so not sure why you are saying no one thinks like that. As far as the substance of this argument, in theory you can say I will split the population of OP fighters into two camps (1) swordman and (2) not swordman. And you can say based on title Mihawk is stronger than all people in group (1) and for people in group (2) I have to do standard power scaling. However, who is in group (1) and who is in group (2)? That's not a clean cut question and people are actively debating this and until this can be resolved drawing any conclusion from the title doesn't amount to much.

Unbiased view is that titles/narratives hold SOME MEANING. Biased view is titles/narratives hold ALL MEANING.

My position is that the title WSS gets Mihawk into consideration for Top Tier. If my position was feats are the only thing that matter then Mihawk currently would be YC2 at best. I am not arguing that (there are others here that do and do extend that out to characters like Rocks).

My biased opinion is that I do think Mihawk is stronger than Shanks. But I know this is a biased view since it requires opinion to make this claim. Similarly I also think anyone claiming that Shanks is stronger than Mihawk also has a biased opinion.

The unbiased opinion is that based on feats + title/narrative both Shanks & Mihawk are top tier fighters that are in the same ball park of each other. Beyond that no one can claim who is stronger without it being biased in some way.

The logic of Mihawk HAVING to be stronger than Shanks due to Mihawk PROBABLY (not certain) being Zolo's End Of Series opponent. thus Mihawk has to be stronger than Shanks, is broken.
We have no idea if Mihawk will truly be Zolo's last opponent. Zolo is after the title of WSS. not after Mihawk. Zolo is only interested in beating Mihawk because he is the current WSS.
For all we know somebody else, maybe Shiryu or a knew character could appear and defeat Mihawk for the title. Then Zolo would go after that person.

If anything Shanks probably has no interest in the WSS title and allows Mihawk to have it. Shanks is no way scared or worried about Mihawk.

The problem you also run into with taking titles too seriously is that you have people who will argue that Mihawk is above anyone with a sword. Meaning... Roger, Rocks, Oden, Shiki, Shanks, and even Garp(because for some reason they gave him a sword in the animal when he faced Rocks) simply because he has the WSS title.

You corner yourself when you take these titles as absolutes. Mihawk title is solely for Zoro's benefit not beneficial to the story where power scaling is concerned
