Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

Luffy/Hody ended correct? And instead of getting medical help Luffy attacked Noah. This isnt difficult to understand.
Doesnt change the fact that major reason for blood transfusion is Hody's bite and not attacking Noah.
Did he attack Noah after he beat Krieg, Lucci, Doflamingo?

No, but I'm also not saying he walked away from those fights. I have already admitted as much

You know... I think the issue here was that Zoro refused to decapitate the guy.
If Zoro had simply gone on and cut off his head or something, then maybe everyone would agree he won. At the very least, those few extra seconds would've been enough to do that, right?
Of course it was very clear Zoro was the victor. How can it be called a draw when Zoro had the choice of either "killing or sparing" him in those few seconds he stood conscious. We really need a chapter. It's quite intriguing what we argue these days.
Well, going by some definitions here, even that may not mean he won.

You are going out of your way to ignore what I am writing.
Nope, I'm reading what you're saying.

You're the one being ridiculous, that's just the reality.

Did Zoro have the large task of breaking up a ship as large as Fishman island after he got stabbed? No? Then it was different than Luffy's situation.
This is where your logic is warped and profoundly dislocated.

Whether or not Luffy destroyed a ship has nothing to do with his defeating Hody.

A fight is between 2 living things. How a ship somehow determines the winner amazes me.

The ship and Hody are 2 different things.

Breaking a ship or not is completely irrelevant.

Winning a fight and breaking a ship, those are 2 different tasks in itself.

They are not mutually exclusive.

Luffy could have defeated/won Hody and failed to destroy the ship.

Luffy could have defeated/won Hody and destroyed the ship.

The ship is not a factor in winning.

Winning simply means defeating your opponent.

The absurdity of your rationale and reasoning here is you're contriving additional irrelevant criteria to fabricate this idea of yours.

A fight is between 2 living things. How a ship somehow determines the winner amazes me. I'd understand if the ship was being used as a weapon (e.g. Luffy smacking Hody with the Ship), but to arbitrarily use the fact that he decided to hit a large pile of wood after knocking out Hody as the determinant of why he won is simply shocking.

Again, your not LISTENING! I never said Luffy won his fight with Katakuri! I said those around him considered it a win and that's how I address it in my discussion!

I have been consistant, your just being ridiculous at this point
You're the one being genuinely ridiculous because of your absurd statement.

  • Luffy fights Hody = Zoro fights Kamazo.
  • Hody fatally injures Luffy meaning he will eventually lose consciousness = Kamazo fatally injures Zoro meaning he will eventually lose consciousness.
  • Luffy knocks out Hody and then loses consciousness = Zoro knocks out Kamazou and then loses consciousness.
Therein lies the absurdity of your statement. Only difference between them is Luffy decided to destroy a ship whereas Zoro didn't. Are you now saying that if Luffy had no ship to destroy, and then lost consciousness after knocking Hody out, it's a stalemate?

All that really fundamentally happened is Luffy stayed up longer before losing consciousness.
  • Is there some amount of time one must stay up before being declared the winner?
  • Is it the fact that he was destroying a ship before losing consciousness that determines him the winner here?
What does staying up or destroy a ship matter if your opponent has been incapacitated? How isn't it a victory at that point?

You are being ridiculous. So what if Luffy went on to destroy a ship after, all that means is he stayed up longer and did something else after knocking out Hody. Now your definition of winning a fight if you're injured fatally is that you do something/stay up for x-amount of time at minimum in order to be regarded as the victor?

Ironically, you say this in response to Sanji being criticised and you pull this stunt. I can only say wow and be in awe.

Does every fight need a ship thrown in, so that when one of the protagonists are severely injured and have knocked out their opponent, Oda needs to insert a ship for them to destroy, so that we can be a 100% sure they're the winner. Apparently, winner = knocked out opponent + a ship that has been damaged after the opponent is knocked out, lol.

Lol... There are many ways to come out with a win. Saving Hiyori and the smiling girl is already a win on it's own. Kinda like how saving Sanji and beating two sweet commanders can categorically be seen as a Luffy victory over the emperor, Bigmom. That's one.

Second... He completely knocked the guy unconscious, living his (the guy's) fate on his hands. He could've decided to decapitate him if he wanted at that moment, but he didn't because it was already over.

The assassin on the other hand was never in that position of authority. He was never in a position where the fate or life of Zoro was his to take or spare. The best chance he got, he took it. He attacked Zoro while he was busy with someone else. While in Zoro's case, there was no need to even attack him anymore because it was over.

Looking at this objectively without bias, it's definitely a clear win. Saying otherwise is a failed attempt at playing down Zoro's win, for whatever reason. Your arguments were pretty spot on.

Who brought up Hodi and Luffy anyway? That's a stupid comparison, and I think Lexus explained why. Most of Luffy's fights usually ended in him still standing and fighting until he was sure or made sure everyone was safe (Alabasta after saving Robin and Cobra). Although, I guess you can say that about all of the Straw Hats at the end of most fights.

Not at all stupid. To say Hody and Luffy's fight is not fundamentally similar to Zoro and Kamazo's fight is what's absurd.

Making sure people are okay has nothing to do with winning. Could win a fight and still fail to protect. Protecting people is a completely different matter. That's not at all related to what determines the winner or loser in a fight.

Luffy/ Hody cannot be compared to Zoro/Kaimouzo. If you cannot see why they are different I have nothing else to say to you.

I even went as far as to say I'll back down and your continuing to be on the offensive when there is no need to be.

Luffy was DONE fighting Hody and went on to attack the ship. That is what put him over the edge and caused him to collapse. He overexhurted himself instead of getting his wound taken care of. If there was no ship, Luffy would have just gotten bandaged up instead of allowing himself to bleed out.

Zoro got tagged, cut his dude, but passed out moments later.

Fundamentally different scenario

It can be definitely compared.

Only difference is there's a ship and the ship is absolutely irrelevant.

A ship doesn't determine whether someone has won a fight or not. What people do after an opponent is definitely downed has nothing to do with how the winner is determined.

What determines the winner of a fight is who knocks out their opponent or who gets their opponent to admit defeat or give up.

I even went as far as to say I'll back down and your continuing to be on the offensive when there is no need to be.
You responded to me and I responded back. How is that being on the offensive?

This is absolutely false.

Hody bit Luffy.

He's only bleeding because he has been bitten.

He collapsed because he was haemorrhaging.

Zoro got tagged, cut his dude, but passed out moments later.

Nope, absolutely wrong.

Just like Zoro got tagged, Luffy also got tagged. It's the exact same thing.

Luffy even says his Haki isn't strong enough to protect from attacks like that.

He continued bleeding as the fight progressed.

He was going bleed until he was unconscious anyway. The cause of the bleeding isn't because he punched the Noah, it's because of the bite. It's not exactly a skin deep bite by Hody, it's a bite that cut deep into his flesh from the raw strength of a Shark on steroids.

No different to Zoro who continued bleeding until the fight was concluded.

You're making exceptions.

So if there was no Noah, and he defeated Hody, even with the bite wound... He would have just continued to bleed without getting bandaged up?

Really?

You think luffy would have just been like, "Nope, let me bleed out?"

The presence of Noah stopped him from getting help immediately after defeating Hody.

The arguement was never if Luffy would bleed out. It was that without over exerting himself with stopping Noah, it would have never come down to him passing out because he would have gotten bandaged up.

No exceptions are being made, you just cant seem to grasp why the 2 fights are different

No, comparing both is absurd. Luffy didn't become unconscious because of the fight, he lost consciousness because he lost too much blood trying to break up Noah. Zoro lost his consciousness after being stabbed by Manslayer, he'd have fainted either way. Luffy fainted because he exerted himself too much after the fight.

Sure, the enemies deal the injury that Zoro and Luffy got that caused them to faint, but that's the only thing they have in common. Prove to me Luffy wouldn't have fainted if he didn't try to wreck Noah despite his injury, or that Zoro wouldn't have fainted unless he continued to exert himself. You're better off comparing Luffy vs. Lucci, Luffy vs. Moria, or Luffy vs. Doflamingo, where Luffy went down because of the fight, if not because of injuries sustained.

The ship didnt affect the outcome of Noah's fight, but it did affect the outcome after he defeated Hody. He did attempt to stop Noah, and that exertion resulted in more bleeding.
What is there to disagree in that?

Are we going back to the topic of power levels. Or still gauging each other's validity of what constitute as a win....

Well, Luffy and Zoro both won their fights, the fact that they fainted afterwards doesn't change anything...
I don't know what the initial purpose of the discussion was anyway. Trying to gauge Luffy and Zoro's respective strengths by comparing fights after which they fainted? Or trying to establish that Zoro fainting, even though HE CLEARLY WON before, is somewhat more shameful for him than Luffy fainting after the Hody Jones final? Meh, maybe, honestly I am having trouble reading the real strength of Wano's native fighters thus far. It's easier to gauge strength when you have ranking among crew (YC for instance), bounty, or a fighting history with famously strong individuals to rely upon... I have no real idea how strong that mankiller guy was in the first place. Neither do I know how strong the bridgeguardian is, nor do I know for how long Zoro was fighting against him. So defeating the former while being attacked by the latter could be some kind of feat.

Hahaha... Nope! It's neither of what you thought (bolded text).
The claim was that Zoro didn't win in the first place, which isn't true because he clearly won.
If the argument was about what you thought, it would've made more sense.

Noah is irrelevant, look what Hody says - his attack already took a toll on Luffy. Luffy literally did one Gatling attack after taking out Hody, that wasnt what determined if he lost enough blood or not, blood loss was severe already before he took Hody out.

Luffy's condition at the same page where he takes out Hody.

Nope, you're wrong.

He lost blood because he was bitten by Hody. It wasn't the Noah that made him bleed, thus this argument is stupidly absurd to say it's of a different context to Zoro.

Luffy is already bleeding before Noah.

Still bleeding before Noah.

Still bleeding before Noah.

It's silly that Noah is being blamed for his bleeding when he was bleeding before Noah was even relevant.

Zoro lost his consciousness after being stabbed by Manslayer, he'd have fainted either way. Luffy fainted because he exerted himself too much after the fight.
Don't need a medical degree to know that any serious injury would bleed more if there's any exertion. By this ridiculous point, I could as well just blame Zoro's losing consciousness to the fact he exerted himself too.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

Easy, he was bleeding before Noah, lol.

Prove to me that Zoro won't have lost consciousness without exerting himself by performing Onigiri? You can't.

Bad argument.

Fact is they were both bleeding, can't tell what would happen, you can only choose what you want to believe. Only fact we have is both were bleeding seriously.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

I don't know what the initial purpose of the discussion was anyway.
Basically, because Sanji's fight was critically assessed.

Seems Sanji sympathisers got upset and decided to look for an imaginary needle in a haystack they could cling on to, and this was birthed. The needle being the ingenious idea that winning a fight is more than knocking out your opponent in a duel. Apparently a duel is comprised of an opponent and ship that serves as the excuse for any injuries incurred.

If only Zoro had a ship that could be blamed for his injury, he'd be considered the winner despite the fact he knocked Kamazo out cold. :feelsbadman

With this new 2019 reveal of the official definition of winning that has been kept secret for centuries, I question, did Kaido really defeat Luffy? There was no ship involved.

Luffy was also punching the ship when Shirahoshi mentioned his wound ailing him. There's also implication that Luffy's wounds are as bloody as it is because he was trying to stop the ship from destroying the island, and he fainted after knowing the island was safe. Even though the wounds from Hodi was affecting Luffy, he didn't show any sign of fainting until he knew Fishman Island and everyone were completely safe, and it can be argued that he fainted only because of the exertion against the ship as that'd have caused him to lose more blood.

Anyway, this debate is boring and repetitive. Comparison is still dumb and makes no sense when Luffy was still exerting energy and didn't faint until he knew the ship wouldn't put the people on Fishman Island in danger. Zoro fainted even though Gyukimaru could have changed his mind and finished off Zoro or attack the girls, or Hiyori had another assassin after her. Both Zoro and Luffy still won as they finished off their opponents and were still standing.

I wanna know just what Robin, Brook, and Franky are capable of. Don't think we've seen them go all out, and they each have advantages that imply they're far stronger/more capable than they've let on since their appearance, especially after the timeskip. Franky went head-to-head with Senor Pink and won, but what if he wasn't trying to have a hardboiled, man fight? What if he fought smarter? What did Robin learn under Dragon that can help her in fights, assuming she did? Can she use CoA? And if so, can she use it on the body parts that she grows? But then again, if she could use CoA, then she would have defended herself against Diamante's raining spikes rather than take the injuries. CoA would be immensely useful for her as she's a mid-range fighter (long range too?) with a devil fruit that lets her fight as if she's close range.

He lost blood because he was bitten by Hody. It wasn't the Noah that made him bleed, thus this argument is stupidly absurd to say it's of a different context to Zoro.
That alone makes me realize there's no point in reading any further or arguing when you'll twist what I said or make up your own interpretation. I never said Noah made him bleed, it just made him bleed out even worse than he would have if he just relaxed. It's why Chopper yells at his patients to not move or keep the bandages on, so they don't aggravate their wounds more or bleed more.

Even though the wounds from Hodi was affecting Luffy, he didn't show any sign of fainting until he knew Fishman Island and everyone were completely safe, and it can be argued that he fainted only because of the exertion against the ship as that'd have caused him to lose more blood.
Zoro also never looked like he was going to faint, he only fainted after he'd defeated Kamazo. No one predicted Zoro losing consciousness because they never thought it'd have that much impact.

Luffy at no point looked like he was going to faint, he only fainted after he no longer had to deal with the ship.

No one looks like they're going to faint until they've done everything they need to do. Luffy never looks like he's going to faint. If Luffy had to stay up for 2 minutes longer to destroy Noah, he would have. He only lost consciousness because he'd done what he needed to do.

So, just because he never looked like fainting initially is irrelevant.
