Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

Sanji is only one taken down someone formidable being Page One. If a T6H couldn't make Sanji struggle, a YC being Queen or King are his future.

He will. I don't Mama will get best exchange while Amnesia. Don't think she go down, but could be trick and captured easily by Queen and others due to her state atm.
high hopes for your favorite character but very unrealistic.

Seeing how much stronger Luffy was and still is when he fought a Commander of Cracker scale.

If we pair Sanji with Zoro's opponents back in the story I think the cook would be the one to get cooked. Their opponents only have the illusion of being of similar strength. The biggest illusion is Kaku and Jabra, Kaku's combat style is far more dangerous than Jabra's who also got silly personality and giving free chances to Sanji to hit him, like the scene with the key.

Sanji vs Mr.1 back in Alabasta - what can Sanji do against such opponent?
Sanji vs Kaku back in Enies Lobby - how will he survive the onslaught of 4 sword style?
Sanji vs Ryuma back in Thriller Bark - how will he avoid becoming minced meat?
Sanji vs Pica in Dressrosa - what can he do to even drive Pica out of stone form?

Just to be clear, i am talking about Doriki...

Lucci was 4000
Kaku was 2200
Jabra was 2180

I dont like to use this as evidence of strengths but it is evidence that Zoro and Sanji fought people who are nearly the same level of strength.
But it's consistent with the series. Also with Zoro being stated as second strongest in the databooks.

@Barrier I'd advice you quit lying. You want to claim I never spoke about narratives? Okay sure.
I didn't lie.
And while you claim that Luffy can't do anything, Fujitora has stated that he can defeat the Yonko. So, your statement is somewhat baseless as it's not backed up by any facts, but an opinion that isn't supported by any information from the Manga.
This is the quote where all the argument started. I want you to read that and see if you agree with that now. You said it is a manga fact and so it should be true. However, we know it isn't.

If we go by what the characters say, then does that mean Pica was strong enough to crush both navy and pirates on his own? A group that consists of Luffy, Zoro, Law, Fujitora, and Sabo. It doesn't make sense. I would have said the same thing back then but I would never have had manga facts to back it up.

You imply Fujitora is a liar, but I'd rather take his assessment of Luffy over your opinion.
We never called Fuji a liar, we always thought of his words describing Luffy's potential.

Also, your logic is pretty non-existent here. It's like saying that because Rob Lucci tanked and defended against Gear 2nd attacks, he shouldn't have been able to get knocked out by it.
This was another one of your point. Lucci also tanked gear 2 like BM did against gear 4, does that Lucci couldn't be defeated? Then you showed us this picture of Vergo blocking with haki.
However, wasn't the image provided by yourself enough proof that even if you manage to make someone block with haki it doesn't mean you will win. Tashigi lost that fight. Outclassed but Vergo still used haki to protect himself. Just like Luffy v BM scenario.

And now what you reply is by saying that Oda could have created a similar scenario to Wano and could have made Luffy defeat BM. However, that did not happen, hence why we say you were wrong about Luffy defeating BMP physically.

About narrative point of view. The reason I ignore that is because like i said before, in every manga that narrative factor is present. The main characters always gets something out of every arc, because plot progression. So you were right by saying BMP were defeated narratively in WCI but then you went further and said how they will be defeated and that's were you were wrong. SHs won because of Morgans.

How unrealistic? Your reading same thing as me. He defeated Page One. He need a tougher challenge which be YCs. Why you think farfetched when Sanji and Zoro (After he retrain himself) are destined to be Luffy's YCs since he is the 'Fifth Yonko'.

Because your reaching a bit. or simply skipping over, the gaps that they both have to overcome.

Will Zoro & Sanji be able to defeat YC; Yes. Can they at this current point in the story? No. Are they going to defeat a YC or fight with 1 during this arc...We don't know. But i believe everyone is hopeful that it happens.

P1 fight is almost one of the worst fights in One Piece. simply, for the reason Sanji needed that screen time of fighting at a new level, not having any 1 v 1 panel time & to show how strong these F6H, really are. Sanji has his win, but the win has no feats to highlight, or a solid benchmark in Power for either opponent...It also seems that Sanji didn't even have to go all out; which leads me to believe he injured P1, but probably not that badly, but he did win. Either way it was a bad idea to off panel that fight.

My point being. Sanji & Zoro at max, Are like a Doffy lv threat, in terms of power. The Gap between that and A low ranking YC, is big. I can't phantom any kind of writing that is gonna propel their talents to fight with High YC.

Theorizing on The idea is more entertaining than just blurting out they'll fight these strong guys, that We know some power up is coming to defeat them. Rather boring no???

How are our untitled SH commanders boring to reach this LV? Luffy has G4 Power + Speed to make him a low YC threat; Add Improved Haki, he's climbing to HC..Low Emperor lv.....

Can Sanji with science alone reach these lv's or does he still need to train & also raise his Haki usage...

As for Zoro, does he need a rarer blade? New Swordsman technique? Does he master a form of CoA to cut even denser objects, & ppl?

I didn't lie.
Well, then it's one of 3 things.

Either You:
  • Lie (knowing what I said but saying otherwise)
  • Misinformed (Have the wrong information)
  • or/and Confused (Think you know what I said, but didn't actually say).
It's abundantly clear what I said, I showed it to you, so for you to say things I didn't say in light of evidence. You pick your poison.

The quote where the argument started? I don't recall, but I'll oblige you.

There's this thing called context and reading between the lines.

Pica's ability is to manipulate his surroundings.

His power is such that he can kill an entire country all alone, that's simply a fact.

His ability is ideal to take on the entire country since the goal it to take down both Navy and Pirates.

As long as he hides underneath the rock, he's nigh untouchable.

Does that mean he's as strong as an Admiral? No, simply means he's an opponent that could is difficult to deal with.

Pica was absolutely correct, nonetheless wasn't claiming to be stronger. In context with his DF powers and given how little is truly known about Fujitora, Pica would be an issue for anyone. He'd kill lots of people easily with his powers.

More so, Pica isn't an important character. It wouldn't take much to simply deduce that he just overstimates his strength when even Joker would struggle to do so. This gives more credence to the contextual idea he's saying this based on his DF powers which is justified with probably an aspect of underestimating his opponents. Context.

Also, you're being terribly dishonest in this aspect, I'm sure you know that what a character says has more weight than others depending on context.
  • If Crocodile states he can defeat Whitebeard, we know that's just bravado talking, it's nonsensical.
  • If Kid says he'll become Pirate King over Luffy, we know that's nonsense.
  • If some random relatively no-name character says they'll defeat an Emperor or Admiral, we know they're just being delusional or overestimating their own abilities.
  • If Kizaru says Weevil is as powerful as Whitebeard in his prime physically, we know his words hold tremendous weight.
  • So, when Fujitora says what he believes about Luffy, it holds tremendous weight.
I know you're intelligent enough to read between the lines, but you're trying to find technicalities to use to justify you logical fallacies here.

We never called Fuji a liar, we always thought of his words describing Luffy's potential.
Sure you did.

"I can tell you have got the strength to back your words up."

That's not the same thing as saying "I can tell you will have the strength to back those words up"

Do you know the difference between "You Have" and "You Will Have"? One is present tense, and one is future tense.

So, tell me exactly how you knew Fujitora was talking about potential which is a future tense? Did you have a translation that differed? Or a raw that said otherwise?

You have nothing to showcase.

The best thing you could have possibly stated was this, but you didn't even do that, you brought up Pica who was saying something truthful if one simply took the time to see the context.

The best thing that could have been said was Fujitora was agreeing with Luffy's strength in regard to challenging the Emperors in the sense of not having to run away which would mean he's strong enough to challenge them.

And being strong enough to challenge them is all that's necessary especially since he's the protagonist who unlike other characters has the ability to power-up whenever the plot necessitates.

This was another one of your point. Lucci also tanked gear 2 like BM did against gear 4, does that Lucci couldn't be defeated? Then you showed us this picture of Vergo blocking with haki.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you're twisting what I said once again, not surprised. I didn't say it's proof for defeating, I said proof for hurting.

Keyword: HURT

I said just because an attack is blocked doesn't mean if it's not blocked, it won't hurt.

So, what is untrue about that?

Blocking an attack isn't proof it can't hurt you.

And now what you reply is by saying that Oda could have created a similar scenario to Wano and could have made Luffy defeat BM. However, that did not happen, hence why we say you were wrong about Luffy defeating BMP physically.
Irrelevant.

Has nothing to do with it not happening.

It's to do with IF he wanted.

Wano is no different to WCI in relation to the strength gap, if not bigger.

All Oda had to do to make Luffy strong enough to defeat was a power-up, and that's what he's doing here.

Your point is moot.

However, that did not happen, hence why we say you were wrong about Luffy defeating BMP physically.

The arc couldn't progress without a SH victory. It was a SH victory.

If it wasn't a territorial defeat against Big Mom, it'd have had to be a physical defeat. You couldn't refute this statement right here.

Unlike you, my reasons were all justified and proven in the end; yours were short-sighted, lacked insight and was simply based on "Big Mom is a Yonko".

Unlike you, I was right that Oda needed a victory for the SHs for reasons I gave which were all justified in the end. If it wasn't a territorial victory, the other option was a physical defeat.
  • Do you know what else proves my point? The fact that Oda literally took Big Mom out of the arc in order to justify the lack of engagement between the 2.

What was yours? Nothing propagated nothing.

Did you make any reasons why Luffy's defeat progressed the story? No, you probably didn't and you probably didn't have any good reasons.

The best you can do is point out petty details whereas I got almost everything about the arc right because my reasoning was well justified by my understanding of the story and how it was developing and how it has developed.

About narrative point of view. The reason I ignore that is because like i said before, in every manga that narrative factor is present.
Nope, your answer there was rather poor because you failed to even understand that.

Huge difference between stating why something needs to happen in an arc and what happens ultimately. Your insight was just poor.

Anyone can claim that Luffy will become Pirate King by the end of the series, not exactly rocket science, requires no insight. It however requires insight to state why a victory is needed or the lack thereof for the propagation of the story.

If Katakuri wasn't Luffy's opponent in WCI, it'd have been Big Mom, and if Big Mom was his opponent, she'd have been defeated because every arc needs to end as a victory, that is simply a fact for the SHs and for anyone who has followed this story keenly.

Ultimately, anyone who claimed that Big Mom wouldn't be defeated because she's too strong was wrong. The reason she wasn't defeated physically was not due to strength, but due to the fact her defeat wasn't yet necessary.
  • If what I'm saying here is wrong. Then if we use your godly logic here, then Luffy should also lose to Kaido. If you claim Kaido will be defeated, but claim Big Mom couldn't be defeated, you're ultimately a hypocrite.

This is exactly what I am saying. I want to explain but I have spend too much time on you, only to be called a liar, intellectual liar, dishonest, and a hypocrite. Don't know why I bother tbh.

That is ultimately the truth.

What was the reason why Big Mom couldn't be defeated in WCI?

Was it plot reasons you brought up? No.

It was literally, Luffy can't hurt here, therefore he can't defeat her.

If I'm wrong, I'll gladly concede.

Where did you state that Big Mom couldn't be defeated for other reasons that had nothing to do with strength?

Yes because Luffy was not strong enough to defeat her. And second, not enough allies on his side. Kaido is different because he has more allies. Even now I don't think Luffy can take on Kaido by himself. There are others who will help him take on Kaido.

Yes because Luffy was not strong enough to defeat her.
It was simply because she was strong. No insight whatsoever.

And second, not enough allies on his side.
This is absolute false, lol. We both know Luffy can easily gain allies easily. He made allies. He had allies. Not enough allies, but they held off the Big Mom Pirates for how many hours? From 1am up until the early mornings, so let's say 5-6 hours of fighting without Luffy, Sanji, Nami, Brook, Jimbei, Chopper, etc.

Even now I don't think Luffy can take on Kaido by himself. There are others who will help him take on Kaido.
Yet, you think that Luffy will be able to hurt Kaido, though, right?

Let's pretend going from being able to not hurt Kaido to even do that is not even a huge power-up in itself.

Kaido is different because he has more allies.
Wrong again bud.

Having allies won't break Kaido's armour. Having allies makes it possible to take on Kaido while they fight the rest.

Only those with the strongest Haki can break through his armour, otherwise, he's not feeling a thing.

Gear 4th pounded him and he didn't feel a thing.
  • The same thing Big Mom blocked, the same thing that sent Katakuri reeling, the same thing that Cracker only got hit once by and the same thing Joker got hit by 5 times before being defeated.
So, like I said, you had no narrative reasons, no foresight as to the implications, nothing whatsoever other than she's strong. Despite everything we know about the series, but apparently, reading the story with narrative context is not how to read a story.

The one thing you can't criticise is my reasoning because it's the basis for the conclusions I came to. Your reasoning was literally non-existent, yet you want to criticise my reasoning when yours in comparison was a lot worse given that it was not even relevant?

My point is proven.

Not really if you seen his performance and it's clearly he is expected to do big things if he can easily defeat a T6H. Idk why your denying him doing more than he can as Sanji can take serious threats before.

Well Luffy said it seriously he will face Kaido last chapter, so he isn't going to run away or anything and take him head-on. Though of course since it's a Yonko, he probably have help more while YCs could be taken on one on one by Sanji and Zoro to be there with their captain taking bigger threats too.

Whether off-screen or on-screen it still happened and the reason it was like that so Oda doesn't show everything about RS about it. Your overacting a bit on seeing it bad idea when it's not as OP off-screen fights before and characters can still be hype about it like other characters been through. PO is down for the count as so far we been through the chapters, not a hint he is still around or active at all and show heavily hinted more he is K.O. looking at environment and characters like Drake X and Hawkins by themselves doing work without him.

Just because he is using RS, doesn't mean he isn't strong without it as he still is and continue training without the RS on and more. He is using it like Zoro uses his swords as it's the user, not the equipment to give you skill and power as Sanji still using his own power and speed end of the day when fighting.

They still got days until days until the final battle, so it's possible for both Sanji and Zoro to get stronger and train just like Luffy. Doesn't need to be on-screen every moment to know about it or show how strong they are. Thinking your overthinking on judging how things will be just because you need ot see it alone.

Why are you talking about predictions of what will happen in the future like they are facts?

Also, what is this discussion about Luffy being able to defeat Big Mom or not? Of course Luffy couldn't defeat Big Mom. Just like with Kaido, Luffy wouldn't be able to hurt her, and would be defeated instantly. And unlike Kaido, she wouldn't let Luffy live hoping she could recruit him.

How about ZOro vs Buggy?
Zoro would win with his fists.

Let him live in his delusion.

Fujitora said Luffy has the strength to back up his statement, but he didn't know at the time that Luffy stood no chance against Big Mom, nearly lost to Katakuri (who likely chose to lose), and got one-shot by Kaidou. :lmao
If Fujitora saw Luffy against either Yonkou, he'd have retracted his statement.

We'll see. He could have help from several others for all we know, and I hope he does. If he does beat Kaidou on his own though, then he's definitely an Emperor (perhaps replaces Kaidou) and should theoretically be able to beat Big Mom when he's at full health and strength.

@King Moe Sorry for quoting your post. your absolutely right, on everything you wrote. You understand the story a certain way, I can't debate with. I don't get why? Or how you've responded to my post with what you wrote. You see one piece how you see it, kool. I Can't argue/debate on that. So I'll let you just be for now on mate. cheers & enjoy.

Anywho's..Sanji's RS does not put him on YC lv. It'll be a great assist, to Sanji achieving such power. But some type or form of advance Haki seems to be a key ingredient in One Piece stronger characters. I doubt some adjustments from Franky & Usopp either powers him up that much.

As for Zoro, every time I re-read that chapter or see the panels of Zoro fainting, im highly annoyed. Zoro, needs a bad ass new sword & like the stronger dude's Some advance haki. Before he can fight any YC also.

I rlly dont like Wano Arc. Personally I think Oda has a lot to deliver. 2 Yonkou crews & a strong country. That's a lot of enemies, & I miss the whole SH Gang taking on the other Pirates crewmates...Chopper needs some gifter, & smile users bodies, along with Brooke, Franky,Nami & Robin...With Luffy wiping the floor somewhat with a a few F6 headliners. W Zoro, Sanji, Law & others taking out the rest...

Then a Top tier battle with Luffy vs Kaidou & Sanji & Zoro vs Queen & King.

I find it hard to believe Luffy is going to surpass Kaido. He will have a lot of help, find a weakness, or something. But the series is not over yet, Luffy cannot defeat the strongest creature alive on his own. He still has to fight the other Yonko, Admirals, etc.

I find it hard to believe any of the main SH taking out the big shots of this arc. A lot of power ups are gonna be handed out. But How? is the question

We can happily agree to disagree, I don't mind, but it have to make sense on both our sides of course. Good debating with you, dude.

It won't be just RS, he be training too and looking past chapters, we don't see much Sanji and makes me wonder if he is training off-screen and modification to his RS is happening right now with Usopp and Franky. There gonna be a mixture of a lot of things to his power from his own and modify RS so he can fight better his own style instead of how his family fights. His Haki won't be far behind though as surely he be there with Luffy and Zoro training it as well.

Zoro does need retraining for sure as him fainting was like a big slap to the face of many especially Zoro fans on praising him to have the 'most durability', but now guess we can no longer count pre-timeskip as facts as before in NW they train differently and still need more training to boot.

Why not liking it? It's still setting up as Oda always do set-ups before we go heavy on action and fighting. That just him and it always turn out great in the end. You got it more of a chance before thinking it's going bad or so.

I do see how things are going with matchups for their final battles, but it looking more that Zoro could face Orochi as his final opponent than King as he with Hiyori's side right now and he will be after them and also now after Yasu who is the father of the little girl, so it's preparing more for Zoro vs Orochi face off in the future. Think Law will be the one to face King himself since he need something to show more of what he is capable off since and to redeem since losing to Doflamingo. Beating YC and assisting Luffy and Kidd facing Kaido will help with that and establish him still a rival to PK Throne with them.
