Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

eehh to say somewhat no harm, they had law to bail them out of trouble a lot , and 2 of the strongest have been defeated

the supernovas weren't really on par, they were getting their shit kicked in relatively but they did good overall, multiple defats and knockouts

we had te straw hats essentially magically power up with 0 EXPLANATTIONS
also within on arc , luffy went from about par to crackr to close to katakuri
Law was good for dodging/teleporting away but his attacks were annoyance to the Yonko. They did little to no harm to them.

The Straw Hats outside of Luffy Zolo and Sanji power ups were bullshit I agree. How was Robin able to compete with a 480m bounty who maybe was on par with Page One who gave Sanji some trouble. Or Franky able to take down Sasaki who seemed confident enough to battle a YC. Maybe we just overhyped the F6 and thought they were stronger than they looked.
Even so, I was disappointed with how easy their fights seem, I was expecting more of an uphill battle for the SHs vs F6, not a quick duel.
then again the SHs are probably the only ones who deserve magical power ups since they are the Protagonists of the story not Law or Kid even if fans love them so much.

WCI Luffy is a great power up explanation and I hoped more arcs were like that. At the beginning Luffy was struggling with a YC3, the first YC the SHs experienced. Then within the same arc we see Luffy defeat a YC1, although it may seem like a quick power up, we actually see Luffy learning and gaining experience through battle. At the end, even the outcome seemed murky and many fans, including myself, give Katakuri the win. Luffy was still not YC1 level.

At the start of Wano Luffy is still not YC1, so it bothered the crap out of me to see Luffy train only train no actual battles, get strong enough to damage Kaido in their first rooftop battle. It bothered me because we saw how BM vs Queen went and Kaido vs Luffy before the rooftop. We saw how big the gap was from Yonko and YC1. We saw how Luffy struggled versus Kata and now hes "on par" with Kaido currently. That bothers me on how quick of a power gap he jumped, when normally its not like that. I think I would prefer Luffy had fought another YC level opponent before Kaido.

Luffy was not YC1 but outside of future sight he could somewhat hang with katakuri , especially in gear 4
Luffy was no competition at all for kaido , they didn’t even seem in the same realm

If you measured everyone powerlevels when the Wano arc started, it would seem they don't stand a chance against the enemy:

Luffy: 1,000
Law: 900
Kid: 900
Zoro: 500
Sanji: 500
Killer: 450
Franky: 250
Robin: 250

Kaido: 4,500
Big Mom: 4,500
King: 1,000
Queen: 1,000
Hawkins: 800
Sasaki: 400
Black Maria: 400

However, if you measured it again when they started fighting their opponents, you would find out they all got stronger:

Luffy: 4,000
Law: 3,600
Kid: 3,600
Zoro: 1,000
Sanji: 1,000
Killer: 900
Franky: 500
Robin: 500

Characters getting stronger is normal in Shonen... it's just a bit weird that it happened to so many characters, at the same time.

But One Piece has always been like that... the Straw Hats got stronger after Arabasta or Ennies Lobby, all of them. It was also convenient how all of them trained during the time-skip, and how the ranking did not change.

Law being mid miffed by doffy isn’t relevant at all on the least , that happened 300 chapters ago , we read one piece we see how much stronger protagonists , Strawhats got world stronger from alabasta to ennies lobby and that was just 200 chapters ( and law is essentially a protagonist now )
I’d take either of them over katakuri and king
I see Marco as YC1+ and Rayleigh prime as more admiral level
Well Group fights and tag teams don't tell you how characters would perform in 1v1 situations.......Law's last 1v1 encounter was Doflamingo that's why its referenced.....What makes Marco YC1+? No YC1 is a cut above the rest their all relative . Marco may have fought King and Queen at the same time, but knowing what we know now, that's hardly a feat anymore. King has been fighting in Base for 99% of Onigashima and Queen wasn't even in Hybrid. YC1 plus is for characters like Sabo, Luffy who we know are above the commanders but not sure where they stand against admirals and yonko by themselves, Between the 1st commanders and the Yonko/Admirals.

You're right people grow stronger after arcs. Law got defeated by Doffy YC3 in Dressrosa. There's just no proof that he became this strong YC1, no training no explanation of whatsoever, so for readers who like logic (and dont say there is no logic in OP, this aint Fairy Tail) we want to see consistency. It's hard to imagine Law got that strong now. The rooftop fight was downplayed by Oda to make the power levels in the story make more sense. He hyped up the Yonko and now we see 5 Yc3-YC1 people able to fend off and somewhat harm them. It downplayed the Yonko in my eyes. I would understand if it was only 1 Yonko but 2? Ridiculous.

But yea, we saw how Zolo was the only one outside of Luffy actually damage Kaido. Law did to Kaido and BM what maybe Raizo did to Kaido or the rest of the 9RS damage did to Kaido. It was nothing to Kaido unlike Luffy and Zolo's attacks.

Oda wants Law and Kid to be with Luffy but hes doing a bad job at it. We literally had no idea how strong Kid was, he managed to hurt a Sweet Commander we have no idea which one, my best guess was Snack. Back to Law, last time we saw him go all out was with Doffy and he got trashed but now he is able to damage a Yonko, bullshit.
Oda shouldve had build up fights for Law, Zolo, and Kid and maybe even Luffy. Not this bullshit imaginary power up asspull. The only build up fight we saw in Wano was Sanji vs Page One and we didnt even see the outcome...
I do see your point, and somewhat agree with it. Powerscaling in OP isn't as bad as FT, but it is still pretty bad. Characters get strong randomly for no reason at all, all the time!

Zoro < Doflamingo in Dresrossa arc, Doffy is YC 2-3 level
Zoro >= King currently
No massive training, nothing. He just got stronger, that's it. And no, getting Enma doesn't explain this jump.

Sanji <= Vergo, and << Doflamingo in Dresrossa arc
Currently, Sanji, even without raid suit and Germa biology, was holding his own against Queen, someone >= Doflamingo
Still, he is the only character, apart from Luffy, who has shown reasons to get a big powerspike, with his Raid suit and Germa biology awakening.

And lets not forget the massive powerups the Straw Hats got in between W7 and Enies Lobby arc, out of nowhere!! Luffy at least got gear 2 and 3 that arc, even though it did come out of nowhere. But Zoro randomly got stronger than Kaku as well.

So yea, Law and Kid got stronger off screen. Yes there is no explanation and it doesn't make much sense. But it is what it is. At least their DF awakened, yea not exactly convincing, but hey, at least it is something. Better than them taking down a Yonko without these

Yep. "Relevant" characters get stronger over the arcs all the time.
I do understand the confusion in fanbase, since we didn't really see Law getting stronger or train on screen. The powerup are not necessarily convincing or really make logical sense all the time, but this is how Oda writes,
I guess people are only used to seeing the strawhats getting randomly stronger lol

I would put current Law and Kid >= King and Katakuri

Marco and Rayleigh are moreso special cases among YC1s, they were the right hand men of the strongest pirates who had ever existed (from what we know).
Marco is borderline admiral tier. And peak Rayleigh is borderline Yonko tier (since his old and rusty self would give Kizaru extreme diff, also because of parallels to Luffy/Zoro relative portrayals)
Kid and Law will surpass Marco in the future, but not yet IMO. Not sure about Rayleigh though.

Lol at Kaido/BM being 4 and a half times as strong as King.

Also Zoro could not have logically blocked 9000 if he was only 1000. 7.5x power is normally a one-shot according to vs debating community.

Remember he didn't even use his hybrid against Marco.

Hybrid form >> Zoan form. If King could hold his own with Marco in zoan form and cut off his wing and tank his kick attack with minimal damage in human form, in his much stronger hybrid form he should be on Marco's level, if not above...

Law and Kid more than 3x Zoro? No way.

Zoro is definitely in Law/Kid tier, arguably even stronger

Purely looking at portrayal itself, Marco > King purely because he was WB's right hand man, and WB was said to have the strongest crew

Currently, feats wise, Marco mid-high diffs King.
But, we'll see. Maybe this hybrid form will change things in the future.

I don't know. King has a higher bounty and he kicked off BM's ship with her on it in his zoan form with a no-name attack while Marco kicked the ship without her on it in his hybrid form with a named attack.

I definitely think King is stronger than Marco in his Hybrid form.

Look at how big a power-up it was for Lucci and Kaido. Heck even Yamato.

Ehh, there is a difference between being somewhat off, and being wildly off lol.

Your numbers made it seem like Kid and Law would stomp/low diff Zoro, King, Sanji etc

We seriously need to make tiers for One piece if that can even work anymore.

Because Oda this arc *%%** up!

It stems from having I guess false notions about WB vs Admirals & his commanders vs Admirals….Still yet shit ain’t adding up in Wano arc

Big Mom is said to be an nigh invulnerable tank; She’s lived up to that but her power output for a Emperor isn’t very threatening.
-Jimbei survives Congac
-Queen only briefly K.O
-Killer survives Indura arrow & multiple Shocks
-Kidd survives multiple attacks
-Page1 K.O by COC Punch
-Ulti briefly K.O after combo homie attack

Kaido Strongest creature; Can’t be killed?

- Tanks G4 assault &1Shots luffy after WCI
-Scabbards hurt him & Lightly damage him on Roof
- Luffy Red rocks him
-Suffers but tanks damage from all SN
-Killer’s Sound scythe; Zoro’s Black twister & COC attack; Law’s Radio Knife & injection shot & Kidd’s barrage.
-Luffy tanks Boro breathes & pummels him; Luffy is Briefly K.O, attacks with COC & again is K.O
-Yamamoto only got in 1 good hit, Kaido is just beating Yamamoto’s ass

Does it matter that Big MoM was Abnormaly skinny & on a hunger tantrum?
Or if Big Mom had amnesia?
Or Zoro dropped killer but Big Mom hasn’t?
Or Ulti not a commander, Yes a Zoan, keeps getting back up from strong opponents?

Does it matter Luffy FS didn’t work because he was mad so he got 1 hit k.o
Does it matter that the Scabbards knew Ryu or Kaido was having a small breakdown as to why he was injured…

What exactly matters to the story anymore?? Or should I just accept when someone is shown stronger than someone else..

How is this conclusive? I honestly don't really care who's stronger, though I'm sure Vados is arguing King is just because he's Zoro's opponent. I'm curious is all, because Marco was unable to take out King, just as King and Queen were unable to take out Marco.

That's 100% why Vados thinks he's stronger. And read the last part of your sentence. Marco was fighting both King and Queen, King not fully taking out Marco is more of an indictment on him than vice versa.

I think the biggest error in the powerscalling, is because Oda put too much gap between YC and Doflamingo. And after between Yankou and YC.

Doflamingo during submit war was a powerhouse playing with the YC of White Beard, and having fun during all fight.
Then in WCI he became a feeble guy who should not stand face any YC.... Just to make the fight for Luffy more impossible and grow more hype from his next opponent.

Logicly after Dressarosa, a YC1 should not have been a such difficult fight for Luffy (outside future sight).
And Oda should'nt make Yonkou OS commanders as if their was just teash... Those guys were depicted to be able to stall admiral (not beat them)...

That would have made the gap between Law to Big Mom, or Sanji and Queen, less asspull than they are...

Marco fought King and Queen alone for hours, while also expending his flames to heal up thousands of allies soldiers. And the dude is still up and running, taking a back seat only because he wants the strawhats to take the spotlight (his own words)
I think this alone should indicate that Marco is stronger than King by a decent margin.

Apart from that, he fought Kizaru for a while in even terms, and matched attacks from angry Akainu intended to kill Luffy.
The dude is borderline admiral tier.

He also has been the right hand man of the strongest pirate for quite a while (better portrayal than being right hand man of Kaido), who was said to have the strongest crew back during Marineford IIRC

The only thing King has going on for him is the higher bounty, but bounty is not just a function of power, but also of violence/threat level. Marco is retired, and was a calm and relatively non violent pirate to begin with, which is likely why his bounty is lower.
I'm 100% sure Katakuri > Queen, but Queen has much higher bounty.
Same with Zoro in Shabody, he had the 2nd lowest bounty among supernova, but was the 3rd or 4th strongest. Kid also had higher bounty than Luffy, IIRC explained in the series itself as because he un-necessarily starts fights and gets overly violent.

All things considered, IMO Marco mid-high diffs King

That's 100% why Vados thinks he's stronger. And read the last part of your sentence. Marco was fighting both King and Queen, King not fully taking out Marco is more of an indictment on him than vice versa.
I know it's why, she loves Zoro to the point of severe delusion.

Yeah, I know, I mentioned that on purpose to show that there's no way to conclude who's superior when neither side was able to damage the other, despite or in spite of devil fruits involved.

That's the thing though, did he hurt King? Deal any damage to them? Or was he just on defense? I don't care about him being able to "match" his enemies or bounties or whatnot, I care about him dealing damage if we're claiming he's superior and so far he wasn't able to do that to any of the admiral or the commanders.

That's like saying King > Marco when nothing indicates that. Makes no sense to conclude anything when no damage has been dealt to Marco or any of his opponent, and the only time Marco got damaged was when he was cuffed and caught off guard because of Whitebeard's sickness.

Yeah I put Marco slightly above King, but hey that may change since we might actually see King in action. But for right now Marco > King=Katakuri.>Queen>Cracker=Jack

I like the number Power levels, I have a fascination with the numbers since DBZ, but it is hard to accurately gauge their strength in numbers, since A>B, but B>C, yet C>A.
Sanji's power level has steady risen and actually it is accurate. We saw how he fared versus Vergo, then got stomped by YC2 Doffy, then he fought his family in WCI and had a small skirmish with Oven and Daifuku just enough to see that he was at their level, then in Wano he fought Page One, and then he got this power up through RS. His improvement from VA level to YC2 is what we need to see from others, even from Zolo. So no hate for Sanji please.

Zolo was still a mystery to how he got to YC1. In Dressrosa he was maybe top VA level we dont know but weaker than YC3 Doffy since Luffy > Zolo. Then we jump into Wano, no battles no training and he is stronger than Killer, understandable, somewhat struggles with Hawkins and Gyukimaru, though Im sure if he were to be more serious he'd finish them off soon. Then we get to the rooftop and now he is YC1. We didnt see him get to that level. Disappointing.

So for Law to go from below YC3 to YC1 with no battles or training, it freaks me out.

The gap from Yonko and YC/2 should have never been that high up, Kaido should not have been able to OHKO g4 Luffy who was nearly YC1. It was impressive and we got to realize the huge gap in between YC1s and Yonko. But now the power level storyline makes no sense on how Luffy was able to jump that gap within the same arc. Not only Luffy but Kid and Law too.

I understand OP is near the endgame and Luffy has to be this strong to fight off Akainu or BB or WG, but why give Kaido the title of WSC, making it seem he is stronger than Akainu or BB. Like who is Luffy going to challenge after this?

A good fight I was expecting from the Yonko would be like the Bullet fight, where it took combined forces to take him down.

I don't think that is entirely true. It's not like he fooled around Marco or something.
But yes, I do see where you're coming from. I certainly thought he was like Marco tier back in Marineford

But still, Doflamingo is certainly a YC tier, but on the mid level. It's just that he can't match YC1s, which does make sense. He's more of a YC 2-3 tier, than a YC1 tier.

Cracker folded quickly the moment Luffy figured out his trick, it came down more to intel than people generally give credit for. With intel, Cracker goes down to one round of G4.
Doflamingo needed 2 rounds of G4 + Law + randoms distracting and buying time to be taken down. And this is pretty much the same Luffy that faced Cracker, Luffy got a big spike only during fight with Katakuri

He did damage King and Queen with his attacks. It's just that they are also incredibly tanky, as we have seen already.
Let me put it this way. Assume, Queen ~ 0.8 King. If King and Marco are near equals, then adding Queen would allow the duo to fold Marco fairly easily. Which they couldn't. Marco fought them for hours, and even expended quite a bit of energy to heal up thousands of allied soliders.
Not sure how you can see this and not come to the obvious conclusion regarding Marco/King.

Why wouldn't you care about Marco matching Akainu's attacks? That does suggest his attack power is close to Akainu's. The implication here is fairly obvious.

Hmm, if Admirals couldn't take him down, even when they are serious (like Akainu), what does it suggest? To me it suggests they are somewhat close in power.
Marco can give Marineford Akainu a high diff fight
