Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

again ur not sense ur saying that he lost his “will” in what sense? Him improving means he has gotten stronger no matter how u slice it Ur bring Moria as example and even peak Moria isn’t-close to kaido imo
In the sense that Moria went from being incredibly strong, strong enough to make Kaido feel some thrill in battle. To being fodder, so weak that he got kicked out of Shichibukai for being weak

In OP, will is an important part of power level.
If you get your will crushed (like what happened to Crocodile with WB, Moria with Kaido), you become weaker cause your haki becomes weak.

Thank u just prove my point u clearly said current kaido>39 years old kaido despite being older. it doesn’t matter even if it’s slightly it’s still an increase is my point.
Yeeah, minor improvement. That's my point.

And I’m saying that the jinbei that fought ace isn’t is the same jinbei now (strength wise)
Slight improvement is expected, still same tier.

I don't think current Kaido is a tier above what we saw 20 years ago, same thing here.

Why don’t u think he can beat queen? Queen just has durability and jinbei hasn’t gone all out yet
Jinbe in land has no feats suggesting he can. Probably gonna be a high diff, but I think he loses.

Jinbe in water/mixed-environment wins IMO, for what it counts

I reread the fight jinbei look like he was in control the whole fight and doesn’t look like he wasn’t struggling at all
Ehh, there were moments where he struggled a bit.
Overall, it was a mid diff

The thing is, this was Ace prior to joining WBP.
As we saw in spinoff, and as was implied in main manga. Ace has a very high power curve, and grew stronger after joining the WPB.

Jinbe =/= peak Ace.
Peak Ace is powerful, arguably bordering on YC1 tier, not the rookie Ace that stalemated Jinbe.
But how do you determine which of the two was stronger? Jinbei arguably has better feats, like taking Big Mom's hits and throwing her off the ship as opposed to... I'm not sure if Ace showed more feats in the spinoff but he was getting his ass rocked by Whitebeard. Also, if Ace can get stronger, why can't Jinbei?

Jinbe was in his early 40s and an established veteran at the time. 40s is the time when characters peak in OP.
Ace was a rookie going through a meteoric rise like Luffy.

Who would have a higher growth rate? Should be pretty obvious.

Plus, we have everything from the Ace novel showing massive growth of Ace. Going from being no diff'd by WB in sleep, to fighting casual WB for hours.
If we want to look at main manga, Ace gave BB with darkness fruit a high diff, inspite of being countered + BB being recognized as strong by Shanks even prior to getting his DF

We are 2 pages away from Mods making this the 8th banned topic on the Power Levels thread. Can mods just make a poll asking what level Jinbei is? 🤣😂🤣😂

I don’t recall crocodile going thru the Moria route. When was was he consider incredibly strong to being weak? Can u provide me proof on that? But what proof did crocodile had haki tho? crocodile has never shown proof or has been mention to have haki lol. Unless u think he Lost his haki lol even that I still don’t believe lol

Doesn’t matter if it’s minor still isn’t the same power.

I didn’t say that either ur using age as a factor for being weaker when it isnt the case most of time in this series

The question is have we seen jinbei gone all out?
Do u think jinbei has gone all out?

Jinbei with water can beat queen according to ur logic. That proof that he at least equal to sanji which is at least YC2 lvl

Which part did it look like he was struggling lol he was in control the whole entire fight .

Yeah this whole scenario is throwing me off. I have reread this fight 4 times, very slowly as to not miss anything, and I am just stunned anyone thinks Whose Who actually put up a real fight against Jinbei

Any times Whose who did the slightest bit extra Jinbei would adjust. Jinbei carried Whose Who the whole fight.

Now I don't know why Jinbei didnt make short work of the F6 but it was clear he could have.

Maybe he was trying to get more info out of the blabbermouth

Jimbei IMO is YC3 level. He has not shown the ability to defeat Doffy or Cracker. Maybe Jack now, but not Queen.
I place Doffy as the start of YC3 level with Cracker and Jack at the top. Whoever can defeat them can fight Queen.
I place Jozu and Vista at the top of YC2 with Smoothie at the beginning of YC2 level, since we have no idea what she can do, but doesn't seem like a lot.
YC1 is hard to place either Kata or King and top Marco, (excluding Beckman since we literally have no info on him).

I don't see Jimbei or Ace able to defeat Doffy or Cracker. People like to believe Ace was YC1 or near that level but honestly that's a joke. Ace did not show us any haki usage even if Post time skip didn't "exist". I had put Jimbei in between YC4-YC3. low YC3 level. Say Ace was YC4 when he fought Jimbei. Then 2 years later, Ace fought BB (who believe it or not allows just about anybody attack him), then he "fought" more like clashed with Aokiji, but as we know that Aokiji = Akainu roughly, and Akainu >>> Ace. Then we can make the educated guess that Aokiji could no diff Ace if he really wanted to.
Also, Jozu and Vista seemed to be stronger than Ace since they were veterans and even Shanks pointed it out that it was too early for him to 2nd Commander and was too hot headed.

Jimbei took more attacks from WW than WW from Jimbei and at the end it did seem that WW was cornering Jimbei until it seem that WW struck a nerve and JImbei was able to quickly overpower him. I think Jimbei should have fought Jack instead but whatever.

Crocodile and Moria....
Crocodile was a mistake during Alabasta so lets not put it against him. Crocodile in MF was stronger but not YC3+ stronger. Well maybe YC3 but weak, I would be fine putting him at YC4/Yonko Executive level. I think it is ridiculous that the WG gave him such a huge bounty but too Zolo, Sanji and Jimbei rather smaller.
I don't think Prime Moria was near Kaido's level. He may have been like YC3 level or something. He did get massacred and his crew so, I doubt he gave Kaido a challenge.

Poll has been posted for the Jinbe topic.

Remember, nothing is set in stone and Oda can make characters as strong as they need to be, just as @DeadlyBeast said.

This is really my point. Ace didn't have much feats but was narratively said to be strong, with his comparison being to a Warlord and later being a Commander in WBs crew. At this point in the story we hadn't seen what the upper echelon could really do e.g. seeing YC & above fights post timeskip with all these advanced haki's, awakening etc.

Now that we have seen this level of fighting, Oda is basically making every character from earlier on in the story that narratively was in this tier of strength (YC & above) now be shown as strong. For some characters that had no known on screen feats this isn't a problem but for characters we've seen "go all out" it did become a consistency problem, which Oda has chosen to fix with a Retcon.
What? I just showed you that there were feats suggesting Ace was at upper Yonko commander level.

None of the Shichibukai, except Mihawk, had any portrayal similar to or above "right hand men" type Yonko commanders.

Doflamingo had consistently had one of the best portrayals of the Shichibukai, from his very intro in pre TS, to his arc in Dresrossa/PH. And he was low-mid commander tier.
And this is inspite of Doflamingo being awakened, having one of the greatest will power in the entire series, being a conqueror's haki user and having one of the greatest representations of being an actual conqueror.
His crew didn't obey him out of fear, but out of unending admiration and willful subordination. They were all ready to give their lives for him, and believed in his dream of being the PK/king of the world, almost a warped Strawhat crew to Luffy level admiration for Doflamingo.

In spite of all that, he was just low-mid commander tier.
This is just what Shichibukai were meant to be. Largely speaking, low-mid commander level characters.

The Warlords were introduced as a global force that rivaled the Yonko. The only world this would make narrative sense is if all of them are at least YC level or else they would just be fodder. The showings we have gotten out of them early on in the story (Crocodile &Moriah) were far below YC level of strength. Now post time skip both of them have been shown to matter. Crocodile clearly is a lot stronger now. Moriah lost to pre time skip Luffy who struggled against a Pacifista. Now we have seen him invade a Yonko island and take out all the fodder, when in reality Moriah should also be fodder. We saw Yonko Fodder take out Pacifista in Marineford and now we're expected to believe that Moriah is strong enough to warrant the officers of a Yonko crew (Devon & Shilew were the ones to take him out). He hasn't had much of a showing yet but he's already being narratively portrayed as if he is a stronger threat than what he should be.

The heart of the matter to me is - the Warlords were narratively a global force of elite pirates and as a group were later compared to Yonko. And now that we have seen Yonko & their crew fight, the Warlords are being retconned from paradise displays of power to match up with new world displays of power. This doesn't apply to every member, just the ones that had showings early on in the story.
I agree Shichibukai combined, is roughly equivalent to a typical Yonko crew.

Shichibukai don't necessarily need to be on upper commander level for that to be true. Even it it may very well be.
If you treat Shichibukai as Mihawk = Yonko, other Shichibukai = commanders, this would very well fit as well. There is no "Shichibukai level", it can go from Yonko level to Yonko commander level to even Yonko executive level. Though anything below Yonko executive level, doesn't make sense from a narrative perspective, I agree there

Yonko fodder never took out Pasifista in Marineford, those were the WB commanders (the 6-16 numbers, who are likely low commander level characters after seeing how strong Izo was in current arc) and veteran pirate captains who one shotted the Pacifista.
This is very much consistent with how the monster trio one shotted Pacifista as well.

Moria never got retconned either. In fact he was kicked out for being too weak.
Moria very well can be a lot stronger than Yonko fodder, but still be below commander leve

This age thing is a completely separate argument to me from retconning but I still disagree about their being consistency. People are as strong as they need to be for the story to work regardless of age.

There has been no consistency in when a person peaks or when a person is old how much weaker they are if they are weaker at all. For example:
  • Luffy & peers (Zoro, Kid, Law, Yamato, Sabo, etc) reaching the highest level of power OP has displayed (or likely to reach it by EOS) in their 20s
    • Unless the ceiling on power levels gets removed (this would start making this whole argument moot if power levels don't have a ceiling), these characters are peaking before their 40s
  • Big Mom is still strong well into her 60s (she is 68) without any one explicit mention of her being too old for combat in the same way we got for White Beard
There would have to be too many exceptions for their to be considered consistency. For every character you could argue follows the rule you can find another that doesn't.
You may say there is no consistency, because things don't fit 100%. As is with real life, nothing fits 100%, because there are rare exceptions to the rule.
But an clear pattern is evidently there, with characters peaking in their middle-age, and getting weaker in old-age

1. Luffy and co are reaching that level, because they fight and push themselves non stop, resulting in haki bloom and improvement in stats

2. BM is a mutant freak, this is established within the story.
Look at other top tiers - Garp, Sengoku, Whitebeard and Rayleigh. All got nerfed from old age

Yes Oda could have done it without a retcon but that is not what he chose to do. Oda retconned characters from earlier on in the story to keep them relevant and have narrative consistency is all I'm arguing.
You maybe right. But I'll wait for Crocodile's feats, and narrative before I say something for sure.

These are also possible scenarios:
- Crocodile may very well turn out to be nowhere near YC1 tier. Which mean, there is no retcon relative to his Marineford feats
- Crocodile may become YC1 tier or above. But Oda explains it away by something similar to what I pointed out.

If Crocodile turns out to be any of the two above mentioned scenarios, I am right.

Or else, he got retconned, and I will readily accept my L

ODA needs to explain in some form of manner for consistency sake; How or why the characters have become more of a threat.

YC tiers are bs...
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I mean, Marco 2v1 trolled King and Queen.

The problem is, for YC tiers to exist, the following must be true:

YC1: Marco=King=Katakuri=Ben Beckmann=Shiryu?
YC2: Jozu? or Vista? or Ace?=Queen=Smoothie= Lucky Roux? or Yasopp?=???
YC3: Jozu? or Vista? or Ace?= Jack= Cracker= Lucky Roux? or Yasopp?= ???

And it doesn't even work out with the characters we do know well. I think ultimately we will need new terms now that we are at the top.

Actually I think Marine ranks are much more easily translateable into powerlevels now that we have a group of special zodiac codename Vice Admirals revealed...

I think we're actually not too far apart on our view here. What I meant about Ace and his feats is that they don't directly translate to YC level by today's displays/feats. He didn't show any basic haki, awakening, advanced haki techniques etc but instead showed at the time he is relative in strength to YCs & Warlords using the standards Oda was using back then. Where I say he is lightly retconned is if he were to resurrect at same level as he died, seeing him fight today would look very different than when we saw him before and that in general his feats today would look better/more powerful than what we have actually seen in the manga. This to me is because Oda changed the ruler used to measure what a feat translates to in regards to power level once we got into the new world.

For the Warlords I'm arguing that they have to be YC level fighters, so I'm not arguing they all have to be YC1 level or above. I just don't think a member of the Warlords that is not a gag like Buggy is pointless if they are just fodder, which is what the original versions of Crocodile & Moriah would be by current power level standards. I think there is variation in strength of Warlords with some being YC3/4 and others being Yonko level themselves. The Warlords that had fought early on in the series experienced this retcon, with Crocodile being the most apparent case so far.

Yonko fodder never took out Pasifista in Marineford, those were the WB commanders (the 6-16 numbers, who are likely low commander level characters after seeing how strong Izo was in current arc) and veteran pirate captains who one shotted the Pacifista.

These no name New World pirates took out a Pacifista. I may be mistaken but I don't think we know who these guys on the bottom panels are and to me they qualify as standard fodder pirates in the new world.

Yes I agree that Moriah was too weak compared to the rest of the Warlords. Where I argue Moriah has already gone through a retcon (and if he's alive I'm sure we'll see more) is the following:

  • In TB Moriah went all out and his level was that of Pre Timeskip Luffy,
  • Pre Timeskip Luffy struggled against a Pacifista
  • New World fodder (nameless pirates) as evidenced in above panel were able to take out a Pacifista with high diff
  • Current Moriah post time skip was able to take out droves of new world fodder pirates and required having YC fighters in BB crew taking him out
The above to me is unexplained and does not have consistency without making something up. Some people argue he found his will & got back to former power and I argue he is getting retconned and that we will see more of it if he ends up being alive.

You may say there is no consistency, because things don't fit 100%. As is with real life, nothing fits 100%, because there are rare exceptions to the rule.

My argument isn't that there isn't a 100% consistency, I'm saying there isn't enough consistency (say 50% even) to warrant claiming a pattern. My understanding is that you claim that characters in OP peak in their 40s given exceptions like Luffy (leaning towards peak at 20) or Big Mom (kept peak way past 40s). Correct me if I'm wrong?

My argument is that the characters in OP peak at what ever age they need to peak at for the story to work and that as a result we actually end up with a wide distribution of ages that characters are at peak strength. This variety to me is saying that significant % of characters that are the top of the power scale are not in their 40s currently and that as the story progresses we will be leaning towards a younger and younger group of characters at the top. For example I think we will have similar number of characters in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s that are considered top tier power level in OP by EOS making it hard to say there is a specific pattern that isn't so broad that it loses it's meaning.

You maybe right. But I'll wait for Crocodile's feats, and narrative before I say something for sure.

I agree here. I'm making the case these characters have been retconned based on what we've seen and how Oda has handled Wano but it's possible Oda could still go in another direction and use in story explanations of people like Crocodile powering up. I personally think Oda will take the easy way out and just retcon, especially with how he has chosen to handle Wano but you may end up being right so we'll just have to wait and see.

That sounds like an exaggeration to me, they ganged up to take down 1 Pacifista...

If I had to guess, they are at the level of the Supernovas in Shabondy or less

That would make sense, since they very much failed to make it in the New World

The guy with the gun is called Pavlik, the lady is called Elmy, the horned guy is called Rush, and the small guy with the Naginata is called Choi and they are all Captains of New World crews.

This to me is because Oda changed the ruler used to measure what a feat translates to in regards to power level once we got into the new world.
But isn't this because haki itself was invisible back in paradise days? Oda has himself confirmed that Ace can use all these forms of haki at it's base level.
His feats scale to YC level by simply scaling his performance against BB with darkness fruit.

Also, none of the YCs yet, except Katakuri, have shown any advanced haki or awakening.

I fully agree that Crocodile in Marineford was retconned to where he narratively made sense to be at. Because there is no way he would have hypothetically regained his will in prison, which if anything is supposed to do the opposite. To be noted (importantly) however, is that he was retconned only relative to Strawhats.
Jozu and Doflamingo undoubtedly were shown in a better light than Crocodile.

I agree with all of this.

The issue comes when people wanna argue that Jinbe is somehow YC1 tier, when there is no narrative or feat which supports this.
Or even Crocodile, but with him there is the unknown factor.

There is only one Yonko level Shichibukai, and that is Mihawk.
Weevil is the only other one which possibly has hype on/above YC1s, he is arguably YC1+

Nobody else has such a portrayal. Doflamingo, the Shichibukai with the best portrayal apart from Mihawk and Weevil, turned out to be YC3 tier

  • Current Moriah post time skip was able to take out droves of new world fodder pirates and required having YC fighters in BB crew taking him out
I haven't read the manga till Wano arc.
But, the anime showed that pretty much everyone who one shotted Pacifista were all WB commanders and veteran captains.

Moria was stronger than pre TS Luffy. It was a combined effort from Strawhats that took him down.
But yes, he was weak AF compared to what a Shichibukai is supposed to be, hence got kicked. At best, he is Tobiroppo level, and I'm being generous here.

He was weak, both narratively and by feats

You misunderstand my argument.
My argument isn't that characters can't peak earlier. Luffy and co probably will peak earlier.

My argument is that, after middle-age, characters don't grow strong any more, and simply maintain this level till the old age. And once characters go into their old age, they start becoming weaker This is the pattern I am talking about.
To put it simply, whatever power they have at their middle-age, will be their peak. Irrespective of whether they attained it at middle-age, or in younger days,
Unless of course, they are characters who didn't have DF before but then ended up getting them, which can lead to insane power spikes. Example : BB.

Like I've already mentioned before, BM is an exception cause she is an established mutant.
And even for her, there is zero indication that she grew stronger compared to when she was in her 40s. At best, she maintained her peak through the old age.

Yeah, let's see.

I'm afraid you are right, but hoping Oda will at least try to make things make sense. Especially given that there is an established in world precedence for the same.

1. Ace only matched Aokiji’s attack because of elemental shenanigans.

2. Why are we assuming the Jinbei that Ace fought was as powerful as current Jinbe ? Why couldn’t he have gotten stronger ?

Of course Jinbe got stronger since then

Didn't Ace just entered the New World when he first meet Jinbe?
