Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

In regards to zoro's advanced armor haki... Technically he does have it. As far as the series has told us there are many levels of advanced haki. So far the framing is that the first would be simply covering your body in armor haki. The second level is projecting your haki a distance from your body. And finally you have using haki to cause internal damage to your target. Luffy presumably has all 3 of these but it is worth noting he technically skipped the second one and went straight to causing internal damage. The second level as far as I understand is what allows you to imbue things with haki which is crucial for high level swordsmanship. Zoro of course has been able to do this since his training with mihawk and is competent enough at it to imbue his swords, harden them, and also imbue his long range slashes with haki. What zoro lacks so far is being able to use ranged haki to cause internal damage to targets like luffy or rayleigh can. But it is unclear if this skill is applicable to swordsmanship.

While I do want to believe Zoro has at least level 1 aCoA the story hasn't actually made that point clear. Basic advanced CoA is supposed to be extending the haki out from the source to create an invisible armor, regardless of whether the armor is around the body or the weapon being used. This to me implies that basic CoA e.g. hardening can be applied both to a body or a weapon without it being considered advanced.

Imbuing haki on objects/projectiles so far seems to just be a basic skill that any level of CoA can be applied to. We've seen this happen for invisible CoA (Kuja warriors), hardened CoA (Vergo) , and advanced CoA (Scabbards/early Oden), advanced CoA+aCoC (Roger,WB).

This leaves me to believe Zoro's ability with advanced CoA is still completely up in the air.

It was implied that Zoro had conquerers Haki since Punk hazard Arc. It is subtle but if you go back and reread the arc now the context you have about conquerers Haki, it perfectly explains how he defeated Monet....

I don't understand what your reasoning is. As in, basic advanced haki is extending haki from the source but people who do this aren't necessarily using advanced forms of haki? As far as I can tell haki emission is essentially the same as skill as imbuing stuff with haki. Back when luffy was trying to use this skill against the prisoners in wano hyoguro explained that he learned the skill from a swordsman. And then demonstrated by using his haki to punch someone at a distance.

ID jailer beasts awakenings are official, but it was Oda's fault for not building a solid ground from there on up. We DD and Kata have awakening really similar so it matches up. I suppose for Zoans, Oda had yet to think about the clouds around them as marking for their awakenings when he first created them in ID, so he retconned it. But he did a poor job at it.

The Beasts Pirates fights were underwhelming. King's fight was intense at the beginning but towards the end it was more anticlimactic. I guess after seeing what Luffy went through fighting YC level characters, hyped me up for Zolo vs King and Queen vs Sanji. Zolo skipping ACoA and going straight into ACoC even after not fully confirming he had CoC in the first place was such a huge asspull.
Sanji being a cyborg or whatever was pathetic. I liked Sanji just being normal.
Dont even get me started on Jack's fight.
The flying 6 were disappointing too. The straw hats should have been giving some development before Onigashima but instead they were sidelined for the longest time. Brook and Usopp didn't even get their own time to shine.

Oda overwhelmed himself into packing so much into Wano, believing it was going to be epic, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Whatever happened to a small centralized story where even minor characters are remembered but are not obscuring the limelight from the main cast? Look at Alabasta, 60 chapters and the story was wrapped up amazingly, even having Luffy fight Croco 3 rounds.
Or Enies Lobby 60 chapters too with such a huge dramatic event at every corner, with a flashback and everything.
Dressrosa at 100 chapters, was overwhelmed too and maybe that is where the problem started, adding a bunch of new characters that were supposed to be sidelined but overshadowed the main cast.
Wano had the 9 red scabbards, nameless Samurai that kept popping up, the Yakuza bosses (worthless), various enemy headliners that were worthless too, Minks (should've stayed in Zou), the Orochi ninjas that served no purpose, the even more worthless Mimawagarumi samurai, the Numbers, CP0, Otama and her ability, Big Mom Pirates, and Greenbull at the end.

Agree mostly.

I won't justify Zoro getting advanced conqueror's immediately after awakening basic conqueror's.....But Zoro never skipped advanced armament haki. Without advanced aramament haki or advanced conqueror's haki, it is impossible to damage Kaido through physical attacks (this has been established in the manga).
The fact that Zoro was able to damage Kaido, worry him enough to dodge etc. is proof that Zoro had advanced armament haki in rooftop.

What Zoro doesn't have is "internal destruction" variant of advanced armament haki, which is a step above the "regular" advanced armament haki (which is haki flow/barrier/coating).

He didn't defeat Monet with haki. How he did it was already perfectly explained back then.

I'm a big Zoro fanboy but he didn't show any CoC until Onigashima.

She couldnt move paralyzed, Not passed out. I interpret that as Zoro’s will to fight conquerering Monet’s will to fight. Since Haki is willpower you are able to infer Zoro has conquerers haki. I’m not saying he used it there but the clear intention of him possibly possessing it

Gist of it for me is imbuing CoA haki ≠ advanced CoA.

Applying/imbuing CoA haki on ones body or an object is not the same as advanced CoA. Basic advanced CoA, emission, requires there to be some space between the underlying object (whether a persons physical arm or a weapon like a sword). This means if someone is using advanced CoA that the thing the haki is applied/imbued to never makes physical contact with anything since the haki armor is there.

For example we have seen when someone is using advanced CoC + advanced CoA there is a large space between the underlying object (arms or weapons) hence comments like they're not even touching (Kaido vs Luffy, Roger v WB, etc). On the other hand we have seen applications of advanced CoC by itself via Yamato and Zoro where they both get the trailing lighting pattern but do not have the iconic not making physical contact moments.

It's interesting to see the various interpretations of the expanded Haki system introduced in Wano.

This is my personal breakdown of it:
Basic/Hardening
Emission/Advanced Armament = Ryou
Internal Damage = AdCoC

To me, I believe 1010 was implying that Internal Destruction and AdCoC were one and the same. Luffy had lamented that his hits were too shallow until he realized that he could use imbue CoC into his attacks. And that would make sense as that was the issue everyone was having until that point. Kaido was feeling their hits, but it was still too shallow, implying that Emission works on Kaido, but its effects on marginal depending on the amount of force behind the hits. Luffy, Zoro, and the Scabbards were able to harm Kaido, but not do lasting damage. But when the former two broke out AdCoC, it was only then it became super effective. So, on that note, I'm pretty sure Zoro has Internal Destruction or whatever the Swordsman equivalent is.

Also, going to take this time to gas my boy Sanji up a bit, but I believe he also trained and attained Ryou. Look at his breakdown of the components for Ifrit Jambe, he noted that he trained his Haki. Emission was described as a sort of invisible armor by Hyogoro, so it'd make sense if that aspect was what Sanji was relying on as well as his exoskeleton to handle his hotter flames. I'd find it hard to believe that he trained his haki, yet didn't learn Ryou.

The real issue with all of this, I feel, is the pacing of Wano and Onigashima. Oda just didn't have the bandwidth to cover all his bases properly, despite the pieces being there.

but... why? The framing in the manga is very clear.

The chapter frames emission and imbuement as being the exact same thing. Hyogoro makes the case that swordsmen use the technique to cut and not cut what they want, and the sword becomes one with the swordman. He also states that he learned the technique from a master swordsman. And then when he demonstrates the technique in question he punches some fool from a distance. Which luffy states is exactly what he wanted to learn. Same technique, different application/usage.

It's also worth noting, there's no rule that states people using cladding and armor haki won't touch when clashing. Shanks and WB's sword's clashed when they met all those chapters back. When big mom and kaido were reunited and fight we saw the sky split and their swords made contact. When luffy just learned cladding his attacks injured kaido at a distance but later through the fight we saw both of them making contact when attacking.

Hyogoro's framing was a tad different from that. He mentioned with emission/imbuement you take haki from other part of your body and extent it to where you need it to be.

Not sure of what you see in 1010 that makes you think internal damage armor haki and cladding are the same. Cladding has never been stated to cause internal damage. As far as I can tell in this case cladding and internal damage armor haki are independent techniques which stack on top of each other. Internal damage has been explicitly stated to be a level ahead of haki emission. It's simply factually incorrect that cladding and internal damage are the same technique.

I think the manga has made it clear just in the opposite direction. We have seen usage of advanced CoA on its own, we have seen usage of advanced CoC on its own, and we have seen both together.

You'll notice that emission level advanced CoA creates an invisible armor around the hand in the right image. The idea is the CoA makes contact and not the fist itself. This is made clear even in your example where Hyogoro hits the Smile user without his fist making contact. This was displayed by Sentomaru against Luffy during Saobody and also by Rayleigh against the giant elephant.

In the second panel, with infusion it shows the difference is only that the CoA goes into the object and destroys it from the inside. This was shown with Luffy destroying the collars, Rayleigh destroying the collars, and Luffy destroying that one tree during practice.

Here we see Kaido used aCoC by itself against Kinemon. In this case Kaido's kanabo directly hit Kinemon's body. There is no separation between them. We have seen this happen in other instances where Yamato also used aCoC (indicated by the trailing black lighting). So advanced CoC itself is not what causes there to be space.

In this case we see that Luffy uses aCoC + aCoA which results in his body not making physical contact with Kaido's kanabo or even body when he lands the stomach punch and upper cut. The clear difference between this case and the use of advanced CoC by itself is the space that is there between objects.

We have seen Zoro use aCoC against King and nothing of this sort happened where there is space between his swords and King's body during the moment of impact. We've also seen Luffy post learning aCoC get hit directly by Kaido's kanabo imbued with aCoC without the space between them which to me is further proof that aCoC's signature is the trailing lighting and that aCoAs signature is the space between objects, which is just bolstered by combing with aCoC.

Even in Luffy's final attack (Bajrang Gun) against Kaido, Luffy makes a point of saying that he learned how to attack Kaido without physically touching him with a flashback to Hyogoro teaching him aCoA. If Luffy only knew aCoC his fist would have made contact with Kaido's lava armor and been melted.

I'm not talking about Armor and Cladding, I'm referring to the Infusion of CoC and Internal Damage being one and the same.

That's... just factually incorrect. Hyogoro specifically explains that internal damage as a more advanced version of emission. If internal damage and cladding were the same they wouldn't even be in the same skill branch luffy was trying to learn to begin with.

I don't think it's incorrect. Early on in that very same chapter where the explanation was given, Hyogoro thinks to himself about how Luffy was basically already capable of using AdCoC/CoC infusion and how it was more advance than any form of Ryou/Emission he could ever teach Luffy, implying that the two aren't intrinsically linked.

Then, in chapter 1010, Oda juxtaposed Hyogoro's statement about internal destruction with Luffy's realization that he could infuse CoC into one's attacks. SO I'm pretty sure the intention was to imply that Internal Destruction = AdCoC.

Haki is so confusing but @DeadlyBeast did it a great job explaining the difference between CoA and CoC advanced forms, better than Oda...
So far how I see it in levels of power:

- Advanced CoC imbued with Advanced CoA Emission is the strongest so far, which Is depicted by a void space with black lightning streaks (eg. Luffy vs Kaido, Roger vs WB, Big Mom vs Page One (silly BM), Big Mom & Kaido's Conquest of the Sea attack)

- Advanced CoC attacks depicted by black streaks of lightning (Kaido clubbing Luffy directly, Yamato vs Kaido, WB vs Shanks, Kaido vs BM clash, Zolo vs King final slash, WB vs Oden maybe)

- Advanced CoA Internal Destruction (Luffy and Rayleigh breaking the collars, Oden slashing Kaido, Zolo slashing Kaido) this one is harder to visualize IMO

- Advanced CoA Emission is the invisible armor (Rayleigh vs Elephant, Sentomaru vs Pre TS Luffy, Hyogoro vs Gifter, 3 Admirals blocking WB's attack, Yamato vs random Gifter)

- Basic CoA black colored hardening on the skin, weapon, or projectile of any kind (idk if full body clad makes the user's haki stronger or not but I liked it, wish we had seen more of it)

A few notes:
1. we have no way of telling if ACoC + ACoA Emission also contains "ACoA Internal Destruction".
2. it is not clear if Zolo used ACoA internal destruction throughout the whole fight against Kaido, it seems so since he kept being able to slash him, and with Ashura, Kaido hinted Zolo using ACoC slash but we didn't see the black streaks. Next, Zolo Is not confirmed to have any advanced CoA up until the rooftop and King's fight, which wasn't 100% clear. Zolo did use ACoC + CoA Emission vs King to save his swords but in the final slash it seems to me it was a regular ACoC slash no emission.
3. BM vs Kaido and WB vs Shanks cloud splitting clashes seem to be only ACoC attacks no Emission unlike WB vs Roger or Luffy vs Kaido (chapter 1026).
4. Ryou is CoA & ACoA Haki in Wano, just like Mantra is CoO Haki in Skypiea.
5. Oden while having ACoC never demonstrated having CoC + ACoA Emission, but it is implied he may have had ACoA Internal Destruction due to being able to cut Kaido.
6. Piggybacking on note 5, my theory is that in order to be able to penetrate Kaido's tough scales you would at least need to use ACoA Internal Destruction. BUT in order to cause actual damage like scarring him, you would need to use ACoC and above. This is why it seems that all the Red Scabbards and Killer were able to hurt him but not cause actual damage. There is no indication that they have CoC.
7. Final note, there have been a few clashes where two CoC users clash using basic CoA and lightning strikes come out (Chinajo vs Luffy, Luffy vs Doflamingo)

Zoro definitely had the white smoke vfx around his blades during King fight which normally accompanies internal destruction Haki.

Zoro wanked as expected, he has no business being above characters like Garp/Rayleigh yet (he's moreso comparable to Sabo/Law).

Few more random rankings like that of Smoker, Pizarro etc

But otherwise pretty good list really

Zoro definitely had the white smoke vfx around his blades during King fight which normally accompanies internal destruction Haki.

Also what do you guys think of Worstgen’s Top 50 character list ?

I think it’s mostly ok but I’d have King > Sanji and Doffy below Jack. I could even be persuaded to see Zoro > GB considering his humiliating performance in Wano.
