Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

• For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
• Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
• Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
• We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

1. Shanks v Mihawk
2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
3. Zoro > Luffy
4. Zoro v Sanji
5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
6. Mihawk's rank within the story
7. Law having CoC currently.
8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

At least for me what I'm discussing is the possibility that there is a second level to advanced CoC that allows the user to physically manifest haki as a weapon.

Roger's Divine Departure has his slash itself as the same color of CoC lightning

I don't remember Kaido and Big Mom but Yamato did that to take down the Number that was chasing Franky.

Yeah black blades are still a mystery too so maybe this will be key to making them. Interestingly enough even Roger, WB, & Oden didn't manage to turn their blades black. So clearly haki alone isn't enough so I think there will be more to it that we'll learn.

Yeah I can definitely be reaching here. The color I'm referencing is in the anime when Roger uses Divine Departure the slash itself is completely black and looks like Getsuga Tensho.

The attack that Yamato and Kaido use is a normal air slash attack. Yamato calls her something like Ringing Arrow and Kaido calls his something like Demon Arrow. You can see for both of them the attack is an flying slash in the shape of an arrow so instead of being a cutting flying slash its a piercing one. I'd say the most similar move to this is Brook's thrust attack that Ryuma used against Zoro in Thriller Bark.

When Kaido hit Zoro and Law with a single attack

This was a regular Thunder Bagua. Kaido literally blitzed Zoro and Law. The only thing about this scene that was a big deal if you ask is why the eff both of them were conscious after taking a hit from this attack head on from hybrid Kaido.

I chalk this up to the many power scaling inconsistencies in the Wano arc.

I was fooled by the 2 panels of Kidd doing figuratively nothing during the Big Mom fight that I now for sure have Zoro and Sanji over him.

All the YouTubers that recently did their top 30's are seething

In fairness to youtubers what oda just did to kidd is some BS. kidd should still be in the ballpark or even ahead of the calamities or sweet commanders so there's no particular reason to not have him as one of the strongest fighters in the planet even if he didn't stand a chance against the worst elements of oda's writing.

Shanks sells volumes. Shanks= Money. Shanks is even a favorite of Oda who dresses up as Shanks for interviews. Shanks movie just made a billion yen or some shit like that. Expectations are high for Shanks and Oda understands that. Shanks spikes volume sales like no other and it's insane.

If Shanks was lack luster, OP ad a whole would take a dip and that's also why we have these moments of Shanks stopping an entire war, Shanks forcing Kazaru to stand down, Shanks forcing Greenbull to flee, Shanks during this last chapter. So even of it does seem bs within the bounds of the story, it makes sense in those offices where One Piece is brought to us

It's not like Luffy was in the ballpark of Sweet Commanders when he first met Kaido.

Nah, bottomline is Shanks is cool as hell, always was, always will be. Kidd sucked as a character, and he got the treatment his annoying personality deserved

Well, he did create a character that appeared at the first chapter. 25 years later, we just saw him use his sword for the first time xD

I agree, movie Red was a shitty movie, the last fight was making zero sense with only fan services.

A movie promising Shanks and some backstory for him and his crew was bound to make billions regardless of quality. I didn't like it either but I can tell that they tried, and I'm sure some people did love it. Probably. Musical lovers or something.

Don't take powerlevels in One Piece too seriously

When the story requires Kid and Law and the others to fight against Kaido and Big Mom for an extended period, they could tank any attack

The fight with Shanks was planned to be short, so Kid was defeated instantly

Similarly, Akainu vs Whitebeard lasted for 3 seconds, compared to Akainu and Aokiji who fought for 10 days...

Honestly, I'm taking this past chapter to mean that there is still a tangible gap between the strongest characters (Shanks, Mihawk, Admirals) and everyone else. Said it in the chapter discussion thread, but Kaido and Big Mom losing was just one big fluke and the alliance had no business winning.

I wanna laugh at the face of all those people thinking Kid was going to give Shanks a difficult fight. LOL.

Kid is at best a YC1. He barely did any damage on BM himself. He took maybe 1 or 2 punches from her with NO HAKI, while Law was tanking CoA punches from her. He manage to break one arm, wow, that was his best feat, which could be argued that it was with the help of Law's K-Room Shock Wille attack.
Kid's Damned Punk laser only tickled BM and served too push her down with gravity doing the rest. Law was the one putting up the fight with only Kid supporting him.

Even hard sell saying Kid > Zolo or Yamato or even Marcos. Kid has no feats over them.
I aint no Kid hater, Oda ruined Kid like her ruined BM. I was cheering for Kid and was hoping we get to see a bigger pirate rivalry between him and Luffy, but Oda did Kid no justice during Onigashima. He had potential in Udon, but in Onigashima and the rooftop, Kid barely did anything significant.
Kid had CoC, but instead of focusing on that Oda totally forgot it and NEVER once showed Kid using it.

Also I am firm believer that BM vs Law and Kid was a total fluke and only served the plot to move forward. Law due to his popularity was showcased more in Wano than Kid.
Even Oda admitted that he wasn't expecting Law to be this popular and was going to drop him after Dressrosa and wanted to highlight Kid more than Law, but things switched up.

Back to Shanks. Finally amazing feat how he effortlessly and SINGLE-HANDedly defeated Kid AND Killer who were at full health. Shanks using FS so splendidly and changing the future.

Unfortunately people will use this a way to hype up Mihawk and somehow Blackbeard, instead of giving the sole W to Shanks.

Luffy's haki protected him from stone and flesh melting heat and was tanking ACoC in base. Big Mom forgot that ACoC existed

Luffy is built different. Shanks wouldn't low diff him.
