I think people massively unferstimate the pressure these people are in. They need to finish chapters 3 weeks or more in advance so they can submit it to the magazine.

They need their own time.
They're always drawing, and sleeping few hours because of this.
This is their job, and they have other projects too. When's the last time you think Oda actually had a holiday?

Just because there's a break doesn't mean that he's not doing anything, he's got to look for his "kingdom" so to speak.

If the live show fails it fails, but people really need to stop being salty about mangaka taking breaks. Sure Oda takes more than most, but that's not a bad thing.

I was thinking I am not gonna be baited about people not taking accountable of their own boredom in the age where all sort of art, media, literature, etc are produce at record pace that you never have enough time in your day to consume. And in the age where everything is widely available via the internet.

Look, this may not be palatable, ________, and I keep trying to come up with a better way to put it, but the simplicity of things, at least from my perspective is this:

Eiichiro Oda is not your bitch.

This is a useful thing to know, perhaps a useful thing to point out when you find yourself thinking that possibly Oda is, indeed, your bitch, and should be out there drawing what you want to read right now.

People are not machines. Writers and artists aren't machines.

You're complaining about Oda doing other things than drawing the manga you want to read as if your buying the first volume in the series was a contract with him: that you would pay over your ten dollars, and Oda for his part would spend every waking hour until the series was done, writing the rest of the manga for you.

No such contract existed.

And you know what funnier, half of the people complain probably didn't even pay for it.

Edit: Also to add, where do you think art came from? If not came from the lived exp of a person (whether that person inspire from something, consuming something, experiencing something) aka living their life. No art can be made by a person just sat at their desk. At some point ideas will ran dry. You know that quote "Anime was a mistake." by Miyazaki. When works dominated the field are so remove from life. Nothing more than imitation and derivative from the things that precede it. Even Miyazaki visit places before he made movie (like Wales for his movie Castle in the Sky), heck witnessing a miner strike, he incorporate it into his work. The fact that Oda wanted to go to South Africa, and wasn't able to find time for it. That to me is absurd. A man with that much money, with that much influence. And still had a shackle to his legs.

Edit: ironic that you’re quoting the Gaiman rant when 13 years after, Martin still isn’t anywhere close to releasing WOW. Making millions out of your work is good and all, but actually finishing what you started is even better.

How tf do you even jump to the assumption he's taking time off for the public release of an adaptation he's already seen? About Netflix show - it irritates me as well. Manga is what made One Piece big, Oda big and anime big, it should be Oda priority, even more at the climax of the manga. Besides trailers from One Piece Netflix's live show look terrible. I'd be very surprised if if turns out to be good, nothing indicates that at the moment. So it is obvious that people would like to Oda focus on manga if we're getting two weeks cycle in 2023 with all the breaks and one month off (but this is understandable due to Oda's eyes condition).

And there are other hints suggesting that something shocking will happen. I guess it would be Kizaru dominating Luffy somehow, Oda will remind people that Admirals are practically Yonko's level or at least Kizaru is (heck, maybe he was the strongest admiral all along, it is possible).

Yes, I too wish the worst on Oda and the entire live action production team because I didn't get my contractually obligated 17-20 pages of One Piece a week. Not only does the live action need to fail, Jump needs to fire Oda. That'll learn him.

People around here are way too comfortable with the concept of a weekly release schedule and it's gross af. The actual horror that goes into maintaining that drip feed of free manga is just so abstract and far removed from some peoples' brains it may as well not even be a problem at all. Weekly releases? Lazy! He should focus more on the thing I want to consume more of! Six chapters a month or Oda is literally turning into GRRM!

I know it’s not ideal but it could be worse. Imagine if Oda started taking year long breaks to focus on his movies and live action stuff. Even if those things don’t get us excited, it can unlock new audiences which can beneficial for the author. On the other hand, I also don’t get why we need to bash our fellow members for voicing opinions that we all relate at some level. Do frequent breaks not suck? I remember a time when we used to get continuous weekly chapters, which later became three in row followed by a break. As long as its something routine we will get used to it, even if its two plus a break. But random breaks do suck.

The idea that we are consuming free chapters and so have no ground to complain is ludicrous. Does complaining becomes ok if were buying every weekly chapter? Fans will like some things and fans will complain about some things; you don’t complain if you don’t like something at the core, you just become uninterested.
