Here are the sales for the first volume:
#29 (22,870 copies)
Source
If this was a manga by a new author, I won’t consider it bad, but this is by an author whose previous work sold way more than this. To compare, the final volume of Magi sold about 111,000 copies in the first three days, and Magi in its best days sold over 250k. Also, the first volume of Orient was announced with the first chapter, which says that Kodansha were betting on Ohtaka’s popularity and talent and have high expectations for this manga.
I won’t say Orient is already doomed. There are mangas that experience an increase in sales after a few volumes when the story gets more interesting.
Amazon.jp reviews
There are two 5/5 reviews. The others stated that they picked this manga up because it was by Ohtaka and they liked Magi and Sumomomo, but for some reason, they couldn’t get into it. Some say they don’t feel the same urge to read the next volume that they did when they read the first volume of Magi, and some even questioned if it’s really written by Ohtaka. Not all the negative reviews are, well, so negative, and that this is only the begining and there’s a chance it’s going to get better.
