Re: Pinoy Hangout Thread v. 17

I don't condemn rap as *not* music either. I mean, there are some really fascinating rap and rock or rap/alternative marriages (in bands with MCs like 311, or collaboration works). Asterisk by Orange Range was pretty cool, and I can't really place in what genre Orange Range belongs to. :/ You have nobodyknows+ with their "Hero's comeback" and Homemade Kazoku (famous for both bleach and naruto) who have very fruity and fresh background music for their songs. And they're just the Japanese bands.

And also, I don't dismiss entirely one type of music. Like Imp said, people a few decades ago condemned Beatles music. People centuries ago condemned Mozart for being too inventive. It's an artist-to-artist case, I believe.

One of the good things about this age is that music from one genre to the next have started breaking down barriers between each other. Rock combined with classical music is definitely a tried and tested and very well bred work of art. Recently hip-hop and classical have also been making good chemistry.

Re: Pinoy Hangout Thread v. 17

@Imp- I am a music snob. If it's not played with REAL instruments and sung by a person who can stay in tune without the help of machines, it's not music. As a musician, I take great pride in my craft, and people dumbing the craft down is just plain disrespectful to the other musicians, who've worked their asses off to reach their skill level.

The only thing I hate more than rap/electronic crap are the bastard child sub-genres they come up with, when they mix it up with metal/rock.

I don't exactly love all metal/rock. I don't listen to metal bands with godaweful tone (for guitars and bass), whine too much (lyrics wise), and just can't play properly without the help of technology.

What happened hunt? Tired....I wish I was tired. It would break into the lull of doing nothing productive all day. :oh

@Paper - Fair enough thats your opinion I suppose. I just think you would enjoy more things and like more stuff if you didnt narrow you parameters so much. There are some things I think are silly. I live in a big metal city, and for a long time I disliked metal. Same not long ago with scat singing in jazz, I was all wth is this rubbish but I decided there must be a reason why people like it. So I just listened to the stuff, both, until it grew on me to the point that I changed my opinion on them. My point is if you dont give music a chance and come at it with a negative mindframe you will not enjoy it as much. So just chill out, smoke a joint and listen to some biggy or tupac, you might find its not as shit as you think it is.

Disclaimer: I may or may not be condoning drug use. :aki

That's true. As with probabilities, though, if you listen to a predominantly rap background music, you'll hear so much more of the trash than the rare work of art.

And on not understanding what's being said, doesn't that defeat the purpose of art? You perform in order to convey a message about yourself or about whatever it is your singing. In the case of too-fast-to-understand rap or even scream metal, the most of a message you can get is that either the performer is too emo (in the case of scream metal) or that you're running away from something (in the case of quick rap). Most of the time that isn't the message, so in that sense the performer failed.
Sorry I should have been clearer. I meant misunderstand what the words mean as they use a lot of cultural references and slang. Decent rap you can always understand what the words being said are, understanding what they mean is a different matter. It targets a certain market, the black working class in America, so you come across slang and references someone not from those places or America in general, may not understand. But as with everything that is a part of the art,

Though I agree with the sentiment, there is a sub genre of hiphop here called grime. Too fast to understand is an understatement. >____>;

Its funny that this is probably the longest post I made in this thread and its only two paragraphs. Spammers ftw. xD

edit: Lemme find a link to show you how truly incomprehensible it can be to people. :lmao

I listen to a whole lot of other genres; classical, blues, funk, jazz (not scat...that's just too weird for me), pop (no auto tune), adult contemporary, mo'town, a whole lot of metal and rock sub-genres, and country...no folk, I can't stand folk. I just can't stand "inorganic" music.

Re: Pinoy Hangout Thread v. 17

Inorganic...You dislike it because it doesn't conform to what you think music should be produced with? If it was say made on a piano and they rapped over that, would you be able to "stand" it then? Or perhaps a violin? I still dont fully grasp your obsession with how it is being produced compared to how it sounds. The way music is created is always changing, it doesnt matter if I do it on my computer, a guitar, or using a spoon and fork surely all that should matter is if it sounds good?

Re: Pinoy Hangout Thread v. 17

@Imp- I already told you. I'm a musician, who takes his craft seriously. I can appreciate the fact that they're doing their own thing, but that doesn't mean that I like what they do. If you want to press the issue of conformity, then fine; I do not care for music that I deem "inorganic". You can go ahead and say that I'm closed minded, but I frankly just don't like the crap that passes off for music nowadays, and I never will; just because I respect my instrument and what it stands for, that much. To reiterate, I do not believe that something should be called "music" if it is not played with real musical instruments and is not sung with the actual skills that the singer has developed over years of practice and dedication.

Re: Pinoy Hangout Thread v. 17

uh, the bishops were asking GMA for luxury 4x4s for their respective birthdays as "donations to help spread the word to far-flung provinces". And the requests were granted courtesy of PCSO. Now you see why they staunchily defend GMA and are being nasty to PNoy.

Re: Pinoy Hangout Thread v. 17

Well, I stumbled into a site of questionable content (questionable because it features upcoming anime) and Usagi Drop caught my eye. According to my faulty memory I've seen a manga incarnation somewhere, so I decided to read it.

I have now formally decided to uh, think about my life before I reach 30.
