impy is british :D i'm pinoy though! :dance
Oh I see...I wonder what's so peculiarly interesting about a language thread that it attracts a non-pinoy? lol

speaking about speech class...I have an oral presentation for my Middle East class due in a few weeks....but I have a speech impediment :(

luckily I'm familiar with a few techniques, I've taken speech class before so I know I can improve somewhat.

speech is supposed to come naturally. i understand that people want to learn how to talk properly, but there's no real need for actually studying it...just do it, and you'll get the hang of it.

@level4paperboy:

yeah I guess....it helps if you have the gift...but you can also get by with just practice and repetition..

...

oo nga pala, I remember there was a discussion a few pages back regardging half breeds, and I didn't get a chance yesterday to reply.

I'm full pinoy, and I speak tagalog fluently (although my vocabulary is limited).

But being in America for so long, my mind works in English, but I can easily speak in tagalog if I need to.

And also, I'm a little embarassed to type in tagalog because I can't spell tagalog words very well...I'm not used to it. I can speak it perfectly, but typing it, I need some practice.

@miyi- i'm not denying that practice is good, it's just that lots of people i've heard who arn't talented always sound preachy and tend to drag on...

you're not the only one...lots of my nieces and nephews that grew up in the US have a hard time with filipino as well. knowing how to speak is good enough.

well... if you use too much big words, the speech will become really really boring...always keep your speech short and simple. what you want is for people to listen while you get the important points through. long speeches prevent you from doing that...

There really is no difficulty in typing/writing the Filipino language (tagalog). Tagalog has a unique characteristic of "kung anong bigkas syang sulat" (how it's spoken is how it's spelt).

spelling tagalog is fun though :XD especially the ones with the repeating sounds. (it seems like you can just keep going and going) its just damn hard to read. :darn

that's the fun of writing in tagalog -- we had incorporated the malay language. check out the indonesian and malay thread and see the similarities.

what I meant was that I'm embarassed because I don't want to appear noobish at Tagalog, if that even makes any sense. Like I don't even know a lot of the Tagalog slang so I probably suck at keeping up with a conversation with another pinoy.

I'll probably visit pinas next year and I'm excited, I haven't been there in more than 12-13 years. No doubt my cousins will make fun of my tagalog....oh well, that's to be expected. I'll probably brush up on my tagalog before I get there.

any tips? should I watch some old tagalog flicks, like Robin Padilla? man I love that actor.

@miyi- just talk to your family in tagalog. if you've got other filipino friends then speak to them in filipino as well.
