Of course garp had to let that happen to his son. He was aware that his son was a criminal and the punishments which ace's crimes involved. That said, it is not like garp did not have a choice to go balistic on everyone's asses, kick the crap out of anyone he ran into and free ace. he could have done that had he made the decision too. It's not like someone actually forced him to not suckerpunch sengoku and throw the entire platform on which ace was standing to WB was his choice too. IMO there is no way garp could not be considered a free person.

As for glory, I guess it depends on the actual definition you give to it. If you base glory on whether you are liked or not then glory is not particularly achievable for pirates. However if you consider glory as a separate thing from the public opinion there is no reason for any pirate to not have glory.

That said, I don't think glory and freedom should be weighted similarly when comparing pirates and marines. Setting aside that both are achievable for either side, evidently freedom and glory don't have the same weight or at least I would not think they do.

It really depends on how strong your abilities are and where such abilities can land you in the world of pirates and marines, position-wise. However, for whichever path one chooses, it's a long and difficult path up to the top.

Pirates would have to establish a name for themselves by fighting off other pirates, surviving bounty-hunter attacks and dodging the marines. Neither of these tasks could be considered simple. Luffy, for example, went through two of the Shichibukai, a World Noble, all three of the Admirals, Enies Lobby, Impel Down and most recently Marineford (among other things) to get to where he is now. Imagine what one would have to do to become like Whitebeard, Shanks or Doflamingo.

On the other hand, marines have to endure constant fights with usually brutal pirates. Chances of surviving that and/or not getting killed by Akainu for running away are unlikely. However, it may be easier to rise through the ranks if one possessed haki or some other special ability (not necessarily a Devil Fruit power).

Overall, I would probably choose to be a marine. I just like the idea of becoming an admiral and having the authority to destroy entire islands with a Buster Call. A nice nickname would be a bonus.

Pirates indeed seems cooler but I would stay on the side of the law be a marine. I don't know if it's the fact that I study law and wish to be a federal agent after I graduate =p...

I wanna have freedom and justice so i choose neither, bount hunter isn't my thing so that leaves a rich boy or a revolutionary.

I decided I'd be a happy by stander who would raise a Jolly Roger and by doing that I'd have a bounty increase everytime I own a pirate with a bounty

Even in those times , good pirates did not exist !

But even if we go into One piece frame , still being a Marine seems better .
I dunno y but i only like to be in controlled disciplined enviorment even though i hate it at the same time

P.S if i could choose , i wouldn't wanna be a Admiral / Whatever but oddly engh the Blacksmith is what i'd like to be

I'd prefer a marine....CP9 to be specific. Having a bounty would be a pain...in reality if ur bounty is too high u can trust no one to really have ur best interest in mind. Take robin's childhood for example. Obviously I wouldnt catch pirates who i deemed not a danger to the public

Hell, reading OP, there's just noway I can say that being a pirate is no fun. Even knowing those aren't real, I can't help wishing that I'm one of the SH crew XD

In normal sircumstanses I'd say I would be a Marine to catch criminals and inforce justice, but it won't be bad to be a pirate like Luffy.

A pirate's life is the epitome of freedom. I would not want to be under the strict orders of any organization.

The problem with marines is that they believe in Absolute Justice. Akainu destroys a ship full of civilians because an Archaeologist might be on board and reveal what a rotten organization that the World Government truly is. It would be interesting to see how many marines turned into pirates because the World Government is more corrupt than the Pirates. Drake sounds like he might be a marine that got too tired of the World Government's corruption. Kid said that "We might not be the nicest people, but we have our charming side." Seeing how I couldn't stand follow the orders of a corrupt government, then I would either go for a pirate or neither. If I had a choice of what type of pirate I would imitate, then it would have to be Trafalgar Law.
