@zimbardo
Well not that I agree but I haven't done enough research into that to argue much further.

Yeah, consciousness has been found in other animals. The method used I believe was seeing if said animal could recognize itself in a mirror for example. Dolphins, elephants I think have as well but it's not on the same level as humans. We're conceited yes, but it's not without reason. In terms of the brain and functions, aren't we more advanced and mature than other animals? Claiming that humans are in reality no separate from any other animal because there are a few similarities is imo, an oversimplification of the human brain. For instance, take current generation of smartphones or even computers compared to those of the past (when they were first produced). Yes both generations are still phones without doubt but they're far from being the same thing. Other animals compensate for this lack of advanced intelligence with their advanced senses and bodies.

Still doesn't feel the same to me. Because I believe him knowing how it will pan out doesn't change that he allowed for us to choose. The main point being that he could've decided to alter things to go exactly as he wants but didn't. I think you already got my point though, just disagreeing so it doesn't seem like a matter of not portraying my thoughts clearly. I also got your point but still disagree so we'll simply have to agree to disagree.

But it does. Unless you believe that we, somehow, have a system of deciding things external to our nervous system? External to the laws of science?

Which would also cause it to no longer be 'free'.

I am a little confused here.

But surely, the zombie can not decide not to eat meat?

Also, before you find an example of one – I'd argue that this doesn't show free will, as that particular zombie would always have not wanted to eat meat...

The problem lies with how decisions are made in the brain – the brain receives inputs from the body, interprets them, weighs them up with the current state of the system, and then decides on the most suitable outcome – whatever that may be.

The outcome will always be the same, at that particular time, for that particular stimulus.

But being forced to do something isn't anything to do with 'will'.

Free will can not exist due to the way which you decide what you want to do.

It has nothing to do with what you actually end up doing in the end.

No one is arguing that someone else is making the choices for you – what I am arguing is that the 'choices' are not really choices in the first place.

Well, not in the way which enables them to actually fall under the most common definitions of 'free will'.

Was this meant for me Hll?
I am not sure that I was ever arguing for the existence of any gods – nor stating their relevance in the topic of free will.[/SPOILER]
@italizied
Tbh, I can't see this follows. Or perhaps more accurately, I can't see how such a statement can be proven. That's simply because we only get one chance for each particular stimulus. The best that can happen after that is a similar stimulus but with difference. No particular situation can be completely replicated and science prides itself on proof.
For example, put a guy in a field with a ball and wait for him to do something. For arguments sake, say options are to kick/interact with the ball, walk away or simply remain idle. Now for whatever he chooses, even if he was made to repeat this experiment, it's no longer the same because there's already precedence to the event that will factor into decision making (either in conscious or scientific method). Even if a different person is brought in, it wouldn't be valid because it's not the same thing. The first experiment (and each subsequent one) will always be different. The experiment also demands on a single individual. The only way such a theory can be proven is if the exact same thing is repeated which isn't possible. So where is the proof for this when a particular reaction to a particular stimulus never occurs more than once?

@takneeque
@zimbardo could you please explain(once again if i have missed it already)what you mean by free will and why you think there is no free will for an individual.
Certainly.

Free will, to me, would be the unconstrained ability to decide upon what one wishes to do - without the constraint of necessity or fate.

This is impossible as the brain will always determine the desire of the individual.
It, in itself, is constrained by the laws of physics – and will perform according to a specific set of rules.

The brain doesn’t do things randomly, but instead weighs out actions according to its layout, chemical and electrical state.

Even if it was random – and not deterministic – it still wouldn’t leave any room for freedom in the will, it would be ‘random will’…

I would like to give an example to the contrary.Say,I am hungry and I want to eat but I don't.Or I am sitting but for no reason I stand up.That is a choice I can make. What do you mean when you say we don't?
As I said above, this doesn’t rely on what you actually end up doing in the end.

Even if ‘free will’ could exist, you still could have the situation where you want to eat, but don’t.

Choices, unfortunately/fortunately, are not free of the systemic constraints which the brain lays upon them.

@Holt
@zimbardo
Yeah, consciousness has been found in other animals. The method used I believe was seeing if said animal could recognize itself in a mirror for example. Dolphins, elephants I think have as well but it's not on the same level as humans.
That is one method.

Other examples include empathy (seen in dogs, monkeys, rats, crows…), willingness to suffer for others not to (a great example in monkeys), recognising inequality and suffering jealousy…

It seems that almost every time we try to find an example of ‘higher functioning’ which can separate us from other ‘lesser’ animals, we always end up looking a little stupid when another animal appears to be able to display similar behaviours.

In terms of the brain and functions, aren't we more advanced and mature than other animals?
How are we judging ‘advanced’ or ‘mature’?

No, our brain and functions aren’t necessarily any more advanced (and certainly not more mature) than other animals – some of our circuits may be larger and more complex, but I’d argue that this is due to us having different requirements for our system.

For example, our cerebral cortex may be more highly developed then in other animals, but it is by no means unique.
It isn’t even the most convoluted – whales have a much more convoluted cerebral cortex, with a far larger surface area, their brains are also far larger – now I believe that they have fewer neuronal connections (not sure), but is this where the intelligence hides? Or is it rather that they have evolved to deal with a different set of needs and desires.

Also, each of the components which make up the system are not unique to humans – it is often purely a matter of complexity/volume.

That said – bigger isn’t always better
And more complex doesn’t necessarily mean ‘better’ either…

I believe that the areas of human neuronal anatomy that we deem to be more ‘highly developed’ are purely to deal with different needs, similarly, areas which are ‘less highly developed’ would be again due to us not needing to deal with certain things.

Other animals compensate for this lack of advanced intelligence with their advanced senses and bodies.
Intelligence is just one aspect of the brain – these ‘advanced senses’ also rely on specific areas of the brain to function.

The fact that the animals may have advances where we don’t flies in the face of this human grandness.

Still doesn't feel the same to me. Because I believe him knowing how it will pan out doesn't change that he allowed for us to choose... I think you already got my point though, just disagreeing so it doesn't seem like a matter of not portraying my thoughts clearly. I also got your point but still disagree so we'll simply have to agree to disagree.
Yeah, I think we are at an impasse.
You see a ‘choice’ where I see that none could possibly exist.
It is ‘proven’ by our understanding of how the brain functions.
As a crude example – consider the brain as a computer.
You input a question into the computer, it will weigh up the choices, choose the most suitable one at the current time, and give you a response/action to take.
The brain works similarly to this.
Now it may appear that the computer is ‘thinking’ over the outcome, but the outcome is already decided before you input the question.

In the example above, the man’s decision to ‘kick the ball’ or not – relies on his current mood (dictated by the central nervous system), it also relies on how he perceives his environment (dictated by the central nervous system), what happened last time he kicked a ball (brain), what he thinks will happen (brain)…
Perhaps last time he tried to kick a ball in the park he accidentally booted it into the face of a nearby child, or he shamed himself in front of someone he was trying to attract. Things like this would be weighed up by his brain and would dictate what he decides to do or not.
Now you may see choice here – thinking – but it is no different from my computer analogy above.
The second time, there would be the added condition of ‘last time I kicked it and nothing went wrong’ or ‘last time I walked away and never got to kick the ball’ – these would be new things to add to the brain’s computation of what is the best course of action – but the fundamental working would be the same.
Repetition isn’t necessary as we have a pretty good idea of how information is stored, accessed and transferred in the brain.
Greater understanding of the working of the brain would surely help our understanding of the complicated thought processes in decision making, but they wouldn’t remove the fact that the brain isn’t really ‘free’ to do whatever it wants – at least not in the fundamental way we are considering ‘free will’ in this argument.

Well I believe in god.It looks like people think that god is jackass or evil but in what way ? Because there are rapist, murderers and psychos are causing the suffering of other people ? Or because people dies because of sickness and starving ? Honestly I wouldn't blame god for these. As you can see almost all these bad things also caused by other people.Let's assume there is a god,God gave you will to defy him,yet people can't overcome their own selfish desires. It is easy to say "why do you let this happen god ?" or "God is evil for letting that happen" but in reality,no matter if there is god or not, there is only one evil in this world;people of selfishness. So tbh I do not think we can say "God is evil" because of all this.

Yes other animals also have consciousness but even our closest kin chimpanzees need millions of years of evolution to reach our intelligence level. Our complex emotions and sociality can't be seen in any other living. We have the ability to solve complex problems and perhaps we will solve death one day(with our technology we actually did solve it,we can make human bodies) this alone exceeds even the nature. Some astrophysicists claim that perhaps there is no other species clever as humans. So why did human progress this much ? why human alone ? what is life ? why did living even exists ? In the end cells are a system in which the chemical reactions take place right ? why did this system started to behave and became more and more complex ? and what is the consept of live ? it is not just chemical reactions because unless outside intervention, those reactions ends at some point.Imo this is not chance.

Edit:Sorry if I made any typo I am kinda busy,I just want to point out few things :)

But ‘desire’ =/= ‘need’.
Humans may desire the answer to questions like this, but it isn’t like we necessarily need to know them.

Interest may be an awesome thing, but it is only interest.
We need to know who we are. Where do we come from. Think from the perspective of a child who does not know who his/her father is. Wouldn't he/she feel compelled to search for his/her father?
According to some branches of physics, so has the universe.
But physics need proof. Religions don't. They only need faith.
Also, with our current physics, we're still several century away from knowing where the universe came from. Mostly because we don't really understand what time is. Strange, since we're using time in almost every scientific research. When we calculate rate of change of something, we usually do it with respect to time. But we still do not know what time exactly is. All we know that it flows, from present to future, according to Einsteins block of universe it may also flow from past to present. And it is relative. Recent studies suggest that the graph of time may bend if it is influenced by extremely high gravitational force. But we don't know how why it flows, what are the forces that lead to time's start and etc etc...
I don’t really need for life to have any significance either… I am happy with my life being completely insignificant!
You don't have to question why you were born? I guess that is a good thing. But I cannot help wondering about he reason behind my existence.
But the fact that you can only ‘hope’ that he doesn’t judge people badly for these actions, makes one worry that there aren’t other things he is also judging you on, which you have no knowledge of.

I mean, how does anyone know what a god is, or isn’t, judging them on. Maybe he takes great offence to people wearing shoes, or eating carrots, or speaking Dutch…
If a heaven does exist, what is to say that when you reach the grand golden gates you are not turned away at the door for wearing the wrong kind of hat? Or not waking up each morning to smooth Jazz?!?
I would be honored to be judged by a divine being provided he judges everyone equally and takes consideration to everyone's situation.
Again, I ask the question of how can you know this?

I don’t believe that there is much ‘freedom’ at all in choice. Well, any feeling of ‘freedom’ which you may experience is but an illusion.

You may think you ‘choose’, for example, what to eat each day, but surely a mosquito also ‘chooses’ which poor sod to bite…

If ‘free will’ did exist, then surely it wouldn’t rely on one knowing of its existence for it to take an effect or not.

Also, belief, by its nature, isn’t a choice. You either believe something or not – It’s like love, you can’t choose who you love and who you don’t.
Okay, the concept of free will............
You know before Darwin came with his evolution theory, he noticed something. Flamingos living in a certain island is a bit different from flamingos living in another island which might be a few kilometers away. Now he thought that the Flamingos' living in Island 'A' have been living here for many generations. Tell me why? Why some flamingos' of island 'A' doesn't move to island 'B' when both Island have the environment for Flamingos' to survive? There are some difference in both islands. And just because the flamingos' are living in the same island for many generation, they evolve to cope better the environment of that island. Let's consider about humans. Put 100 human in Island 'A' and 100 in Island 'B'. And both Islands have similar environment. Then see what happens after 100 years. You'll find people in Island 'A', that migrated from Island 'B' and vice-versa. Human can chose to migrate, and Flamingo's cannot. I guess because, we have free will?

I don’t believe there is anything special about homosapiens.

Certainly not evolutionarily speaking – evolution has not favoured homosapiens.
We are just as evolved as the next species, it is just our own egotism which makes us feel we are special.
Why H.Sapiens happened to be the most evolved species? I mean, we're in a position when we can dominate other species, right? You know before, Triassic extinction, many species were more evolved than human ancestors. Why all of them got wiped out? A lot of natural events occurred and after all that, H.Sapiens looked to be ahead of other species. Why? What favored them? Why natural events favored them?

I don’t believe that this is so.

Look at people giving money to a poor beggar on the street – is this a profitable business? It isn’t like this is likely to result in a ‘good’ outcome for them (they will be [whatever they gave away] poorer at the end of the day).

Sure, there are some assholes around – but generally speaking, I give most people quite a bit of trust to ‘do the right thing’ in the end.

Maybe I am naïve?

Maybe my trust in humanity is misplaced?
Then tell me, why there is so much discrimination? Why wars take place?
And we're generally ass-holes. We're happy as long as we're not discriminated.
I hope not.

I’d rather no one ended up burning for eternity.

I can not think of any sin which should be worth an eternity (not a fortnight – a literal eternity!) of pain and suffering.
I also don’t think that a lack of punishment clears a bad action’s worth.
I am not talking about eternal burning. I think even Satan should not be punished for eternity. But those who did something wrong should be hold accountable.
But I’d rather that they experienced this punishment in this lifetime – rather than risking the chance that they may not suffer it in the next.
But with our wonderful law, this is very unlikely.

Sure they can consider themselves religious.

They are following what they believe their god wants them to do.
And they'll still be judged if god exists.

Punishment should always be relative to the crime – even if it was to save himself, I don’t see how his life should be worth more than another.
I mean, someone was trying to kill him. And he killed that someone to save him. His intention was not to kill but to protect himself. Would it be fair to punish him?
Theoretically, the law is there to protect everyone. But I will submit that it tends to be somewhat unequal in how it is enacted – depending on who is being judged and for what reason.
This, however, is a societal issue – not a religious one.
But you want everyone to be judged by this law.
But what punishment should that be.
How would I know? I didn't claim myself to be a god.
And who should submit the punishment and judge the crime?
A divine being, who is merciful and doesn't have double standards.
Please don’t allow me to force your hand – by all means believe whatever you want to believe.

If you can’t find answers in religious texts, widen your search field. Find reason for yourself. Don’t rely on the views of others to dictate your beliefs.
I started the topic to discuss about god's existence. That's all. I am not being forced by anyone, and I'm not trying to force my belief on to someone either. I apologize if it appears this way.
Please do not misunderstand me.
I don’t believe you are any more ‘obsolete’ than anyone else.

I really didn’t intend to make it appear that way.

If I truly thought badly of you, we wouldn’t be having this (rather long) discussion.
It's alrite. I did not mean it this way. I was saying that, your arguments tend to imply that I am a very religious person. Which I am not. In fact I can be considered as an almost atheist according to my beliefs.
I see God as a fake entity made up by ancestors to explain how things happened, which evolved into wanting to control the masses
Which means, there is no punishment for murder, if the murderer is not caught. Should it be this way?
What would you say to those people, who did not get justice hear, and believe that god will deliver them justice. What would you say to them? It's just a futile belief? Should it be just a futile belief?
Well, she could have been made fun of for being fat, or for being ugly...any number of things. Are any of them really appropriate? No. People reacting that way to hijab are just xenophobic. All of that has nothing to do with taking exception with Islam or other religions.
She was not made fun of. She was insulted. More than that she her religion was insulted. And everyone around enjoyed. I don't want to talk about what actually they said, But it was very indecent. And I wouldn't be surprised, if she starts to hate Christianity and Christians for that.

Lots more text follows within the spoilers...

But physics need proof. Religions don't. They only need faith.
And this is why I’d rather trust physics to try and find an answer to the question.

Also, with our current physics, we're still several century away from knowing where the universe came from. Mostly because we don't really understand what time is. Strange, since we're using time in almost every scientific research. When we calculate rate of change of something, we usually do it with respect to time. But we still do not know what time exactly is.
Well, who knows how far away we are – it is possible that someone may even find the answer within our lifetimes… Or perhaps we will never truly understand…

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Einstein first postulate the existence of space-time in his theory of
special relativity? It’s just recently where we have been able to confirm his hypothesis.
I’d rather not get into a physics discussion, however, as I don’t really enjoy arguing things where I quickly can become far out of my depth.

You don't have to question why you were born? I guess that is a good thing. But I cannot help wondering about he reason behind my existence.
I hope you find a good answer to your question.

For me, I don’t imagine there is any grand scheme behind my existence.
Certainly not a big question of ‘why’ (knowing my parents, it was probably purely accidental).

I know nothing about Darwin’s flamingos.

But there could be many reasons why the flamingo’s may not wish to migrate – for example, maybe there was no need to. If both islands had everything that the flamingo’s needed to survive, why risk the, possibly, difficult and dangerous crossing between the two islands.

And maybe some flamingo’s did move from A -> B (or vice versa), evolution isn’t often that speedy a process. How genetically dissimilar were these 2 flamingo populations?

It is possible that they were still quite similar, and had only small adaptions suitable to fit in with the various differences between the islands (perhaps slightly different shaped beaks to deal with a different food supply, or longer legs to deal with deeper waters?).

I am sorry to say that I do not really know enough about this example to be able to give you much of an answer.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this again isn’t really an example of free will.

There are also far too many things to consider in trying to determine what caused them to move from island A to island B.
It is also entirely possible for the flamingos to choose to migrate, should conditions either force them to need to - or cause one island to become more desirable than the other.

Why H.Sapiens happened to be the most evolved species?
Again, we are not the ‘most evolved’ species – I am not even sure what that would entail.
It just happens that we have evolved in a different way from, let’s say, an ape or an octopus.

We have evolved in relation to different pressures.

Our ability to
dominate other species
is just due to the usefulness of our intelligence combined with our tool use. As a species we can occupy quite a wide range of niches and technology allows us to occupy most of the other ones.

Why would a whale need to ‘dominate’ a tiger? Or a mouse ‘dominate’ a caterpillar?

You know before, Triassic extinction, many species were more evolved than human ancestors. Why all of them got wiped out? A lot of natural events occurred and after all that, H.Sapiens looked to be ahead of other species. Why? What favored them? Why natural events favored them?
Again, this isn’t how evolution works – things don’t really ever ‘stop’ evolving. These other species were not more evolved than the ancestors to humans, they were just evolved in a different direction.

Why they died out and others did not is purely due to the fact that a change in environment – a fucking huge asteroid impact, oceanic acidification, mass volcanic activity?!? – made their evolutions less suitable than those of the creatures who survived.

Then tell me, why there is so much discrimination? Why wars take place?
And we're generally ass-holes. We're happy as long as we're not discriminated.
I believe this to be quite a negative outlook on humanity – it is one I can not share.

Wars are a much more complicated issue – due to the numerous reasons why they can start.
But I’d say that they still tend to rely on the few (powerful) forcing the hands of the many (less powerful) – resources, ideals, misunderstandings… the flavour of the poison is less important.

I don’t think it is fair to judge the many on the actions of the few – as heinous as those actions may be…

I am not talking about eternal burning. I think even Satan should not be punished for eternity. But those who did something wrong should be hold accountable.

But with our wonderful law, this is very unlikely.
Which means we should try and change our system.
I also believe people should be held accountable, I am just happy with humans doing it – judged by your peers, so to speak.

I mean, someone was trying to kill him. And he killed that someone to save him. His intention was not to kill but to protect himself. Would it be fair to punish him?
This is quite situational.

I would certainly want him to be taken to court.

But you want everyone to be judged by this law.
Yes.
A divine being, who is merciful and doesn't have double standards.
I am not sure what standards a being like the Judeo Christian God could possibly follow.

I am so sorry for the wall of text, I went a bit overboard, hope at least 1% of this is useful to you.
I don't really know much about Hinduism. So, yeah thanks for putting your input on this topic from your point of view.
And what makes you think that being born a pauper or having defect makes your life any less meanigful, than someone who is born rich?Granted society does try to force us into seeing a life full of material accomplishments to be the best one, but is that really true?
But the thing is, our purpose is to become a valuable micro-organism, doesn't sound very appealing. Does it?
A kid with defects may not be able to lead a normal life like someone else, but even here, the kid himself, can do things that no one else could, he can learn and read about many things that you will never come to know of otherwise, he will also get to spend a lot more time with caring and kind people which you may not normally encounter,.
But how would that be fair?
then seriously what does God need to exist according to you?
So people who did caused sufferings to others doesn't get away.
And heaven and hell does not make anyone a good person, or even encourage anybody to be a good person, fear is a good motivator to control someone, but when the object of fear is..so intangible and hard to imagine without someone giving you a vivid description, then obviously it is not going to affect anyone any which ways.
At the end of the day heaven and hell is just something that humans invented to deal with their death, because like so many such as yourself, death and leading a meaningless existence frightened them, and this helped them to deal with it.
I'd accept anything you said here.
Muslims are supposed to follow some five acts or something like that, what does that have to do with evolution? or any scientific theory for that matter, and no religion says that the world is flat, I think, at least Hindhuism or Buddhisim, does not try to define the shape of the world, and lol, Hindhusim divides the world into Kalpas which are even longer than 2 billion years
Excuse my poor knowledge of Hinduism. But people worshiping gods by making their statues does make sense to me. Perhaps you can enlighten me? Also himduism divides people by class. People of higher classes(Brahman and Kshartiya) don't touch anything touched by the lower class. Why such discrimination?

In the meantime, the feelings of my appetite being met when I eat my favorite food is real, the feelings of attraction when I see an cute girl is real, and so are every other things in life which give me joy, even if life is utterly meaningless in the grand scheme of things and my existence won't make a difference, neither of these two will change the joy I feel when I do what I like or the feelings of triumphs over overcoming any struggle are real, overall it is not the world which gives your life meaning, rather it is you which give the world meaning.
After all, the whole world that you see around you is made by none other than you.
Then tell me, what about the people who have suffered without their fault? Can you blame a girl who was raped for seeing the world a disgusting place? Can you say to her that, "you weren't raped. Only you think this way. It was actually consensual."
Well firstly, I think that if someone can do a crime, he should be allowed to do it, what should also be allowed is for that person to be caught and judged according to a given set of laws concerning said time, region by laws set by humans.
Theses laws are here to legalize the wrongs done by the rich. Also what happens when the person escapes law? Like no punishment for murder if the murderer is never caught?
Then believe in the exitence of God, reading your posts you seem to be someone who is worried about, how people who you consider to be good are not rewarded and those who you consider to be bad get to live properly(I don't know why being good needs a reward.), if believing in a God who is all love and sunshine, helps to calm your woes then do it, you don't need any organized religion to tell you this, and they have no right to stop you, at all.It is your life, beleive in the notion of God that you like and want to.
Such god probably doesn't exist. Even if a god exist, I'd probably end up in hell anyway.

First of all, regarding the possibility of the existence of God or not, I have reached the conclusion that he does indeed exist. Everything in this world just indicates that there is a divine being who had created everything. As some have pointed out, how could this vast universe with all its complexity have existed all of a sudden and from nothing?
There should be a beginning to all beginnings, and this beginning has no beginning nor an end. In other word, there should be one God who has created everything in this universe from the tiny brain of an ant to the huge stars in the galaxies. In my opinion, this is the only explanation which makes sense.
Moreover, if this is the only life that we will live and if there is no afterlife and no God to judge us, then, as Philia pointed out, how could those who had their rights taken and were persecuted attain their rights? How could those who are doing barbaric crimes be judged fairly for their wrongdoings?
The only reasonable answer I have found is that there is God and there is afterlife in which people are judged according to what they have done in this current life.
Also, I want to point out that, people feel a sudden need for God when they are in dire situations and are near to death. When they are saved and are safe again, they either believe in God or they just ignore their inner pleads just some time ago. This happened and does happen to many people and is not by any means a coincidence. I myself when put in really difficult circumstances feel that uncontrollable, unconscious need for great support when I realise that no one, no science, no human, no nature, no statue would help me or save me.

Another thing is, we are not only a bag of organs working synchronously. We have a soul, a spirit. As much as our brains and body need mental and physical support respectively, our spirits or souls need support and maintenance also. The only way to maintain and support your soul is through religion, or more specifically, through belief in God. How is that? Personally, I tried to do many things which would decrease any stresses and dissatisfaction I feel, but nothing was as effective as praying to God along with doing good deeds. I tried to listen to music but it just increased my dissatisfaction the more I listened to it. I tried to socialize with people more than usual but realised that the more I socialise with people the more I become dissatisfied and stressed as I start to discover their endless problems. Studying does not help either as I already study a lot and it only increases my stress. So, for me at least, praying to God was really effective and the more I pray the more I am satisfied, the more I am stronger and able to go on and continue working harder and harder, and simply, the more I am happy.
People can argue that it is merely psychological that I feel that way, but every person I know, religious or not, who tried to do what I have done ended with the exact same result that I ended with.

Moreover, there is the debate over which is more correct, science or religion. I believe that both go hand in hand and are inseparable from each other. Religion supports science and science supports religion. The thing is, one should find that perfect religion that really conveys the word of God and 100% supports science and does not contradict it in any way or form.

Regarding the topic of free will, I strongly believe that we, humans, do indeed have free will. Maybe we do not decide where to be born, how do we look, where would we die, etc, but we surely decide what to believe in and what to follow and pursue in life. On a simple scale, you choose whether to eat an apple or an orange. There might be external influences, such as your sibling trying to convince you to eat the orange, but at the end it is your decision. It is your decision to fail or succeed at studying. It is your choice to be teacher or an engineer. It is also a murder's decision to kill. He or she chose that. Now, some would argue that people are sometimes forced to steal or murder, but is that really because they do not have free will? No. They still have free will, and those forcing them (or maybe putting them into dire situations) to steal or murder also have free will through which they chose to suppress or control or influence others negatively. In turn, those suppressed have the choice to either rebel against such tyrants in one way or another or just give up. And as g01 said, the only evil in this world is human beings. In other words, we abused free will to the point of corrupting this Earth. Even nature is not safe from us and our devastating choices.

Lastly, I want to add that there are things in this world which are beyond our reasoning and understanding. In other words, if there are things which we cannot explain through science, that does not mean such things do not exist. It only reinforces how really limited our knowledge is. We can continue researching and researching and trying to find answers for questions such as the nature of our existence and how the universe really came to be (the Big Bang really does not explain anything in my opinion) , but there will be always a limit to our knowledge, even if we tried to research everything for millions of years, there will always be a limit. Of course, that does not mean that we should stop trying to find answers, but we should not also strongly believe that we can find an answer to everything through science because that is not the case at all as our brains are limited. The only way to obtain answer for the hidden, unattainable things is, in my opinion, religion (the true one that is). How do we know which religion is true? In my opinion, if it does make sense, answers all of my questions, makes me satisfied and happy, does not contradict with science in any way, then this is the right religion in my opinion. It makes a person complete spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Anyway, this is my opinion on the subject. And sorry for the long text.

Well, I'd just drop the topic of physics and evolution. I don't know much about them anyway.

Which means we should try and change our system.
I also believe people should be held accountable, I am just happy with humans doing it – judged by your peers, so to speak.
And those who our law cannot judge? They shall do whatever they feel like?
You would like everyone to be judged by this law?
Even though it is imperfect. Doesn't see everyone from same point of view. And people can skip punishment. Someone escaped the country after committing murder. Shall he remain free?
I am not sure what standards a being like the Judeo Christian God could possibly follow.
I'm not sure either.

You would like everyone to be judged by this law?
Ideally, yes. That would be best in my mind.

Even though it is imperfect. Doesn't see everyone from same point of view. And people can skip punishment. Someone escaped the country after committing murder. Shall he remain free?
Perfection is an impossibility.

Strive for perfection and you will always fail.

So, yes, although imperfect, I still desire everyone to be tried under the same laws and obey the same rules.

Will these rules allow some to have an advantage over others? Perhaps, but that is no reason to discount them altogether - all it means is that the laws need to change.

Should someone who escaped from murder escape from suffering the consequences? I am sure you already know that my answer will be a resounding 'no'.
Of course not.

But that is not the same as the question "will someone who has committed a murder always suffer the consequences of their actions?".

Unfortunately, as much as we may wish it to be otherwise, life isn't 'fair'. It never has been - and I doubt that it ever will be.
Some people will always be able to rig the system.
Some people will always be able to get away with breaking the law.

It is not a question of should they be allowed to or not - obviously the vast majority (probably everyone except the people in question) will argue that they shouldn't.
But rather it is a question of what can we do to make the system better - make it more fair - make it more representable.

Also... On the topic of perfection, one of my favourite speeches [made worse through the pure power of 'English dubbing']:

I am so sorry, if this wastes your time Philia, it is super, super wordy, I will try to lessen my stance next time, if there is one.
That it not an example that animals don't have free will, for starters animals are some of the most beautiful creatures in the world, because even the worst of them don't really take more than they need, the flamingoes probably come under this dogma.
We humans are different as we not only take what we want, we also take what we may need in the future, I guess this is where 'human being's take more than they need' comes from.
But this has nothing to do with my definition of free will,at least,in both cases, the flamingoes made a choice to not leave and stuck to it.

Why all of them got wiped out? A lot of natural events occurred and after all that, H.Sapiens looked to be ahead of other species. Why? What favored them? Why natural events favored them?
You cannot say that we are the most evolved, if you have seen Doctor Who, the Doctor himself is from a species which is leagues ahead of humans, and I think it is a bit too soon to make statements that we are favored, mollusces have lived on this earth for longer than us, as have earthworms, we have been here for a barely 10,000 years, and frankly we ourselves might be the cause of our own extinction, if we are not careful,if such a thing happens, then we are certainly not favored at all.
If it is simply staying on this planet, then probably earthworms or mollusces are the truly lucky creatures.

She was not made fun of. She was insulted. More than that she her religion was insulted. And everyone around enjoyed. I don't want to talk about what actually they said, But it was very indecent. And I wouldn't be surprised, if she starts to hate Christianity and Christians for that.
Do you live in Turkey? Pardon my intrusion, you seem to a be a bit turkish for me, and you should probably tell your friend to not worry, whatever she has heard about hijabs, plenty of people I know have heard worst, at the end of the day as long as she does not meet those pricks on a daily basis, she should not start to hate Christianty.

I don't really know much about Hinduism. So, yeah thanks for putting your input on this topic from your point of view.
Your welcome hope it has increased your interest, or at least made it clear to not view Hindhuism in the same way as some other religions, even the circumstances of Hindhuisms birth are vastly different from Ahbramic religions.
But the thing is, our purpose is to become a valuable micro-organism, doesn't sound very appealing. Does it?
Well not to you, but you don't seem to a be a person who is either a pauper or someone rich(right?), whatever purpose you have or your life may hold, or make it meaningful, you shouLd try and find meaning.

But how would that be fair?
Depends on what you think is fair,is being deprived of the same joys and benefits of other your age fair? I don't think so, is it unnecessary? Maybe or maybe not, the person born with a defect can be the key to helping many others who are born with the same defect later on, in that way, 'xxx' person being born with a defect can have meaning, even if it is something that will make others sad.
Anyways as I mentioned in my previous post, in such cases it is better to try to see the bright side, after all, moping and crying about it, will not change your predicament, but it can make your suffering slightly more fair..?
So people who did caused sufferings to others doesn't get away.
But such a thing is impossible,if you have seen Death Parade, you will know the problem with such beings that judge people, for starters you want to have a God who will judge people equally and consider their situation's, but that does not guarantee anyone will be punished? Frankly if you consider everyones situation every one may get scot free, as any person who has done even the most heinous crime may have a good reason to do so.
For example, one that is close to the city that I live in, Mumbai, it was attacked on 26/11 a few years back, only one person was caught, and he has since been hanged, if were to ever go to a judge who is merciful and takes into account the peoples situation, then I am fully sure that, that terrorist will be allowed to go into heaven and it was his families poverty which made him a terrorist, even the most heinous murderers, may have a good reason to do his deed, at the end of the day, no creature does anything without reason, or even sheer pride for that matter, consdering peoples situations allows you to emphatize with people, but empathy is no way a good criteria to judge people.

Rules are, and there are no impartial rules at all, every rule that you can think of, is being impartial to someone, so in conclusion a God may not help in ensuring people who caused others sufferings don't get away.

At the end of the day, if a God is truly supposed to judge people wrong doings, then I don't think that convenient morality will come into play,it can't, I maybe sounding a bit rude, but at times people suffering and other commiting crimes is necessary for the world, even if it produces negative effect, take rape for example. thanks to that, we know how sex can cause immense pain to someone and we can at least focus on coming up with a system that is geared to making sex more consensual, it also can be a great catalyst for change towards perceptions of women in society, if this change is effected by a horrible incident of rape, then I don't any God can punish that person for having an overall positive impact, inspite of ruining someones life.

I get this idea of someones contribution towards making the world a better place being a standard from Hindhuism, there are two Avatars of Vishnu, one goes by the name of Lord Parshuram, a magnificent warrior who was a complete maniac, he massacred 21 generations(excluding females and children.) of Kshtriyas and as a result mistreatment and misuse of the postions, while ignoring the duties given by their privelege was almost stopped, another Avatar called Lord Krishna, who you may have heard of, spent most of hid adult life, killing those people who had different views from him, and would kill to make their views dominant, Lord Krishna did the same thing that these men did, and he created his Dharma, which still continues today predominantly in the form of the Gita, both of these people performed acts which my todays standard were atrocious, but both of them are given veneration, because their acts led to the world becoming a better place, hence they may not be given any sort of punishment, inspite of their acts

Which is why, if punishment needs to given, it needs to be done so by humans.
Firstly, let me tell you how Hindhuism was formed, it actually comes from a name given by Muslim invaders to the people living beyond the Sindhu river, as a slur of tongue it became Hindhu, and everything ranging from their traditons to their laws as well as their beliefs was contained in this term, later on with the British and other European colonizers who came here and viewed everything under the spectacle of religion, made this word into a religious term and called the religion Hindhuism, so the whole term of Hindhuism is more cultural than religion, not that it does not have religions undertones even if certain beliefs are prominent enough to be called religions in their own right, like Sikhs, Buddhist and Jains, all of the beliefs in India have their source as the Vedas and come from there, so in the sense this term of Hindhuism is more a religious term than a cultural one.
Why am I telling you this?
Well because there are two ways at looking at things in Hindhusim religious, in which case, barring a text like the Manu Smriti, none of the Indian religions encourage discrimination and denial of opportunites to people, frankly every religion stresse on people being unique and special irrespective of their background. So no religion coming from India, encourages discrimination.

Now if you look at it in a cultural way,you can say that the Indian society is castist and dominated by caste, looking at the way things are today(in some states.), one may even get confirmation that Indian society is a discriminatory one, but the whole concept of caste came only 2000 years back and even then it was more a broad classification, and there are plenty of people who are from supposed lower castes who have risen to prominence and are given respect, honestly, if you look at the terms which distinguish people, Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya. and Shudra, there are similar to terms like Scientists, General, Soldier, moreover they are just terms denoting designations, and with the upward mobility of people from lower backgrounds, as well as many authors who visited India before the Europeans, even the Muslims who came and razed this country, there is hardly a mention of a system of discrimination, and it is frankly illogical for something like that to be India.

Honestly, the only people who actually criticize Indian society for a caste system are Westerners and the way the caste system is alive today, with the worst offence in it, i.e stopping someone upward mobility based on their background, was done by the British who themselves divided many Indians into various castes, and gave only certain jobs to certain castes as they saw fit, as these guys ruled most of the country,so the caste sytem comes from the British, you can check it out for yourselves on wikipedia, caste became an identity and a means for social mobility and is honsetly something that poorer states in my country still have not gotten past,

Then tell me, what about the people who have suffered without their fault? Can you blame a girl who was raped for seeing the world a disgusting place? Can you say to her that, "you weren't raped. Only you think this way. It was actually consensual."
No, that girl has the full right to hate the world, as I said if that is what she wants to see the world as, it is her right to see it that way and no one should change that.

Theses laws are here to legalize the wrongs done by the rich. Also what happens when the person escapes law? Like no punishment for murder if the murderer is never caught?
This a legal argument that I am not equipped to tackle, whatever the answer is, relying on God is not going to make things any less "unfair" as you see them, these laws are made by humans, and need to be changed and updated, even physical laws which are supposed to be absolute can be overthrown, so why not human laws.
Now I know it may be difficult, but...not impossible. In fact making change like this is what I belive to be one of the goals of existenc, to constantly improve and become better or die out,.

Such god probably doesn't exist. Even if a god exist, I'd probably end up in hell anyway.
I don't understand why a God convenient for you, won't exist?

Was this meant for me Hll?
I am not sure that I was ever arguing for the existence of any gods – nor stating their relevance in the topic of free will.
Since I need to backread, and am feeling a bit lazy,I think someone put God together with free will and how you can't have free will without God, since my definition of free will, unlike yours, does not dismiss it as an impossibility due to lack of choice, but asserts its presence due to the fact that, basically we can rebel/choose not to undertake certain decisions, I brought God into this

Actually I have been trying to come up with a response to what you said, and I can't seem to do so, I think we can both agree that trying to make either of our defintions of free will to be the right one, is a bit pointless, as our lives are going to play out the same even without knowing such a thing, than it would knowing such a thing, so instead I would like to take this opportunity to understand why you feel that having our choices limited, means we don't have free will, I encountered someone previously who had these same ideas, but for some reason we never discussed about this, inspite of enjoying each others conversations quite a bit, so can you please explain your stance to me, as wordily as possible, as to why you think humans don't have free will.

How is it God is willing to torture his followers to prove they're loyal no matter what or flood the Earth because it was too full of sin long time ago, but he chooses not to do anything now? We can say God is not as good as everyone claims.

It is chance. Urey-Miller experiment created life by replicating how they thought the Earth's early atmosphere was like. From there life evolved into what it is now in order to survive. Humans progressed likely because they had to progress - the environment forced them to become more intelligent. Put chimpanzees in a similar or same situation as humans as they branched out, and we'll see how long they'll need. Evolution isn't a hard thing to understand, it usually involves genetic mutation that if it's good for survival, allows the being to stay alive and reproduce, thus passing on the gene. The ones who don't have that mutation, and it's needed to survive, will die off.

Humans who had the genetic mutation for straighter back was more likely to survive and pass on that mutation over humans whose backs were arched due to easier time seeing predators.

You don't have to question why you were born? I guess that is a good thing. But I cannot help wondering about he reason behind my existence.
Basically to ensure the survival of your species, and because your parents either conceived on purpose or by accident. Other than the survival, why you were born is up to you. Were you born to please God? To become an innovative inventor? To become an actor? It's your decision. I find it silly that people need to justify why they exist, especially with God. Animals don't seem to care about that, and they're perfectly happy. Or were until humans started screwing up their environment. I see people who wonder about the reason behind their existence or think God is part of the reason as people who can't think for themselves and/or were brainwashed at early age.
There should be a beginning to all beginnings, and this beginning has no beginning nor an end. In other word, there should be one God who has created everything in this universe from the tiny brain of an ant to the huge stars in the galaxies. In my opinion, this is the only explanation which makes sense.
No it doesn't. You can't claim there should be a beginning or a start, invalidate the Big Bang theory, and then claim God has always existed. That's double standard. Something had to have created God, otherwise you might as well acknowledge that the Big Bang might have happened without a beginning. Either everything should have a beginning, or you can't be selective about what has and doesn't have a beginning.

Hmm..actually, do animals really do not believe in God? We do not seem to have any kind of proof whether they believe in God or not, because either case could be true.
And I think you are a little bit generalising here. Not all people started to question the purpose of life or ended up believing in God because they cannot think for themselves or are brainwashed at an early age. Many people, including me, do extensive research into this matter. A deep research into everything in order to answer the dwelling questions in our minds. And it is human nature to search and keep searching for answers for everything. Otherwise, our world would not have reached the development it is experiencing nowadays. So, it is natural for a person to ask him or herself what purpose does life serves. Totally normal.

No it doesn't. You can't claim there should be a beginning or a start, invalidate the Big Bang theory, and then claim God has always existed. That's double standard. Something had to have created God, otherwise you might as well acknowledge that the Big Bang might have happened without a beginning. Well, I did not invalidate the Big Bang theory. It is plausible that it happened and occurred, but in my opinion, it does not answer the questions regarding the nature of our existence and its purpose.
I could simply ask, what was before the big bang? What was before the thing before the big bang? then what was before what is before that is before the big bang? And so on.
A never ending cycle, that is.
We could expand this analogy to the existence of God argument and ask: who created God? Who created who created God? then who created who created who created God? (Now that is confusing XD)
Again, it is a non-ending cycle. For this reason, at least for me, a plausible explanation is that there is a beginning to all beginnings which would end this never ending cycle. And, in my opinion, this beginning should be omniscient in nature to be able to initiate this grandiose universe. At university, our biology professor was asked during a lecture on evolution by one of the students the very same question that I have written above: Who or what caused the Big Bang? The professor did not know how to answer her and paused for few minutes, then he answered that scientists will one day figure it out.
In my opinion, even if they figure it out, another question will arise: what was before that event which was before the big bang? Again, a non-ending cycle.
So, as I mentioned in my previous post, there are things which our human minds cannot and will not be able to comprehend due to our knowledge and minds being limited. At least, this is what I think is the case.
I could be wrong, but that does not necessarily mean I am not right. Anything is possible. I think we agree to disagree on this matter.
But at least, I think we do agree on the fact that we, human beings, are not omniscient in any way or form.
Anyway, at the end of the day, every individual follows what she or he believe is the best for her or him, so whether one believes in God or not is completely up to the individual.

Well, but isn't this more or less what happens with Islam in many places except that in a much greater extreme? Islam is overtly not a violent religion. It takes a solid 5 minutes on google to find more than enough information on that. However a terrorist goes somewhere, blows something up and suddenly all muslims are seen as terrorists. With this girl it is not different. of course, she wasn't blown up but it is by no means a stretch than in her mind this is an Islam vs Christianity thing. And yes, it might be in her mind and it might be on her and whatnot... but it's not really fair to blame her considering other overreactions. It's would be the same as any other overreaction if anything.

so instead I would like to take this opportunity to understand why you feel that having our choices limited, means we don't have free will,
Because it makes the idea that you could have any freedom in your decision making purely artificial.
It reduces your brain to a system which will always give the same response when it recieves a very particular set of stimulus in a particular time.

I like the analogy of a computer as, although somewhat simple, it does demonstrate how, no matter how complicated the underlying system (and no matter how long the time working out all the possible outcomes), the decision/outcome will always be the same.
This is because, like a computer, the brain works things out by drawing upon already existing networks/connections/etc. to work out what would be the most suitable/ideal course of action/decision.

- As the decision will always be the same, it is as if there wasn't any real choice in the beginning.

I am not sure I can be any more wordy at this point in time - I have a mug of tea and a glass of whisky in front of me...
and kinda feel like letting my mind wonder for the rest of tonight...

As long as we are on the topic of who created God and all that, I think this quote is a bit interesting:

But, after all, who knows, and who can say
Whence it all came, and how creation happened?
the gods themselves are later than creation,
so who knows truly whence it has arisen?
Whence all creation had its origin,
he, whether he fashioned it or whether he did not,
he, who surveys it all from highest heaven,
he knows – or maybe even he does not know.”

@M3J
What makes you think god is willing to torture his followers? I am saying that most of the 'bad' things happens because of humans not because of some god.
Well about flood, firstly if we are going to discuss this then we have to assume there is a god but the moment we assume that there is no point of discussing it.Reason is, god is pure goodness and all those people were acting evil and warned by god. As you can see we cannot make much comments about it because we have only one source. And according to religions with the last prophet(it change religion to religion) god stopped interfering humans(but not complately I suppose).

No you can't say like that, there is no proof that if it was chance or not. Don't forget Urey-Miller experiment made in perfect conditions to create amino acid formations, if there were any electronegativity molecule (like oxygen) other than nitrogen then there will be no amino acid or living. I am not saying it is false but we can't act like it is completely right, Urey-Miller experiment is only one possibility. Anyway that doesn't explain my question, all chemical reactions can continues as long as right there are right conditions but when it comes to livings, the moment those reactions ends the moment that living dies. And why does all those reactions happens, why in cell?
And we can't say "we had to evolve", what about other specieses that lived with our ancestors? Why there is a huge gap between other specieses? What makes us evolve so much but not other specieses?

Seeing as your post was directed at M3J (and not me) I will allow him to reply to the bulk of your comments.

I did, however, want to knock this bit on the head one more time:
Why there is a huge gap between other specieses? What makes us evolve so much but not other specieses?
Although I have stated it before, I feel that one more time humans, Homo sapiens, are not more evolved than any other species.

Evolution doesn't work like that.

It is a constant process.
Humanity (and everything else) has not stopped evolving.

We have not evolved more than any other species - we have just evolved in a different way.

The way that we have evolved has opened up many avenues to us (seems that intelligence is actually a pretty useful trait), and it has enabled us to control the environment in ways which other animals can't (not that I imagine any of them would even want to).
This has enabled us to occupy many different places - and survive in many different climates.

But, so has my good friend 'the mosquito' (figure of speech... We are not friends - I denounce and reject myself for stating that... I'd kill off whales if it meant that mosquitoes also went extinct at the same time...).
The mosquito is a truly cosmopolitan creature - is this a good marker for how evolved a species is? Survivability?

No.

Although evolution pushes traits based on survival - through processes such as natural selection, genetic drift and random mutation - it doesn't mean that you need to be able to survive any and all conditions - only the ones which you are currently exposed to.

It doesn't mean that you have to be the fastest, strongest, toughest, smartest...
Those traits may come out of the whole process, but then again maybe not.

There are many ways to ensure that you can pass on your genes - perhaps there is a suitable niche for a weak, slow, puny, stupid, creature.
Maybe there is a particular niche where other characteristics, less expected, may be useful.

To add to what zim is saying, not only are we not more evolved than other species but there isn't a "direction" to evolution. Species aren't heading in any particular direction, they are simply adapting to their environment over very long periods of time. That is why velociraptors evolved into birds and neither really is more evolved or superior to the other.

I think I didn't use right words and you are right but my point was that our way of thinking, solving problems, questioning our own existence, our complex emotions and sociality are second to none. That's why I believe there is more than a chance.
And zimp if you wishes to add or correct something about my post then do it please. I really like the way you think :nod
