Re: Another newbie asking for reviews ...and a question

Heyas, I’m a newbie too so I’m not sure how much my word helps but it looks good so far. The translation seems pretty accurate and it makes sense, even though I haven’t read the series. The only thing I an suggest is possibly putting the speaker’s names in front of their parts, just to make it a little more clear as to which bubble’s which.

Re: Another newbie asking for reviews ...and a question

Hey! Thanks for the comment!

And yeah... I just finished the entire 50 pages of the chapter. I'll try to be less lazy this time and insert names on the next one.

Some help with lines from Ao no Exorcist.

Hello~
I decided to start translating Ao no Exorcist chapter ten ((here), and I've run into some problems on page 4. I'm not sure if I'm just overthinking it or I'm translating something wrong but they're not making sense. Any help is absolutely wonderful

Machine translation rarely makes sense. You should try translating on your own. With a dictionary, of course. At this rate, I'm surprised it made sense for you on pages 1-3.

Also, be careful when transcribing: it should be ケガしてるんです and まだ乳臭い。。。

Re: Some help with lines from Ao no Exorcist.

I am translating it on my own, I'm just using an online dictionary cause the dictionary I have is too general and doesn't have 3/4's of these words.

Although granted, with the line: Koitsu hako no mama demo heiki da Made chichikusai ko wa hikkon dena?, I put it through google cause I had no idea what was going on with it.

And thanks. That happens sometimes when I'm going little too quickly.

Re: Some help with lines from Ao no Exorcist.

Watch out for double meanings. 乳臭い子 means useless inexperienced kid - a kid that is still sucking on the teat. Well you can break that down into its parts, but it won't make sense unless it's put together.

and it's まだ。 also learn to recognize and parse the particles. It's not going to make any sense if you jumble up the phrases.

Saint Seiya Episode G - chapter 69

Hi! Thanks in advance for reading this.

Since this is the first time I'm translating without the safety net of a second version in another language to fall back on, I'd like to ask if there's someone with possibly more experience who could go over it?

Raws are here (password: mangahelpers).

Aiolia (a human) just fought and defeated Hyperion (a titan god). Every character has something called "cosmo" and/or "dunamis", which are basically the same thing: life-energy. Hyperion used to be imprisoned in a seal, but was attacked after he'd just gotten free. After that, he was revived by Pontos (the ancient god of the seas), who shared his dunamis with him.

I think that covers pretty much everything you need to know for this chapter.

第69話 黒き水に従う者
Chapter 69: The one who obeys the dark water

1 =======================

君が聞こえる
Aiolia: I hear you...

流れ落ちる血の音が広がる一
Aiolia: the sound of running blood fills the air...

いや違う。。。暖かい命の通う血じゃない
Aiolia: no, that's not it... not the pulsing blood of warm life.

酷く冷たく黒い一
Aiolia: this is cruel and cold... dark...

2 =======================

黒い水が広がる
Aiolia: black water is spreading...

3 =======================

黒い。。。海。。。
Aiolia: a dark... sea...

海が大きく波うって一
Aiolia: ...with huge waves!

Aiolia: it's creating a shape...

Aiolia: Pontos!!!

Shaka: we haven't confronted him before... he's far away, somewhere high...

Pontos: that one's body, his cosmo, everything about him...

我のものである
Pontos: ...is mine.

その血肉を現世に蘇らせたのは我だ
Pontos: his present blood and flesh were revived by me.

姿が崩れる。。。幻影。。。!?
Aiolia: he looks like a crumbling... phantom...!?

生も死も全てを手にする権利がある
Pontos: I have the right to hold all of his life and death in my hands.

8 =======================

その者の生も死も運命もー自由に出来るのは
Pontos: I am free to create... his life, death and destiny...

我だけだ
Pontos: ...by myself.

バカ言ってんじゃねぇよ。。。
Aiolia: what are you saying, idiot!...

神だからってなんでも許されると思ってんじゃねぇ!!!
Aiolia: I believe that even gods can be forgiven!!!

オレとヒュペリオンは互いに運命を賭けて闘った
Aiolia: Hyperion and I fought each other, putting our destinies on the line!

9 =======================

(?) お互いの大切なモノを守る為に闘ったンだ!!!
Aiolia: (?) we fought to protect the things that matter to each of us!!!

二人の運命の間に入って邪魔をすンな!!!
Aiolia: the relation between the fates of two people can't be intruded upon!!!

Pontos: it's all a part of our great plan!

ヒュペリオンが我のモノになる事はー
Pontos: the fact that Hyperion was created by me...

現世に還って来た時から決まっていた
Pontos: ...and that he returned to the present world had been decided by time.

10 ======================

Pontos: I'll show you. God by the name of Hyperion...

その全てが我のモノである事をー
Pontos: ...all that is mine...

Pontos: ...my dunamis.

我が元に還り
Pontos: I'm the reason he's here...

その身の内にある燃えあがったコスモと
Pontos: there's a cosmo flaring inside that body...

真なる力デュナミスその全てを
Pontos: the true power of dunamis, plundering...

13 ======================

奪い取る
Pontos: ...everything in him.

なンだと。。。!?
Aiolia: what...!?

運命などではない初めからその為に闘わせてきたのだ
Pontos: it's nothing like fate. you've been fighting because of that all along.

所詮お前達人間など
Pontos: after all, you're both like humans...

神の計画に組み込まれているだけだ
Pontos: ...just ready to be included in the plans of the gods.

14 ======================

お前がヒュペリオンに死を与えた事によって神格は破壊され
Pontos: you will be given death by Hyperion. you'll be destroyed by a deity!

高められたデュナミスとその肉体だけが残された
Pontos: only the enhanced dunamis and that body remain...

我が力なら肉体の破損など問題になる事はない
Pontos: thanks to my power, the damage to his body won't be a problem.

再生が可能なものだ
Pontos: he'll be able to regenerate.

これからヒュペリオンは我が命に従う神となろう
Pontos: thus, Hyperion is nothing more than a god under my command.

お前は
Aiolia: you...

Aiolia: that only helped...

15 ======================

Pontos: war will go on. that is what the gods have planned.

お前達は

Aiolia: tell me...!!!

ねぇ!!!
Aiolia: what...!!!

よっ!!!
Aiolia: to do!!!

19 ======================

自分以外の全てを道具としか見れねぇヤツが
Aiolia: other people can't show you the way...

ヒュペリオンと同じ神だなンて言うな!!!
Aiolia: the same applies to Hyperion and the gods, no matter what you say!!!

ヒュペリオンはなぁ最後まで自分が守るべき民の未来を信じてた!!!
Aiolia: Hyperion! to the end, he believed in the future of the people he should protect!!!

お前の言う運命ってのを自分で選び取る為に
Aiolia: he risked his life...

命を賭けたンだ!!お前なンかの為じゃねぇ!!!
Aiolia: ...in
order to choose the fate you speak of on his own!! not for the likes of you!!!

オレ達の闘いの間に神の計画なンか一切なかった!!!
Aiolia: whatever schemes the gods have, they had nothing to do with our fight!!!

20 ======================

ヒュペリオンがお前に敗れたのは弱かったからではない。。。ヒュペリオンには封印が残されていた
Pontos: Hyperion wasn't defeated by you because he was weak... in order for him to leave the seal...

肉体の再生は我が手助けしたもので全力で闘える体では元々なかったのだ
Pontos: ...I had to help revive his body. so, from the onset, the body with which he fought with all his power wasn't his.

21 ======================

偉大な戦神の記憶も奪われ人と闘うのに都合よく調整されていたーそうでなければ
Pontos: his memories as a great god of war were also stolen. those of people and battles were skillfully modified... otherwise...

人が神を超えるなど不可能
Pontos: ...it would have been impossible for a human to surpass a god.

お前達の間には最初から
Pontos: the will of the gods...

神の意志が存在していたのだ
Pontos: ...has been among you all along.

22 ======================

本気になった神の力を止める事など
Pontos: stopping the true power of the gods is...

不可能だ
Pontos: ...impossible.

If anyone could shed some light on what's written on the first panel of page 9, it would also be wonderful.

Thanks again!

Ah... that makes a lot more sense now.

And yeah, I'm working on that one now. Thank you (both) for your help. :3

First Translation, and I need some help on some sentences

So I'm working on Baka to Test to Shokanjudya ch1 as my first full manga translation. I'm about halfway done, but during the translation I came across some sentences I could quite get. I was wondering if someone would be willing to take a look and give some advice about what I'm missing.

Thanks!

So to start off:
些細な障害を乗り越えた
"[Akihisa] has climbed over a slight obstacle"
純愛ラブストーリーである!
"This is a pure love story!"
These two sentences come right after one another and I was wondering if I didn't get the first one right because it's so out of place. It takes place as the narrator is introducing the character Akihisa Yoshii.

ワシじゃから良しとしても
"You know, you can call be Yoshi"
At first I thought Akihira was saying that the person he is talking to should call him Yoshi (his last name) but noticed the Kanji are different.

振り分け試験の勉強だってあんなに頑張って。。。
グームばかりしてた
気がするけど。。
"Even though I just played games instead of studying, I got a feeling about his one."
I was really guessing with this translation, it would be nice to know if I got it right before releasing. Also couldn't tell if it was the character's thoughts or the narrator.

一年間よろしくのぅ!
"Nice to meet you!"
I don't really know what the ichinenkan is doing here. Is it a Japanese thing? Like "Its been a year."?

女子にばかり気を取られて
"Looks like the girls are distracted.."
Again another sentence I think I got right but really can't tell

ここまでの流れで
""
I got nothing for this. Something like "Until here the stream flows" but really I think it has some other meaning

皆さんにも食べていただきたいです
"I would want to cook food for everyone"
This is part of another introduction and the character is saying how much she like to cook. I might have gotten this right, because its the only think that makes sense, but shouldn't it be 料理していただきだいです?

胸は災いの元
胸は災いの素
These are two different titles, but they seem to have the same meaning... Is there some Japanese nuance I'm missing here?

対岸の久保
"The other shore's Kubo"
Yeah thats got to be dead wrong. I'm thinking its a play on words that has to do with 対岸の火事

Last one:
ボクをこんな姿にしたクラス全員。。。
"Everyone in the class making my look this way..."
試召戦争に負けて補習室送りになればいいのさッ!!
"We lose the Shishyo War and [got nothing]"
I don't know if I got the first sentence right, but I can't even tell what the second sentence is trying to say here...

Ok thats all of them for now. Thanks to who ever has read all the way down this far into the post and sorry for having so many questions.

Re: First Translation, and I need some help on some sentences

...Next time, please label at least the page number, or even better, just put the link to the raw with each page. -__-"

No, it actually isn't "two" sentences, but one long sentence.

You don't know the thing about verb clause thingy (don't know what it's called as well) then, I assume? Sometimes, if you have a plain-form verb in front of a noun, may it be from another short clause or just a single verb, that verb usually describe the noun that follows. For example, if you have 私は魚を食べた。 (I ate a fish.), you can switch things around into 私が食べた魚 (note that I just switch the word order and slightly change the particle), and it'll mean "the fish I ate". "~I ate" just basically tells you what kind of fish you're talking about. .__."

This one is the same. 些細な障害を乗り越えた just describes the 純愛ラブストーリー, nothing more than that. So it's supposed to be something like "It's the pure love story that was rid of trivial obstacles".

ワシじゃから良しとしても
"You know, you can call be Yoshi"
At first I thought Akihira was saying that the person he is talking to should call him Yoshi (his last name) but noticed the Kanji are different.
良し=いい = fine, all right -_-"

So, it's actually something like "Even though I'm personally fine with (the way you greet girls),"

振り分け試験の勉強だってあんなに頑張って。。。
グームばかりしてた
気がするけど。。
"Even though I just played games instead of studying, I got a feeling about his one."
I was really guessing with this translation, it would be nice to know if I got it right before releasing. Also couldn't tell if it was the character's thoughts or the narrator.
...Erm, in fact, I want to say that...you got it completely wrong. .___."

It's the same case as the first one you asked. ゲームばかりしてた気がしたけど will be "though I felt that all I did was playing games.", so the sentence is supposed to be "I even study so hard for my exam...even though I felt that I've been playing games all the times."

一年間よろしくのぅ!
"Nice to meet you!"
I don't really know what the ichinenkan is doing here. Is it a Japanese thing? Like "Its been a year."?
Isn't that what school system is usually like all over the world? You're in the class for one year, and you change class next year, with all new classmates. Basically, that 一年間 just tell you, "in this one year (where we'll be classmates together, since next year, you'll be changing class again and maybe you might not get the same classmate as you do this year), something like "Let's be good classmates together for this year."

女子にばかり気を取られて
"Looks like the girls are distracted.."
Again another sentence I think I got right but really can't tell

Isn't the sentence supposed to be 女子にばかり気を取られてないで 静かにしろ!...since that's what's in the raw, so yeah...you got it another way around. It's supposed to be "Don't get yourself distracted with all the girls (and be quiet)" (note to GUYS! -_-")

ここまでの流れで
""
I got nothing for this. Something like "Until here the stream flows" but really I think it has some other meaning
ここ, here, isn't talking about the place, but a time. So, ここまで here wouldn't be "Until here", but rather "Until now". And water isn't the only thing people can put with the word "flow" or "current" though, like...ever heard of the "flow of time"? That's what it is, something like "From what I've seen (in all these times) up till now".

皆さんにも食べていただきたいです
"I would want to cook food for everyone"
This is part of another introduction and the character is saying how much she like to cook. I might have gotten this right, because its the only think that makes sense, but shouldn't it be 料理していただきだいです?
Well, very close. She indeed is saying that "If there's any chance, I would like to cook for everyone", but the thing is, she "wants them to try her food", thus the 食べていただきたい (would like (you all) to eat it).

"Everyone in Class F who made me into this..."
"can just lose in the Shishyo War and get themselves sent to the detentsion room!!"

Don't know if that help you much, but...-_-"

Time for the second half!

So I didn't know wether I should start a new thread for this, but I figured since it was dealing with the same manga I should keep it in the same thread.

I finished the second half of バカとテストと召喚獣ぢゃ and have a lot less questions this time around, but still hit some problems I couldn't get my head around.

First of all I had a lot of trouble with page 14 ( link )
My first problem was with the first bubble on the page:
具体的には教師の雑用係だな。。。
"In order to keep order, I have to be the teacher in charge of these odd jobs huh...."
力仕事とかそういった類の雑用をこなすのが観察処分者だ
"Heavy labor and among other things, doing odd jobs is the Disposable Observationist"
I tried to loosely translate the meaning I was getting out of the sentences, but I think they need some help.

My next problem was with the last bubble:
いいか
Alright already
明久の試召戦争は唯一物に触れることができるんだ。。。
"Akihisa's Shokanjyu war is the only ?feeling thing? we can do...."
。。。ってことはだな
"[got nothing here, really need help with these types of statments]"
My main problem here is the verb 触れる. From my understanding it means to touch / feel, but that doesn't seem to make much sense. I must be missing some meaning. The verb appears on page 15 (link) as well.
小っちゃい吉井君を触り放題!!
"I am going to ?feel? tiny Yoshi-kun as I please"
And page 16 (link)
いいか
"Look!"
召喚獣が物に触れるってことはだなッ。。。
"The summoned monsters that are exposed to these things will..."
And as for the rest it may not be a perfect translation but, its at least readable enough. Thank you again!

GTO 14 days - V.1.Chp.1 P1-3

Bored at work today and thought I'd give it a go. I know what everything means but just getting the right English translation is a little odd for me. I hear, speak, and work in Japanese on a daily basis but never have to translate really so...Also, not sure how to translate sounds.

Sorry I don't have the raws.

Re: GTO 14 days - V.1.Chp.1 P1-3

The translation looks pretty accurate and it has good flow. I tend to be more careless and leave the correction and flow check to proofreaders. Most people are too lazy to include both Japanese and the location of the writing, but I'm sure it helps to have both for Manga Editors.

As for sfx, most of the time I translate them into onomatopoeia if possible. If not, then I just write them in romaji.

I go to this website for the onomatopoeia but they can be different depending on the context.

is more like "That is a common prank"

私も地蔵様に学ラン着せて「パンチパーマ」なーんてよくたってました
It's a goddamn statue! lol you can't give it hair cuts
so this would go better as "I dressed it with the school uniform and put an afro wig on it"

I've only checked this far, but I gotta go to sleep. I'll come back to it later.

And please, make spaces in between the lines where needed to make it look cleaner and easier to read!

"I guess you've always been slightly out of it."
"..But"
"every time, just when you're really needed, you're always appearing by my(our?) side.."
"and Its true that that side to Hikari often saves me(us?)."
(maybe you want to change 'side'..its repeated in my↑)

Translation checker for Fiona's Travels

I think this is the most appropriate sub-forum...

This is not really a recruitment topic since i'lll be the only one to have something from this and you.. well most likely nothing.

Anyway i started studying Japanese at university this school year as single major. I had some contact with Japanese before and went through some learning programs as well.
My level of Japanese... well under new translators system that MH is trying to use now i wouldn't grade myself any higher than level D translator but i prefer to consider myself as a total trainee since the translations i'm doing are my first and i have some problems with my English as well.
Because of some reason i'd like to advance in Japanese as fast as possible. I'm not looking for impossible (like master Japanese in one year) but i'd like to do as much s I can to get closer to my goal. Knowing myself i know that the best way for me to learn a language is to see it in practical use so aside from listening i think that reading and translating is what will help me to understand Japanese on different lever and help me to memorize all the kanji faster.

Main thing:
So i decided to translate. However i don't think that translating dialogues (what you usually get in manga) is what will help me, mostly because lots of words never get to be used there and the same goes for some sentence structures. So i decided to translate something that should still be something i'm capable of translating but is meant as a written word. And this is where Fiona's Travels come in. Fiona's Travels is a diary written by ... did not managed to find that out (because i'm not really interested) but its Kodanshas thing and is being "released" under good!afternoon in form of blog (you can see it here). I decided to translate one entry per day until i get up to date ( already failed at that ... i'm one entry behind >_<). Logically my translations are far from accurate, and there are already some sentences where i'm 95% sure i've translated something wrong, so this is where you come in.

Your job:
To read the original entry, to read my translation and point out the main mistakes. I don't want you to go to much in the details, it would be waist of your time because, like i said, i'm a beginner. Just point out the things that are translated completely wrong and greatly change the meaning of what was written in original and what i translated. Of course I'll be glade if you'll warn me about my repeated small mistakes as well or any other effort you'll put in translation checking. But overall i don't want this job to be of any extreme burden but more like and extra cherry on the top.

Personally i'd prefer someone that's really confident with his/her Japanese but considering where i'm standing right now I'll welcome anybody who's willing to take the job.
I would prefer someone who's willing to see this until the end, but if you're willing to help at least one month you'll make me really happy.

Also i decided to compile the entries at the end of the week (Friday) since i'm sending the entries to my friend to proofread them - i'd like to improve my English through this as well (you probably found out by now that i'm not native speaker) - and she has most free time on weekends. You just tell me if you want to see my translations before or after proofreading.

I can't offer anything in exchange, but if you hold at least a tiny interest in this please contact me (you know ... reply to the topic, PM me .... oh and in case you prefer my mail: biontenz at gmail.com)

If you came this far .. thank you so much for reading this extremely long essay.

Re: Translation checker for Fiona's Travels

Umm...but you do know that even that journal isn't completely written language, right? Like "なんだこの国…ホント世界征服できんじゃないの?" (if it's converted into written language, it would be できないじゃない ._.") and "あ、会ってみてー…ユキヤロウに会ってみてぇえ…(*´Д`*)" (would be みたい)

Why not try to post your translation here, put the prefix as "translation checking" and try waiting for someone rather than waiting to get someone to check personally? I mean, there's nothing wrong with getting a personal translation checker, but I think it might be faster, easier and you can get more than one translators to check and maybe add to your translations or the edits. .-.
