The one most qualified should have the position that MOST suits them.

Same for anyone in the crew.

Sanji has been portrayed perfectly for his role in the crew

I think Jinbe fits the first mate position more than any other (I've already made my points on this)
I can't see anyone but Jinbe being the First Mate.

First, he's the second strongest. You can tell how far ahead he is of everyone else.

Secondly, he has too much respect from everyone in the crew. Zoro has been the voice of reason in some occasions, but nothing that really puts him in a position of authority.

Because its a Sanji thread I wanted to avoid breaching the subject as much as possible.

I just think of all the positions the top 3 fighters not named Luffy have solid positions that 100% fit them.

Sanji being the Second mate, Military advisory fits him and he has been portrayed as such.

I agree with you, though

Jimbei does fit the role too, but don't think he will last long in position of that as given he already at or past his Prime while Sanji and Zoro are still growing, they surpass him not just in power, but in roles if comparing to Roger's Crew in similar vibe. Plus there are alluring theories stating Jimbei could past away and be first Strawhat to got out given his position and older age (Minus Brook with his DF as there is reason on him). Feels like Oda wouldn't change everything in dynamic after this late into the series even with build and hint on Jimbei joining in the future. He still sees Sanji and Zoro on leading position more with the crew more and them reaching their Prime given their younger age like the rest gives that.

Jinbe is 44, that's quite young for One Piece.
Still in range of Prime compare to others who reach there around his age. If we do another timeskip and he be in his late 50s or 60s, do you think he be stronger than rest of the Strawhats? Maybe few at best, but Sanji and Zoro would surpassed him given their younger ages and hitting more their Prime Years at that point and plus he already has his own legacy done during his time before joining the Strawhats unlike the rest who still growing their legacy to boot.

I wouldn't say jinbe is young by OP standards but 44 is probably around the time people in this series hit their prime. I would assume his potential for growth is at best not substantial, which isn't too bad considering the series is near it's relative end. Aging can apparently be relative in this series, with lifespans potentially going on as far as 150 for humans so there is a possibility that jinbe has more room for growth than his age would suggest. Still, on average it seems like characters do peak at around 45~ and can maintain their peak through their 50s and maybe early 60s. The exception to this seems to be big mom who remains a monster late into her 60s in spite of consuming her lifespan at four times the rate of a normal person due to her personal homies being there 24/7. Maybe lifespan does not have much to do with aging but still, it's astounding that she is alive at all. I still think brook is the key to defeating big mom, as killing her main homies is a huge blow to her lifespan.

True, but not everyone even in old age will still be stronger even as they used to be like Rayleigh even comments about not being flexible in his old age when facing Kizaru, so Idk if Jimbei will be an exception while true that Big Mom herself still maintaining her strength along with Yonkos (Minus Shanks and Blackbeard), don't think every old person will keep up their power in old age. They will be still strong, but Idk stronger than more younger and more Prime lvl ones.

Definitely, this depends a lot on each specific individual. Sengoku, garp, whitebeard... they all seem to have been affected by age mostly similarly so it makes sense their situation would be about standard (or even better than average). I suppose big mom is still a mystery in this regard. She doesn't give any vibe of having grown weaker in her old age for the most part. But she is 68, a full 3 years younger than WB was... So technically there is room for her to decline in a similar manner to garp, sengoku or WB yet.

Yeah though WB's case was mixture of something with ailment as without it, I think he would be more dangerous given how he is at the war. We never seen full power of Garp and Sengoku, but probably are a bit rusty given it been a long time since Roger, Whitebeard, etc. could give them a challenge in a fight. It really depends on person themselves which is why don't think we see a difference in Jimbei given he is the oldest if you exclude Brook due to his DF and preserve body on reaching his Prime and body limits as don't think he get stronger much unlike the others like Sanji, Zoro, and certain members. No doubt he keep his strength as someone not to be underestimated, but being physically oldest member who in Prime of Age unlike the rest, don't think Jimbei will be stronger than the characters in long-term.

Sure thing. Sorry about that, Goldb.

Btw seen latest episode and while we know Anime isn't canon on events, did they have Sanji did an CP Move in breaking the bamboo fence with Zoro? Looks like Ranakyu move that members, but more Advanced to it. Looks similar to that move Lucci use on Luffy in Enies Lobby? I wonder if this is hinting something on Oda giving new moves in upcoming fights as rare to see Sanji do long-range attacks from distance. Though then again, he did long range attacks during FI Arc against those New Fishman Pirates fodders from what was shown. So many this is a another new one perhaps? I honestly wouldn't be surprise if he can do more CP moves given he already knows a few of them.

The cuts where from Zoro, what was impressive was how Sanji's DJ was able to block the momentum of the bullets. Even though Zoro had already cut those bullets it was impressive that Sanji was able to block them without them damaging him.

I don't think this is an "authority" crew. They listen to Luffy...but just barely. It's more a group of friends, it will never be "first mate tells others what to do and they follow orders". I think it's wrong to think of the crew in those terms. Zoro would be the guy, but only for the occasional "if you take him back I'm out of the crew, we have to respect the captain" talks. Other than that, their roles are what they are. Cook, helmsman, doctor, shipwright, navigator, archaeologist, musician, sniper/liar, captain...and that leaves Zoro with no real role, so he's almost by default first mate. But again, it's not a "real" position in the crew.

Back to Sanji and what Moe is saying above, while I'd love for Sanji to fight Queen or King, it would also be cool if CP0 was still on the scene and Lucci goes after Luffy, but then "the Hunter" makes his return saying he doesn't get a rematch. Lucci would still be strong as hell now, stronger than he was back then, but Sanji taking one of Luffy's former opponents would be a cool moment.

Don't think Zoro cut all the bullets as Sanji also block and burned them down without issue. Both show-off their abilities without much effort to them.

That is true as usually Luffy is one in command while rest follow one another depending, but just saying Sanji and Zoro are usually one in action roles to lead the crew when Luffy isn't around and into battle. Being more like his left-hand man and right-hand man like King and Queen are to Kaido given how they lead the crew when Kaido isn't around. Speaking of which looks to be set who they face with interactions, Sanji vs King and Queen vs Zoro as implied hints looks to push to both of them. I would love ot see the return of 'The Hunter' again as well given this shaping to be big development course in everyone fighting in this arc.

Also I could see Sanji vs Lucci fight happening as it be interesting process if Luffy's crew being able to beat Luffy's former enemies and how strong they have become since then.

Nah, you're right, it's not a traditional crew where there's a defined authority. Luffy doesn't care to lead as much as he cares to hang out with friends, and the others are the same. There's a leader only when there's a problem or crisis, whether it be Luffy, Sanji, or Nami, and no one usually has any objection because of the trust.

Sanji led the faction that split off after Dressrosa because he was the strongest and smartest in the group, and no one had an issue with that. I don't think there's any hierarchy in the crew, with the only occasional exception being Luffy being the captain when he wants to make the final decision. There's way too much trust with each other, and Luffy doesn't mind taking orders from other crew members as long as it means their survival. Arguing about Sanji and Zoro's positions seem pointless tbh, because I think either can be first mate/right hand man, it seems to be interchangeable. Luffy implicitly trusts the two, and they've proven that time and time again.

Right, like how Luffy just said that they had to team up to beat Oars Jr but can now take on a Number by themselves, it shows their growth. And this would show Sanji's growth.

I know. Though thought your stating Zoro cut bullets on Sanji's side as just saying both took out the bullets, not one person did.

so, do you think raid suit is going to be a permanent power up for sanji or not?
I think it's going to be permanent. Sanji is lacking in CoA aspect and RS is a good alternative to enhance his physical power.
