I used to really like this pairing, but their relationship seemed to disappear entirely after the timeskip. I didn't want Hiro to use a fake death to draw them closer together like almost every other pairing but some meaningful interaction and development in the Alvarez arc would have been great

#17 Jellal & Ultear I used "&" instead of "x", because they are more of friends/partners in crime than lovers for me. What I like the most in their relationship is that Jellal didn't feel any grudge towards Ultear for manipulating him for years and he took all the blame on himself... Maybe even too much blame...

#14 Natsu x Lucy Ok, now that's the biggest surprise so far for me, I expected it to win knowing, how big fanbase it has here on forum I used to like this ship quite a lot in the past, until it change into endless fanservis and sexual harrasment (I just don't like this kind of stuff) + lack of romantic development from Natsu's side (I blame his immaturity). I just don't feel the chemistry between them But I still like their friendship and strong bond they share, so I see them as very very close friends with hints, that Lucy waits for somethig more #justmyhonestopinion #pleasedonthitme

#13 Gray x Juvia Another surprise, but not as big as earlier one. Even though Gruvia is used as comic relief for most of the series, I like those moments, when it's getting serious and Gray shows, that he may care for her and her feelings (I like especially the scene from omake '417 days', where Gray takes the scarf Juvia made for him). And for Juvia Gray is someone special - he broke her "rain curse" after all. Almost like in a fairy tale And they became canon at the end - congrats Juvia, he made you wait

#12 Loke x Lucy I like their relationship Celesial Mage - Celestial Spirit, but don't see any chances for romance here. Besides, Lucy's fight against Angel made me ship Leo with Aries and until now nothing changed in that matter.

#11 Kyoka & Seilah More like master-servant relationship, not my liking tbh But I admit it seems to be a strong bond.

#10 Wendy & Chelia The best result of GMG arc (not counting Sabertooth ofc ). They met and then spent only a year together, yet their bond grew very strong, to the point, they were ready to sacrifise oneself for each other. I'd add Charla into it too. She's always on Wendy's side, but scene with forming a circle in last chapters (when Charla invited Chelia in it) shows, that she holds the other girl dear too.

#9 Laxus x Mira After BoFT arc I used to ship Mira with Freed, but Miraxus convinced me to be the perfect ship for Laxus In Tartaros arc she was sitting by Laxus' not Freed's bed after all

I always pair up Mira and Laxus in my fanfictions cuz their ship just makes sense, but mangawise I like to ship people that have lots of interaction and these two don’t (which makes me lean toward Freed or Cana for Laxus). I do think PL Mira was jealous reacting to Laxus asking Cana to strip when she blew the lacrima. I loved Mira's Tartaros moment with Laxus at his bed side cuz they join some of my top favorite couples in sharing this moment:

1) Evergreen sat by Elfman’s bedside in Gmg

2) Lucy stayed by Natsu’s bedside in Alvarez (plus they had a filler hospital moment in Gmg too)

3) Elle sat by SiegHart’s bedside on the plane in RM

4) Mira sat by Laxus side in Tartaros.​

There's no romance between them at all, so this pairing is all about friendship. They are very close for sure, but not a brotp, not an otp... Just very close friends, just like everyone is in FT. Nothing special to me.

My guilty pleasure No seriously, for some odd reason I find myself liking this ship a lot, despite being an avid GruVia fan I'm not actually sure where i started liking it, but I really do think they'd look good together. Outside Juvia, the one female Gray spends the most time around is Lucy, and they have moments like these:

Which just makes them really visually appealing.
They have been shown to have pretty good teamwork when the moment calls for it, such as in the skirmish with Ajeel as they were leaving Alvarez:

And despite Lucy's constant saves by Natsu, Gray can also take the credit sometimes when it comes to saving her My favorite examples of this are in Edolas:

But there was also a more recent example in the final arc, when they were both combining efforts to save Natsu using his book (Another plus one for teamwork on the both of them):

Even though Gray is literraly the only other acceptable-canon male for Lucy in the series, I’m not too fond of it. It's probably around the same level as Naza is for me, but lacks the ToH moments that Naza got.

Early LoLu (before Loke went back to his player ways was better than Graylu) but Graylu is better than Lolu currently (as I guess it is still somewhat relevant). I dunno if I would ever ship Gray with Lucy (as an otp) even though I love Lucy and she's perfect for any man in my eyes (fight me). I shipped Gray first with Erza and now with Juvia while at one point with Ultear (cuz it’s basically Musica x Reina even though Graytear is a bit more brotp to me).

Nalu vs Graylu: The real difference

Here are my current reasons of not shipping Graylu:​

(1) Right off the bat, it reminds me too much of Musica x Elie, which had a potential to be a ship from chapter 10 when he tried to flirt with her. Later even though Musica had moments of saving Elie and talking deeply with her, Elie's main ships were with Haru and Sieg Hart.

(2) The dynamic itself, I think I could have shipped Graylu more at beginning (pre-Tenrou) when Lucy was more spunky/Happy-go-lucky. Now Lucy is more depressive/serious/quick to cry/broods (from watching herself die/losing Aquarius key/her Dad dying/fairy tail leaving). Gray is also more serious since tartaros. They need someone fun to push them out of their serious side. Juvia does that for Gray (it’s one way Gruvia is a superior Gray ship to Grayza and Graytear as well in that regard) and Natsu/Loke are more like that towards Lucy.


(3)The thing about Graylu is that it’s a sexy ship. They look good together. Plus Gray and Lucy are highly shippable characters. Gray has the most ships of any guy, and people want to make Lucy shipped with everyone (even though I have yet to find out why LaLu, Zerlu, and StingLu are so popular). GrayLu also doesn't have the immaturity that Natsu brings with him to Nalu or the stalkerish nature Juvia brings for Gruvia. In my opinion saying they are visually appealing together just feels very hollow in the context Mashima has created for it when there are richer ships out their for both parties.

A good comparison is the Graylu and Nalu moments in the latest Dragon cry movie where:​

A. Gray tells Lucy “you look good” in the stripper outfit at the beginning and later saves her in the bar. ​

B. Natsu asks her what he looks like at the beginning and at the end; they also have a close face moment that Wendy thinks they are about to kiss; he saves her 3 times; she cries resurrecting tears into his mouth, he falls on her after she tells him he looks like Natsu, and Natsu tells she (along with that blue offspring of his ) are a family. ​

(#3 continued) Speaking of hollow, GrayxLucy don’t have anything meaningful that couldn’t be with someone else. You could just as easily put Gajeel or Erza or Cana in those moments. While I don’t like LoLu.... Loke x Lucy have more unique moments with Loke Arc and Tenrou that are specifically theirs. Which now that I think of it there is another reason I don't like Loke x Lucy as he didn't react at all to Future Lucy's death, he just kind of stood there and shows Mashima drops when balancing a large cast. Gray literally never thinks of Lucy during any of his failed ice shells or almost deaths. Any time he’s in a serious moment he always thinks of a Natsu, Juvia, Ur/Lyon, Ultear. He also left without thinking of anyone after tartaros. So the Graylu bond tends to be more on equal footing as Wendy/a Erza (even if I hate to admit this as a devout Grayza shipper). While Nalu have numerous moments that have meaning.

One of Grays best relationships in the show. It could've worked honestly.

Something should have happened here, honestly. They're literally the Musica and Reina of Fairy Tail, it will forever bother me that Mashima never made these two interact more after Tenrou. The scene after Lost Ages was pretty beautiful though, along with Ultear appearing in his conscience when he was fighting Doriate in Sun Village, so these were pretty powerful moments.

That scene at the end of GMG, after Ultear's sacrifice... Damn, the feels.

A really unsung ship, and by extension one of Gray's most underrated interactions in the whole series, though that's more to do with them not being explored in depth. Which is kind of frustrating honestly. She's literally his master's daughter. The one woman who sealed away the demon that made his childhood a living hell, and who he owes his magic to. There is so much to discuss here between these two, Ultear asking Gray what kind of a mother Ul was, and Gray sharing what he knows about Ul. Hell, they could even include Lyon since he's also Ul's student, and have the three become really close.

Due to how little they got though. we're left with a limited amount of interactions between the two. The most famous of them being on Tenrou Island:

Gray had mistaken Ultear for Ur when he had first met her, which had led to a confrontation between the two where she lied to him that Hades was responsible for everything and that he could be killed if Gray used Iced Shell:

Gray saw through her ruse pretty quickly, and a fight broke out between the two Wizards:

And at the end of the fight when Ultear learned the truth about her mother, the two wizards made peace:

Afterwards, they had a brief interaction in the Grand Magic Games arc, where Crime Sorciere met with Fairy Tail to warn them about the danger lurking in the shadows of the tournament:

But of course, the greatest moment these two shared is after the Grand Magic Games, in the event of the dragon attack. A good number of people, Gray among them, had died due to the unforeseen catastrophe. But Ultear had undone all this via her casting of the ultimate time magic, Lost Ages. For the exchange of the user's life, time can be reset to before anything happened. The price Ultear paid for this was becoming an old woman, an act which several people were unaware of. Minus these two (Plus Jellal):

We also had this gem in Sun Village where she showed up in his psyche to encourage him to fight Doriate:

But in general, this ship really is a series of missed opportunities. There was a chance for them to interact in the final arc when Ultear appeared as a thought projection in Wendy and Sherria's fight, though I guess that was covered with Ur showing up as a Historia later on courtesy of Neinhart.
