Kaido is suicidal and is apparently one nut prone to negotiation. If possible, he'd go for the violence route. If not possible, he'd still go for the violence route. It's a bit of a mistake to think kaido is a logical fellow who would consider what he gains or loses. There probably wasn't a battle but it's still a queer situation. Perhaps shanks is just someone pretty much everyone has respect for and kaido decided to leave things or so
It doesn't have to be Kaido itself, I don't think a suicidal guy like him could organize a crew in divisions and be sophisticated enough to buy weapons/make deals for SMILE and god know what else
Kaido pirates are well organized, it doesn't have to be Kaido himself but could one of the disasters

As the Red Hair Pirates arrived in perfect shape I think there was no face to face confrontation and also no real fight. They likely simply escaped with a trick like the Curly Hats escaped Big Mom's ship. Shanks doesn't go for unnecessary fights, we know that from the first chapter.

The translations explicitly state that Red hair fought with Kaido.

I think Shanks is greatly misunderstood:
  1. When Shanks came to Marineford, he didn't come to negotiate, he simply challenged both the Marines and all the pirates.
  2. When Ace came to meet Shanks, his first reaction was to fight, he was already getting his sword ready.
  3. When Mihawk simply came to deliver a message, he was ready to fight.
  4. Can't forget his negotiations with Whitebeard, he raised his sword against Whitebeard. Whitebeard wasn't even the enemy, it was Blackbeard, yet he was willing to fight him.
  5. If we even go back to the first Chapter, we already see how ruthless the Red Hair pirates can be; they're the first we see and they could have just beat the pirates up without killing them.
Shanks is no saint or pacifist, he'll fight if necessary and he's pretty ruthless; it's even more unlikely for Shanks not to fight Kaido, and more so with his constant resorting to using his sword as a solution or problem-solver.

That doesn't really make sense. Shanks was the one who intercepted kaido to prevent the latter from attacking WB. Kaido wasn't there for shanks so shanks escaping with a trick wouldn't matter since he wasn't kaido's target wouldn't matter.
Also, shanks isn't that cowardly. He's state his piece and clash if need be. He

You do realize you just concurred with what I stated, right? See below for the bolded.

Kaidou was after Whitebeard. While Kaidou's hobby is finding ways to die he still runs an empire on the side. When Kaidou failed to achieve his objective thanks to Shanks' intervention he pulled back because he had nothing to gain and a lot to lose (e.g. military power to keep his territories under control) from continuing his confrontation with Shanks.

I didn't actually concur. Obviously we're not certain of what exactly happened but we know shanks was the one who intercepted so he wouldn't have pulled back or moved on without ensuring he achieved his goal. Kaido on the other hand is a suicidal maniac and his theme is apparent to engage in violence when there is or isn't an option.
Also, the other point doesn't really follow. Kaido went after WB to get a fight, you mention that he has an empire but did you forget that it didn't bother him in the slightest? He was already going to fight regardless. Seeing another capable opponent should have been tempting. Kaido didn't have any more to lose against shanks than he would've against WB. Also, he had just as much to gain; that is, an opportunity to have a swell time in battle, and maybe die if possible

Yes, you did. You just haven't fully realized it yet. Kaidou was gunning for Whitebeard but Shanks stopped him. When attacking Whitebeard was no longer feasible Kaidou pulled back. He wasn't there for Shanks and had nothing to gain from instigating a full-throttle confrontation with his fellow Yonkou.

Kaidou's life doesn't strictly revolve around suicide. He wants to unleash a massive war and is building an army to do it. Kaidou also enjoys some of his islands, like the one X-Drake attacked. All these are benefits he has earned thanks to running his own personal empire, an empire that is built upon the formidable military power he owns.

Again with this nothing to gain. What was he going to gain from battling WB, who was not only another Yonko but was tagged the strongest man in the world? You're implying kaido was facing some kind of loss if he'd fought as compared to fighting WB. Kaido wasn't after WB's status or whatever. He wanted a fight, a good one and maybe to die. Instead of WB, he got shanks. Might not be what he came for but shanks is obviously a worthy opponent. Even if he doesn't consider shanks as one, it doesn't matter. He's supposedly violent by nature and he's someone that has been captured more than a dozen times by Yonko/marines. That's goes to show how reckless he really is. You're acting as though he's this calm level headed individual who thinks things through. It's contrary to the manga's allusions thus far.

His life might not revolve around suicide but that and violence are clearly a big part of it. His empire is made up of a bunch of bloodthirsty and heartless bunch, even by pirate standards (at least going by the little we've seen). They're equally violent as well.
What's your point with the war? It's just another avenue for him to engage in violence which is consistent with his character and what I've said so far. Building an army doesn't mean much here. Kaido is suicidal but loves a good fight apparently. He can't possibly partake in a war on his own and even his with his crew, it wouldn't suffice. WB came in full force with his allies and was also aided by Luffy and the Impel down inmates but it still wasn't enough. Besides, Kaido has been captured numerous times. Getting captured means being in prison, which means no action. He obviously wouldn't be keen on going to a war with adequate forces only to get captured.
Kaido having an island is irrelevant. I'm not seeing the point of that. He's a Yonko, he has tons of subordinates under him and has territories including numerous islands. Why is it weird that he'd had a favorite and what does that have to do with the matter at hand?

Shanks said to Kaido that in the future one man will come and defeat Kaido and his name is Monkey D Luffy. When Kaido heard this he was satisfied (only after some more explanation from Shanks).

Probably Shanks told Kaidou to enter the arm race preparing for the ultimate war since he knew WB would fail and BB would become a new yonko in the future. Big man like Kaidou wants to end his life with a BANG, hence it's much better to die in style rather than rotting in some prison.

That sounds pretty far-fetched. Besides why would kaido have to wait for years when he can get a good fight right then? I think shanks said something or somehow managed to reason with kaido but definitely not by mentioning Luffy and using his as basis for making a point.

It doesn't surprise if, Red Shanks is as powerful as Oda has made him out to be, plus Shanks use to be part of Roger's crew. Look at Rayleigh and how powerful he is and he was Roger's right hand man. The Roger Pirates were pretty powerful from highest to lowest rank and I think, that's what made Gol. D Roger a true Pirate King.

I think now, Blackbeard has a small advantage and that's having two DF abilities, some intelligence and he has a powerful crew of ruthless criminals as his crew mates.
