So I want to just throw something out there that I've been thinking on in the series.

What do you guys think of a potential civil war between the Scouting Corps and the Military Police?

What brings this up for me is Irwin's question to Eren at the scene of the death of the two imprisoned Titans where he asks who the real enemy is, along with Eren's trial and the fact that the Military Police's head and the Religious cult want Eren to die.

It is just something I've been thinking about (actually has come about by trying to find similarities between FMA's plot development and Shingeki's)

I do believe there is a conspiracy element to this story that goes deeper than what we are being told. Is this something plausible?

I always thought that Irvin was referring to a conspiracy to bring down the walls as a whole. Then I thought he was talking about humans with the ability to become Titans, but I'm uncertain if he would even know of something like that prior to Eren...

It's more than plausible.

In fact, the whole 'there's people inside the walls knowing secret stuff about Titans' theme has been implied for quite some time now. There's the Faith of course, but higher-ups in the government, the military and nobles are very much likely to be aware of things not evident to the general public. Actually, the fact that most living people inside the wall is pretty much ignorant about what is going on and what's in the outside world has been made clear since the series very beginning.

I could easily see the Military Police being manipulated, or even directly ordered, into opposing the Scouting Legion if they happen to put their nose where they shouldn't. Although calling it a 'civil war' might be a bit of a stretch.

@Yumpo: I have tried to find raws for the scene with Erwin a few times but (so far) I only get transcriptions of later chapters when I search online.

@Themistocles: I think it's likely there's some kind of conspiracy to do with the wall cult, but I don't know about a war between the MPs and the Scouts. Seems to me the police are so corrupt, they're more about slacking off, boosting their egos, and saving their own hides than they are about actually fighting for something. I wouldn't be surprised if they did some underhanded things to maintain the status quo-- because you know they like where they are. Their job is as close to being "on top" as you can be in that society without being in the royal family or at the top of the merchant class. But they're too lazy and contented to be fighting for anything, imo.

I'm assuming your substituting titan shifters for homunculi and treating the wall cult like the "Church of Leto" or whatever it was from FMA? I don't think SnK will turn out similar. Unless you just mean similar themes? They do have some of those.

I never fully trust the MP. For a start, I think they protect the king don't they? Unless the king is some kind of puppet put in place by an even higher power (which is actually just as likely,) it is possible he knows things like the Wall Cult do.

The MP might not know it themselves, but I don't doubt they're easily influenced and controlled for the king's purposes.

Erwin obviously has some kind of distrust against some people from the inner circle, he's admirably witty and clearheaded, mind you. When it comes to what one of the new MPs say (during conversation with Annie) about changing the system itself (which could foreshadow a revolution within the nation,) Erwin seems to me to be a potential candidate in working in the dark to make the changes happen from within.

I don't think the name "Scouting Corps" will be used as the opposing faction, even if the people involved are composed of them. Given Erwin's character, he might use certain SC people to upstart some sort of revolt, while tactically putting the blame on them by calling them rogue elements just so he gets to be on both sides of the 'war.'

But I won't be surprised if there's a conspiracy within a conspiracy, which is going to be super interesting.

on another note, dont you guess think its strange that there is 3 walls with 4 protrusions? I would think " okay lets build one big wall and stay in there". But why three? With one wall you can still separate the wealthy and poor. And with the protrusions so the titans will gather there is shady as well. It works out now, but back then i dont see why they would have that train of thought.

I think maybe this is happening. The nations were at war, one created a devastating weapon- titans.The small island nation got pushed back into the walls. Maybe thats were RB's hometown is, in another nation and they are on a mission that was given to them. but i dont see why they would hide the fact that they are at war, or why the have titans in the wall. This next chapter better have info...

I don't know, maybe a plothole. Either way, it's pretty much explained now as a system of bait for the Titans.

They alluded to the walls actually being created by the Titans themselves. Using the ability some have to harden their skin and the fact that the wall surface is too pristine to be manmade or something.

I think there are 4 protusions because they are surrounded by titans in all directions, west, east, north and south; I guess there are 3 walls just in case one is broken people could retreat inside the next wall, but why 3? why not 4, 5 or 6? I don't know, maybe they didn't have the resources to build more walls or there were no more time to build more walls. Nonetheless, I think there is a reason for the walls that goes beyond the protection of humanity, maybe we could find it in the next episodes. BTW, I agree that titans are some sort of weapons created by humans, I don't think they are a new species or something like that.

about the walls. So in the anime (ohmygosh srsly?) in the "info we can tell you right now" on episode 1 (about 12:35 in) they give the diameter of the walls. Having 100km between Maria and Rose, 130 between Rose and Sina, and 250km between Sina and the center (those proportions don't seem right to me, but anyways)

That means the radius is 480km, and the diameter is 960km, so the circumference would be 3014.4km (using 3.14 because my computer calculator has no pi)
Which conicidentally is the same distance as the Tour de Spain in 1968, but anyways

that means the total area would be 723 456km squared

Point of comparison - Texas (as mentioned somewhere on this subforum) was depicted as the rough size of the walled zone, but it is only 696 241km squared. So the walled area in SnK is bigger in area than Texas. It is also larger than any Canadian province or territory except the Nunavut, and would be the 40th largest country on Earth. Basically. That's a lot of territory.

If we go by the "hidden writing" (upside-down katakana in the inside covers of every volume), the walls were already there before the fleeing humans came to the current "New World" from the "Old World." And many people were killed before they fled there, so only rich and influential people got to go. No one knows who built the walls. (Hence the wall cult claiming "God" did it.) If those size proportions (of the areas between the walls) from the anime are right, then the society they live in is even more perfectly stratified than I thought. The most powerful and influential people are inside Wall Sina, remember (and farthest away from the titans). The walls divide economic classes.

I think maybe they fear that after the invasion of Wall Maria the chances of another invasion could be more likely, but if I remembered correctly the cult of the wall opposed to that in order to the walls don't be desecrated or something like that; obviously that is the excuse, what they really want is people don't discover the truth behind the walls, that is ...

Attack on Titan Spawns Another Series in Shōnen Sirius Magazine

The insert included with the 11th volume of Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan manga is announcing this week that the story is spawning another series in Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine. "Another story" in the Attack on Titan world will begin in the October issue of Monthly Shōnen Sirius on August 26.

The wraparound jacket band on the 11th manga volume notes that the original series has over 23 million copies in print. The volume's insert also announced that Spike Chunsoft is developing a Nintendo 3DS game for release this year.
