Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

Thank you very much :). And wow, what a strange way to show 500k number :D. If they wanted to be concise they could have used 5*10^5 or half a million or something. Japanese is just too strange to me ;P.

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

That's a page from Junjou Romantica act. 25.
The white-hair man is Usagi-san and the black-hair guy is Misaki. Misaki is an economy student and Usagi is a novelist. Misaki lives at Usagi's house as a housekeeper and his boyfriend.
Misaki was trying to get a job at Marukawa publishing (Usagi works for this company). He just finished to give the interview and he wasn't expecting to pass.
Then he received a letter from the company saying he got the job.
Usagi, surprised at the letter, advised him to make some tests to make sure that the letter wasn't a joke.

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

Thanks for the context, that makes it a lot easier:

Thinking the "not" in "did not pass" could maybe show up if (the letter was) put into water, they tried soaking it.

M: It's not showing, right!?
U: It really isn't showing up.

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

と思います means "I think", you can add it to any clause. Aと思います = "I think that A". 話だ is a part of the previous clause. 日本においても充分ありえる = very possible even in Japan. 日本においても充分ありえる話だ = it's a story that is very possible even in Japan. 日本においても充分ありえる話だと思います = I think that it's a story that is very possible even in Japan.

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

さあな
さあなあ
and so on.

"Who knows", "I wonder..."

BTW, is there someone who knows what "momo" and "kuri" are? Written in katakana.
A tailor is talking about his experience and he's saying he's made "momo" and "kuri" for three years.
Trousers resembling the form of a peach and a chestnut?

But when I search さあな on the vocabulary I get nothing, I would like to know exactly which word it is.

It's not one word, it's two words. Search for さあ and なあ separately.

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

Surely さあ has many more meanings than that. You didn't provide the context, but I'm going to guess that in this case it means something like "who knows?" and なあ is like going huuuh...

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

@Callaghan

さあなあ=さあ Who knows. (meaning "not really sure")
(Guren no heya kara’s translation is correct. )

@ Guren no heya kara

momo: peaches
kuri: chestnuts

There is a Japanese proverb: 桃栗三年柿八年 (Momo kuri san-nen kaki hachi-nen) link to Weblio

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

Say, Usagi-san, if I lived in the Edo period, what kind of a name would I have?
{not sure what's coming out of TV}
"Misakichi"
...Eh, a merchant?
Because you're a commoner

Apparently, in the Edo era it was common for people to change names based on their occupation or social standing. Merchants and craftsmen often had names ending in -kichi or -suke. See a question here: http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q132133598

Because he just paid, the location of the wallet is clear
He's looking at his tray and, moreover, is going to be eating, so if you slip the wallet out he won't notice
...A habitual crime, isn't it?

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

Hello.
In japanese festival songs there're usually some meaningless words that
are there only to give rhythm to the song itself. How would you put them in English?
I have this サのヨイヨイ as the closing sentence in a flyer advertising a folk dance event
and this is the song where it comes from

Re: Short & Quick Translation Request Thread (Thread for Non-translators)

Hi there. Me and my friends have recently discovered the Ultraman manga and we'd like to know what the titles of the chapters mean, as they are in kanji and we are not very sure about them.

I know we might be asking too much, but any help is appreciated. Thanks and cheers.
