Would you mind if I try my hand at Editing Sakigake using your translations?

Its a series that seems right up my alley and I know of many people that would like to see it scanlated (Mostly people from jojo and hokuto no ken forums.).

Also as for suggestions. Violence Jack by Go Nagai is a great, but very long. Seinen series. Altho I think it ran in a shounen magazine like most seinen did back in the 70s/80s.

Its actually one of my favourite mangas, but the Edited Mangas are few and not in chronological order.

One last question. On your page it says Tiger Mask. Are you planning to translate that series? Cause the same people who scream for Sakigake to be scanlated are also screaming for that one :P

Currently I'm sort of working to create a group for Otokojuku, but I didn't know that people wanted to see it scanslated that badly. Can you show me the links so I can confirm that? (maybe if they don't back to me I'll ask you)

Oh, and yes, I just made a news comment on it for my readers: I made a promise to someone to do Tiger Mask and I'm going to be keeping it soon. Once I finish my work on Kinnikuman (a bit over two volumes left since someone else is doing the Throne), I'll be starting Tiger Mask. (sort of want to get back to Wingman but a promise is a promise) Oh...and that same person likes Violence Jack too but I'm probably going to avoid Nagai's works since others sort of want to do them.

Ok I hope that works out. There are alot of people who could probably do it faster than me. Aslong as it gets out there Im happy :)

Hmm finding a specific thread about, I dont know if I could. But I just know its one of those series many mention in threads about manga they would like to see scanlated (and anime they would like to see fansubbed.).

If no other group picks up Tiger mask Id like to do that one aswell. But no preassure, go with what you yourself want.

Problem is that there is only one person brave enough to touch the behemoth known as violence jack. But he isnt a Manga Editor and pays some ****** group to do a chapter every now and then when he has the money for it. Its sad to see a series I love come out with a volume a year or less.

Nagai's robot series seem to be scanlated like hot cakes(that sounded stupid) lately.

Ever considered doing something by Tezuka? Such as Kimba the white lion?

Want Tiger Mask, you can have it. That will be cool with me. (the problem is that since it is released in bunkos from what we found, I may have these super-long entries for the scripts)

Hmm...need to find something by Tezuka that interests me, but the thing is that his series seem to be getting legitimate releases one after another by companies like Viz, Dark Horse and the one that did "Buddha". Kimba probably isn't one I'd go for but if you can suggest something that actually looks cool, I may look into it. (I'd say the original Black Jack could be nice but that probably has a legit release somewhere or another...dunno)

Black jack is actually currently being released by vertical (the company that released buddha, mw and ode to kirihito(which is my favourite comic ever made)) I think they're on volume 5 out of a planned 17.

The reason I said Kimba is because it is both short and the raws are avaible. Tezuka has quite a bit of stuff Id be interested in, but I can mostly find the raws of the stuff that has already been released in english.

Ah didn't know. Somehow I need to pick that up...but then again I need to get Pluto a bit more. (somehow Urasawa's touch seems to make Tezuka more interesting...and less cartoony in appearance)

I guess I sort of need to sort through things but as it stands I'm rather satisfied with what I'm doing.

*Pops in to say hello*

It seems I have a number of things to thank you for. 1st of all, thank you for translating Bobobo. I enjoy the series immensely and really do want to be able to read it from start to finish. Unfortunately, Viz won't allow me to do that and I believe you pointed this out to me in your interview. Which I also happened to enjoy.

2nd, your work with Kinikuman. I actually got into the series through Nisei first but currently have it on hold atm. While I do have it on the side, I figure I should actually read through the original series first before continuing. Which would not be possible without your contributions so thank you very much.

3rd, I had an interest in reading Jigoku Nube Sensei recently but was worried nothing would be available since it is an older Jump series. Come to find out that you have apparently uploaded the volumes in Raw form. So thank you for that. Unfortunately, my Japanese is only on a 1st grade level at best so it will be a bit before I can actually read the series. x[

I know you said you wanted to fill in holes for past Jump series so I figured you may or may not have information on this question. Would you happen to know if the entirety of Saint Seiya exists in Raw form anywhere? Or any place that may give one a chance to buy it? I've looked around and haven't had much luck so far. Only these new incarnations that started recently. If you don't know then that is fine too. >.<

Oh wow you already uploaded Seiya in Raw form as well. I really need to get better with Japanese at a faster rate then. :lmao

Also lastly,

I can but the thing is I've really slipped further and further away from this thread. Meh...I just don't think this thread is as fun anymore as it used to be and really doesn't feel like an oldie like me belongs here. (besides, I actually liked Chagecha compared to whoever hated it)
This grabbed my curiosity. In your opinion, what changed to make that discussion less fun? It would be nice to hear the opinion of an older resident of the thread. I also noticed some others don't frequent it as much either. If you don't mind sharing of course.

Thanks for the word. I suggest regarding Kinnikuman to try and read what we do have done so far (as in all of Team Kinniku alongside the old scans by Toriyama World) so you can get a great BG on the world. It's not quite done yet but I am working my way through it. Bo-bobo is sort of screwy: there are scans but, as I've said before, it is really incomplete and screwed up. Last I saw was in the midst of Hajike Block...so you may have to just stick with my scripts for a while longer. Oh, and thanks also for the word on Nube, I still want to TL that series but there is so much going on that I need to figure out if/when/how. (let alone other projects like Wingman and getting back to KochiKame, since that may have fans too)

Also lastly,

The thread has become too statistical IMHO. It used to be a parallel to the LJ board on Jump, talking of the magazine, it's history, it's series (past and present) and of course the weekly TOC. Now it's all about TOC stats, what series is about to die, volume sales, one-shot results...it just feels like it lost a lot of soul and became a bit more corporate. I think we overworry on these things that are way out of our control and we should just enjoy the magazine for what it is while speculating a bit instead of letting it rule over us. I also think we talk too much on the new series, particularly many which will just die anyway...I don't mind short series but somehow I've noticed that a lot of the longer series usually end up being noticed anyway and that it really is hard to follow a series if you think it's on death's door all the time. (I don't mind a shorter series years later as like a link to a mangaka but I guess it's just my own personal feelings...or maybe just the bitterness of what happened to Chagecha, which I TLed all 8 chapters personally and watched it bomb after loving them for the most part).

Ah, well Kinnikuman seems to be the closest to "completion" of your projects so it would make sense to go with that. Especially since there is a sequel of it. I'll most likely be able to appreciate Nisei more that way.

Hmm I see. In terms of Bobobo I may just read your translations alongside the Raws if they are all available. Though I'd prefer not to do it that way but the series really has got a raw deal. I personally hate people who jump around when scanning something. I noticed it with Hayate no Gotoku, Gintama, and Kekkaishi a year or so back. It really doesn't let one enjoy a series completely. =/

Oh you are quite welcome. I've heard of Nube from some of the spanish people I met online and then I remembered you mentioning it in the past as well. I do have an interest on seeing some of the older Jump series and how they may have formed the newer ones.

I also want to read the older ones because they weren't shaped by Dragonball as much. I enjoy it for what it does but I can only tolerate so many references and similarities to Goku before I feel its over saturation. He was pivotal, but I feel that many others were overlooked in what they contributed to the magazine's history. That and I feel what worked for Part 2 Dragonball shouldn't be such a strong staple in newer series. Looking at Bleach's degeneration is an example.

Oh, well I most certainly have an interest in Wingman. If you ever get around to translating it I will most certainly read your work. ^___^

Hmm I actually see your point. As far as stats go, I think it got so stat heavy because some people wanted to use them as proof that their series of choice would get to live for X amount of chapters. Or in reverse, a series they hate would die in X amount. Not that it is really hard to tell when something is dead last or 2nd to last consistently.

I think people really worried because they really do get too attached. Unlike the main front runners of WSJ, you get to actually be there from the beginning or near the beginning. Then when something dies people end up getting somewhat bitter after all that invested energy? Well, perhaps a number of people do need to take your advice then. XD

As far as talking too much on the newer series, I can agree with that. Good lord did Akaboshi get tons of mentioning and agony during its run. But I also think some of the newer people talk more about the new series because they might not have much to say on the current older ones.

I mean, most of us agree on Bleach sucking. Though it still has its supporters. I sure as hell can't figure out why. There is the OP vs. Naruto in the ToC rankings. Then the other series kind of dance around in the lower top and middle of the magazine. I guess they feel like it is hard to find something to talk about in regards to them without getting too series specific and getting deleted for off-topicness. But that is probably the problem in itself. Some people have only gotten used to talking about what will live and what will die so it gives them nothing to speak of with the "Safe" series. I'm also not sure of how many older series people have read outside of the likes of Dragonball so that is a factor too I guess. Well, that is my attempt at breaking recent mentalities down at any rate.

I rather enjoy the current discussion on which mangaka gave birth to who that is going on. That and I do agree with you on possibly seeing older Jump series brought into the mix more often.

As for the series being on Death's door all the time, that is precisely why I won't be particularly invested in any new series that comes about. I'm already having a hard enough time with Medaka and wanting it to live. Despite all the hate it gets. Though I will not flood the thread about it lol.

I still need to read Chagecha but I could tell it hit you rather hard. :darn

On an unrelated note, any advice on how to absorb the Japanese language faster? I've got enough reference material but trying to keep at it consistently for long amounts of time is my biggest problem.

Sorry if I've written too much. >.<

There is a lot to Jump that has little to no connection to DB. The problem is that DB is so important to today's audience (like hopefully stuff like OP will be in the future) that everyone uses that as a reference for their works. (but as we know they had others: heck, both Oda and Kishi were obvious Kinnikuman fans and I remember Sorachi stating he read a bit of Saint Seiya...but was more a Golgo fan and read seinen as a kid) Personally though with everything being connected, I think that we should know more about the evolution of Jump. (a bit of advise alongside Wingman: also read my translations of "Sakigake! Otokojuku"...if you're a fan of some series like Bo-bobo or even Gurren Lagann, you'll find it a lot of fun...and it's Jump)

I think the problem is that the web is able to allow us to read everything from birth, making people rally into certain things, love being right on "being there from the start" while letting people who love another series that isn't as successful to mourn if their series goes nowhere. I mean once upon a time, all the series we got here were usually already successful or notable so it's not like we could become fans from day one like the Japanese. But we have no say in how it turns out, so I think that fretting and going to obsessed is a bit much. On the other hand, I don't mind looking at old series that are short...mostly as reference or meeting something you may or may not know and dreaming of what could have been. (already did "Jii-chan G" for one thing and Togashi's "Ten de Showaru Cupid"...which I want to TL but may not get the chance...and similarly I've discovered another shorter series by the mangaka of "Desire" that I may want to do too...) But I guess I get too detatched due to thinking we get too obsessed and sort of do want to see the thread get a bit less obsessed in these sorts of things.

I'm sure OP will be somewhere down the line. I'm fine with DB having its spot but I kind of wish the audience would give the other stuff its fair amount of credit too. Maybe one day.

The evolution and the connections are interesting. I love finding references to older series as well as seeing the parallels between old and new.

Sakigake! Otokojuku...I believe I've seen the main character posted several times elsewhere. If that is the case, I'll take a look at it. I am a fan of Gurren Lagann and Bobobo as you know so this will probably another gem.

Well, you are on target with the web's effect on how people view series now. When I think about it, there are most likely countless series that have been in similar positions but we never knew because they weren't scanned. So the only difference is really awareness I suppose. Plus the online community whines when something ends but it isn't like their opinion matters anyway if they aren't sending in the postcards or buying the tanks ha.

The short series do serve as good reference points I agree. For instance, I can see how Hiroyuki Takei's work with Butsu Zone gave birth and had its effects on Shaman King.

Well, it seems you and others have spoken up about the concerns and I know that they have reached Kaiten. Maybe this will get things headed in a new direction. He already seems to be attempting to rectify things.

(looks at list) Don't hurry on it though. I mean I have a ton I need to read too but I don't make manga that high a priority :p (usually I read whatever I TL therefore aside OP and Gintama (and some stuff I've been buying like Flame of Recca and Soul Eater), all I've really been reading as of late are my projects. (Kinnikuman, K. Lady, Otokojuku)

The biggest strength and weaknesses for the manga situation these days is essentially the web. The web makes manga available but it's the series people know about or that come out with the web around that they want to read, let alone the selectiveness of whoever provides the scans. Maybe it's always been like this (considering one of the first major web prescences was Ranma, but mostly due to Viz being so huge with it in the states and bringing that out) but all we can do is live with it: we can't control it, we can't stop it. I guess I found my own niche and try to not let it get to me.

My list still has a ways to go. So much stuff needs reading. When I think I've finally made some progress I notice there are still quite a few more things that I want to read. XD

Flame of Recca and Soul Eater are good series. They aren't the best in their field but definitely entertaining reads. I keep saying I'll give Gintama another chance and I really do want to. Other manga just keep jumping in front of it though...

Well considering you have put out one of the highest number of translations here no wonder you have only been reading what you translate. XD

Ha, well said.

I do think its probably always been like this. No one scans everything so they primarily will scan what they personally like or what is outrageously popular. Viz did the latter with Ranma as you said.

Well, unless more foreigners start holding up in Japan but the Japanese aren't exactly big on that last I checked. =P

A wonderful niche it is! But I do wonder, what series would you attempt after finally clearing the ones you mentioned in this thread? Would you still stick to Jump or branch out to other shounen magazines?

Well considering you have put out one of the highest number of translations here no wonder you have only been reading what you translate. XD
Tons of translations doesn't always mean the best. I just have too much time on my hands I could say.

A wonderful niche it is! But I do wonder, what series would you attempt after finally clearing the ones you mentioned in this thread? Would you still stick to Jump or branch out to other shounen magazines?
There are still quite a few older Jump series I really want to do or find somewhere along the line so I can get to them. I do want to branch out but I am only one man. Heck, I may even want to do a series that is already done so I can do my own reading of it.

Oh, I didn't mean to insinuate quantity=quality. I meant it as you having done so many translations so no wonder you didn't have the time/motivation to pick many other series up. XD

Ah I see. Sounds like your niche could actually keep you occupied for years before you get a chance to go at it with anything else.

As far as doing already completed series, any of them come to mind atm?

I've been contemplating doing "Hell Teacher Nube" for a while...but thinking a few other people have shown an interest, I've sort of backed away. (for one thing, it's one reason I'm doing Otokojuku instead) Aside from that (and "Wingman", which I do want to get back to eventually), a few other series I've been thinking of doing include:

-Ninku (got a few links for the series, not really a style I like per-se but could be neat for the fans)
-Tottemo! Luckyman (another of those cool 90s series that probably I need to look at and could be a nice combo of comedy and action)
-Sannen Kimengumi/High School! Kimengumi (I've been looking everywhere for this and haven't found it, but essentially it's one of the crucial comedy series of the 80s and I really want to read/translate it)
-Doberman Detective (another one I can't find I want to do, this is the series that put Buronson [Fist of the North Star's writer] on the map)
-A couple shorter series including "Ten de Showaru Cupid" (Togashi's first major Jump work) and "Scandoll" (another 4 volume series by the guy who did "Desire", which is the seinen I've been doing)

Do you know which people said they were interested in doing Nube? I do intend on reading Otojuku relatively soon. Just need to clear a bit more off of my reading list and catch up to a few other things. >.>

Sadly, I haven't heard of any of the other series until you mentioned them. Actually, Scandoll sounds vaguely familiar I think. I'd definitely give them a try after you get the chance to translate them.
