It's not for me the same situation at all. IMHO, if Sony decides to put it at the same price as the xbox, they already win.
The massive difference is that PS4 already have no serious concurrence. The Wii U is a joke & the XBOX isn't going to be on sale months in advance (and is already being destroyed on internet for the last revelations ...). PS3 had to face the Wii & an already established XBOX.It's a pretty big deal when there competition can go cheaper. Which is something the PS3 learned the hard way after it came out at $599 and got destroyed by the Xbox 360 until a price drop.
It's also hard to justify for the crowd they seem to want to appeal to with the TV functionality. I mean, if the point of that was to sell to more than just hardcore gamers the $499 price point pretty much guarantees that they won't be able to compete in that market.
