Funny, I just ran into an old article about game developers claiming the PS3 was hard to program for. Sony's CEO made the point that this was very intentional because they don't want game developers to fully take advantage of the console from the start, they wanted to be able to impress people with graphics through the duration of the console. Same thing goes for the xbox.... Funny how the interests of developers and console makers can be that different. It is still a bit of a weird strategy though, you'd think being able to get better games out there faster would help the console sell more. Then again if game developers could take advantage of the console from the get go then perhaps we'd end up buying consoles every year.... But then again, who nowadays gets overly impressed by graphics? Graphics are cool and all but gameplay is far more important.... then again we do live in a world where a call of duty and fifa game is released every 9 months even though every version is at best only marginally different from the previous one.....

So what about dem Steam Machines?

I didn't follow the live event, but from the roundups, CyberPowerPC is the only one I consider good enough, or balanced enough...the rest are way to expensive...of course half of them don't have all their info disclosed but still...

Do you think these prices will remain?

Honestly, I don't know whether it's a good or bad thing that are 14 different versions of a machine that does the same thing...

Too expensive for the hardware and too complicated, IMO.

People who want a premade gaming rig are going to go for Consoles and people who want a PC are probably just going to stay with thier gaming rigs unless there is a price incentive not to; which as far as I can tell there really isn't. Valve also made a mistake, I think, when they posted hardware specs of these things without offering a dumbed down way of expressing what they do. Not everyone sees a graphics card name and processor and automatically knows what that means. I realize the any ad campaign hasn't really started in earnest yet but it certainly starts them off on the wrong foot with non-pc gamers who see steam machines, get excited, check it out, and come away thinking....nope.

I think, ultimately the prices will come down and a lot of these models will just not sell.

Depends on what they put in the it. A steam machine can cost less than $400, but can also cost more than $2000 as already shown. The selling point is the fact that you can upgrade it anytime and has a huge library of games that go on sale a lot. The downside is, anyone who already has a gaming rig can probably already hook it up to their t.v. The way I see it, if it sells well, then hopefully developers will see the PC platform worth it and start developing games for the PC instead of crappy ports. There's a lot of pros and cons, but honestly I don't think too much console gamers will be too interested unless, as I said, developers actually take PC gaming seriously.

Same way you do with a computer hooked into your tv i think...very uncomfortably.

That's where steam's custom made controller comes in, I think. So they offer something besides a keyboard and mouse for a more console like couch friendly experience. Which I don't really get, honestly, because if you want a console like experience seems to me the smart thing to do would be to buy a PS4 for 100 dollars cheaper than any steam box I've seen announced yet.

Yeah I don't know the point of that controller either, I use an Xbox 360 controller for Steam games and it works flawlessly...as long as it's supported, and I don't think Steam boxes or the Steam controller are going to change that at all.

The Steam controller is supposed to feel and behave more like a mouse and keyboard, so RTS games and such would be playable with the controller. The cool thing is that you can build your own. Again, it does seem a bit pointless, but I'll wait and see what Valve are really gonna do with these things.
