The MangaHelpers Manga Awards Discussion Thread

[destiny4ever]

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Um, there were two invalid nominations. First, Love Hina is no Shoujo series. It was featured in Weekly Shounen Magazine.

Thank you for pointing that out, Mr. Prince. You are right, Love Hina is a shounen. I’ll remove Love Hina from the shojou category. To the person who nominated Love Hina, you can nominate it for the best shounen category or you can nominate another series for best shojou.

Second, it was mentioned a few pages ago but in order to nominate a kissing scene there actually has to happen a kiss. This clearly was NOT the case with Bleach. (This is a link to the scene, don't click if you don't want to get spoiled.)

Thank you for pointing that out as well. I’ll remove that nomination from the best kiss category. There was almost a kiss, but their lips didn’t touch.

And lastly, I (also) really can't agree on counting L as a supporting character and I guess most people will agree after reading what destiny posted just before. Ryuk or most of the Kira Investigation Team members are but L? No way...

Allowing L in the supporting character category was a really tricky thing for me, it wasn’t an easy decision. He is the deuteragonist, of the first arc, in which he takes on Kira and if it wasn’t for the fact that

Spoiler

he dies and he doesn’t take part in the other arcs of the story

I wouldn’t have allowed him to be part of the supporting character category. But as I said I’m going to leave L in the best male supporting character category based on the following description of what a supporting character is:

A supporting character is a character of a book, play, video game, movie, television or radio show other form of storytelling usually used to give added dimension to a main character, by adding a relationship with this character. Sometimes supporting characters may develop a complexity of their own, but this is usually in relation to the main character, rather than entirely independently.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

@Prince how come love hina is not a shoujo? O_o

Manga demographics are decided exclusively by what magazine they are serialized in and who that magazine is marketed too. Demographic is never determined by content, genre, or maturity level. Love Hina was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine. It is also the archetypal harem comedy, a very shonen genre at the time.

Itachi turning out to be good. I'll go in depth for this later once i am on a pc...but for now all i'll say is that judging the unexpectedness, yet the finest seamless fitting of it with loads and loads of previously known details, the impact it had on the plot both before and after the revelation, the impact on the characterization and character interaction of the main characters (which is the core crisis of this manga), the way the whole thing changed complexion only by the establishment of a different perspective without changing the actual event(that is itachi being the one to mass murder uchiha), the emotional impact it had on readers and the political/philosophical debate it generated among them (so realistic that it remains an almost unsolvable debate)...that without any doubt it is The Best. A twist that is not only surprising, but with exceptional depth (the only other one that comes to my mind is the Lelouch twist...but its anime).

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

That L is a supporting character is of no doubt...any character which is not the protagonist is a supporting character (including the villain and the antagonist) even if the character itself is more prominent and better developed. However the really tricky one is akiyama from LG...is nao the narrator here while akiyama is the protagonist(like Wattson and Sherlock), or is it that nao is the protagonist and akiyama supporting? Or is it that both of them are protagonists? It'll be really wonderful if destiny-sama or anyone from the mods give their explanation on this.

The protagonists are main characters, so we can definitely consider Akiyama as the Male Lead and Nao as the Female Lead...Akiyama appeared early on in the manga, and since then he's been teaming up with Nao...they are both leading characters and protagonists(soul+brain)...

Best Shoujo Manga
Damn you, saladesu!

I wanted to be the first to call this great series... so, in the end I'll have to second X/1999.

Well, I'm glad to see someone even seconding this series! I have never even seen it be mentioned anywhere on MH as far as I can remember. for liking this great shoujo! I honestly wish CLAMP would get back to work on it HxH fans complain about hiatuses, but at least those hiatuses don't last 7 years D:

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Best Josei Manga: +1 vote for Nodame Cantabile. Only Josei I’ve liked enough to keep reading. That should be enough reason.

Best New Series: +1 vote for Oumagadoki Doubutsuen. Same reason as for the Josei category.

Best Female Lead: Nausicaä from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

Basically one of the most kind-hearted characters in a manga ever. She has a love and empathy towards more or less all that is living, but not for one second does it feel forced. She's willing to risk her life for other beings without hesitation, not because she's reckless, but because she's simply such a caring character. But again, not for one second does it feel forced. Miyazaki manages to actually make such a "risk-of-being-cliché"-character feel real. It's a shame not many have read this manga and she probably won't make it to the votings, but she at least deserves being mentioned here.

Will return with my last nominations/votes later.

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Best Male Lead: +1 vote to Gutts from Berserk - he is just so awesome
Best Male Supporting Character: Furuichi from Beelzebub - always makes me crack up
Best Female Lead or Supporting Character (consider her a Lead but since she was already nominated as supporting...): +1 vote to Oikawa Tsurara (Yuki-onna) from Nurarihyon no Mago - like her design and personality
Best Shoujo Manga: Kaichou wa Maid-sama! - one of few Shoujo's I follow
Best Shounen Manga: Nurarihyon no Mago
Best Seinen Manga: +1 vote to Berserk
Best Hairstyling: Nurarihyon no Mago - no overboard hairstyles but still quite memorable
Best Costume Design: +1 vote to D.Gray-Man - I just love Exorcist uniforms
Best Villain: Hagoromo-Gitsune from Nurarihyon no Mago - couldn't decide between her and Millennium Earl from D.Gray-man but took her in the end. She is hot, badass and has a great design
Best Fight: +1 vote to Naruto, Minato vs. Madara
Best Chapter: Nurarihyon no Mago - chapter 133 - short, romantic and heart-brakening... what else could you ask for?
Best Couple/ Pairing: RikuoxTsurara from Nurarihyon no Mago - first shounen manga where I care for pairings. RikuoxYura is also nice there
Best Full Cast: +1 vote to Fullmetal Alchemist - this is one of strongest points of this manga: it does not depend on one or two characters, but a hole bunch of them and uses all of them perfectly
Best Artwork: +1 vote to Nurarihyon no Mago - like the mix of manga art and traditional art
Best WTF Moment: Naruto:

Spoiler

Tobi revealed to be Madara - a comedic relief ends up being the main villain

Best plot-twist: +1 vote to

Spoiler

Bleach: Aizen's revelationto be a villain at the end of Soul society Arc

Best Manga Overall: +1 vote to Fullmetal Alchemist - while I like NnM (as seen from above XD), I still think FMA is better if we take in account that Overall is for everyone, not a certain audience)

[Nuno]

Re: The MangaHelpers Manga Awards

Best Male Supporting Character: L from Death Note. I think it's kind of ridiculous to have him as a supporting character as I view him as a main character (like many others). So if he's moved to the lead category consider L my vote there.
Best Shounen Manga: Fullmetal Alchemist
Best Hairstyling: Bleach. If there's one thing Kubo excels at, it's drawing cool hairstyles.
Best Costume Design: I'll actually nominate Naruto here. There's plenty of awesome costume designs in Naruto, even if the lead himself's clothes suck.
Best Fight: Naruto vs Sasuke
Best Couple/ Pairing: Ed & Winry - FMA
Best Color Page: Naruto/ Chapter 503
Best Full Cast: FMA, hands down.
Best New Series: Enigma
Best Manga Overall: Fullmetal Alchemist

[Divinenega]
