So far, Lucy’s limit is to using 2-3 spirits at once+High-Level spell. The way I understood Mercphobia’s words, he simply meant that Lucy has great affinity with him. Affinity=/=high level magical power. As it is, Lucy probably only fulfills the bare minimum requirement to summon him. And whenever she chooses to do so, she needs to make it count, because at her level, she can only get off probably one shot against her opponent before exhausting herself.
That's exactly what I think, but I have a feeling Lucy will do more than just invoke Mercphobia.

Mashima will need to address this issue of invoking Mercphobia, as in the Tartarus arc Leo and Virgo mentioned that Lucy could not handle opening 3 gates (a prohibited technique that can lead to serious consequences).

Mercphobia isn't being summoned by a sacrifice (CSK), so the magic power cost to open its gate must be enormous.

I hope Mashima explains.

What do you think about the broken key? Lucy has Aquarius back, but she still has the broken key. I think there's something important about it. Maybe when a Celestial Wizard breaks a key and reunites with the spirit, they can access the Celestial King Key?

I had a theory that by combining the two keys it would be possible to create the CSK key, but I don't know if Mashima intends to use the King one day. I think he chose Mercphobia as the Lucy greatest asset for the next fights.

I'm of the opinion that Lucy and Merc will be friends and have a permanent contract.

So who do you think Lucy will invoke Mercphobia against?

An important point I wanted to address is that Lucy has magical power to open the gate of Mercphobia, a Dragon God, not just any dragon. This means that she has a huge amount of magical power, but Lucy herself seems to doubt this, despite Mercphobia being sure she can do it.

But if Lucy possesses so much magical power why isn't this reflected in the power level of her spirits? We've had Mimi's statements about summons being only as strong as the summoner in previous arcs and recently Mashima expanded the lore of Summoning Magic, so I feel like he's slowly developing this concept.

Perhaps Lucy doesn't understand how powerful she is (she has learned a lot against her enemies on the 100-year quest) or doesn't know how to affect the power level of her spirits.

I hope Mashima continues to develop Summoning Magic and that he gives good explanations when Lucy tries to summon Mercphobia.
I feel like she’ll do it for Natsu who may start lighting the world up in fire.

I saw a similar theory on Twitter.

I even find it interesting, as it would draw a parallel with what happened in the first arc of Mercphobia. Natsu lost control and started to freak out.

Lucy's limit is what every Hiro Mashima wants it to be at the moment.

Tartarus wasn't the arc where Lucy's limit was shown. She showed the ability to open 6-10 Zodiacs at once, and during the Loke arc, she opened 5 zodiac Keys at once. During the Tartarus arc, when she summoned the 3 spirits, the majority of her magical power had already been drained, and even after that, she had enough magical power to summon the CSK.

Wasn’t that offset by sacrificing Aquarius? Summoning the CSK doesn’t really cost the user magical energy/mana, it simply requires the summoner to sacrifice one zodiac key.

As for the Loke arc, I‘m pretty sure that was less Lucy, and moreso thanks to the zodiacs using their own power to summon themselves on behalf of Loke.

In the GMG arc, she was able to summon all of her spirits because it was a shared ritual with Yukino, so the cost was split between them. Plus, Yukino had less spirits, so she could take on Lucy’s burden.

No. Breaking a gold key simply acts as a gate to open the doorway to the CSK. It requires magic like all other spirits to summon him and maintain him. When Lucy began to run low on magical power the king became sluggish and had to dissappear. I mean the whole reason Aquarius says Lucy can summon the spirit king was because she was strong enough to open 3 gates at once.

That was 100% Lucy who did that. It was stated and shown in the Chapter. Not only do we literally she her magic power summoning them, Leo flat out states Lucy summoned them.

Even if it was a ritual that still means Lucy opened 6 zodiac keys at once.

When summoning the Spirit King. The king transferred the magical energy to Lucy. When lucy used urano metria she no longer had magic to maintain the summoning of the king

I feel like this proves I was generally correct :headscratch . 3 spirits are the maximum she can summon on a given day. But when pushed into a do-or-die situation, she can double that at the cost of completely depleting her energy in one go.

So, overall, Mashima might be a bit more consistent than you might think.

I think we have an idea of how Hiro will work on the design of Mercphobia's Star Dress.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but you guys are forgetting that Mercphobia lost most of his power. He even told Lucy she didn’t need his Key now that she has Aquarius back, which speaks volumes about how much power he lost.

Whatever cost current Mercphobia would have is probably not much higher than what she’d normally spend.

She intends to use it against the Dragon Gods, so I think people are overestimating the Merc's lack of power.

Him saying that has nothing to do with his power, it’s because Aquarius is a water user like him. And he said he has enough to fight.

Where was this stated?

I guess it depends on the angle you're looking from. It's true that she doesn't need another water user, though in the current context, she and her friends are going against Ignia and the other dragon gods, so she would absolutely need a massively strong ally.

And he said he has enough to fight.
He said that he could fight temporarily, which indicates that he really doesn't have a lot of power left

She mentioned in the chapter that she intends to go destroy the other lacrimas.

And each lacrima is guarded by a Dragon God. Now that she has the key to Mercphobia, it's natural to imagine that she will use it against the Dragon Gods, right?

Remembering that Dragon Slayer magic is needed to destroy the lacrimas.

Not necessarily. The Lacrima are the Dragon Gods' new weak spots, so she doesn’t have to engage them directly as long as they're preoccupied with someone else—unless the Lacrima is attached to their body, like with Viernes.

Not that I think she’s actually going to face another Dragon God. They all split up to take one down, and she already dealt with Mercphobia. It’d be pretty unfair if she butted into someone else’s fight.

I could see her dual-summoning him and Aquarius against the Signario Sisters, though.

She intends to go all the way, we don't know if she will make it. Maybe she'll be stopped by the Signario sisters, maybe not.

But I suspect Mashima built this storyline from Mercphobia's key to something more relevant than fighting the Signario Sisters. I think Lucy will calm Natsu down when he loses control

By the way, Aldoron is still alive and causing trouble.

If that were the case, then why would he specifically have the characters point out that Mercphobia's still nerfed? He had the perfect out with this spell bringing them back to their original power, but he didn't use it. Merc has limited power, and we saw during his arc that he can get wrecked by the Diablos Trio while in this state.

Thing is, we don't know if Natsu's gonna lose control again and if he does, there's no need for Lucy to have DG-tier power to calm him down. She managed to do so without it last time + Dragon Merc's water couldn't put out Natsu's fire when he had a little bit of Ignia's power, and this new power up is hyped to bring him on par with full power Ignia.

Regarding Aldoron, both Natsu and Erza's there. Odds are that one of them (probably Erza) will end up dealing with him.

I could of course be proven wrong due to Mashima pulling a Mashima again, but based on what was presented in this and past chapters, Merc has no business being relevant against either another Dragon God, or 'Awakened' Natsu

I think you're exaggerating the "limited power" part. We don't know how much power Mercphobia has; we only understand that he has the power to fight temporarily. Karameel is not the best indicator in this discussion, as she believed that Merc had no power before the lacrima appeared, and Merc also corrected her.

And your example isn't a good one, as Mercphobia didn't have much control over his powers at the start of his arc. Faris was the one who had control over Mercphobia's magical power, being able to increase or reduce it.

Regarding Natsu, I disagree. Lucy mentioned that something horrible was going to happen a few chapters ago, and when she calmed Natsu down in the Mercphobia arc, she got burned. If Natsu loses control next time, the situation will be much more drastic, as it looks like the power boost he will receive will be massively stronger.

And isn't it a coincidence that Lucy gets a huge buff (Mercphobia) in the same chapter where Hiro is foreshadowing the super special flames that Natsu will consume?

Remember that it was in the Mercphobia arc that Natsu went crazy. The parallels are all there. I'm not saying that Lucy will beat Natsu, but it seems that Mashima is building up to a moment where Lucy will have to calm Natsu down through powerful water magic to contain his flames until he regains consciousness and masters his new powers.
