If you are not sure what they are (the Oscar's I mean), then I am not sure how you found this thread...

Just think of a small golden statue of a man holding a stick being given out to some undeserving actors/actresses/directors/general nobodies related to films in some way or other.
Think far too many emotions
Crying (most fake, but there may be a few genuine tears here and there)
Fancy costumes
Think the exact kind of occasion which Kanye West may rush up on stage, uninvited, and make an arse of himself!

Also, to increase the fun all the way to 11 - there's a fancy competition (with a possibility to win a nice badge also [terms and conditions apply - badges may be revoked/not given out at moderator's discretion])

To be fair, you should really play - even if you hate the Oscars - especially if you hate the Oscars... only because, if you win, you can lord it over all those who actually do care!

So, with that all said, I present:

MH Oscars Contest 2018

It's that time again, time to pretend that you know more about films than you actually do.
Time to unequivocally state why your choices are correct and why anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron
(please don't actually do this - peace and love for everyone ね )

It all finally culminates on Sunday the 4th March, at the 90th Academy Awards.
Awards will be handed out for all kinds of film related categories - Best Film, Best Actor/Actress in a leading role, Best person-who-wasn't-good-enough-to-be-the-leading-actor-so-we-made-a-runners-up-prize-to-make-them-feel-better... There's even an award for hairstyling?!?

We at Mangahelpers are hosting our own Oscar winners poll, with the chance to win your own Oscar. As an award badge [again, if anyone asks, although I wrote this, I don't promise nuthin'!].

Rules:
- Go here and make your picks!
- The user with the most correct guesses wins the award. Remember to leave your username in the poll.
last year, some bright sparks forgot this/wrote random handles (they didn't win, funnily enough - mainly cause I am far too lazy to try and guess/think about who is who - make it simple if you want to win. If not, just write your name as M3J and pick shitty picks)
- Only 1 entry allowed. In case an user does multiple entries, only the last one counts.
- In case of a tie, the user with most corrects in the Big 5 Categories wins. (Best Film, Directing, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and both Screenplay categories)

Well I got this from howstuffworks, but I guess it pretty much sums up who they are:

The Academy

So many Oscar winners gush, "l would like to thank the academy" that it's become a cliche. But what is the Academy, anyway? And why should it be thanked?
The Academy, in this case, is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional honorary society formed in 1927. In spirit, the Academy is something like the Phi Beta Kappa Society or National Honor Society. It's an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in a particular field (filmmaking). Just like similar organizations, it has many members connected to that field (more than 6,000 filmmaking professionals).
You must be invited by the Academy to become a member. Different branches of the Academy (focusing on different aspects of the filmmaking world) have their own standards of eligibility for potential members.
The Academy is involved in a lot of different projects -- from film preservation to developing new film technology -- but it's best known for its yearly awards ceremony. The purpose of the Academy Awards is to promote excellence in filmmaking by honoring extraordinary achievements from the previous year.
Members of the academy, including actors, producers, directors and a variety of other film craftsmen, choose who will receive the awards that year by casting ballots. So when a winner thanks the academy, he or she is really thanking all their professional peers who collectively decided to bestow the honor. They're also thanking the organization as a whole, which decided to hand out awards in the first place.

Me too but I started to doubt her sincerity by seeing her falling twice at the oscars. It might have been calculated. She knows very well that her clumsy attitude is part of her charm

I think you're overthinking it. XD

She's known to have several drinks at those types of awards shows. You've probably never worn a huge gown with way-too-high heels. They're ridiculous and impractical enough while sober, let alone buzzed or tipsy.

I see that the general public attitude towards Jennifer Lawrence has become a little hostile and disapproving as of late. Don't jump the band wagon so quickly.

I like Jennifer Lawrence, if she is sincere regarding the way she acts, she is likeable and personable, if she only pretends to be that way, she is pretty smart, so....

But that should be secondary to her acting in movies anyway, which is, in my opinion, not as noteworthy as Hollywood makes it out to be right now but then again, her competition last year was not that great, except Emmanuelle Riva

To me it seems like an honest "not looking where you're going while waving to fans" incident. Plus who puts cones with matching colour to her dress and the red carpet in the same place?

But like MM says, if she is pretending then...well played. Personally I enjoy her outside of movies, she's a relief from most of the disastrous young 20s actors.

I doubt it will, but I hope Mad Max : Fury Road wins. I think Mat Damon did well in the Martian, but by no means deserves best actor. Was surprised to see that.

I did. Hope it wins at the actual Oscars too. Although it's not likely since the Academy might favor the other nominees. Best Director win for George Miller is quite possible though!

Spotlight, I think since it's the favorite and won in almost all other award giving bodies.

Boyhood won more awards than Birdman last year, but Birdman was the one that won at the Oscars though. This might happen to Spotlight too.

The Revenant is the 2nd favorite to won I think although the possibility of two consecutive best pictures win made by the same director and said director winning two consectutive best director is quite unlikely. That's why I think George Miller winning is quite likely.

The Big Short is a dark horse I think.

Of course The Revenant looked interesting to me, but I was informed that it was pretty gross to watch. I'll save that one for when it's not on the big screen.

I've read reviews complaining about the terms in that movie being really complicated at times. I think The Big Short is quite likely to win in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

I on the other hand wanted to watch that movie at a big screen, that and The Hateful 8 but both is still not showing in cinemas here.

Two years ago it was really close between him and McConaughey but this year there's not much competition, I think he'll win!

In the Best Actress category, I think Larson will win since Blanchett, the 2nd favorite already won two years ago for her leading role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Uste (he just went back to being green) informed me that there will be an Oscar prediction contest soon. Winner will get an oscar trophy medal. I hope you join too!

Mad Max and The Revenant are the only ones I've seen from that list. I'd like for the former to win but the Academy might go this more "meaningful" film.

Though Spotlight just won at SAG.

Right, so I'm trying to complete the "Best Picture" list and so far I've seen The Revenant, Mad Max and Spotlight. From those 3, Spotlight would take the Best Picture for me. Really easy to watch, moving, informative and not unnecessarily long.

I'm going to watch Room tonight and see how it compares to the others.

Checked the current votes on the contest poll, and I must say I'm heartfelt on how much belief our community has on Leo. Only a couple of other votes.

The cinematography category is pretty damn interesting from my point of view. I've seen 4/5 of the films nominated. The one I haven't seen is Carol, but Ed Lachman is a veteran, does great compositions and has really mastered this soft, organic look. Hateful Eights Richardson is another veteran, and packs a punch as the film was shot with on 70mm film and no digital color correction was used at all. John Seales work on Mad Max is a very distinct visual style, which does the compiling of film and CGI-effects pretty much perfectly. And illustrating action and car chases (the whole film is pretty much a car chase) is always a respectable feat. Revenants Lubezki has won the prize on the TWO previous years. And he is the favorite this year too, going for the third consecutive award. Revenant is particulary notable of it's use of very wide lenses, pretty long shots and the fact that not a single lamp was used in the production, it's all natural light. And last but not least, there is Sicario and Roger Deakins. Leo has his reputation with 5 nominations but no awards, but legendary Deakins has has nominated whopping 12 TIMES without winning. The guy is a brilliant visual storyteller, master of light and all-around a super likeable dude. I think his alent lies in the fact, that in the films he has shot, the viewer doesn't even think about the cinematography, he is just drawn in the story.

Pretty sure Lubezki will win again (he is a genious too) but I do kinda wish Deakins would finally get his award.
