You asked for it, you got it

You want to make predictions about Oscar results?

If you are not sure what they are (the Oscar's I mean), then I am not sure how you found this thread...

Just think of a small golden statue of a man holding a stick being given out to some undeserving actors/actresses/directors/general nobodies related to films in some way or other.
Think far too many emotions
Crying (most fake, but there may be a few genuine tears here and there)
Fancy costumes
Think the exact kind of occasion which Kanye West may rush up on stage, uninvited, and make an arse of himself!

Think this

So ask yourself: Who do you think is going to win? What are your favourite nominees?
Who do you think will win (and more importantly, who do you think should win)...

Also, to increase the fun all the way to 11 - there's a fancy competition (with a possibility to win a nice badge also [terms and conditions apply - badges may be revoked/not given out at moderator's discretion])

To be fair, you should really play - even if you hate the Oscars - especially if you hate the Oscars... only because, if you win, you can lord it over all those who actually do care!

So, with that all said, I present:

MH Oscars Contest 2018

It's that time again, time to pretend that you know more about films than you actually do.
Time to unequivocally state why your choices are correct and why anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron
(please don't actually do this - peace and love for everyone ね :love)

...
Anyway
It all finally culminates on Sunday the 4th March, at the 90th Academy Awards.
Awards will be handed out for all kinds of film related categories - Best Film, Best Actor/Actress in a leading role, Best person-who-wasn't-good-enough-to-be-the-leading-actor-so-we-made-a-runners-up-prize-to-make-them-feel-better... There's even an award for hairstyling?!?

We at Mangahelpers are hosting our own Oscar winners poll, with the chance to win your own Oscar. As an award badge [again, if anyone asks, although I wrote this, I don't promise nuthin'!].

Rules:
- Go here and make your picks!
- The user with the most correct guesses wins the award. Remember to leave your username in the poll.
last year, some bright sparks forgot this/wrote random handles (they didn't win, funnily enough - mainly cause I am far too lazy to try and guess/think about who is who - make it simple if you want to win. If not, just write your name as M3J and pick shitty picks)
- Only 1 entry allowed. In case an user does multiple entries, only the last one counts.
- In case of a tie, the user with most corrects in the Big 5 Categories wins. (Best Film, Directing, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and both Screenplay categories)
- If still a tie, then I am sure we will be able to think of some way to separate the quality wheat from the less-savoury chaff
-There is time to vote until 5:00 p.m. PST on March 4, 2018 // 1AM on March 5th GMT
- You are allowed to discuss your picks and personal favourites in the thread. Telling us why you voted how you voted is highly important necessary recommended.

And remember, if you lose:

1. You weren't actually trying - if you were, you'd have crushed everyone else easily!
2. You didn't really care anyway
3. Someone probably cheated, bribing a mod to miscount their votes...
4. Who are these mods anyway - blithering idiots must have made a mistake somewhere or other
5. It's only the Oscars - not some actually important award - like the Golden Cleric or something

- Best Picture: out of the 9 films that are nominated this year, I saw 4 of them: Three Billboards, The Shape of Water, Get Out and Call Me By Your Name. I also think Dunkirk and The Post shouldn't have been nominated in the first place - but were so "because it's Nolan and Spielberg" - especially when you had movies like Blade Runner 2049 and Good Time that truly deserved to be on there.

Anyway, I liked all those 4 films that I watched. Initially I had my vote for The Shape of Water mostly because its been winning the major awards along with Best Director and stuff, but when I really thought about it the film that I actually liked the most was Three Billboards[...]. I managed to catch a screening of Get Out earlier this month, and while it was enjoyable and interesting it was also extremely predictable past a certain point. Call Me By Your Name also surprised me by its performances but it's not really a film that speaks to me. So yeah, Three Billboards pls.

:cookiehand

- Best Director: my pick was between Greta Gerwig, Del Toro and Jordan Peele. As some "trivia" as pointed out, it's been extremely rare for a film to win best Picture but NOT Best Director... so personally I think Del Toro is going to win, and the Academy will just pat themselves on the back for having nominated a female director as well as a black director.

:cookiehand

- Best Actor: I don't think Timothée is going to win, but that would be cool. The Academy loves to nominate young kids but they almost never win. Daniel-Day Lewis? Haven't seen the film because it's not of interest to me. While he is truly a great actor, I feel like if he won for this role it would simply be because it's, apparently, his last film... so my vote goes for Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out.

:cookiehand

- Best Actress: for me it all comes down to Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water) and Frances McDormand (Three Billboards). Even before seeing Shape of Water I was dead set on voting for Sally, thinking that her character being mute and all would make her shine a lot more throughout the film compared to the other actresses. But once again, I changed my vote and decided to stick with Frances since Three Billboards was the film that entertained me and kept me guessing all the way throughout. Of all the films I've seen I think it should win in the big categories.

:cookiehand

- Supporting Actor: another extremely tough one. I saw The Florida Project last week and really enjoyed it, it's a shame it didn't get more recognition. I also liked Willem Dafoe in it and would definitely be happy if he won... however, when it came to importance in the plot + screen time and all that, I gotta vote for Sam Rockwell. I also don't understand why Woody Harrelson was nominated, as well as Richard Jenkins. Richard's character in The Shape of Water was good, but I don't feel like it was "Supporting Actor" good. Actually, I would've given that nomination to Michael Stuhlbarg instead, who could've just as easily have been nominated for Call Me By Your Name as well, not just The Shape of Water.

:cookiehand

- Supporting Actress: I feel the same in regards to Octavia Spencer; she was good, but not "supporting actress" good. I think she's barely in it, and kinda acts more like a comic relief sorta character... Haven't seen Lady Bird, but I'll vote for Laurie Metcalf. From the trailer it seemed like she played quite an important, dramatic part.

:cookiehand

- Adapted Screenplay: vote goes to Call Me By Your Name. Maybe The Disaster Artist should win, but I think the Academy will ignore it largely because of the James Franco scandals. Should it influence their decision? No, but let's face it, that's how things work in Hollywood so I gotta make sure my picks actually have a realistic chance of winning. Also don't crucify me, but I don't think Logan should've been nominated. It's cool and awesome for what it represents for the genre - even though it's been said many times already that Logan isn't your typical superhero movie - but I found it to be completely overrated and overhyped. From the trailers, reactions and reviews that I'd seen prior, I thought I was in for a real treat but it's like nothing ever happens throughout the film. I felt 0 connection because the girl and Logan, and also didn't feel anything at the very end of the film. I get what they were trying to do, but it was a complete and utter miss for me.

:cookiehand

- Best Original Screenplay: vote goes to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Get Out and The Shape of Water were good and all that, but they were extremely predictable to a certain degree. Does that make them bad in any way? No, but Three Billboards actually had some twists and turns and I - emphasis on I - could never correctly guess what was gonna happen next and was systematically surprised throughout the whole film, so I feel like it's the most original and superior screenplay in almost every way.

:cookiehand

- Best Animated Feature + Original Song: haven't seen Coco, but this one is a no-brainer, I'd say.

:cookiehand

- Foreign Language Film: seen Loveless, On Body and Soul and The Square. Loveless, just like Leviathan (which was also nominated I believe) is extremely bleak and portrays a russian family going through some extremely dark times. On Body and Soul was beautful, but I wish it had gone a step further, also wished to have seen a lot more from both main characters, but especially the woman. So with that being said, I will vote for The Square because the Academy will probably feel like it's the most "universal-friendly" film out of the bunch, compared to, say, Loveless which only deals with Russian stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I fee like The Square will win, also because of the themes it tackles and whatnot that happen to be, as I said, more international overall.

:cookiehand

- Best Documentary: Icarus, because of the subject overall. Haven't seen it though, but with the whole interest going on regarding "Russian activities", I feel like it's a good contender.

:cookiehand

- Best Cinematography + Production Design + Sound Editing + Sound Mixing + Visual Effects: Blade Runner 2049 deserves everything it got nominated for, especially when you consider that it was all technical. Sorry but that's just how it is. Will it win everything? Probably not, but it should.

:cookiehand

- Best Costume Design: The Shape of Water. Only one I've seen out of the bunch, but that's not the only reason. Del Toro always nails everything when it comes to his films, and this time was no different I believe.

:cookiehand

- Film Editing: haven't seen it, but I'll vote for Baby Driver because of the whole thing to do with music. I could've just voted for Three Billboards, but I noticed a few editing errors so right then and there I start wondering why it even got a nomination in the first place. The Shape of Water had some interesting shots and transitions, but it probably won't top Baby Driver's.

:cookiehand

- Makeup and Hairstyling: Darkest Hour. Haven't seen it and have absolutely 0 interest in it. Only voting for it because it seems like the one with higher chances of winning.

:cookiehand

- Original Score: Three Billboards. Would've voted for Blade Runner 2049 had it been nominated.

:cookiehand

- Documentary Short Subject: Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405.

:cookiehand

- Short Film Animated: Negative Spaces.

:cookiehand

- Short Film Live Action: DeKalb Elementary.

And that's it :emocat

For foreign language I saw Loveless and A Fantastic Woman... preferred Loveless a little more but see the latter more likely to win an Oscar, so due to Oscar reasons I voted A Fantastic Woman.

Hard with Best Picture. Went with Billboards too, mainly because it won at the golden globes.

Oldman feels pretty safe for best actor.

Eh, I dunno. I mean sure, he's won a bunch of things, but he's also drawn some criticism for saying - in the past - that the award shows are all a bunch of crap and stuff. I mean, it's probably true, but that's definitely not something you want to say when you're a big shot actor who gets nominated often... then again someone like him has not much to lose at this stage in his career.

Personally I never had any interest in Darkest Hour because of its subject matter. Typically "historic" movies don't do it for me, but of course there's plenty of exceptions. And yeah, it's true that the Academy loves their WWII flicks, but this is no "The Pianist" and "Schindler's List" in my opinion. Again, I haven't seen the movie and all, but when I look at him I just see Oldman in a fat suit and am immediately bored out of my mind.

I would MAYBE watch the fan-cut that spliced together Dunkirk and Darkest Hour as a single film, but even then... eh!

Best Picture is so hard because both Billboards and Shape have won some of those “win this and you’ll win the Oscar”-awards.

Three Billboards won SAG Best Ensemble. The Shape of Water wasn’t even nominated (every Best Picture winner since Braveheart - 1996, the first year of SAG - has been nominated for the prize.) +1 Three Billboards

The Shape of Water is nominated for (and will likely win) Best Director. Three Billboards wasn’t nominated (only four films have ever won without a Director nod - the most recent being Argo in 2013, and before that Driving Miss Daisy, 1989.) +1 The Shape of Water

The Shape of Water won the PGA awards’ Best Picture. 63 of the 72 Oscar Best Picture winners have won in this category (though not in the last couple of years). +1 The Shape of Water

Three Billboards won the BAFTA Best Picture. +1 Three Billboards

Etc.

And, of course, both films were truly great. However, because I enjoyed Three Billboards more, I voted for it, if only for the so-called "law of attraction" to work its magic and make it win.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---
Honestly, Oldman is the most obvious Best Actor winner in years. And he deserves it, even if the film was just okay, really.
--- Double Post Merged, ---
My list:

Best Picture

Will win: Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Might win: The Shape of Water

Should win: Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

Best Director

Will win: Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water)

Might win: Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)

Should win: Guillermo del Toro

Best Actress

Will win: Frances McDormand (Three Billboards)

Might win: Saorsie Ronan (Lady Bird)

Should win: Honestly, all four except Streep (didn’t see The Post) are just amazing and either would deserve it.

Best Actor

Will win: Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)

Might win: NO ONE ELSE!

Should win: Gary Oldman or Timothee Chalamet

Best Original Screenplay

Will win: Get Out

Might win: Three Billboards

Should win: Three Billboards

Best Adapted Screenplay

Will win: Call Me By Your Name

Might win: Mudbound

Should win: Call Me By Your Name

Best Supporting Actress

Will win: Allison Janney (I, Tonya)

Might win: Maaaaaaybe Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird), but it’s a long shot.

Should win: Allison Janney

Best Supporting Actor

Will win: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards)

Might win: Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project)

Should win: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards)

Best Cinematography

Will win: Blade Runner 2049

Might very well win: Dunkirk

Should win: Blade Runner 2049 (with The Shape of Water close behind)

This is Roger Deakins’ 14th nomination without a previous win, and Blade Runner 2049 is probably one of the best looking films I have ever seen, or at least in a long time. It deserves this.

Still, I’m afraid Dunkirk will win because - A. more people saw it - B. more people liked it - C. war films are always popular in this category, - D. the last couple of years Best Director and Best Cinematography have gone hand in hand (2049 not even nominated in the other category), and - E. the last film to win Best Cinematography without a Best Picture nod (also not nominated) was Pan’s Labyrinth, 2006.

But if I pick Blade Runner, maybe it’ll win, so I’ll do that. :cookiehand

Best Editing

Will win: Dunkirk

Might win: Baby Driver

Should win: Baby Driver (or I, Tonya)

Best Animated Film

Will win: Coco

Might win: Nuh-uh. It’s Coco.

Should win: Well... Coco

Best Costume Design

Will win: Phantom Thread

Might win: Beauty and the Beast..?

Should Win: I don’t know, really.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Will win: Darkest Hour

Might win: ?

Should win: Darkest Hour, maybe?

Best Production Design

Will win: The Shape of Water

Might Win: Blade Runner 2049

Should win: Either of the above

Best Sound Editing

Will win: Dunkirk

Might win: Baby Driver

Should win: Baby Driver

Best Sound Mixing

Will win: Dunkirk

Might win: Baby Driver

Should win: Baby Driver

Best Visual Effects

Will win: War for the Planet of the Apes

Might win: Blade Runner 2049

Should win: Either of the above (slightly favoring Blade Runner)

Best Score

Will win: The Shape of Water

Might win: Phantom Thread

Should win: The Shape of Water

Best Song

Will win: ”Remember Me” (Coco)

Might Win: ”This is Me” (The Greatest Showman)

Should win: ”Remember Me” (Coco) or ”The Mystery of Love” (Call Me By Your Name)

Sufjan Stevens is one of my favorite indie-artists, and I really loved the song. It worked well in the film as well, but ”Remember Me” is more integral and impactful on the story. Also, it made me cry. So I’ll give it the honors.

Best Foreign Film

Will win: A Fantastic Woman

Might win: The Square

Should win: The Square (tbf it’s the only one I’ve seen but it was great)

Best Documentary Feature

Will win: Faces Places

Might win: Icarus

Should win: Dunno

Darkest hour is good, but it's not 'Schindlers list' lol. Oldman was great, however; and I'd expect bookies to have him short priced favourite (haven't seen Denzel's movie). Historical figures that are well acted are usually safe picks imo.

Time to spam that Google Doc with vague ideas of what some of these films are.

Maybe I should just copy someone else's answers and hope for a tie win.

Copy my answers. I went for the most logical choices that definitely should win, in every way possible.

But.. since it's the Oscars, go for the complete opposite.. :bored

I won’t be able to stay up this year since I work on Monday and it starts at 2AM here. I’ll get up at around 4:15 though so will be able to follow the last parts of it. :nod

I picked everything almost completely random. Because why not. Not like there's much logic to this stuff to begin with.

Nah I’m likely wrong in a lot of cases. Where there were tough calls I went with who I want to win rather than who I think will. Wishful thinking I guess.

Feels like famous last words before getting back-to-back wins. In the end you can still have more correct guesses than others. :heh
