Re: The Tennis Thread

6-2 6-4 7-6 Cilic over Berdych.

---------- Post added at 04:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:46 PM ----------

The Nishikori match was really good; some excellent shot making there and for him to win 2 straight 5 setters is impressive, considering his opponents.
Also Serena through in straights, after going 3-0 down in the first, lol. She needs to pull her head out of her ass; against a better player, 3-0 would not have gone unpunished.
I still think that Stan doesn't always perform against the "lesser" opponents, like he looks past them almost.

Bob, but she might not have started out so poorly against a better player. She's owned Pennetta her entire career.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Berdych really wasted his chances; I had the match on mute but I was following the scores. That 3rd set is something he'd hope to forget quickly.

The ball was on Monfils' racket to win the match, but he pushed it long...

Re: The Tennis Thread

I knew monfils would be a very dangerous opponent. Federer got hella lucky. I fancy him over cilic...if it was Berdych i'd be really scared.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Oh seems like I missed a good match overnight. Monsfils really ought to have buried the match though with having a match point. Now I fancy Federer to make the final. He usually has a good read on Cilic's serve iirc.

Re: The Tennis Thread

After Federer losing after having match points at the USO...it's okay if he's on the positive end for once!!! all jokes aside. I'm happy he's through but a bit sad for Monfils. Commentators have been saying what i was thinking (that he's at his most focused atm)

As long as we're here, my pick is Djokovic in four sets. I'd say three, but I think that that's not giving Kei enough credit.

We have a match on our hands now as Kei takes the first set.

Re: The Tennis Thread

The result didn't surprise me honestly. I felt it could have gone either way. I will say though, things would have gotten rough if he had to serve it out. Breaking for the match was the best possible outcome.

Federer probably going to lose this match, lightning won't strike twice i think. And he's trying to match someone blow for blow who's not missing lol. A final w/o the big four would be great for the sport though.

Cilic routines Fed. Nicely done, big man.

Two first time finalists.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Sad for Federer but not really. Better for the sport this way, it's been like a decade since there was a slam final w/o one of the big 4. Hoping Nishikori takes it so Japan wins its first slam!!

---------- Post added at 06:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:13 PM ----------

Between Stan, and these two..it should show that the big 4(3?) are definitely beatable. I think fed had an excellent slam season given his age. Semi, 4th Round, Final, Semi. Can't help but feel USO/W were his best two chances. Really pulling for Nishikori

Re: The Tennis Thread

Well the men's final will be interesting whoever takes it, it will be a historic event no doubt, nice to see a change of pace in the tennis world, but it probably is a "surprise" and next year things hngs start falling back in place, at least for the usual suspects/favorites.

As for the womens final, I am going to enjoy it a lot, it's a nice rivalry that I can see being made by Serrena and Caroline, although a friendly one, Serrena is like the Federer of the womens part of the tournements these years. The women part along with the great sporting talent will also be blessed with the beauty of the two ladies this Sunday. :)

Re: The Tennis Thread

What a great evening for Tennis, from a neutral perspective. I'm gutted to have missed Nishikori's match as it seemed to be the better match. As well as Cilic played, I think Federer was not anywhere near his best and after losing his first break, I didn't see him winning that game; Marin really stuck to his guns there and to take Fed in 3 sets in a semis is a great achievement for him.

As for the women, I'm so happy both my ladies have made it this far but now I can't decide who I want to win; on one hand I really want Serena to get to 18th and 4th overall on the Women's list but Caroline really deserves a GS and should've won one in the last 4 years at least. :XD

Re: The Tennis Thread

Insane. I bet America wishes it could trade their doubles success for some singles.

@GoldB, yeah :(, fed has issues with big hitters these days. Tsonga at Toronto, Gulbis,Berdych the last few years etc.

Lol I dont think the brothers get enough recognition for their success; not anywhere near singles champions of either sexes.

I particularly remember his encounters with Berdych the last few years.

This match wasn't anything of a challenge for Serena; she was imperious tonight; poor Wozniacki with only 1 winner from open play. That's insane; she just wasn't given the chances or time to play.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Yeah, i expected a rather one sided final. Hoping for a hype as hell men's final though. Those guys just took out the two best players so I hope they don't give a deflated final.

I think that we all expected an easy win for Serena and that's what we got.

I don't really think that we'll get a good Final, unfortunately. Even if it drags out and goes four or five sets, I don't think it'll be well played.

Cilic takes the first set. He's in command.

Re: The Tennis Thread

Nishikori seems to want to play out long rallies but Cilic just isn't giving him the chances to do so; he most certainly is in command. It looks quite likely that this will go in 3 for Cilic.
