There's a discussion on 2ch that Toriko is taking ideas from Hunter X Hunter, that a lot of things are really similar.

And I'll try to translate chapter 19 soon. It goes off into a new arc, and has a lot of words.

Hmm... the second page is the only one I buy, and it looks like a good ole proper tribute, far from stealing ideas :P But there may be more, and more convincing, examples of which I'm not aware. HxH is definitely a manga Toriko has a similar feel to, though, that I admit readily. But when you're dealing with a manga as amazing and influential as HxH, then of course that'll be the case.

I feel like the Japanese can go a bit overboard with these kinds of things. I remember when a few years back there was that controversy over Orange Range stealing music for their song Locolotion or whatever it was called and not crediting it; and while that one was perfectly fair, suddenly sites started popping up with huge lists of other bits of their songs that they stole from other places, and most of those were total bull. The Japanese plagiarism laws are just really strange, from what I've heard, so I tend to be wary about taking too much store in these accusations.

essentially every musclebound shonen is ripping off FotNS, so that's partially true :P

anyway, moving back onto Toriko, this last arc has been pretty good stuff, and shows how this satirical-under-the-skin action series can do decent scale scenes without ever feeling all that serious

Yeah, it was a very solid arc. I'm looking forward to the one starting in this week's chapter - I've glanced at a few pages in Jump but don't want to spoil it entirely so I'm waiting until the translation comes out.

I like Coco. His poison gun doesn't seem to be very flashy though. That makes it not look too powerful.

Interesting news....Shuesha is releasing Toriko volumes 1 AND 2 next month. They really must be pushing this series. I hope it does well.

It doesn't even have 20 chapters yet...
Well I guess the first chapter is long so it'll have less than 10 chapters each. But still it'd be almost all we're up to.
Though that'll be cool, maybe I'll buy them.

They did this with SQs horror series 'shiki' so it's a good sign giving a double release to another series (Shiki sold relatively well with the release too)

I think they were gonna do this with Arts and then when Toriko came out they just said screw it and canceled it. XD
