Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Hey guys. I'm just wondering how you would compare Musashi and Kojiro.

Musashi had his father who was a great swordsman as well right? Same with Kojiro he had Ji Aii :D but Musashi was basically brought up in the mountains since thats all he always hung out whilst Kojiro wasn't really.

Musashi uses anything to win.
kicking fire embers to Seijiro
whilst Kojiro wouldn't I think.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Musashi was the type that was learning on the fly which lends it self to the "do anything to win" philosophy that you mentioned. Kojiro grew up with the sword at his side and just had the kind of instincts required to wield a sword and he was taught how to be a sword fighter. Its almost like Musashi's skill is more wild and kojiro's is more refined.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

That's true, but also, Kojiro lacks the absurd ammount of experience that Musashi has.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

When you say experience are you refering to battles or life experience or both? Its also interesting how NeoShweaty how he says Musashi's skill is almost wildlike and Kojiro's is more refined.. that's probably why Musashi is always giving off an aura about him :)

MHPC- While Kojiro did grow up with the sword and went through a good deal of actual combat, Musashi lived it every day of his life.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Actually I think as far as their experiences go Musashi and Kojiro are equal.

Both of them were really just in their respective villages training until they were about 17. Which is when Takezo(at teh time) joined the battle of sekigahara. At about that same age of 16/17 Kojiro was taken by Itossai where he fought Denshichiro then took him to the aftermath of the battle were they met Musashi for the first time. Kojiro was being hunted by villagers out for revenge while Musashi was being hunted by men of one of the armies. Then after that they both grew wandering around Japan making their respective names more and more famous.

Even their youth was somewhat similar. Neither had a proper sensei. Jisai refused to teach Kojiro directly so he had to rely on spying from afar then practicing on his own. Musashi wasn't taught by his father neither. Instead he grew up practicing on his own to try to beat his father. Which is another similarity. Both Kojiro and Musashi fought their respective father figures. Both of which never directly taught them but greatly influenced them.

I think both of them would do anything to win. Musashi kicked embers at Seijuro. But don't forget that when Kojiro fought the old man from the group of men he resorted to hiding a knife in a wrapped up arm. Also when Kojiro fought Den and his group at first he took a sword from one of the guys.

I think above all they both love battle and to refine their skills to become best.

On another note. Do you guys think Musashi will kill Denshichiro or cut of his hand how it's depicted at the beginning of volume 21?

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

Thats a really good question. I think Musashi will cut off his hand but thats just me and the Yoshika school will still live on. If he did that he'd say stick to teaching the school or something like that.

I can imagine him killing Denchiro though but somehow I got this feeling he won't.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

I think he's going to cut off the hand and leave it at that. If it was earlier in the story (remember the secund inshun fight) I might have said he'd kill him afterwards, but now I think he's above that.

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

The hand cutting off part seems to have Denshichiro about to pass out from massive bloodloss. You have to remember that severing a hand can lead to death from bloodloss fairly quick.

Very good point, but that doesnt seem to be the case in this manga. Many people have had their arms cut off and lived (take denshichiro's underling for example, he did it willingly)

Re: Vagabond Discussion Thread

He'll probaply just pass out and Musashi won't feel that he is compelled to kill him, 'coz he did win the duel... or something like that :)
Maybe a short flashback of Inei saying something like "not even a beast would do that".

Vagabond Edited Manga Discussion

This thread's purpose is to discuss the Vagabond Edited Mangas, to make announcements (i.e. releases, raws, translations) and to generally praise the team.

Strays - The Vagabond Edited Manga team:
  • Project coordinator (the person who gets smacked when things go wrong): Siedhr, your friendly neighborhood cat
  • Editors: Siedhr (that's still me), Devin Lane
  • Translator: Zindryr (from Bakafish, the nice people who bring us such gems as Hard Gay and Original! Reinforced Urayasu Family) - also known as Heavenly Entity in some circles
  • Proofreader: Siedhr (also me, as you can see I'm pretty much everywhere)

You can find all of our releases in the first post of the sticky topic: [KO-Scans]Vagabond releases, raws, earlier volumes. The second post contains Japanese raws, links to zindryr's translations and the first 21 volumes of Vagabond (scanned by Manga-Sketchbook).

Every time there's a new release, that topic will be updated and we will also announce it in this thread. So to keep yourself always informed, all you need to do is subscribe to this thread.

How to subscribe:
- Easiest way is to post in the thread. Something like: "I worship thee" would be enough. If you do that, you should be notified by mail everytime someone posts a reply to it.
- The other method is to use the "Notify" button.
- Third is to visit this subforum weekly. Entirely up to it to choose which one you'd like.

These Edited Mangas are released under the umbrella of KO-Scans, because that's from where most members are from, especially Neo who started all this. Technically, I think it's kind of a joint with Bakafish, but I don't know much about this technical stuff, and in the end, I guess it doesn't really matter anyway.

Other frequently asked questions (or not):

1. What about the previous volumes of Vagabond (01-21)?

The previous volumes of Vagabond are scans of the English edition of the manga, produced by Viz. They were released by Manga-Sketchbook and we had nothing to do with them. You can find these volumes in the Vagabond Releases thread uploaded to sendspace by yours truly.

2. Why do you guys do these Edited Mangas? Manga-Sketchbook is doing them, too.

MS releases the scans for Viz editions. That means they are way behind the Japanese scans. What we want is to give Vagabond fans releases that are up to date, so that they don't have to wait so long. So we scanlate the Japanese raws. It doesn't mean one group is better than the other. This is not a competition between us and MS (like it is with other manga). They do their thing (and we thank them for that) and we do ours (and we don't know how they feel about that).

3. I want faster releases.

We need staff badly: typesetters, cleaners and a QC.

Good. So do we. So praise us heavily and we'll work faster.

But we're only a few people with a lot of things to do (not to mention lives to live). So if you want speed (as well as quality), then come help. Whether you're editing, cleaning, typesetting, translating or proofreading, we'll be sure to find a place for you. Even if you don't know that much, but you have the desire (and a copy of Photoshop) to help, come aboard and we'll teach you all you need to know.

There are a couple of conditions (all equally important and they apply to anyone who wants to be part of the team): first off, you need to be serious about it (that means no dissapearing unnanounced in the woodwork - if you go away for more than 48 hours, you'll need to tell me when we're on a deadline), second, you need to have some free time available, third, we're trying to do a quality job here so you need to be able to accept critique, fourth, we have some editing guidelines you need to observe (I'll PM you about them).

5. The chapters from volume 22 look so good, but the ones from volume 24 are crappy. Why is that?

Because for volume 22 we're using tankoubon scans (raws that are scanned from the volume and have a much better quality), and for 24 we're using scans from Morning (the magazine where Vagabond is published). Once volume 24 is scanned (in October probably), we're going to do another release for 24 using those HQ raws.

6. I have other questions.

Good. Ask them and we'll answer. Either use this thread or PM me and I'll see what I can do.

Vagabond News & Updates

Taken from the official website:

" The next issue (presumably 215) will give me enough material for Vol. 24.
After that I'll be taking a short break until October."
Whut? Noooooooooo. No Vagabond until October. I wonder when he plans to finish this manga if he takes so many breaks.

Now for the good news. Coinciding with the release of volume 24, we'll also be getting two art books, one in color and one in black and white.

Here's a little about the Illustration Collection.

I've talked about it a little before, but we've decided to publish 2 books -- "WATER" which will be in color and "Sumi" which will be monochrome.

We decided on these titles not too long ago.
The reason why I decided on "Water" for the color collection is that even though most of Vagabond's coloring is done with color ink, the ink that is used has to be ixed with water first, which ends up making it over 70% water.
"Sumi" is just as the name implies.
Although to be precies, it is mostly ink, not sumi...

Vagabond Vol. 24 is planned to hit the stores in October, and we're aiming to have "Water" and "Sumi" ready to line up beside it in the stores.

THe meeting this time was about the direction of the collection and how to approach the images that will be its contents.
To be honest, there were some things that I couldn't nail in the meetings up until now, but yesterday I was able to capture everything while I was talking and felt that we had something that I could make work.
No actual work on the book has been done yet.
That will be starting now.

There's a long road ahead, but if I can tackle it with enjoyment and excitement then the end will be near.

Look forward to October.

Re: Inoue (good and bad) Vagabond news

Maybe the gantz mangaka? Well this is very good news for Manga Editors, i.e. us, and bad news for fans. He has been prone to do this before if i remember correctly. I think he took a long break before and started up relatively recently (as in a few months ago)

Re: Inoue (good and bad) Vagabond news

Hirano is the Hellsing mangaka. But seriously, you guys have no room to complain. Hagiwara, (my favorite mangaka), takes YEAR LONG breaks for his stuff. At least Hellsing and Vagabond come out semi-regularly.

In either case, it gives me more time to translate other stuff, <3
